“The value of people cannot be defined,” this is the philosophy by which Majda Gibran, better known in Egypt as “Mama Maggie”, lives. She devoted over three decades of her life to serving the less fortunate. Her work enabled over 33,000 children in Cairo to achieve their potential and successfully leave Cairo’s slums (贫民窟).
Her story begins with what was meant to be a quick visit to the slums in Cairo. She knew right away she would devote the rest of her life to helping those in need, especially children. The scenes of poverty in the slums forever changed her life. Mama Maggie soon abandoned the comforts of her previous life and quit her job as an American University professor to lend a helping hand to those who needed her most.
She began sharing meals, gifts and basic necessities to less fortunate families in the slums. Her warmth and sincerity gave residents a sense of hope and dignity. In 1985, Mama Maggie founded the Stephen’s Children Foundation, with the mission to enable children and young people to lead their own development and lift them out of poverty (贫困). The foundation provides education and training to thousands of children living in poverty. Over the last few years, the foundation has extended its social and educational initiatives to thousands of families and children in other poor neighborhoods.
To date, Mama Maggie has established 92 educational centres nationwide to teach over 18,000 children and carried out healthcare campaigns that provides treatment to over 40,000 patients annually. She conducts visits to more than 13,000 children to provide training services. Her foundation’s three training centres for mothers and children empower families to earn their own income. Her foundation has benefited over 33,000 children, with the help of about 2,000 volunteers, and it is still growing today.
Mama Maggie, a Nobel Prize nominee (被提名人), never sought fame or reward for her work. She desires to be remembered as a hope maker who made a difference in the lives of every person that crossed her path.

By the time most of the world discovered the kipunji monkey, it was already seriously endangered. These rare animals live in Tanzania and is not closely related to any other known monkeys. Thanks to smart protection efforts, their population is accumulating.
Kipunji monkeys live in groups and spend most of their time in trees. Local hunters knew about them, but researchers first identified the species in the early 2000s. A 2007 survey found 1,117 of the animals alive. Experts from organizations such as the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) stepped in to try to save the species.
One method of protecting kipunji monkeys was to reduce conflict between the monkeys and humans. Kipunji often come out of the forest to steal bananas, and carrots from farms, leading farmers to set traps that can kill the monkeys. So WCS workers put unpleasant things such as chili oil (辣椒油) on the leaves of the crops to keep the monkeys away. Farmers have also started growing crops like potatoes, which the monkeys are less interested in eating.
To discourage people from cutting down trees in the kipunji’s habitats (栖息地), the WCS has established other sources of wood. Kipunji habitats have been turned into protected parks and reserves.
So far, their efforts have been successful. A 2022 study found that the area in which the monkeys live has increased in size by nearly 20%, and their population has risen to 1,966 animals. If the efforts continue, the population of kipunji monkey could double in 25 years. “It’s not perfect,” former WCS director Tim Davenport said. “But it’s in a considerably better place than it used to be.”
28.What does the underlined word “accumulating” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Unchanging. B.Declining. C.Increasing. D.Disappearing.
29.What did the local farmers do to keep the monkeys away
A.Put chili oil on the crops. B.Grow crops the monkeys like less.
C.Turn their habitats into parks. D.Ask the WCS for help.
30.Why have other sources of wood been established
A.To protect the kipunji’s habitats. B.To make profit from the wood.
C.To educate the local villagers. D.To develop the local economy.
31.Which statement will Tim Davenport probably agree with
A.Kipunji monkeys’ current living condition is perfect.
B.The number of kipunji monkey will double in 25 years.
C.The WCS hasn’t done enough in protecting the monkey.
D.Continuous efforts should be made to protect the kipunji.

Scientists say they have found detailed evidence of ancient rivers on Mars. The discovery supported existing evidence that Mars once had water. The researchers said their findings suggested rivers may have flowed on the surface of Mars for hundreds of thousands of years.
These images were captured by a camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The camera is able to take detailed pictures of the surface while orbiting the planet from about 400 kilometers away. A team of scientists studied the images, which showed a valley network on Mars.
The team was led by Francesco Salese, a geologist at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Salese said the scientists studied sedimentary (沉淀物) rocks from a 200 meters high rocky cliff. Sedimentary rocks form when sedimented (使沉积) and transported by water or wind.
“These are sedimentary rocks and were formed by rivers that were likely active for over 100,000 years,” Salese said, adding even without the ability to examine the cliff area on Mars, the pictures show strong similarities to sedimentary rocks found on the earth.
William McMahon is another geologist who was part of the investigation team. He said sedimentary rocks have long been studied on the earth to learn what conditions were like on our planet millions or even billions of years ago. Another leader of the team was Joel Davis, a researcher with Britain’s Natural History Museum. He said scientists had never before been able to examine such a rock formation with such great detail. They created 3D images of the area to get a more detailed understanding of it, which suggested some ancient Martian rivers were several meters deep.
32.What is the text mainly about
A.Scientists are able to study rock formation on Mars.
B.Scientists found evidence that there was water on Mars.
C.Mars sedimentary has many similarities to that on the earth.
D.A camera on NASA’S Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took pictures of the planet.
33.How did researchers make the findings
A.By comparing data. B.By analyzing images.
C.By studying rivers on the earth. D.By observing Mars through a telescope.
34.What was Joel Davis’ attitude towards the discovery
A.Excited. B.neutral. C.Unexpected. D.Disappointed.
35.Where is the text most likely from
A.A novel. B.A notebook. C.A travel guide. D.A newspaper.

Depression can also make a person feel worthless, but you can use encouraging words to support your friend until your friend remembers his or her worth again. 38 Avoid saying unnecessary things like, “It’s all in your head.” or “Snap out of it!”
Moving beyond depression with your friend
As your friend begins to feel better, keep your friend moving beyond depression by planning some fun outings. 39 And make plans to do those things so that your friend will always have something to look forward to. 39 Recent studies have shown it helps to ease the symptoms of depression and make people who are depressed feel more connected to others. I was sixteen years old and I loved music very much. I was dying to buy an album by my favourite band. However, the pocket money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I didn’t have any extra money to buy the album (音乐专辑), which made me disappointed.
Luckily, I found that there were many opportunities for part-time work in my neighbourhood. There were so many old people who needed help. So, in order to buy the album I wanted, I decided to find a part-time job to earn money.
I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. Fortunately, she answered that she indeed needed help in her garden.
That was a really hot summer day. My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out one by one. The task was tiring and boring, and I soon became really tired. However, thinking of the album I wanted, I gathered all my energy and kept moving.
“If only I had a portable electric fan (便携式电风扇)!” I said to myself, wiping the sweat from my face. After several hours of hard work, I was paid ten dollars. It was less than what I thought, but it was enough for the album.
After getting that ten dollars, I couldn’t wait to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. I believed it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts.
On the way to the supermarket, I was singing a song excitedly when I happened to see my mother who was working on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before; I just knew she was a saleswoman.

On behalf of the student union, I am calling for your attention to the current hot weather caused by climate change.
The purpose of this initiative is to raise awareness of environmental protection. We hope to encourage everyone to use resources more efficiently by trying their best to change their daily habits. To achieve this goal, we should start from things that are small but helpful, such as turning off lights and unplugging appliances when not in use.
I call on everybody to take action and join the campaign of environmental protection.

My mother was handing out leaflets to passers-by. Under the burning sun, her T-shirt was damp with sweat. She would give a leaflet to everyone that passed by, with an eager smile on her face. Some people just walked right past her while some others would refuse by waving their hands. There were also some people who would accept the leaflet politely but throw it into a garbage can right away. Seeing that scene, I couldn’t help but feel bad. I never considered my mother’s work to be so hard.
I continued making my way to the supermarket. However, when I found the album I had been longing for, my mother’s sweaty face came to my mind and I hesitated. I gave up buying the album and bought a portable electric fan instead. Then I returned to the place where my mother worked. She was obviously surprised to see me standing in front of her. When I took out the fan, telling her that it was for her, she was moved to tears and then broke into a happy smile. It was when I saw a big smile on her face that I understood the true value of money.bake, especially when I can make very creative desserts to share with people, but I don’t like to bake for myself.
