As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Before you visit a country, you should learn about its social rules. Here are some interesting rules in different countries.
In Thailand, you can see that the Thai people are always smiling. They are very kind. However, a simple thing can quickly make a Thai person unhappy. In this country, you can't touch anyone's head, because Thai people believe that the soul is in the head.
If you are going to visit Chile, remember one simple rule:Don't eat anything with your hands. In this country, table manners are very important. You should use knives and forks, even when you eat hamburgers and French fries.
In Poland, guests usually choose flowers as presents for hostesses. Remember the number must be odd, like one, eleven. And the hostesses don't hope that you take away the cover of the flowers. You must be more careful when you give red roses to a woman because the red rose means love. In addition, Britain and Russia have the same custom of choosing flowers as gifts.
In most parts of the world, people prefer others to be on time. However, Mexicans think it's impolite to do so. In Mexico, people are always late for a friend's party. Good gift-giving is welcome all over the world but it is not the same in different countries. Here are some examples.
China has a long history of gift-giving culture. If you want to send others gifts there, you had better do it yourself and give your wishes face to face. In China, even if a gift is precious, the giver always has to tell the receiver that this expensive gift is just “a little gift”. And if you receive gifts from a Chinese friend, it is not polite to open it in front of the giver.
Unlike in China, when you receive a gift in Japan, you must open it in front of the giver. Whether you like it or not, you must praise the gift to show you like it very much. In this way, both the receiver and the giver will be happy. No other countries could take gift-giving seriously like Japan. Gift-givers often pack gifts in white paper. They use white paper to keep dirty things out so that the gift is clean.
Italians usually do not bring gifts when they visit others. They send gifts the next day or even later. It is to show respect (尊敬) and can help the givers choose right gifts. Usually candies and wine (酒) are popular gifts. Chocolate is also a good choice. In Italy, a handkerchief (手帕) is not welcome as a gift. A handkerchief is the symbol of saying goodbye.
