The Statue of Liberty in New York
The Statue of Liberty in New York city is a symbol of American freedom which is known throughout the world.
The statue is a tall lady holding a torch(火炬). It became a symbol of freedom in the first half of the 20th century. That’s when millions of European immigrants(移民) came to the United States by ship, when they passed through the harbor, the Statue of Liberty was a welcoming mark.
The Statue of Liberty’s right hand holds a gold torch high above her head. He left arm holds a book of law with the date, July 4th, 1776 on its cover. The date is Americans’ National Day. She is 305 feet high. The lady herself stands 151 feet tall.
The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States in 1884 by the people from France. The gift is a symbol of a friendship between the two countries. During the American Revolution, thousands of Frenchmen donated money to build the statue.
After it was completed, the statue was on show in France. Later it was taken to the United States and was put at its present place.
