As my husband and I drove down a country road, we passed a fire station with a sign that read, "Are you ready for the next storm ” Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees and outages. We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.
We have had our share of storms in the past--a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days in a cold house weren't fun, but we learned so much from those early storms, things that made later storms easier to bear.
Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We bought a battery-operated radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we'd have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill(烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we don't forget to buy emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.
We're ready for the next storm, but we wouldn't have learned to do all those things if we hadn't encountered a storm in the past. The same is true spiritually. Those little storms in our lives are never fun, but they prepare us for the big storms--the big trials--that will come our way, They can teach us some valuable lessons.
Are you ready for the next storm Now is the time to get ready. . . not when the storm arrives.
4. Which can replace the underlined word "outages” in paragraph 1
A. weather change
B. virus' spreading
C. power failure
D. emotional reaction
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The lessons that storms can teach us.
B. The importance of being ready for storms.
C. The necessities the author bought for her daily life.
D. The preparations the author made for the next storm.
6. What does the author think of experiencing the past storms
A. It was rewarding.
B. It was annoying.
C. It was thrilling.
D. It was frightening.
7. What can we learn from the author's story
A. Things will work out.
B. Keep something for a rainy day.
C. Don't stop regardless of the weather.
D. Sunshine always comes after the storm.
C 5. D 6. A 7. B
根据划线词前一句提到“Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees”,后一句提到“We were stuck…and cut off from the outside world”作者和丈夫所在的地区刚刚受到飓风“厄玛”的袭击,causing downed trees导致树木倒下,他们被困,与外界失去联系。根据“cut off from the outside world”可以猜测“outages”意思为“停电”。
根据第三段中“Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.”
第四段中提到“but we wouldn't have learned to do all those things if we hadn't encountered a storm in the past.”以及“They can teach us some valuable lessons.”,作者认为如果以前没有经历过暴风雨,就不会学会做这些事情。 故选A。
作者最后一段提到“Now is the time to get ready. . . not when the storm arrives.”,作者认为现在要为以后的暴风雨做准备,而不是当暴风雨来临的时候才准备。

We all know that it’s good to be kind to others. But what does that mean for us What acts of kindness will make us happiest and who will benefit the most A new review of kindness research provides some answers.
Researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200, 000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose all had to meet certain criteria, such as including only adults and reporting good statistical data. Some were experiments while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were. The studies measured well-being in many ways, including both mental and physical health.
As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Although the relationship was not, stronger than it was, lead researcher Bryant Hui was still encouraged by the result. “Although the relationship is weaker, the effect still has a significant impact,” he says.
He and his colleagues considered when kindness might have a bigger impact on our well-being. One thing they found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness. It’s possible that informal helping may fill our more basic psychological needs for close relationships, which is why it could lead to greater happiness.
The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to have a higher sense of meaning and purpose in life. Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind involves effort which makes people feel confident about themselves and their abilities. And that provides a sense of meaning.
8. What is the text mainly about
A. Act of kindness makes us happiest. B. Being kind makes us healthy and happy.
C. Random acts of kindness are better than formal ones. D. Doing act of kindness to others improves our abilities.
9. How did the researchers get the finding
A. By doing surveys. B. By carrying out experiments.
C. By comparing research data. D. By analyzing results of articles.
10. Why does being kind give people a sense of meaning and purpose in life
A. Because it makes people healthier. B. Because it boosts close relationships.
C. Because it improves people’s confidence. D. Because it promotes awareness of responsibility.
11. Where is the text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A guide book. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
B 9. D 10. C 11. D

High school is difficult for everyone. You are going through an awkward time and you may either fit in right away or feel like a complete outcast. But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be good for you in the short term and long term.
Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to the school. Joining a club forces you to communicate with people who have similar interests as you. Even if you are the shyest and quietest person, you are sure to develop a relationship with at least one person in the club that you decide to join. Speaking from personal experience, I have met some of my best friends from my after-school activities and had many new doors open to me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that doing activities looks good on college applications (申请). Being known as outgoing is a highly valued trait (特质); it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there, be determined (意志坚定的), and best of all try new things. Another nice thing is that (depending on the activity) it could help you develop skills that you could use during a college interview.
Productivity is something that teens seem to continuously have a problem with. Most teens go to school and then come home and spend the rest of the day in front of the television or phone, but activities prohibit (阻止) this. Teens are also very easy to influence and if they fall into the wrong group of people they could fall into consequences such as problems with the law. Clubs are a great place to spend time and be with good people who you can fall back on if you need them.
Maybe the most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefit (益处) it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, keeping an eye on the time, and being organized are things you will use every single day of your life.
12. What might the underlined word “outcast” in paragraph 1 mean
A A person who is popular. B. A person who is not smart.
C. A person who is confident. D. A person who is not accepted.
13. What do colleges think highly of according to the text
A. The number of clubs you have joined.
B. The strong relationships you have built.
C. The bright personality you have developed.
D. The skills you have learned while forming a club.
14. What benefit of joining a club is talked about in paragraph 4
A. Increasing knowledge. B. Learning teamworking skills.
C. Improving your fitness level. D. Making good use of your time.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. What club should you join B. How to join a club you like
C. Why should you join a club D. Should you join a second club
D 13. C 14. D 15. C

根据文章第三段关键句“Another really nice thing about joining a club is that doing activities looks good on college applications. Being known as outgoing is a highly valued trait; it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there, be determined, and best of all try new things.”(参加社团的另一个好处是,参加活动在申请大学时看起来很不错。
根据文章第四段关键句“Productivity is something that teens seem to continuously have a problem with. Most teens go to school and then come home and spend the rest of the day in front of the television or phone, but activities prevent this.”(生产效率是青少年似乎一直存在的问题。
根据第一段“But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be good for you in the short term and long term.”(但无论您是否适合(或不适合),加入俱乐部在短期和长期对您都有好处。)

Find it hard to get started Try these suggestions to help you rise and shine — and be effective from morning till night.
● Get up earlier
Sleeping in can be a hard habit to break. Actually, it involves two things — going to bed earlier and getting up earlier. Start off by going to bed 15 minutes before your usual turn-in time and setting your alarm the same number of minutes earlier the next day. ____16____ .
● Have a good stretch in bed
Before you even open your eyes, stretch every extremity (四肢) for 15 seconds. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each finger, next your hand, and then your arm. ____17____. End with a neck and back stretch that gets you out of bed. By doing this, you will enhance the flow of blood through your system, providing your tissues with extra oxygen.
●____18____
The fewer choices you have to make, the better. Before going to bed, decide what you’re going to wear, work out which route you’ll take to work and what you’ll pack in your bag.
● Consult your morning calendar
Hang a large whiteboard in your kitchen. On it, write down all you need to know for that particular day, from doctor appointments to what you’re doing with your friends. Check it carefully while you sip your first cup of coffee or tea. ____19____.
● Get moving
____20____. But if you can get yourself into the habit, exercising in the morning can give you energy to jump-start your day.
A. Plan ahead
B. Move on to your toes, feet and legs
C. It will help you to structure your day
D. Spend less time choosing things when packing
E. Morning exercise can get you refreshed quickly

G 17. B 18. A 19. C 20. E
根据前文“Sleeping in can be a hard habit to break. Actually, it involves two things — going to bed earlier and getting up earlier. Start off by going to bed 15 minutes before your usual turn-in time and setting your alarm the same number of minutes earlier the next day. (睡懒觉是很难改掉的习惯。事实上,它包括两件事——早睡早起。从比平时早15分钟上床睡觉开始,第二天把闹钟设置得比平时早15分钟。)”可知,这里与上文构成顺承关系,是上文提到的方法带来的结果。即通过调整重置自己的睡眠周期。所以G选择项“Gradually reset your sleep cycle until you get to your desired wake-up time.(逐渐重置你的睡眠周期,直到你达到你想要的起床时间。)”
根据小标题“Have a good stretch in bed(在床上好好舒展一下)”和前文“Lift your arm and begin by stretching each finger, next your hand, and then your arm. (抬起你的手臂,从伸展每根手指开始,接着是你的手,然后是你的手臂。)”和下文“End with a neck and back stretch that gets you out of bed.(最后做一个颈部和背部伸展运动,让你起床。)” 所以B选项“Move on to your toes, feet and legs. (接着是脚趾、脚和腿。)”符合上下文语境。故选B项。
【18题详解】
根据后文“Before going to bed, decide what you’re going to wear, work out which route you’ll take to work and what you’ll pack in your bag.(在睡觉前,决定好你要穿什么,计划好上班的路线,以及包里要装什么。)” 故选A项。
根据前文“Hang a large whiteboard in your kitchen. On it, write down all you need to know for that particular day, from doctor appointments to what you’re doing with your friends. Check it carefully while you sip your first cup of coffee or tea.(在厨房里挂一块大白板。在上面,写下当天你需要知道的一切,从看医生到和朋友在一起做什么。当你喝第一杯咖啡或茶时,仔细检查它。)”可知,这里说明白板的作用,帮助你规划你的一天。所以C选项“It will help you to structure your day.(它将帮助你安排你的一天。)”
根据小标题“Get moving(动起来)”和后文“But if you can get yourself into the habit, exercising in the morning can give you energy to jump-start your day. (但如果你能养成这个习惯,早上锻炼可以给你力量,让你开始新的一天。)”可知,这里介绍晨练的好处。所以E选择项“Morning exercise can get you refreshed quickly. (晨练能让你很快精神焕发。)”符合上下文语境。故选E项。

Alphabetical (字母表的) order was a big problem for Keisha Williams. In every list, on every line, in the lunchroom and the classroom, teachers put all the W’s together. Alice Wilkins was always one place ahead of Keisha.
“You two are going to be friends,” said the girls’ teacher, Ms. Mubarak, “whether you like it or not.”
Yeah, right. Could she be friends with Alice “I doubt it,” Keisha thought. Alice was perfect. She was everything Keisha wasn’t. Alice changed her hairstyle every day. She always wore beautiful clothing. She had polish (指甲油) on her nails. Keisha had plain (普通的) nails, a very ordinary hairstyle — and not to mention her out-of-tyle clothes.
Alice had new fashionable notebooks. Keisha’s notebooks were boring black and white. Keisha complained to her mother that her notebooks were too plain. “They still have paper and lines,” her mother said. “You don’t need glitter (华丽) to make you smart.”
Keisha thought Alice’s mother treated her like a grown-up. Alice had a house key and said that she always let herself into her apartment. But when Keisha came home, she had to ring for her mother to open the door. And every time, her mother would give her a big bear hug. That’s for babies, Keisha always thought, trying to free herself from her mother’s arms.

Keisha nodded.
Later, in the cafeteria, Keisha and Alice worked on math problems together. Alice discovered that Keisha was a math talent, “How do you do that ” Alice wondered. “I work with my mom,” Keisha explained. “I work on math problems by myself first, then mom tests me.” “Oh,” said Alice, “my mom always works late and doesn’t have time to help me. You are lucky to have such a great mom.” That day when Keisha got home from school, her mother met her at the door and gave her the usual bear hug. This time, Keisha didn’t avoid her. She smiled.

A. It was rewarding.
B. It was annoying.

D. Sunshine always comes after the storm.

C By comparing research data. D. By analyzing results of articles.
10. Why does being kind give people a sense of meaning and purpose in life
A. Because it makes people healthier. B. Because it boosts close relationships.
C Because it improves people’s confidence. D. Because it promotes awareness of responsibility.
11. Where is the text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A guide book. C. A novel. D. A magazine.

A. A person who is popular.
