Ian McKenna was in third grade when he learned that many kids at his school weren’t getting enough to eat at home. He wanted to help, but local volunteer organizations turned him away, saying he was too young. So he decided to find his own solution. For years, he had been gardening with his mother, and they often sent their vegetables to the neighbors. “I’m good at gardening,” said McKenna. “Why not plant a garden at school so that kids in need can take food home ”
McKenna persuaded his school to set aside space for a garden; then he asked the community for donations of seeds and equipment. Other students donated their time. Within months, McKenna’s garden was producing lettuces, tomatoes and cucumbers for students and their families. Now, several years later, McKenna’s Giving Garden project has expanded to five area schools in addition to his own backyard garden. For most of his gardening activities, McKenna wears the same T-shirt in different colors, with his personal motto on it: BE A GOOD HUMAN. To him, that means helping in any way you can, no matter what your age.
“Even a smile might change someone’s life,” he said. “It lets them know that they are important. It can make their day.”
When COVID-19 hit the U. S., McKenna redoubled his efforts, cooking up to 100 meals to distribute (分发) them to the hungry on the weekends. When social distancing meant that volunteers couldn’t work on their community garden, he started offering online classes and a gardening hotline so families could grow at home. While gardening is his core focus, McKenna says he is always looking for new ways to help the hungry.
4. What led to McKenna’s decision to help the kids in his own way
A. His school’s support.
B. His mother’s suggestion.

D Being refused by volunteer groups.

“Easy come, easy go” as the old saying goes. It’s easy to do easy things, but they don’t carry the challenges and rewards of doing something difficult. Stanley said he tried to express that view everywhere he went. And he spoke from experience, having spent a career that included the time as a NASA astronaut, US Navy captain, fighter pilot, and engineer.
Stanley spoke at the University of North Alabama, sharing stories about his experience of spending a year on the International Space Station (ISS). He said the physical pressure of living in weightlessness for a year was hard to describe and that the fluids in his head sometimes made him feel like he was standing on his head. It also needed some time to recover when he returned home. “My legs were weak and it would be uncomfortable to sit for a while because my body hadn’t had that pressure so long,” Stanley said.
He discussed life aboard the Space Station, including spending time with Russian astronauts. He had managed to get along well with everyone aboard as they lived together, worked together, and had to rely on each other. He thought it was one of the most rewarding things in his life.
Though life there was not easy, Stanley never regretted being an astronaut and going to space. He also discussed experiences growing up, admitting that he wasn’t always the greatest student but was able to overcome that through hard work and determination.
“Never give up or lower your dreams. If you work for it, all things are possible. There is a zero percent chance of succeeding if you don’t even try. And when you succeed after trying hard, you’ll find it really rewarding,” Stanley said in the end.
8. Based on Stanley’s experience, which is his major occupation
A. A speaker. B. A spaceman.
C. A firefighter. D. A scientist.
9. What may benefit Stanley most when he lived with Russian astronauts
A. He developed good relationships with others.
B. He picked up different cultures.
C. He found the fun of living in the Space Station.
D. He won some awards through teamwork.
10. Which of the following can best describe Stanley
A. Determined. B. Aggressive.
C. Gifted. D. Disgusting.
11. What does the author intend to tell us from Stanley’s story
A. Nurture passes nature.
B. Life is not all roses.
C. Difficult things are demanding but rewarding.
D. Have a vision in order to win.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was invented by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers. It is a self-report questionnaire indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. The MBTI personality inventory (量表) sorts people into 16 type categories, each of which is represented by four-letter codes such as INFP and ESTJ. Every year, about 1.5 million people have enjoyed discovering their personality type by completing the MBTI. Many companies, as well as hundreds of universities, use it in hiring and training.
Nevertheless, the MBTI has received a noticeable criticism from the academic community. Some research suggests the MBTI is unreliable because the same person can get different results when retaking the test. Other studies have questioned the validity of the MBTI, which is the ability of the test to accurately link the “types” to outcomes in the real world -for example, how well people classified as a certain type will perform in a given job.
Merve Emre, a professor a Oxford University, points out that it would be more scientifically advisable to score the MBTI scales continuously to show people the degree to which they resemble the types. Even when the MBTI’s results don’t quite match your intuition (直觉) about yourself or are just wrong, they can still provide self-insight and insight into differences and similarities between people.
Scoring and interpreting the MBTI the way other personality inventories are scored and interpreted might be less fun than finding. All of the folklore (民间看法) about INFPs, ESTJs, etc. would have to be dismissed. But, in the end the MBTI is sufficiently reliable and valid enough to be useful in a number of real-world contexts.
12. What do we know about the MBTI from the first paragraph
A. It is a personality-testing tool. B. It is divided into 16 categories.
C. It is a study of personal preference. D. It is a questionnaire on four-letter codes.
13. Why does the MBTI invite criticism
A. It performs badly in job interviews B. Its reliability has been questioned.
C. It requires people to retake the test D. Its advantages are not fully shown.
14. What does Merve Emre think of the MBTI
A. It is beyond criticism. B. It is a more scientific test.
C. It is less fun than other tests. D. It is useful for self-exploration.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How Can We Use the MBTI B. Why do We Criticise the MBTI
C. Is the MBTI Totally Meaningless D. Is Scoring the MBTI Really Necessary

S. McKenna redoubled his efforts, cooking up to 100 meals to distribute (分发) them to the hungry on the weekends. When social distancing meant that volunteers couldn’t work on their community garden, he started offering online classes and a gardening hotline so families could grow at home. While gardening is his core focus, McKenna says he is always looking for new ways to help the hungry.

15 Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How Can We Use the MBTI B. Why do We Criticise the MBTI
C. Is the MBTI Totally Meaningless D. Is Scoring the MBTI Really Necessary
