Stonehenge--- Can Anyone Explain Why It Is There
Learning Aims
1. 语言知识目标:

Learning Important Points:
1) Master key words and phrases.
2) Practice the reading skill for specific information.
Learning Difficult Points:
It’s actually difficult for students to figure out what mysteries are mentioned in the passage when skimming and they also need time and think carefully to get to know who built the Stonehenge. This is probably because the passage is long and there are many sentences to give much information.
Teaching Methods:
Discussing, explaining,reading and practicing.
Teaching Procedures:
Lead-in: Free talk
Show pictures about some of the top10 world mysteries and lead to Stonehenge. And then give some facts such as “It’s a rock circle and it’s located in Britain.” Then ask students why it has been one of the greatest mysteries.
Pre-reading:
Task1: Read for the structure
Give some choices for students to pick and get the structure of the passage as paragraph1- general introduction /paragraph 2+3+4-specific information of mysteries.
Task2: Match main ideas
Tell students to look through the whole passage quickly and match main ideas which are summarized in question-sentences(What is it What was it used for etc. ).
While-reading:
Task1: Read paragraph1 and answer questions: What is it Where is it How many visitors does it receive every year What do people want to see there in June
Task2: Read the rest of the whole passage and find out how many mysteries are mentioned and what they are. Expected answers are as follow: What was it used for How was it built Who built it
Task3: Read the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs and answer the mystery---What was it used for
Task4: Read the last paragraph and lead students to get the idea that the creation of Stonehenge is still a mystery and know why. And then ask again:why did the volunteers fail to build another Stonehenge(really hard work)
Task5: Have students think: Who built it What are historians’ and Paul’s opinions
After-reading:
Task1: Find out important phrases.
Task2: Underline sentences that have linking words or phrases in the text, and figure out their purposes and get a better understanding of the text through them.
Task3: Show some other mysteries and try to inspire: Be curious and keep a spirit of searching for the truth forever!
Homework:
1, Review what we learnt today.
2, Write about who built Stonehenge in your eyes, using could/might/may to make a guessing and combining the information in the text if you can.
