Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflected the city’s culture or history, others came from previous owners and many were selected through “Name the Team” contests.
For teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Lakers name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In1947, team officials changed the name to the Lakers to reflect the Minnesota State’s nickname, “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in1960.
Because the Utah’s team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent the city for its reputation as the “Jazz Capital of the World”. The name stayed with the team even after they found a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
The original owner of the Chicago Bulls, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name. The Bulls, the winner of the six NBA championships, has definitely followed the belief.
In 1967, the Indiana Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to achieve in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.
4. Which can be the best title for this passage
A. The Long History of NBA Teams
B. Interesting Stories about NBA teams
C. Excellent Qualities of NBA Team Officials
D Stories Behind the Names of NBA Teams
5. Why is the Los Angeles’ team named “the Lakers”
A. The name was selected from a “Name the Team” contest.
B. The name shows that Los Angeles is a city with various lakes.
C. It was named after a city treasure, which had a long history.
D. The team got this name in another state, which had a lot of lakes.
6. Which of the following refers to the “Jazz Capital of the World”
A. New Orleans. B. Salt Lake City.
C. Los Angeles. D. Minneapolis.
7. Why did Richard Klein name the Chicago’s team the Bulls

I am a person who has always loved reading. For me, it is easy to get lost in a book and return to the world a couple of hours later having been on an adventure. As a 6-year-old, I could be found reading Harry Potter, a difficult book for a 6-year-old but I enjoyed it all the same. Now, as a student, it is harder to find the time to read books for pleasure; however, I relish the summers where I have the time to read to satisfy myself. Growing up, it soon became clear that spelling for me was not difficult and I had a wide vocabulary. This is because I began reading from such a young age.
My advice for you as English learners would be to read the books that you have often read in your own language in English. Reading, stories especially, is a great way of improving your vocabulary and spelling without noticing as you are lost in the story. For me, I have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in French and am currently reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Spanish. This is a really useful way of being able to read in another language because I know the story so well in English, it is easy to follow the story in the foreign language even if I do not understand every word.
This is another important point: it is not necessary to understand every word. If you understand the meaning of the sentence, each word is not necessarily important. Sometimes it is impossible to translate directly from one language to another. Quite often, if a word is used several times in a text, you can gain your own meaning from it and it makes much more sense than if you tried to translate it in the first place.
Give it a try If you like reading you could be opening up a whole new world of literature.
8. What can we learn from the author’s reading experiences
A. He often spent hours taking an adventure.
B. He didn’t like Harry Potter any more with age.
C. He could spare enough time reading for fun as a student.
D. Reading helped him a lot since his early age.
9. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “relish” in paragraph 1
A. Spend. B. Lose. C. Enjoy. D. Hate.
10. What suggestion does the author give for learning English
A. Reading English stories you’re familiar with in your own language.
B. Reading Harry Potter in different languages.
C. Improving your vocabulary and spelling by design.
D. Understanding the story in your own language.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Better Ways to Read stories. B. The Benefits of Reading.
C. How to Improve Spelling and Vocabulary. D. Is It Necessary to Know Each Word
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B

A new research shows human activity is changing the sound of the Earth's oceans and seas. Scientists say the sound changes of our oceans, seas, and other waterways affect many marine (海洋的) animals - from very small shrimps to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater, Francis Juanes, an ecologist at the University of Victoria in Canada, told the Associated Press. For fish, he explained, sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light. Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive and communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters.
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise is coming from shipping traffic, underwater exploration, and other noisy human activities. For many marine animals, their attempts to communicate are being masked by sounds that humans have produced. Experts explain that masking happens when one or more noises in the water block sound important to a marine animal's living. The overall number of marine animals has gone down by about half since 1970. Some studies show the stress from human noise might also affect the immune system as well as reproductive health or behavior. Imagine having to raise your kids in a place that's noisy all the time," said Joe Roman, a marine ecologist at the University of Vermont.
"When people think of problems facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another thing we need to be monitoring. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean problems," Scientist Juanes says. "If we make something for the ocean, think about how to make it quieter."
12. Why is sound underwater important for ocean animals
A. It changes with light. B. It helps them judge and contact.
C. It travels very fast. D. It guides fishermen to find where they are.
13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A. Underwater exploration must be stopped.
B. Kids exposed to noise can’t be healthy.
C. Human noise brings stress to marine animals.
D. Marine animals have got used to sound changes.
14. What is the author's purpose of writing the text
A. To introduce the principle of sounds.
B. To draw attention to ocean noise.
C. To show the effects of human activities。
D. To share a method of studying oceans.
15. What will the author probably tell us in the following paragraph
A. How to protect marine animals.
B. What is the main cause of sea pollution.
C. How to keep the number of marine animals.
D. What to do to reduce sound pollution in the ocean.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D
【解析】

【13题详解】

【14题详解】

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中“But noise pollution is another thing we need to be monitoring. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean problems,(但是噪音污染是我们需要监控的另一件事。声音污染可能比其他海洋问题更容易处理)”可知,海洋声音污染是我们可以处理的问题,结合最后一句 “If we make something for the ocean, think about how to make it quieter.(如果我们要为海洋做点什么,想想如何让它更安静吧)”可知,下一段应接着写怎样减少海洋声音污染。故选D。

Reading is fun! You can analyze texts to learn more from the texts and about the texts. One way we can do this with books, passages or poems is by exploring the theme of the texts.
The theme of a text is the “big idea” that runs through the text, connecting the characters and events.____16____
Usually the theme of a text isn't told directly, you have to use clues in the text to find it out. Themes can be ideas like family, friendship, love and so on. The theme might not be just one word. It might be an idea such as “Friendship is important.”____17____Make sure you know what the writer is saying.
To start exploring the theme, you should read the whole text. Since the theme develops over time, usually characters change as the story goes on, so the theme you get at the beginning might not be true at the end!____18____
Sum up the text and try to work out a “big idea”. Read again for the writer's purpose of the text by answering the following questions. Was most of the plot around friendship Did the characters solve problems with their families ____19____ If one of the answers is “yes”, you may get the “big idea”.
____20____ You needn't repeat every detail of the story—a few key examples will be fine.
Have you got the way to find out the theme of a text Now you are ready to explore the theme of a text!
A. Find out the clue after reading the whole text.
B. What important events happened during the story
C There may also be more than one theme in a story.
D. It is what the writer wants to tell us through the story.
E. Did the main character learn the importance of friendship
F. Go through the text to find examples that support this idea in the text.
G. You can’t fully understand the real theme until the end of the text.
【答案】16. D 17. C 18. G 19. E 20. F
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。阅读是有趣的,你可以通过分析文章来从中学到更多知识。文章主要介绍了如何探索一篇文章的主题来了解更多知识。
【16题详解】
根据上文“The theme of a text is the “big idea” that runs through the text, connecting the characters and events.(文章的主题是贯穿文本、连接角色和事件的“大想法”)”可知,上文提到了一篇文章的主题、角色和事件,本句为本段最后一句,故总结上文说明这些东西的作用:是作者想通过故事告诉我们的。故D选项“这是作者想通过故事告诉我们的”符合语境,故选D。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Usually the theme of a text isn't told directly, you have to use clues in the text to find it out. Themes can be ideas like family, friendship, love and so on. The theme might not be just one word. It might be an idea such as “Friendship is important.”(通常情况下,一篇文章的主题不是直接告诉你的,你必须在文章中使用线索来找到它。主题可以是家庭、友谊、爱情等等。主题可能不只是一个词。它可能是一个想法,如“友谊是重要的。”)”以及后文“Make sure you know what the writer is saying.(确保你知道作者在说什么)”可知,本段主要是关于文章主题的说明,上文提到了主题的不同类型和形式,C选项中theme对应上文中theme。故C选项“在一个故事中也可能有多个主题”符合语境,故选C。
【18题详解】
根据上文“To start exploring the theme, you should read the whole text. Since the theme develops over time, usually characters change as the story goes on, so the theme you get at the beginning might not be true at the end!(要开始探索主题,你应该阅读整篇文章。因为主题是随着时间发展而发展的,所以角色通常会随着故事的发展而改变,所以你在一开始所获得的主题可能在最后并不正确!)”可知,上文提到在一开始所获得的主题可能在最后并不正确,说明要等到文章结束才能完全理解真正的主题。故G选项“直到文章结束,你才能完全理解真正的主题”符合语境,故选G。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Sum up the text and try to work out a “big idea”. Read again for the writer's purpose of the text by answering the following questions. Was most of the plot around friendship Did the characters solve problems with their families (总结文章,试着想出一个“大主意”。通过回答下面的问题,再读一遍,了解作者对文章的理解。大部分情节都围绕着友谊吗?这些角色解决了家庭问题吗?)”可知,本句与上文并列,都是在对文章角色进行设问,故E选项“主人公认识到友谊的重要性了吗?”符合语境,故选E。
【20题详解】
根据后文“You needn't repeat every detail of the story—a few key examples will be fine.(你不必重复故事的每一个细节——几个关键的例子就可以了)”可知,后文提到找到几个关键的例子,可知本句是在说明找例子的原因,F选项中examples对应后文中examples。故F选项“通读文章,找到支持这个观点的例子”符合语境,故选F。

D. Stories Behind the Names of NBA Teams
5 Why is the Los Angeles’ team named “the Lakers”
A. The name was selected from a “Name the Team” contest.
B. The name shows that Los Angeles is a city with various lakes.
C. It was named after a city treasure, which had a long history.
D. The team got this name in another state which had a lot of lakes.
6. Which of the following refers to the “Jazz Capital of the World”
A. New Orleans. B. Salt Lake City.
C. Los Angeles. D. Minneapolis.
7. Why did Richard Klein name the Chicago’s team the Bulls
A. He had guessed the success of the team.
B. People in Chicago used to like watching bullfighting.
C. He wished the team to have the qualities of fighting bulls.
D. Chicago was then a city famous for fighting bulls.

Give it a try. If you like reading you could be opening up a whole new world of literature.
8. What can we learn from the author’s reading experiences
A. He often spent hours taking an adventure.
B. He didn’t like Harry Potter any more with age.
C. He could spare enough time reading for fun as a student.
D Reading helped him a lot since his early age.
9. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “relish” in paragraph 1
A. Spend. B. Lose. C. Enjoy. D. Hate.
