Profile pictures
Definition
A profile picture is the image that represents a social media account in all its interactions on a platform. Profile pictures are displayed next to the account names on posts, comments and mentions, depending on the platform.
Profile pictures make a visual impact on social media users and potential customers, making it important for businesses to select the right images. For a company, a profile picture should be the best part of that brand’s image, usually combining its logo.
How to select a profile picture
Profile pictures should be easily recognizable as belonging to your business. While using an independent logo is the most common strategy, some brands use a lifestyle image that includes that logo.
Other brands rely more on a person — a recognizable “face of the brand”. If this is your marketing strategy, your profile image should be creative and attractive:
●Use professional photography and design.
●Colorful images are better at catching people’s eyes.
●Photos should be taken in bright light.
●Show a smiling face.
If you have multiple social media outlets, use the same profile picture on every platform to create a consistent brand image.
Above all, use high-quality images. Keep in mind a few basic rules:
●Images should be clear.
●Make images simple and visually striking.
●Always meet requirements of the platform’s image size.
If the platform allows, add a description to your profile picture that includes links to your website.
21.Why is it vital for a business to choose a proper profile picture
A.A profile picture is equal to a business.
B.A profile picture has a visual influence on potential customers.
C.A profile picture is usually displayed next to the account names.
D.A profile picture is often the best part of a company’s brand image.
22.Which principle should be followed when choosing a profile picture
A.Avoid photos taken in bright light.
B.Always use a lifestyle image with the logo.
C.Make images simple as well as visually appealing.
D.Adopt various profile pictures for different social media outlets.
23.Where is the text likely to be found
A.On a business website. B.On a business forum.
C.In an academic report. D.In a school brochure.

Environmental health is defined as the control of the factors in the environment that may have harmful effects on people’s physical, mental, or social well-being. Because natural disasters expose people to danger by bringing up or threatening their immediate environment, effective management of environmental health after a natural disaster is of great importance.
The environmental health measures that must be considered after a natural disaster include the supply of appropriate shelter for individuals or groups of people left homeless, the distribution of safe and accessible water, and the protection and distribution of safe food products and so on.
To effectively manage environmental health during and after a disaster, it is important that a state of preparation is in effect before the event actually occurs. During an emergency, success lately depends on making good, rapid judgment and appropriate response measures. High-level decision makers, therefore, must be familiar with sound measures beforehand and should be given an accurate judgment of the disasters specific effects as quickly as possible.

The first time I ever really noticed a disabled person, I was studying in the third grade.I saw some disabled people before, but I never really knew or cared about what those persons went through.
When a new student arrived in my third grade class, I thought it would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism(孤独症). He sometimes had random outbursts(随意发作) during class and we would stand there, doing nothing because we didn't know why he was doing that. When he sat down at desk, we would try to get away from him. After class, we would play jokes on each other, imitating(模仿) Derek, and laughing about it.
Then one day, Derek's mom came to our class and talked with us.She told us that Derek wasn't just having random outbursts--he was trying to communicate. Then she chose a volunteer and filled that person's mouth with soft sweets. When we found the volunteer had great trouble in trying to speak, the mother explained that was what Derek was going through every day. We all understood her meaning.
After this talk, no one tried to make fun of Derek or run away from him.We accepted his outbursts in class and he became one of our friends.Having a class with Derek has taught me to have an open mind to those who are different from us.My experience in having an autistic classmate has provided me with a good lesson.

Have you ever been in a situation where your name is spelled incorrectly on a Starbucks cup even after you spell out every single letter to the barista(咖啡师)? What would you feel when a room freezes into a sudden silence as soon as you start talking — living with a foreign accent is difficult?
Recently a gentleman in his 40s noticed my accent, and asked me where I was from. Then he inquired about what I majored in and how long I’d been in the US to learn English. After a polite exchange, he said sympathetically that he couldn’t imagine how hard it was for me to deal with reading long English texts. Furthermore, he seemed genuinely puzzled to the fact that I learned to speak English “so well” in an African country. Usually I would have shown my defensive self, pointing out his ignorance and telling him how sad I felt that his education had failed him. But I didn’t.
Sometimes these everyday experiences can drive me crazy. I even think of trying to actively “sound American” as a way to escape the stereotypes(模式化观念) that people have. But if I practiced an American accent enough, would people actually focus on what I say rather than how I say it
Actually, to speak in our accent itself is to tell a story of identity. My housemates and I come from seven different countries: Jamaica, USA, Gambia, Yemen, China, Ecuador and SA.None of us speak native-like English, but we understand each other perfectly and get along harmoniously. If we all sounded the same, I think that would be boring. Together, we make up a cocktail of beautifully crafted accents with seasoned experiences. None of us owes anyone an explanation about why we don’t sound like how you expect us to.
Accepting that people sound different and embracing them for that reason is important. We are a generation of different languages, dialects, and accents. The world is more and more diverse with various cultures, and if that means making extra efforts to understand someone’s accent and learning how to spell their name, that’s just how it’s going to be.
Deal with it.
32.What purpose do the two questions serve in the first paragraph
A.To introduce the topic of the passage. B.To share some unpleasant experiences.
C.To show it’s hard to live with an accent. D.To express disappointment at the service.
33.What does the author probably do
A.An English teacher. B.An international student.
C.A Starbuck waiter. D.A university professor.
34.How did the author probably feel after talking with the gentleman
A.Ashamed. B.Amazed. C.Amused. D.Annoyed.
35.Which of the following might the author most likely agree with
A.Efforts should be made to get rid of accents.
B.We should speak the way we are expected to.
C.Acceptance of accents is needed in the society.
D.Education contributes to native-like English.

The Dickensons lived on the eastern coast of America and the three boys, Carl, Simon, and little Ben loved the water. The elder brothers usually helped their dad on his farm and took care of their little brother.
There was an island off shore in the distance. One Saturday the two elder brothers decided to go there for an adventure. When they were leaving, their father said, “Boys, I have to go to town and I want you to take care of Ben. You can carry him together but be careful!” Although they thought Ben was too young to take risks, they still took him.
When the three arrived at the shore, they were lucky to find an old rowboat with oars (桨).Carl and Simon took turns to paddle (划桨)the boat.
Suddenly they noticed the old boat leaking slowly. Carl asked them not to worry and said that they could empty water when they got back. But as the boys neared the island, they struck a rock hidden under the water. It enlarged the hole, more water pouring in. They were glad to be safe on shore!
“How can we get back with the weight of us ” Simon wondered.
Carl answered “You row Ben across, and then come back for me. If we move fast, it won’t sink with only two.” Simon agreed.
The boys started to explore the island. It was flat with many trees. In a couple of hours they had gone all around the island, but when they headed for their boat, they were shocked! Their boat was bumping against trees. The tide was coming in! The island was disappearing!
The boys took a rock and tried to fill it into the hole but they only made it worse because of the old wood. Carl thought a minute “Simon, you take Ben as fast as you can. Then run for the house and see if Dad can come to rescue me. I can climb a tree or something that will give me maybe another hour.” The brothers hugged. Then Carl turned the boat around, helped Ben get in and pushed it as hard as he could toward home
Half an hour passed and only a small part of the island was above water now.

M: Jenny, congratulations!
W: Thank you, Mike.
M: What happened I thought you’d be pretty happy.
W: Oh, it’s just all those years of struggle becoming “an overnight success”. Everyone said to me “Lucky you”, but it’s only hard work that brings me success. And the record company wants the next record with better songs. But I’ve no idea about songs now. In fact, I’m wondering whether I’ve used up all my inspiration.
M: Come on, Jenny. Take it easy. You just need a break.
8.C 9.A 10.B

M: It’s great! I’m in Stowe Middle School and I’m a member of its theater group.

M: I've been with my present company for four years and in my present position since two years ago. During the time, I've been named "Salesperson of the Month" three times, and have taken top sales awards several times as well.
W: Good. You are just the person we want.

Bill is my friend. We once shared a renting apartment at college. Living with Bill was fun. We soon found out that we had a lot in common and quickly became close friends. We always had really good discussions about everything: politics, environment, literature, music, and even cooking. But we felt unhappy with each other a couple of times about the housework. Bill often asked me to be more tidy, while I thought life’s too short to worry about things like that.
When we graduated three years ago, we went our separate ways and since then our lives have been very different. I went back to my hometown and got a job as a production assistant for art exhibitions. I like my job because I’m helping young people to get involved in the arts. I’m not earning very much, but I get a lot of personal satisfaction from my job. Bill is earning a lot of money, but he doesn’t see me very often now. When he comes down for the weekend we have laugh, but our lifestyles are so different now that we don’t have very much to talk about.

67.Half an hour passed and only a small part of the island was above water now. The sun was setting; darkness was overtaking Carl. Realizing the island would be flooded, he searched around and selected the strongest and tallest tree. Exhausted and scared, he settled himself in the trunk. Shortly afterwards, just as he was about to climb to the higher branch to avoid the rising tide, he heard a motor noise. He gazed toward home and could see a lantern flashing in the distance, then voices calling.
In a few minutes, dad picked up Carl into his motorboat and hugged him. Tears streaming down his cheek, Carl cried “Thank you for your timely appearance!” On the way back, dad explained, “When I got home from town, I couldn’t find you, so I tracked you to the shore. I went back for the motorboat and then I met Simon and Ben. The rest is history. Son, I am proud of you. What you did in risking your life for your brothers was wonderful and you demonstrated that it meant to truly love someone.”
