第二节(满分 25 分)
Possible version 1
However without warning, my strength was running out. My lungs fought to take in enough
air, and my feet transformed into cement bricks. Neck and ne ck with one of my greatest rivals, I
could see the finish line. I had begun the final sprint into glory when my knees buckled and my legs
gave way. Nothing I could do would make them hold my weight. They were as weak as jelly. Even
though I knew my dreams of victory had been destroyed, I had to finish the race. With all of the
strength left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled, inch by inch, across the finish line.
Shame pulsed through my veins as Dad squatted down and pulled me into his arms.
I whispered, "I'm so sorry I disappointed you, Dad." He gave me a gentle smile and said, “You
could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your
best.” Lifting my face, I saw my dad's eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time, and the work we
had put into our dream. The miles we had run together, all for this race, flashed across my mind.
"But we worked so hard. What about our dream " I asked. In that second, the world stood still. He
reached over for my hand, holding back his own tears, and said. "Don't you know that you are my
dream come true "
Possible version 2
However, without warning, my strength was running out. I tried to accelerate, but the
exhausted legs dragged me down. I tried to gather every ounce of strength inside my body, but it
seemed to be losing fast. “Would three years of preparation for the moment go in vain and our dream
end like this” I asked myself, unwilling to accept the fact. Even worse, the other runners
took advantage of the chance and passed me one by one, leaving me farther and farther behind.
Desperate, I looked in the direction of my dad, who was watching me and cheering me on. Though
our dream would never be achieved here, I struggled on and, step by step, sweated my way across
the finish line, where my dad gathered me into his arms, concern written all over his face.
I whispered, “I'm so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” Fearing that I had fallen short of my
dad's expectation, I looked down, not daring to meet his eyes. Patting my shoulder gently, dad
comforted me,“ You never disappointed me, and you will never.” He further explained that though
I didn't make it into the top 15, I was already a winner as I had done my utmost when adversity
struck. Looking up into dad's eyes, I seemed to find back my confidence. And the days when we ran
together through dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the smell of the dairy farm
all came fresh back in my mind. I knew all dad's dream was not about winning a prize; his dream
was all about me.

W: I'm sorry. This jacket was on sale. We don't return on sale items. You can exchange it for
something else or we can give you a credit note.
M: Do you have the jacket in a larger size
W: Let me check ... I'm afraid we're all sold out.
M: Okay, I'll take a credit note. How long is it good for
W: It's good for a year.
M: Okay. I'll come back next week and see if I can find something else he might like.

W: What does it take to be a head chef Paul Heaton is here to tell us all about it.
M:Thanks! After I left school, I tried a few other things, including the local supermarket, but nothing
really interested me until I got a job as a kitchen assistant. It was hard, dirty work and the pay wasn't
great either. On the positive side, I was in a really busy kitchen where the top chefs were highly
skilled and during my breaks I could watch and learn.
W: Those days are behind you now, aren't they
M: Yes, these days I'm a head chef, so I'm responsible for organizing the kitchen. This includes
preparing the menus, selecting and training staff and keeping the kitchen in good working order.
And now I don't have to cook every day, but can choose to do it when I really want to.
W: What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming a chef
M:You must be prepared to deal with stressful situations. And you have to be able to think quickly—
if the fish you wanted to use for your main dish doesn't arrive, you've got to invent something
different. People think that preparing food in a first-class restaurant is a complicated and difficult
thing to do. This is partly true. But the key to success is to buy the best and the freshest food available
and keep things simple.

I'll kick things off with an awesome story from 2015, in Silicon Valley. Our project was called
“Project Skylark” and with Dr. Jack Thompson, a Cornell University bird expert. We wanted to
teach a machine to recognize different birds.
It was amazing. “Avis”, the AI system, learnt to improve its accuracy over time. In six months,
it could identify bird species better than human experts! This showed the incredible potential of AI!
It's come a long way since the 1950s with Alan Turing's ideas. Modern systems can analyze
data, spot patterns, and make decisions on their own. This power has opened up endless possibilities
in areas like healthcare, finance, and transportation.
One inspiring example comes from Dr. Alice Chen, who in 2018 led a team at Stanford
University to develop the computer program “MediScan” that analyzes images and detects early
signs of diseases like cancer. MediScan’s accuracy and speed massively surpassed human
capabilities, saving thousands of lives.
However, it has its challenges and risks. A 2020 report showed concern of AI taking jobs and
affecting economy. I love AI but there's tough conversations about balancing progress, job security,
privacy and security as systems get better. Together, we can create a future where AI helps us
achieve our wildest dreams.

Volunteer with Red Cross
Volunteering expands your skills and experience, increases your employability and is a way to stay active and engaged with the community. It’s also a way for you to give back to the community and help people who need a hand. Here are some of our community services:
Aged Care Services for older people
Our social support and aged care services provide a range of support for older people. They can be matched one-on-one with a volunteer, receive regular caring welfare calls, be driven to appointments, be provided with a personal alarm or be delivered a healthy meal. We can also support them to access appropriate housing and care.
Homelessness Services
Red Cross believes that everyone deserves a home that is safe, secure and affordable. In an average year, Red Cross helps 2,180 people to find housing, supports 1,360 people at risk of becoming homeless, and provides 43,400 meals for people experiencing hardship.
We support people who are at risk of losing their rental property by negotiating with landlords( 房 东 ) or finding more suitable accommodation. We also help clients to manage the potential issues which contribute to their housing problems, including income management, misuse of alcohol or other drugs.
We build life skills by supporting people who have been homeless to develop community connection and friendship through one-on-one matching with a volunteer, providing education and training support, and teaching first-aid skills. These new connections and skills make a big difference, helping people move out of cycles of homelessness.
Mental Health Support Services
Red Cross provides mental health support services and programs that promote the participation of people with a mental illness in the community and support the well-being of young people. Red Cross wants to support those people to be more independent, to improve their well-being and social connection, and to build their confidence and skills.

Just 10 days after a first failed try ended with Franky Zapata up to his neck in water, the French jet-ski champion successfully crossed the English Channel on his self-made “fly-board” Sunday morning.
Taking off at 8:17 a.m., he flew across the 21.7 miles that separate the French town of Sangatte from Saint Margaret’s at Cliffe on British coast. The trip took a total of 22 minutes with one refueling stop in the middle.
The French inventor’s flight came 110 years after famous pioneering pilot Louis Bleriot flew the first plane across the Channel in 1909. Zapata became known as the “flying soldier” when he showed off his invention before the world’s media at France’s annual Bastille Day military parade on July 14.
At a press conference on Saturday, Zapata said he felt much more confident of success than his failed journey just over a week ago. On July 25, Zapata had launched near Sangatte Beach on his flying board, but had to abandon the challenge when he dropped a few minutes later into English waters after hitting the supply boat platform at very low speed.
Zapata arrived on British soil at 8:38 a.m., landing on a platform in a field at the top of a cliff. He thanked his wife, his family and his team upon landing. He also thanked the two. British women who own the field he landed on.
Zapata spoke to the French television networks in Saint Margaret’s, explaining that landing on the stage of the refueling boat was still very tricky. They had planned for the boat to remain still, but it was “impossible” as the boat moved along with the waves. Zapata burst into tears when his interview was interrupted by a call from his 9-year-old son.
Why did Franky Zapata become distinguished
He had an accident while performing his jet-skiing.
He was the first to cross the English Channel successfully.
He invented a new flying machine to cross the English Channel.
He was the pilot to cross the English Channel with the shortest time.
What did Zapata think of landing on the stage of the refueling boat
A. Rewarding. B. Challenging. C. A piece of a cake. D. Impossible.
How did Franky Zapata feel when his son phoned him during the interview
A. Motivated. B. Astonished. C. Frustrated. D. Anxious.
What is the genre of the passage
A. A news report. B. An adventurous fantasy.
C. A travel journal. D. An assessment of an invention. C
An antibacterial drug obtained from the liquid of an Australian tree has shown promise for treating chronic (慢性的) wounds in animal tests.
Chronic wounds are common in people with diabetes(糖尿病), because poor circulation and
other symptoms slow down healing. Such wounds are painful and have a high risk of infection.
Doctors increasingly want to control the use of antibiotics (抗生素) in order to minimize the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. To look for alternatives, David Thomas at Cardiff University in the UK and his colleagues investigated chemicals obtained from the liquid of the blushwood tree, which grows in Australia.
They tested age l containing a promising chemical called EBC-1013 in two animals: mice used to model diabetes, with chronic wounds, and milk cows. All milk cows have their horns taken off, so the researchers applied the treatment to this wound.
In the cows treated with EBC-1013,75 percent of the wounds were recovered after 28 days, compared with just 25 percent of untreated wounds. In the mice, complete wound recovery was observed in five of the seven animals studied, whereas none of the seven wounds was recovered in the control group.
Bacteria in chronic wounds are more likely to form a sticky material called a biofilm. They are resistant to antibiotics, making such wounds difficult to treat. The new drug appears to disrupt the structure of biofilms and cause the production of cells and proteins that promote recovery.
“The next challenge will be to show that these preclinical findings translate into the clinic and that they can be developed into a safe and cost-effective treatment for chronic wounds,” says Matthew Hardman at the University of Hull, UK.
What's the purpose of the research on the tree liquid
To increase the use of antibiotics.
To find replacements for antibiotics.
To reduce the growth of the bacteria.
To strengthen the circulation of patients.
What does the underlined word “disrupt” in the sixth paragraph mean
A. Treat B. Destroy C. Improve D. Arrange.
What do we know about the findings
They cause safety concern.
They enjoy praise from doctors.
They remain to be further developed.
They have offered affordable treatment.
What does the passage mainly talk about
People with diabetes are sure to recover
Tree liquid attracts researchers' attention
Antibiotics lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria
Drug from the liquid could treat chronic wounds
D
So far, the use of underwater cameras has been limited. Some must be stuck to power wires. Others rely on batteries, which don’t tend to last long. Such limits have kept scientists from exploring most of the ocean world. But now researchers have found a way around these problems
— underwater cameras can get a new power source from sound.
The camera has two sensors on the bottom. Each is made of multiple layers of a piezoelectric material. When sound travels through the water, it creates waves of pressure, which cause the material to vibrate ( 振 动 ). And the material changes these vibrations into electrical energy and stores it in a capacitor. Once the capacitor has enough energy, it turns on the camera and takes a picture. Then, it lets the second sensor tap into more sound energy to send the picture. In this way, the sensors not only power the camera, but broadcast the data carrying its images.
Any sound can power it — from swimming fish to a passing ship. One of the sensors can focus on collecting energy for the camera while the other focuses on communication. How quickly the system takes to recharge depends on how loud and close the sound is. In a quiet setting, the camera will take about 10 to 12 seconds. With improved sensors, the camera will charge in less than a second by using sounds from more than 100 meters away.
To record an image the camera flashes a series of red, blue and green lights. The system then combines what it sees into a single color photo. To communicate, the camera has an internal switch, which controls whether a sensor uses incoming sound for broadcasting. That switch is like a mirror being moved into and out of position. When that switch is in position, the system will use some sound to carry the photo’s digital data to a receiver. That receiver picks up the camera’s broadcast and assembles the data into an image. And then the undersea photo shoot is done.
Where is the electrical energy kept
A. In a sensor. B. In a capacitor. C. In a switch. D. In a receiver.
Which of the following determines the time to recharge the system
The quiet setting of a sound.
The flexibility of the sensors.
The quality and source of a sound.
The loudness and location of a sound.
What is mainly stressed in the last paragraph
How sensors communicate through images.
How different colors are combined.
How the undersea camera works.
How the new system uses sounds.
What is the best title for the text
Collecting Power from Various Creatures
Developing a New Camera through Sounds
Powering a New Camera with Ocean Sounds
Providing New Functions for a New Camera

Ahh... Fish, chips and mushy peas! There is nothing more British than fish and chips. Freshly cooked, boiling hot fish and chips, topped with salt and seasoned with vinegar, packed in newspaper and eaten out-of-doors on a cold and wintry day — it simply cannot be beaten!
36
Both Lancashire and London claim to be the first to invent this famous meal. Chips were a cheap, basic food of the industrial north while fried fish was introduced in London’s East End. 37 So was born our national dish of fish and chips!
38 Mr. Lees sold fish and chips from a wooden shelter in the market. Later he moved
the business to a permanent shop across the road. However in London, it is said that Joseph Malin, a Jewish immigrant, opened a fish and chip shop in Cleveland Way within the sound of Bow Bells in the 1860s.
Fish and chip shops were originally small family businesses, often run from the front room of the house and were commonplace by the late 19th century. Through the latter part of the 19th century and well into the 20th century, the fish and chip trade expanded greatly to satisfy the needs of the growing industrial population of Great Britain. Fish and chips became vital to the diet of the ordinary
people. 39
In 1999, the British consumed nearly 300 million servings of fish and chips. That equates to
six servings for every man, woman and child in the country. 40 That’s eight for every one
Burger King restaurant, making British Fish and Chips the nation’s favorite take-away.
It quickly became a favorite of the workers.
People soon decided to put fried fish and chips together.
John Lees owned a restaurant and sold the famous pairing.
So how, when and where did this British dish come about
There are now around 8,500 fish and chip shops across the UK.
Some shops had to employ doormen to control the queue at busy times.
The first fish and chip shop in Lancashire is thought to have opened in 1863.

My dad and I had been looking forward to the State cross-country race of my senior year of high school, which would be the climax(顶点) of my existence.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run.
I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd—telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal —too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from church and school flickered across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement etched across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching sun beat upon my back, blinding me with its brilliance. Nothing was going to stop me, though.
