A man who lives alone in the Rocky Mountains has become a hero for climate scientists because of his unusual hobby. The man is called Billy Barr——he writes his name with small b’s——and for 50 years he has been the only person who kept living in Gothic, a small town in Colorado.
In the summer of 1973, Billy decided he wasn’t happy in the regular world, so he moved to Gothic, where he felt more relaxed. Every summer, scientists come to Gothic’s Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (生物实验室) ——or RMBL——for research. But in winter, Billy is alone. Having little to do, Billy started keeping records of snow levels, temperatures and animal sightings. For Billy this was fun. He has always liked numbers. So he continued keeping records——for 50 years.
Over time, he started working at the RMBL, looking after the place and keeping records. He made the laboratory his home, and became friends with the scientists. One day, Billy mentioned his hobby to a scientist, who asked to see his records and realized at once how important they were. Those records of fifty years show climate change and its effects very clearly: Winters are getting warmer, and the snow is disappearing earlier. Now Billy’s records have been used in many academic papers and there’s a short film about him called The Snow Guardian. He still keeps his records, but now he uses Excel and a website instead of notebooks.
Although he has other hobbies, like playing cricket and watching Bollywood movies, his records have made him famous among climate scientists. But why does he write his name with small b’s Well, Billy said that it felt more comfortable. “I live a quiet little life,” he said. “And I enjoy it.”
4. Why did Billy move to Gothic
A. He didn’t get along with his family. B. The life there was relaxing.
C. He applied for a job there. D. He dreamed of being a scientist.

7. What can we learn from Billy’s story
A. Nothing can stop us from realizing our dreams.
B. Success means getting personal needs satisfied.
C. Life is not perfect, but that’s what makes it interesting.
D. With love and patience, everyone can make a difference.
B 5. C 6. C 7. D

根据第三段中“One day, Billy mentioned his hobby to a scientist, who asked to see his records and realized at once how important they were. Those records of fifty years show climate change and its effects very clearly: Winters are getting warmer, and the snow is disappearing earlier. Now Billy’s records have been used in many academic papers and there’s a short film about him called The Snow Guardian. (一天,比利向一位科学家提起了他的爱好,这位科学家要求看他的记录,并立刻意识到这些记录的重要性。这些50年的记录非常清楚地显示了气候变化及其影响:冬天越来越暖和,雪消失得越来越早。现在比利的记录被用在了许多学术论文中,还有一部关于他的短片叫做《冰雪守护者》)”可知,Billy的这些记录非常有用。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“So he continued keeping records——for 50 years.(于是他继续记录了50年。)” 再根据最后一段“ ‘I live a quiet little life,” he said. “And I enjoy it.’(“我过着平静的小生活,”他说。“我很享受。”)”可知,他喜欢记录气候的变化,并且他的记录的资料在学术界发挥了巨大影响。因此本文告诉我们的是:有了爱和耐心,每个人都能有所作为。故选D。

A small recording room outside the Congolese capital Kinshasa has become a safe space for homeless teenagers. They sing about their life on the streets and dream of a better future. The homeless sing about their childhood, living conditions, and living experiences at the Mokili Na Poche cultural center. It is a safe space that allows young people and children to wash and eat.
“It really makes me happy when I sing,” said 19-year-old Mavakala. He has slept on the streets for years. There are more than 20,000 homeless children in Kinshasa. Other teenagers looked on with happiness as Mavakala turned on the recording equipment at the center in late August.
Mavakala dreams of bigger goals after having the chance to record in a real recording space. He said, “It stimulates me and I tell myself — ah, life belongs to (属于) brave persons.” He added that U. S. rapper Lil Wayne and Congolese star Fally Ipupa influenced his music.
He has been coming to the center for the past three years, taking part in the music, art, and reading classes it offers throughout the day. Founder Cedrick Tshimbalanga hopes these skills and daily experiences will help the children build a base for their life and their voices.
“With music, young people are able to talk about their daily experience — everything they live through daily: happiness and sadness,” said Tshimbalanga, who plans to release (发行) their music soon.
The classes are also a chance for young people to make up for lost chances in life. While the Democratic Republic of Congo has made progress in education, over 7 million children aged between 5 and 17 still do not have schooling, UNICEF found.
“Break free from the homeless life, my friend. It’s time to see what the future holds for you,” Mavakala sang during an excitement-filled performance at the center in August.
8. What do the homeless children do at the cultural center
A. Meet some famous musicians.
B. Express their feelings through songs.
C. Find a suitable job to support themselves.
D. Protect themselves from any possible dangers.
9. What does the underlined word “stimulates”in paragraph 3 mean
A. Encourages. B. Worries. C. Surprises. D. Warns.
10. What is Tshimbalanga’s goal in doing his work
A. To offer children a happy childhood.
B. To prevent poor children sleeping in the street.
C. To prepare the homeless for a better future.
D. To train young people to become future artists.
11. What are the words of Mavakala’s song used to do
A. Remind people to make up for the lost chances.
B. Tell about the difficult life of the homeless.
C. Describe his hope for the wonderful life.
D. Call on those in trouble to change their lives.

Alaska’s Mendenhall glacier (冰川) is about 20 minutes by car from Juneau, the state capital. It is one of the area’s most popular sites for tourists. But climate change has caused the ice to melt (融化). That means it is losing more snow and ice than it gains.
Experts guess that by 2050, people will not be able to see the Mendenhall glacier from the visitor center that was built for it. That is already the case at some other glacier visitor centers in Alaska. The disappearing glacier leads to problems for the Alaskan tourism industry.
Tourism is an important part of Juneau’s economy. About 1.6 million cruise ship passengers are expected to stop in Juneau in 2023. That is the most ever in one year. On especially busy days, 20,000 people arrive each day in the city that has only 30,000 full-time people. Cruise ships are large boats with sleeping places that carry tourists from one place to another. Many cruises start a week-long trip to Alaska in either Seattle, Washington, or Vancouver, Canada.
Manoj Pillai is a cruise ship worker from India. He recently got off his ship and went to see the Mendenhall glacier. “The glacier is so beautiful now,” he said. But he wondered what it looked like 10 or 20 years ago.
Jennifer Dumas lives in Washington, D.C. She knows what Alaska’s glaciers looked like in the past. She and her husband first visited the state and its glaciers in the 1990s. She talked about seeing the Mendenhall glacier over 20 years ago. She went to Glacier Bay National Park and spent the night near the Mendenhall glacier.
“Where we used to camp, you could see the glacier. It has retreated (退缩) so far that you can’t see the glacier anymore. So we have pictures of us in front of the glacier, but you can no longer take such pictures,” Jennifer said.
12. How does the author stress the importance of tourism to Alaska
A. By listing the number of tourists. B. By showing the great benefit from tourism.
C. By describing native people’s living conditions. D. By sharing the governments’ support.
13. What does the underlined word”it”in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The ship. B. India. C. The glacier. D. Juneau.
14. What does the author want to express by mentioning Jennifer Dumas
A. The tourism value of the glacier. B. The glacier is melting quickly.
C. The glacier is losing its attraction. D. The memory of visiting the glacier.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Alaska’s Glaciers May Disappear in the Future
B. Alaska Is Challenged by Too Many Tourists
C. It’s Time to Take Action to Stop Global Warming
D. Climate Change Influences Alaska’s Tourism Industry
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据第三段中“Tourism is an important part of Juneau’s economy. About 1.6 million cruise ship passengers are expected to stop in Juneau in 2023. That is the most ever in one year. On especially busy days, 20,000 people arrive each day in the city that has only 30,000 full-time people. (旅游业是朱诺经济的重要组成部分。预计到2023年,约有160万游轮乘客将在朱诺停靠。这是有史以来最多的一年。在特别繁忙的日子里,每天有2万人来到这个只有3万名全职员工的城市。)”可知,旅游业是Juneau经济的重要组成部分,作者通过列举游客的人数来强调旅游业对阿拉斯加的重要性。故选A。
根据划线词前面的内容“Manoj Pillai is a cruise ship worker from India. He recently got off his ship and went to see the Mendenhall glacier. “The glacier is so beautiful now,” he said. (Manoj Pillai是一名来自印度的游轮工人。他最近下船去看门登霍尔冰川。“冰川现在太美了,”他说。)”以及划线词后面的内容“…looked like 10 or 20 years ago(……看起来像是10或20年前的样子)”可知,Manoj Pillai是一名来自印度的游轮工作人员。他最近下船去看门登霍尔冰川。“冰川现在太美了, ”他说。但他想知道,10年或20年前,它是什么样子的。此处it指的是门登霍尔冰川。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Where we used to camp, you could see the glacier. It has retreated (退缩) so far that you can’t see the glacier anymore. So we have pictures of us in front of the glacier, but you can no longer take such pictures,” Jennifer said. (“在我们过去露营的地方,你可以看到冰川。它已经退缩了,以至于你再也看不到冰川了。所以我们有我们在冰川前的照片,但你不能再拍这样的照片了,” Jennifer说。)”可知,Jennifer说冰川已经退缩了,而且退缩的如此之远,以至于再也看不到冰川了,因此作者通过提及Jennifer的例子,说明了冰川融化的非常快。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Alaska’s Mendenhall glacier (冰川) is about 20 minutes by car from Juneau, the state capital. It is one of the area’s most popular sites for tourists. But climate change has caused the ice to melt (融化). That means it is losing more snow and ice than it gains.

I was in my early twenties. I had graduated from college with a degree in Education but still couldn’t find a full-time teaching job. I only did short-time jobs here and there in different schools. I waited each morning then for the phone to ring so that I could work as a substitute (替补者) that day.
It wasn’t easy. One day I would be teaching high school science and the next day I would be running after little kids in a kindergarten around the playground. This time I found myself in a local grade school working as a 5th grade teacher for the day. Although it was a short-time job, I was determined not to just slide by carelessly.
I went over the lesson plans, taught the subjects, and stayed positive with the students. I smiled, praised the kids when they got something right, and encouraged them if they didn’t. I was determined to learn from the great teachers I had when I was a boy and not the critical (挑剔的) ones who always left me feeling bad.
At the end of the day, I designed a little goodbye program for the students. I had prepared dozens of small paper bags in advance, each containing a chocolate bar and a small card with encouraging messages, such as “Where there is a will, there is a way” “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. The cards also had my names on them.
The students were very excited and happy about this activity. They excitedly opened the paper bags of the gifts and ate the chocolates while reading the words on the cards. They also exchanged cards and read different sayings. In this way, I gave the children a happy day.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Just as the students got on the bus after school, a girl handed me a note.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Many years later, when I was a schoolmaster, a young woman came in for a job.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Just as the students got on the bus after school, a girl handed me a note. I didn’t open it until they all left. It was a lovely drawing full of childlike wonder and a note that said, “You are the best teacher that I have ever had!” My mouth fell open in shock. It really amazed me that I had touched that girl’s heart so deeply. I took that note home and put it in a book. Every time I felt down or discouraged, I would take it out and look at it. It always made me smile.
Many years later, when I was a schoolmaster, a young woman came in for a job. She seemed very surprised to see me, saying excitedly, “It’s you! My dear teacher!” I looked at her, not recognizing her. I was surprised when she reminded me of the little girl who handed me a note many years ago. We talked a lot about the encouragement we received from each other. The next day, she came to my school to teach. How small actions can make a difference to others!

I was in my early twenties I had graduated from college with a degree in Education but still couldn’t find a full-time teaching job.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
