climbed onto my mother's shoulders,my foot slipped off and I slid down.Instinctively,I clutched
Mom's arm with all my might.Feeling the tower below swaying a bit,my heart began a crazy dance in

One morning when I was 15, I got out of bed, stood up, and noticed something wasn't right. I had a sharp pain in my back and down my leg. Within a year, I had three nerve root injections(神经根注射)and an operation on my back. But the pain remained.
After that, everything began to collapse around me. My grades fell quickly and school became even harder than it had been before. However, like my other classmates, I had two arms, two legs and I could walk downstairs. Therefore to others that didn't seem to exist. But sometimes I just couldn't stand it and I had to stay in bed rather than attend school, missing a lot of my education.
What was difficult was that I fell into a rather unclear category. I struggled to use the term “disability” and, quite honestly, I still didn't know if I should. No one had given me the green light. I never took up the designated seats on the bus: the pain of standing was often less than feeling judged for sitting. There was nothing wrong with me. But I worried about people taking a dim view. I knew this happened because on occasion I'd even caught myself looking down on some seemingly able-bodied shoppers filling those sacred seats and thinking, “What are they doing They look fine!”
It wasn't until 2019 that my partner and I went to the cinema to see Pedro Almodóvar's film Pain and Glory. There was an animated series inspired by Almodóvar's personal experiences with back conditions. It was shocking. He captured them all—the nerve pain and the back pain and the visuals were unbelievably accurate. I whispered, “That's what it's like!” Then I couldn't help bursting into tears.
Navigating a world where people can't see your pain is upsetting and lonely. Of course, people can't see the invisible, but try listening, being patient and giving people the benefit of the doubt. They certainly don't make the pain go away. But they can make moving around in this world a little easier to bear.
24. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The physical pain.
B. The author's dec line in grades.
C. The fierce competition at school.
D. The author's being absent from school.
25. What made the author think things got hard for him
A. That he couldn't get a seat on the bus.
B. That he wasn't able to accept his disability.
C. That he was often laughed at by able-bodied people.
D. That he would be measured by the standards of a healthy man.
26. Why was the author in tears after seeing the film
A. It helped him know well about his illness.
B. It reminded him of his similar feelings.
C. He realized his partner's love for him.
D. He was amazed at the actor's outstanding skill.
27. What conclusion can be drawn from the last paragraph
A. Keeping positive makes life easy.
B. People in trouble should help each other.
C. People should learn to adapt to the challenges.
D. Being understood helps ease our painful condition.
C
Robots are slowly entering the field of real-time multitasking, but before they can make it, their computing systems must be updated.
“To truly cross that bridge, the robot needs high computing power, high decision-making speed, low power consumption, high flexibility of resource scheduling, and easy-to-use computing parts, so as to run algorithms(算法) locally in real time,” Shi Luping, a professor at Tsinghua University and MaSongchen, a Tsinghua Ph. D. candidate wrote in an email.
Right now, processing units cannot efficiently meet AI's needs for economical and adaptable processing. But neuromorphic (神经形态的) systems could be a solution. To invent a new neuromorphic computing system that can completely support the networks, Ma and his colleagues first created a framework called Rivulet. “It's challenging to design robot-friendly equipment, and there are few multitasking processors specifically designed for intelligent robots,” wrote Shi and Ma. “We think of how we process information to make decisions reflexively—it's the quality of brain regions. Then we come up with a Rivulet model, which enables multiple network tasks to schedule resources on the chip(芯) efficiently and flexibly.”
Using the Rivulet model, the scientists built an electronic chip labeled TianjicX, as well as additional software. They put both into a mobile robot named Tianjicat and ran it through a cat-and-mouse game. During the game, Tianjicat had to carry out various AI instructions to catch the robot mouse, which moved randomly within a space with barriers using visual recognition and sound detection. Analysis showed TianjicX reduced the amount of energy Tianjicat used by half while processing information and significantly cut down on delays between making decisions and acting on them.
“We provide an exploration platform for Al researchers and promote the study of brain-inspired intelligence,” wrote Shi, “Our platform also has great potential to be applied in edge computing scenes duc to its ability of multitask processing, such as autonomous driving and the Internet of Things.”
28. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2
A. Basics of computing systems.
B. The secret to robots' multitasking.
C. The necessity of upgrading robots.
D. Challenges in the development of AI.
29. Where did the scientists get the idea of Rivulet
A. From their life experiences.
B. From the cat-and-mouse game.
C. From the feature of human brains.
D. From the invention of neuromorphic systems.
30. How does the chip function in the game
A. By giving comprehensive AI instructions.
B. By enabling Tianjicat to avoid barriers accurately.
C. By controlling movements of the robot mouse.
D. By reducing power and time Tianjicat consumes.
31. What do Shi's words imply in the last paragraph
A. The new system has wide application.
B. AI appears in many real-life situations.
C. Multitasking is necessary in many areas.
D. Scholars still need to explore AI further.
D
Forests absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide from Earth's atmosphere, which makes them a key part of
easing climate change. But humans may have already made the world's largest rainforest useless in and perhaps even detrimental to the battle against greenhouse gases, a new study finds.
According to the study, the carbon balance of the Amazon rainforest is damaged largely due to large-scale human disturbance to the Amazon ecosystem, with wildfires —many deliberately set to clear land for agriculture and industry responsible for most of the CO, emissions from the region and the hotter dry seasons.
“The first very bad news is that forest burning produces around three times more co, than the forest absorbs,” lead author of the study Luciana Gatti said. “The second bad news is that the places
where deforestation is 30 percent or more show carbon emissions 10 times higher than the places where less than 20 percent of forest is destroyed.”
In the new study, the researchers analyzed nearly 600 measurements of CO and CO concentration at four spots in the Brazilian Amazon collected from 2010 to 2018. The team found that, on average, fires poured about 1.6 billion tons of CO into the atmosphere each year, while healthy trees absorbed only about half a billion tons. The team also found that, while the Eastern Amazon, which has seen historically greater amounts of deforestation over the past 40 years, has become a place where carbon emissions are from, the Western Amazon, which has seen much less deforestation, is neither a carbon “producer” nor a carbon sink. There, CO absorption by healthy forests balances the emissions from fires.
The Amazon Basin contains about 2.8 million square miles of jungle, representing more than half of the tropical rainforest area remaining on Earth. “Limiting deforestation, and especially wildfires, is key to changing this dangerous trend in the Amazon. Imagine if we could keep the Amazon from fires, the forest could be a carbon sink,”Gatti said. “But we are doing the opposite we are accelerating climate change.”
32 What does the underlined word “detrimental” mean in paragraph 1
A. harmful B. sensitive C. responsible D. ineffective
33. Which is the major cause of the Amazon's carbon imbalance
A. Climate change. B. Industrial development.
C. Human activity. D. Natural wildfires.
34. What did the researchers discover in their study
A. The Eastern Amazon is relatively better-preserved.
B. The Amazon witnessed more fires from 2010 to 2018.
C. The majority of forest fires resulted from deforestation.
D. The Amazon rainforest creates more CO, than it absorbs.
35. What does Gatti imply at the end of the text
A. More forests should have been protected.
B. The Amazon rainforest is shrinking rapidly.
C. People should greatly reduce their carbon footprint.
D. Preventing fire s helps improve the Amazon's condition.

Home gardens produce delicious food. But that's not their main virtue.
Imagine a p late holding two strawberries, identical in appearance. One came out of a supermarket box, probably harvested unripe. 36 The other was picked from a garden minutes before being caten. The first one will probably taste like a slightly sour grape while the second is likely to be sweet and rich in flavour.
Supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages. They are convenient and available in the northern globe even in February. But the two berries differ from each other in the same way that hearing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata in a concert hall differs from listening to it on an old tape. 37
Other people, however, believe gardening a waste of time. But the same could be said of cooking. There are cheap and decent restaurants around, so why bother to make your own meals 38 They mistake the product for the purpose.
Actually, a garden, especially in the early years, can produce little but frustration. New gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. Rabbits have an annoying habit of taking single bites of vegetable, then leaving the rest to go bad. 39 No matter. The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it. The deepest pleasure —as with cooking, writing, bringing up children or almost anything worthwhile is in the work itself. A gardener's memories revolve not around the food produced, but around long afternoons with hands in the dirt.
40
A. No one can ever avoid this hard stage.
B. So why don't we start home gardening for delicious food
C. This might explain why many people desire a home garden.
D. These people misunderstand the ultimate appeal of gardening.
E. By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the plant for days.
F. To garden is to patiently and lovingly help life grow, in the ground and above it.
G. And even expert gardeners can lose a season's harvest to uncooperative weather.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Jordi! Wake up!” Father's voice called from the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a casteller—a tower builder. Mama had breakfast ready. “Are you prepared for your moment of fame ” Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry, and the bread got stuck as I swallowed. Taking a big swig of juice, I put on a smile. “I'm ready.” I would do well. I wanted to make him proud.
Here in the east ern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that, I'd watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell. I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year, I had been practicing the climb. I was twelve, and I must not be a coward(胆小鬼). So for the first time in a competition, I would help build the tower!
In town, I saw that the center was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country. Hands sweating, I was waiting for our turn to compete. Mom came and patted me on the shoulder. “Have focus. Have faith.” I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.
Soon, too soon, it was our turn.
My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to each other's arms. Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.
Our base was solid. Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other's arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier(层).Another group of men would form the third tier. Then, a group of women, including Mom, started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then suddenly it was kids' turn to make the last tier.
“Jordi. Easy!” My mother whispered the words.
