Think of life as a game in which you are playing with five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit (精神) and you keep all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber(橡胶) ball. If you drop it, it will bounce (弹跳) back.

As a youngster, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me. I was used to tidy living rooms that seemed to whisper, “Not to be touched!”
I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old. Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never approve. The walls were old; some stones were missing, others loose and falling. Still, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally, one spring afternoon, I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I, uh—I want to climb the stone walls,” I said. Everyone looked up. “Can I climb the stone walls ” Immediately voices of disagreement went up from the women in the room. “Heavens, no! You'll hurt yourself!” I wasn't too disappointed; the response was just as I’d expected. But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s loud voice. “Now hold on just a minute,” I heard him say. “Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
“Go,” he said to me, “and come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls—and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said, smiling, “You made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. “There’s only one person in this whole world like you.” the kids can count on hearing me say, “and people can like you exactly as you are.”

When I was a child, I often saw my Grandma throwing bread that was no longer fresh to birds. Not surprisingly, this attracted few birds. Later on, we discovered bird food at the local store. Feeding garden birds in the UK has come a long way since then. Today, the birds can enjoy many kinds of food: from plant seeds to sunflower hearts and from cakes to meat balls. All this comes at a huge cost of about 200m a year. Sometimes, I wonder if we might be feeding our garden birds better than our kids. But maybe it’s worth it. Our generosity is having an important effect on the behavior and even evolution of these birds.
Take the goldfinch for example. In the 1960s, this was a rare bird. Today, goldfinches can be seen in many gardens. Other new visitors include the spotted woodpecker, which has left its usual woodland for food on bird tables. Evolution is meant to progress slowly: over thousands of years. Yet during the past few decades, the beaks of many kinds of birds have become longer because birds with longer beaks can get more food, and then are more likely to live on.
Is bird feeding completely good for birds Not everyone thinks so. Studies by the Zoological Society of London have shown that by bringing together many birds, bird feeders may help the spread of disease. In Australia, some bird experts believe—probably wrongly—that bird feeding creates a “dependence culture”.
But we shouldn’t forget one major benefit of feeding garden birds—it connects millions of people to the natural world. This is especially important for people who seldom reach the wider countryside. As I write this, there comes some noise outside my window: several birds were singing and flying around in my garden. It’s a sight I could only imagine years ago, when feeding garden birds just meant throwing hard bread to them.
32.What does the author mean by saying the underlined part in Paragraph 1
A.Feeding garden birds is a huge waste of money.
B.We spend quite a lot of money on the food of garden birds.
C.We should care more for our kids rather than garden birds.
D.Feeding garden birds can bring more joy than feeding kids.
33.Which is the reason behind the fact that many birds’ beaks become longer
A.These birds have given up traditional woodland.
B.Food for these birds becomes richer and better.
C.Longer beaks mean more chances of survival.
D.These birds grow faster than ever before.
34.What do some bird experts in Australia think of bird feeding
A.It is completely good for birds.
B.It may help the spread of disease.
C.It connects more and more people to the natural world.
D.It may reduce birds’ ability to find food by themselves.
35.How does the author feel when he hears bird noise outside his window
A.Annoyed. B. Pleased. C. Surprised. D. Bored

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两处为多余选项。
Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. It all depends on whether you have a good relationship with your roommate or not. Follow the advice to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships bad.
36
Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. 37
Don't expect to be the best friends.
Some roommates become the best friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure (压力)on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 38 And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.
Ask before you take something.
This applies(适用)to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 39
Clean up after yourself.
This should be done without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are dirty and untidy. 40 But putting your stuff in order will help you avoid conflict.
A. Talk things out.
B. Always be honest.
C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D. So you need to think twice before you help your roommate out.
E. This creates nothing but embarrassing(令人尴尬的) situations and unhappiness.
F. Remember, you're trying making a new friend, not to frighten your roommate.
G. You don't need to have all the time spent cleaning your room and keeping it organized.

Eric threw himself on the sofa, sighing. Mother’s Day was approaching, but he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money ” he thought.
Eric picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest(比赛). “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree(疯狂购物)for her,” said the advertisement.
“This is perfect!” thought Eric. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives me the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Eric liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his bed. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品). “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Eric checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days went by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Eric still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now ” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a shopping spree. And he still didn’t have money.
He had to think of something. Eric closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought hard.

Dear Li Hua,
I’m sorry you are having trouble in making friends. However, the situation is easy to change if you take my advice. Here are some tips to help you.
Firstly, why not take an active part in discussion If you do this, you can express your own opinions, and at the same time, learn other people’s views.Secondly, you should learn about your classmates’ likes and dislikes. Then you can find common interests with them. In this way, you can get to know more different people and show them that you are friendly.Last but not least, it’s a good idea to be ready to help others in need. That way your classmates will like making friends with you and you’ll enjoy your school life together.
I hope you will find these suggestions useful.
Yours,
Ms Wang

Suddenly he had an idea. He fumbled in his drawers and fortunately found a piece of delicate and fragrant paper. He sat down straight on his chair, and began to write a letter in his best handwriting as a Mother’s Day present. “Dear mom, I’m writing this to tell you that you are the best mother in the world…” With a sincere heart, Eric finished the letter and sealed it in an envelope, his lips curving into a smile.
The next morning Eric handed his letter to his mom. Finishing reading the letter, his mom swept him into her arms with her eyes wet as if she wanted to squeeze the breath out of him. “Thank you, my dear!” She sniffed, hugging Eric more tightly. Leaning against his mother’s shoulder, Eric slowly explained why he chose to write a letter as a gift. After hearing the reason, his mom gently touched his head, saying, “To me, your letter is better than a thousand shopping sprees.” Hugging each other, they felt blissful as if they were in possession of everything. Indeed, love should be made known to loved ones.

It’s always a good idea to make time to catch up with family and friends and share family vacations, birthdays, and graduations together. If you are meeting another family with small children, Legoland California is a good choice. Last summer, I celebrated my daughter’s birthday there. You can begin your vacation to Legoland by flying into San Diego International Airport. The park is about a 50-minute drive from the airport. We chose the Legoland Castle Hotel because it is one of the newest hotels connected to the park. You can get into the park at least 30 minutes before it opens to the public. The hotel includes a full hot breakfast with your stay. Visitors can also choose a themed room that best fits the family: Knights & Dragons, Royal Princess or Magic Wizard. We tried the last one. We had lots of happy memories of our stay in there. So I hope you are inspired to start planning a joint vacation with your family or friends to deepen your connections!
