A
Johannes Gutenberg
Johannes Gutenberg, born around the year 1400 in Germany, is widely regarded as the inventor of the modern printing press. Before about 1450, most books were written or copied by hand. This made them extremely time-consuming to produce and expensive to buy. But in 1455 Gutenberg developed a machine which could print multiple copies of the same book. Gutenberg did not achieve financial success as a result of his breakthrough, but his invention helped to spread knowledge across Europe and was a major factor in the Renaissance.
Louis Braille
Born in France in 1809, Louis Braille became blind at the age of three after an accident in his father’s workshop. When he was ten, he earned a place at a special school for blind children in Paris. In 1821, Charles Barbiera, a former soldier, visited the school and talked about a code that he’d invented which allowed soldiers to share information on the battlefield without speaking. Impressed by this idea, Louis worked on his own code to help the blind read. The code that Louis invented has become standard throughout the world.
Samuel Morse
Samuel Morse, born in 1791 in Massachusetts, USA, started his career not as an inventor but as an artist. He had great artistic talent and soon became well-known for his portraits, but he also had a passion for new technology. In 1832, while travelling home by sea from Europe, he overheard a conversation about electromagnetism, and this gave him the idea for a new form of communication-the electric telegraph. Although other inventors had developed similar machine, Morse’s worked better and he applied for and got the patent in 1837.
Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell, a pioneer in the field of telecommunications, was born in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Perhaps because of his mother’s hearing problems, Bell had a particular interest in the education of deaf people. This led him to invent the microphone. Bell was not the only inventor working in this field, but his lawyer managed to secure the all-important patent which gave Bell ownership of the idea.

C. All of them are pioneers in their own areas.
D. All of them made a big fortune in life.
2. ________ had another career before starting to invent.
A. Johannes Gutenberg B. Samuel Morse
C. Louis Braille D. Alexander Graham Bell
3. Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage
A. Louis Braille was inspired by a military invention.
B. Johannes Gutenberg had a difficult time during his education.
C. Samuel Morse helped to educate people in many countries.
D. Alexander Graham Bell suffered a terrible injury at a young age.

根据第一个发明家“Gutenberg did not achieve financial success as a result of his breakthrough, but his invention helped to spread knowledge across Europe and was a major factor in the Renaissance.(古腾堡的突破并没有带来经济上的成功,但他的发明有助于在欧洲传播知识,是文艺复兴的一个主要因素)”、第二个发明家“The code that Louis invented has become standard throughout the world(路易斯发明的代码已经成为全世界的标准)”、第三个发明家“Although other inventors had developed similar machine, Morse’s worked better and he applied for and got the patent in 1837 (虽然其他发明家也开发了类似的机器,但莫尔斯的工作得更好,他在1837年申请并获得了专利)”以及最后一个发明家“Bell was not the only inventor working in this field, but his lawyer managed to secure the all-important patent which gave Bell ownership of the idea (贝尔不是这个领域唯一的发明家,但他的律师设法获得了至关重要的专利,让贝尔拥有了这个想法)”可知,四位发明家在各自的领域都是先驱者。
根据Samuel Morse部分中“Samuel Morse, born in 1791 in Massachusetts, USA, started his career not as an inventor but as an artist(塞缪尔·莫尔斯,1791年出生于美国马萨诸塞州,他的职业生涯不是作为一个发明家,而是作为一个艺术家)”可知,Samuel Morse之前是一位艺术家,即Samuel Morse在开始发明前有另一个事业。
根据Louis Braille部分中“In 1821, Charles Barbiera, a former soldier, visited the school and talked about a code that he’d invented which allowed soldiers to share information on the battlefield without speaking. Impressed by this idea, Louis worked on his own code to help the blind read.( 1821年,退伍军人Charles Barbiera参观了这所学校,并谈到了他发明的一种密码,这种密码可以让士兵在战场上不用说话就能分享信息。这个想法给路易斯留下了深刻的印象,他编写了自己的代码来帮助盲人阅读)”可知,Braiile的发明灵感来自于一项军事发明。故选A。
B
In 1984, I was a painfully insecure teenage girl from a dysfunctional family, depressed, underweight, and rejected by my classmates. My only comfort was to be the stage manager at our school.
One day, actors from the famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival came to perform for the school. One of them was Barry Kraft, and he was unlike anyone I’d ever met. As I ran around backstage helping him, he treated me with friendliness and respect that he would show for friends in his living room.
He showed up at our drama class and asked everyone to narrate a monologue (独白). To my shock, he took me aside after class and said, “Your monologue was the best. That was really very good.”
I made it through graduation and got accepted to college. That summer, I traveled with a friend to see Mr. Kraft perform. During one performance, I gathered up my courage and dropped him a note during the break, saying I was visiting and if he looked he could see us. Almost immediately I regretted sending the note. I thought it was the most presumptuous (留失的) thing I had ever done.
At the end of the show, he was waiting for me! He smiled broadly and gave me a hug. Then he said, “Would you like to visit backstage ” And off we went. Every time we met someone, he introduced me and said, “She’s a very good performer who was a huge help to me at her school visit.”
It is difficult to describe how important this man’s attention was to me. A successful actor doesn’t have to give a depressed teenager the time of day, but he did far more. My confidence had just increased 800 percent. I am now a happily married professional, and whenever I notice a teenager in need, I remember Barry Kraft. He saw a teenager in need of attention and support, and he took the time to help. So now I take the time, too.
4. What do we know about the author
A. She was loved by her parents. B. She felt left out by her classmates.

5. Which of the following can best describe Barry Kraft
A. Friendly and considerate. B. Intelligent and patient.
C. Committed and generous. D. Confident and energetic.
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The author will continue with her education.
B. Barry Kraft will team up with the author.
C. Barry Kraft inspired the author to study drama.
D. The author will make efforts to assist teenagers.
7. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To introduce a famous actor.
B. To encourage people to overcome difficulties.
C. To share the author’s experience and its impact on her.
D. To explain the reason why the author loves stage management.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C

根据第一段“In 1984, I was a painfully insecure teenage girl from a dysfunctional family, depressed, underweight, and rejected by my classmates. (1984年,我还是一个痛苦的没有安全感的少女,来自一个不正常的家庭,情绪低落,体重过轻,被同学们排斥。)” 可知,作者感到被同学排斥,因此她感到被孤立。故选B。

That was really very good.” 故选A。
根据最后一段“My confidence had just increased 800 percent. I am now a happily married professional, and whenever I notice a teenager in need, I remember Barry Kraft. He saw a teenager in need of attention and support, and he took the time to help. So now I take the time, too. (我的信心增加了800%。我现在是一名幸福的已婚专业人士,每当我注意到有需要的青少年时,我就会想起Barry Kraft。他看到了一个需要关注和支持的青少年,他花时间去帮助他。所以现在我也会花时间。)”可知Barry Kraft对作者的关注和支持影响了她,所以推断作者也会致力于帮助青少年。故选D。
【7题详解】

C
The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.
The origin (起源) of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers — the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain — the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t have much difference from the European culture.
At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic (象形) language while the western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race differences count as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the west, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.
The differences are everywhere. They are obvious and make people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world different. But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colorful. The cultural difference should not be the obstacle (障碍) to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the driving force of our going farther.
8. What is the text mainly about
A. The origin of cultures. B. Culture differences.
C. Language systems. D. Colorful world.
9. Why is the American culture similar to the European culture
A. Both of the two cultures have a very long history.
B. They have the same mother rivers as the Chinese culture.
C. The early settlers from Britain brought their culture to America.
D. Both the British and the American live along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
10. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “interference” in paragraph4
A. difference B. influence
C. confidence D. environment
11. Where is the passage most likely from
A. A diary. B. A magazine.
C. A novel. D. A guidebook.
B 9. C 10. B 11. B
由第一段中的“The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.”
由第三段“When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t have much difference from the European culture.”
由第四段“due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the west, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries.”
由第一段中的“The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.”
D
Researchers have developed a new method for training people to be creative, one that shows promise of succeeding far better than current ways of inspiring creativity.
This new method, based on narrative (叙述的) theory, helps people be creative in the way children and artists are by making up stories that imagine alternative worlds, change perspective and generate unexpected actions.
“The narrative method works by recognizing that we’re all creative,” said Angus Fletcher, who developed the method and is a professor of English and a member of the Ohio State University’s Project Narrative. “We as a society completely undervalue the creativity of kids and many others because we are addicted to the idea that some people are more creative than others.”
The narrative method of training for creativity uses many of the techniques that writers use to create stories. One is to develop new worlds in your mind. For example, employees at a company might be asked to imagine a world in which all their customers are like that. Another technique is perspective-changing. An employer might be asked to answer a problem by thinking like another member of their team.
“Creativity isn’t about guessing the future correctly. It’s about making yourself open to imagining completely different possibilities,” Fletcher said. “When you do that, you can respond more quickly and flexibly to the changes that do occur.”
Fletcher and his team are also continuing to work with new organizations, such as the Worthington Local School District in Ohio.
“It’s better to hire a diverse group of people and then train them to be creative. That creates a culture which recognizes that there are already creative people in your organization you aren’t taking advantage of,” he said. “This new method of training creativity could only have come from Ohio State University’s Project Narrative, which is itself proof of the power of creativity.”
12. What may make the narrative method workable according to Fletcher
A. Creating alternative stories. B. Changing new perspective.
C. Generating unexpected tasks. D. Being aware of our creativity.
13. How does the author develop paragraph 4
A. By using examples. B. By making comparison.
C. By answering questions. D. By quoting techniques.
14. What result is expected of training creativity
A. To develop a culture gradually. B. To react to changes quickly.
C. To create possibilities freely. D. To predict the future correctly.
15. What is the most suitable title for the text
A. Ways Can Be Adopted to Inspire Creativity
B. The Power of Creativity Has Been Found
C Anyone Can Be Trained to Be Creative
D. A Way Is Found to Recognize Creative People
D 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据第三段““The narrative method works by recognizing that we’re all creative, ” said Angus Fletcher, …”(Angus Fletcher说:“这种叙述方法有效通过认识到我们都是有创造力的起作用。”)
根据第四段“The narrative method of training for creativity uses many of the techniques that writers use to create stories. One is to develop new worlds in your mind. For example, employees at a company might be asked to imagine a world in which all their customers are like that. Another technique is perspective-changing. An employer might be asked to answer a problem by thinking like another member of their team.”(训练创造力的叙事方法使用作家用来创作故事的许多技巧。 故选A。
根据第五段““Creativity isn’t about guessing the future correctly. It’s about making yourself open to imagining completely different possibilities,” Fletcher said. “When you do that, you can respond more quickly and flexibly to the changes that do occur.””(Fletcher说:“创造力不是正确地猜测未来。是让你自己对想象完全不同的可能性敞开心扉。当你这那做时,你可以对于发生的改变更快速和灵活地回应。”)可知,让自己敞开心扉去想象完全不同的可能性,可以对实际发生的改变做出更快速和灵活的反应。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Researchers have developed a new method for training people to be creative, one that shows promise of succeeding far better than current ways of inspiring creativity.”(研究人员已经开发出一种新的方法来培养人们的创造力,这个新方法表明其成功的保证远远好于现有的激发创造力的方法。)

上文“In fact, the key to easy morning wake-up lies in resting your body clock(事实上,早晨轻松起床的关键在于让你的生物钟休息。)” 符合,引起下文,下文“Here is how to make one.(以下是制作一个睡眠计划的方法。)”
下文“In order to make a change, you need to decide why it’s important. Do you want to get up in time to have breakfast with your family, get in some exercise or just be better prepared for your day Once you are clear about your reason, tell your family or roommates about the change you want to make.(为了做出改变,你需要决定为什么它是重要的。你想准时起床和家人一起吃早餐,做些运动或者只是为你的一天做更好的准备吗?一旦你清楚了你的理由,告诉你的家人或室友你想要做的改变。)”可知,本段主要讲要找到自己的动机,B项“Find the right motivation.(找到正确的动机。)”符合,能概括本段内容,故选B。
【18题详解】
下文“That’s a quarter-hour more you could be sleeping if you bought a coffee maker with a timer.(如果你买一个带定时器的咖啡机,你可以多睡一刻钟。)” 符合,其中“the 15 minutes”呼应下文的“a quarter-hour”,故选G。
根据本段中心句“Keep your sleep/wake schedule on weekends.(周末保持你的睡眠/起床时间表)”可知,本段主要建议人们在周末也要坚持自己的作息时间,上文“But compensating (弥补) on the weekends actually feeds into your sleepiness the following week, a recent study found(但最近的一项研究发现,周末的补偿实际上会让你在接下来的一周更加困倦。)”
上文“After you’ve tried a new method for a week, take a look at your record.(在你尝试了一个星期的新方法之后,看看你的记录。)”指出我们在尝试新方法后,要自己做好记录同时进行评估,下文“If not, take another look at other methods you could try.(如果没有,再看看其他你可以尝试的方法。)”

Dear Worried,
I’m sorry to know that you’re having such a bad time at the moment. The truth is everyone will have one of those periods when things seem to be going wrong, so you don’t have to worry so much. The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you’ll regret. Here are three useful tips.
First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself. Second, go outdoors and play team games with your friends as physical exercise is an effective way to get rid of anger. Third, remain optimistic about your future. Such a positive attitude towards life can be helpful in lifting your spirits.
I hope you’ll soon feel calmer and carry on as normal.
Yours,

As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon.Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more tired he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her.Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third.Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain — the Mesopotamian Civilization.

11. Where is the passage most likely from
A. A diary. B. A magazine.

13 How does the author develop paragraph 4
A. By using examples. B. By making comparison.
C. By answering questions. D. By quoting techniques.
14. What result is expected of training creativity
A. To develop a culture gradually. B. To react to changes quickly.
C. To create possibilities freely. D. To predict the future correctly.
15. What is the most suitable title for the text
A. Ways Can Be Adopted to Inspire Creativity
B. The Power of Creativity Has Been Found
C. Anyone Can Be Trained to Be Creative
D. A Way Is Found to Recognize Creative People
