Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.
When there's a recession in the economy(经济), those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
4. What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2
A. It offers you a chance to study abroad. B. It can allow you to gain more knowledge.
C. It can improve the quality of your daily life. D. It encourages you to travel around the world.

A. change. B. drop. C. growth. D. support.
6. How can one benefit from a good education
A. You can gossip about others’ affairs. B. You are likely to study well at school.
C. You can work well with your coworkers. D. You get to know excellent people with similar interests.

Japanese researchers have created smart kitchen utensils (用具) that use electricity to make food saltier and tastier without adding any extra salt.
Salt makes food taste so much better, but it also can be harmful — eating more than enough salt can cause serious health problems like high blood pressure and heart disease. The average Japanese person eats about 10 grams of salt a day, double the daily sodium (钠) intake recommended by the World Health Organization.
But what if we could make food taste salty without using any salt That’s what scientists at Meiji University have been working on for several years. In 2016, Meiji University teacher Homei Miyashita developed an electric fork that could make any food taste saltier than it actually was. In April 2022, he and his team invented a pair of smart chopsticks that could also make food saltier.
The smart chopsticks worked as intended — they sent sodium ions (钠离子) from the food to the mouth of the user to create an enhanced sensation (增强感觉) of saltiness — but they had a big problem as well. Because of their limited surface, the chopsticks needed to be connected to a power source on the user’s arm. However, the newest utensils — a smart spoon and bowl — have no such limitations. There is enough space for a built-in battery, so you no longer have to connect them to a power supply every time you use them.
The new utensils can make food taste 1.5 times saltier, which is welcome news to the many people who love salty food, but need to watch their salt intake for health reasons. Even better is the news that the newest smart utensils are expected to hit the Japanese market early next year.
8. Why did the Japanese researchers create smart kitchen utensils
A. To help people have a balanced diet. B. To make salt taste less strong.
C. To let people eat more healthily. D. To search for low-sodium food.
9. What is the advantage of the newest utensils compared with smart chopsticks
A. Saving energy. B. Being convenient.
C. Being cheap. D. Making food tasty.
10. Which of the following is ready to be sold as products in Japan
A. The smart fork. B. The smart chopsticks.
C. The smart batteries. D. The smart spoon and bowl.
11. What is the purpose of the text
A. To advise people to eat less salt. B. To show some smart kitchen utensils.
C. To explain how to make food tastier. D. To tell us the Japanese’s eating habits.

Everyone loves astronauts. Whether actual or fictional, astronauts are seen as the best and bravest humankind. So you have to admire the courage of authors Donald Goldsmith and Martin Rees who argue that, in almost all cases, space exploration is too important to leave to imperfect human beings. They write, “Robots can go bravely where humans rightly fear to set foot.”
In The End of Astronauts: Why Robots Are the Future of Exploration, they challenge the three most common rationales(根本原因) for putting humans in space.
First is the belief that “humans in space can do more, and more efficiently, than robots can.” The authors focus much of their book on proving it wrong. The second and third rationales have less to do with efficiency than with “ambition and inspiration”. That is, humans must satisfy their urge(强烈的欲望) to explore the unknown, and “Humans in space add to our understanding of the space and ourselves.”
As scientists, the authors don’t have much patience for arguments based on unclear urges. They are cool to the idea that colonizing(移民于) space has much value to humans. They are more open to the idea that spaceflight might aid in deepening our understanding of the human species.
While we might be excited at the thought of human footprints on a distant planet, astronomers(天文学家) care more about getting data they can work with. So, at its heart, The End of Astronauts is an argument about return on investment(投资):For the cost of a single human journey to Mars, the authors point out, we could launch dozens of unmanned missions.
To support their point, the authors remind us of the remarkable discoveries made by robotic missions to explore the solar system over the past six decades, and they emphasize the risks which future human space explorers will face. In all, their book is a readable and useful contribution to this long-standing debate.
12. Who do Donald and Martin think is the fittest to explore space
A. Astronauts. B. Humans.
C. Astronomers. D. Robots.
13. What do the authors intend to do according to paragraph 3
A. Encourage humans to be ambitious.
B. Deepen humans’s understanding of space.
C. Show how the two authors question the rationales.
D. Prove humans can explore space more efficiently.
14. What do we know about The End of Astronauts
A. It tracks human footprints on distant planets.
B. It mainly focuses on the return on investment.
C. It shows the worry about unmanned missions.
D. It appeals to space explorers to brave challenges.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. The End of Astronauts is well worth reading.
B. Human explorers will face greater risks in the future.
C. All the remarkable space discoveries were made by robots.
D. The End of Astronauts is a contribution to space exploration.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“So you have to admire the courage of authors Donald Goldsmith and Martin Rees who argue that, in almost all cases, space exploration is too important to leave to imperfect human beings. They write, “Robots can go bravely where humans rightly fear to set foot.”(所以你不得不佩服作家唐纳德·戈德史密斯和马丁·里斯的勇气,他们认为,在几乎所有情况下,太空探索太重要了,不能把它留给不完美的人类。他们写道:“机器人可以勇敢地前往人类害怕涉足的地方。)以及这两位作家所写书的书名可知,唐纳德和马丁认为机器人最适合探索太空。故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“First is the belief that “humans in space can do more, and more efficiently, than robots can.” The authors focus much of their book on proving it wrong. The second and third rationales have less to do with efficiency than with “ambition and inspiration”. That is, humans must satisfy their urge(强烈的欲望) to explore the unknown, and “Humans in space add to our understanding of the space and ourselves.””(首先是相信“人类在太空中可以比机器人做得更多,效率更高。”
根据第五段中的“So, at its heart, The End of Astronauts is an argument about return on investment(投资):For the cost of a single human journey to Mars, the authors point out, we could launch dozens of unmanned missions.”(因此,从本质上讲,《宇航员的终结》是一个关于投资回报的争论:作者指出,以一次人类火星之旅的成本,我们可以发射几十次无人驾驶任务。)可知,该书关注的是投资回报。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读最后一段,尤其根据最后一句“In all, their book is a readable and useful contribution to this long-standing debate.”(总而言之,他们的书是可读的,对这一长期争论的有用的贡献)可推知,《宇航员的终结》该书很值得一读。故选A项。

They say once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget. Most of us learned to ride when we were kids, and many still wear our helmets, put our feet on the pedals, and shoot off for a ride on the streets. In recent times, cycling has seen an increase in popularity, so many people raise a question: ___16___
First, let’s look at the health benefits. Cycling can improve your cardiovascular (心血管的) health and burn extra body fat. Strengthening your muscles in your legs helps increase your potential torque (扭矩) and cadence (节奏). ___17___ A long ride in the countryside could help you clear your mind, or de-stress. But it’s not only about your body and mind there are also some plus sides for your wallet’s health.
Cycling can be a great way to go to work or get about town. ___18___ If you drive to work, sometimes finding somewhere to park can be a nightmare, whereas finding somewhere to chain your bike up can be much simpler. Then, on the subway, there are changes at stations and other people who go to work speaking loudly on their phones to deal with. ___19___ And if you’re worried about safety, there are designated cycle lanes in many major cities. In addition, wearing high-visibility clothing is another way to improve your safety when cycling on the roads.
___20___ It can help you reduce your carbon footprints. Not giving off greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is better for the planet and your own environment.
So, whether people want to cycle for their health, their wallet, the environment, or a combination of all of them —the popularity of cycling is on the rise.
A. What makes cycling so convenient
B. But cyclists face neither of these issues.
C And people will choose to go to work by cycling.
D. This can save you a lot of money on fuel or public transportation.
E. Finally, cycling can also be good for the environment.

5. What does the underlined word "recession" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A change. B. drop. C. growth. D. support.
6. How can one benefit from a good education
A. You can gossip about others’ affairs. B. You are likely to study well at school.
C. You can work well with your coworkers. D. You get to know excellent people with similar interests.
7. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The benefits of attending college. B. The exchange with other cultures.
C. The access to good networking. D. The ways of college education.
