Nelson Mandela was a figure of international fame, and many details of his life and career were public knowledge. But here are some things you may not have known about him.
In his youth, Mandela enjoyed boxing. Even during the 27 years he spent in prison, he would exercise every morning. “I did not enjoy the violence of boxing so much as the science of it. Boxing is equal. I never did any real fighting after I entered politics. My main interest was in training.” he wrote in his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.
Among the memorabilia in the Mandela Family Museum in Soweto, visitors can find the world championship belt given to Mandela by American boxer Sugar Ray Leonard.
Rolihlahla Mandela was nine years old when a teacher at the primary Methodist school where he was studying, gave him an English name—Nelson—in accordance with the custom to give all school children Christian names.
Rolihlahla is not a common name in South Africa. It means “troublemaker”.His circumcision name was Dalibunga, meaning “founder of the Bunga”.
However, in South Africa, Mr. Mandela was often called by his clan(宗族)name—Madiba—which South Africans used out of respect.
After going underground because of his ANC activities, Mr. Mandela’s ability to evade(躲避)the securities services earned him the nickname “the black Pimpernel”, after the novel The Scarlet Pimpernel, about a hero with a secret identity.
A fake(伪造的)passport in the name of David Motsamayi was used by Mr. Mandela. He had disguised(伪装) himself as a driver, a gardener and a chef in order to travel around the country unnoticed by the authorities.
Mr Mandela studied law on and off for 50 years from 1939, failing about half the courses he took.In August 1952,he and Oliver Tambo established South Africa’s first black law firm, Mandela and Tambo, in Johannesburg. He persevered to finally secure a law degree while in prison in 1989.

Apple published new iPads at the headquarters on Thursday. Fortune had 30 minutes to try them both out. While Apple clearly adjusted last year’s models--- one much more than the other--- instead of entirely remaking them, the latest iPads seemingly uphold company’s reputation for making quality products.
iPad Air 2:
The new 9.7-inch tablet looks a lot like last year’s model, but manages to be 18% slimmer--- a design that makes the iPad Air 2 thinner than a pencil. It’s the thinnest tablet on the market. A new screen cuts glare and reflections by half, according to the Apple. And now there’s Touch ID, the same fingerprint scanning technology found in last year’s iPhone 5s that users unlock their devices by placing a finger on the home button.
The iPad Air’s other improvements includes a faster processor and graphics chip, a Burst mode feature that quickly get a series of photos and more storage on iPad models priced $599 and above .It will be available starting Oct.24
iPad mini3
If the larger iPad received something of a face improvement this year, its smaller sister got a half-hour facial. Available Oct.24, the iPad mini 3 is more portable thanks to its 7.9-inch size, but there’s very little new here besides the addition of Touch ID. And yes, the iPad Mini 3 offers more storage on model priced $499 and over, but again, the iPad Air 2 does that, too.
In fact , the iPad mini 3 is virtually similar to last year’s model down to the size, processor and camera, so much so that handling the device gave me déjà vu(似曾相识). Compared to the Air 2, it’s noticeably thicker, runs slower and lacks the Air 2’s glare-resistant screen. It’s still a solid. Affordable tablet--- it just doesn’t offer much that’s new.
61 Which isn’t the description of the iPad Air 2
A. The iPad Air 2 is the thinnest tablet on the market
B. The iPad Air 2’s new screen cuts glare and reflections by half
C. The iPad Air 2’s tablet looks different like last year’s model
D. The iPad Air uses the same fingerprint scanning technology as iphone5s
62. Tom should pay ____ for one iPad Air 2 and two iPad mini3 for his family as the Christmas gifts

C. more than $1697 D. less than $1597

D. The iPad mini 3 runs more quicker than the iPad Air 2
64. What can we know about the iPad mini 3
A. The iPad mini 3 priced $ 599
B. The iPad mini 3 has the iPad Air 2’s glare-resistant screen
C. The iPad mini 3 is totally different to last’s model down to some aspects
D. The iPad mini 3 is still a solid, affordable tablet

Sometimes pollutants and diseases can rob people of their sense of smell, says Richard Doty. He leads a team who has studied the problem since the 1980s.
Back then, people knew little about what and how well people could smell. Doctors simply lacked a tool to measure people’s scent detection. So Doty developed a smell test, based on 40 different cards. Each card carries a different odor( 气味). A person’s score equals the total number of correctly identified scents. The cards allow doctors to measure how many scents people can detect and thus determine whether they lose the sense of smell. Today, this test is used by laboratories around the world.
In the project, Doty’s team used the cards to test smokers. The test showed that the more cigarettes people smoked, the poorer their ability to identify chocolate, rubber, apple and other scents. In another, Doty tested 99 people who breathed in smoke and dust. He found their sense of smell was generally not as sensitive as that of other people. The study showed certain pollutants can harm our sense of smell.
Actually, the major interest for Doty is the link between the sense of smell and Parkinson’s disease, which strikes millions of mostly older people worldwide. It causes shaking in patients and makes it difficult for them to walk, talk, eat and smell. So a smell test could help diagnose the disease much sooner than usual. That could give patients access to early treatment.
Doty’s research team is also working with patients who have begun taking medication for Parkinson’s disease. They give smell tests to the patients and scan their brains, using an imaging device called SPECT.
“So far, the smell tests are proving to be more sensitive than the brain scans, ”Doty says. The findings suggest it may be possible for doctors to use inexpensive smell tests to diagnose Parkinson’s disease even before the disease shows up in far more expensive brain scans. While the research is under preparation, Doty says, it has a bright future.
66. The 40 different cards’ test was developed by Doty in order to___________.
A. guide the doctors to help the older people better.
B. measure people’s ability to identify scents.
C. help people know how they could smell better.
D. check if older people will lose their sense of smell.
67. Two examples are mentioned in the third paragraph to show that____________.
A. the card test has shifted Doty’s attention
B. the card test has benefited the doctors a lot
C. the card test brought Doty’s team unexpected findings
D. the card test is widely used all over the worlds.
68. According to the passage, what interests Doty most is _____________.
A. how the sense of smell limits people’s behaviors
B. how smokers are losing their sense of smell
C. how Parkinson’s disease makes it difficult to walk
D. how the sense of smell is linked to Parkinson’s disease
69. How does the test help older people who suffer from Parkinson’s disease
A. By giving them access to early treatment
B. By offering them cheaper medicine
C. By diagnosing their disease much more carefully
D. By offering them a second chance to scan their brains
70. We can infer from the passage that the research is____________
A. negative B. hopeful C. uncertain D. imaginative
PART FOUR WRITING
Section A (10 marks)
Dictions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
Volunteer vacations are short-term service opportunities abroad or in another culture or destination at home. The main purpose of a volunteer vacation is to put yourself at the service of the local community, and to contribute to community development projects. Meanwhile, a volunteer vacation combines volunteer work and travel, and you’ll want to have a good time as well as explore places which are unfamiliar to you.
On a volunteer vacation, you serve others on a wide variety of meaningful work projects, and at the same time have various unforgettable experiences. As you are working, you will experience from inside the community the local culture that you would never receive on a typical vacation. You will meet new people and develop friendships that may last a lifetime. You will do something new, different and worthwhile. When you return home, one thing is certain: you will know that you have changed yourself in some way as a result of the volunteer work you have completed.
Here are tips to ensure your volunteer vacation abroad will be successful and enjoyable.
Researching the location is quite necessary. Take the local climate into consideration before making your decision. If you hate rain, for instance, you probably don’t want to work in a place where it rains every day. Do you prefer to work in an urban setting or physically-challenging environment
Then you’d better do some research into the social environment. Try to gain an understanding of the political climate of where you’re heading to avoid any possible trouble. You’ll also want to learn as much about the local culture and language as possible. Learning even simple phrases like “thank you” and “hello” is a step in the right direction. Become knowledgeable about local customs so you don’t show disrespect to your hosts.
SECTION B (2+2+3+3=10)
Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
Generosity and kindness does not mean that you give only when you have a lot or after fulfilling all your needs, but in fact you can still give when you yourself are struggling. Generosity literally means willingness and liberty in giving away one’s own money, time, talent, etc. sincerely without any personal gain as shown in the following story.
Mahatma Gandhi went from city to city, village to village collecting funds for the Charkha Sangh. During one of his tours he addressed a meeting in Orissa. After his speech a poor old lady got up. She was gone with age, her hair was grey and her clothes were in rags. The volunteers tried to stop her, but she fought her way to the place where Mahatma Gandhi was sitting.
“I must see him,” she insisted. She went up to Mahatma Gandhi and touched his feet. Then from the folds of her sari(卷布), she brought out a copper coin and placed it at his feet. Mahatma Gandhi picked up the copper coin and put it away carefully. The Charkha Sangh funds were under the charge of Jamnalal Bajaj. He asked Mahatma Gandhi for the coin but Mahatma Gandhi refused.
“I keep cheques worth thousands of rupees (卢比) for the Charkha Sangh,” Jamnalal Bajaj said laughingly, “yet you won’t trust me with a copper coin.” “This copper coin is worth much more than those thousands,” Mahatma Gandhi said. “If a man has one hundred thousand rupees and he gives away a thousand or two, it doesn’t mean much.” “But this coin was perhaps all that the poor lady possessed. She gave me all she had. That was very generous of her. What a great sacrifice she made. That is why I value this copper coin more than ten millions of rupees.”
