The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true.
Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.

A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.
B. The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world population does.
C. The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth.

I recently ran into a friend I hadn’t seen for a long while. Our conversation was lively and full of news from both sides. Before we parted she said,“You’ll have to drop in sometime.” I immediately sensed that if I simply “dropped in” I would take my friend by surprise, and I would be discouraged by the image of her standing in her doorway, staring at me,and asking,“Oh,er...what brings you here?”
Whatever happened to the unannounced drop in visit? When I was growing up in the 1960s,it seemed that people—mostly relatives, but also friends—were always popping_in.My parents would put coffee on,and my mom would find something in the kitchen to serve along with it.Then the conversation would begin...The neighbor lady,a worrier, was unloading her sadness while my mom quietly listened. The Irish man next door had such an accent that I remember asking what language he spoke. My Polish relatives arrived in packs...But I never heard my parents say anything like “We weren’t expecting you” or “This isn’t a good time.” Drop in visitors had a certain right of way and became No.1.
What happened to such visits?Actually I know the answer.Times have changed.Everybody gets busy with work. There is no longer a stay at home mom keeping a pot of hot coffee or tea ready throughout the day for a surprise guest.Exploding malls and stores are now replacing homes as a central form of entertainment.
Just the other day a former student of mine showed up.“I’m sorry for the surprise visit,” my student began.“I just wanted to see if you still lived here.I’ll only stay a minute.”
My response was immediate.“No,you won’t,” I said.“Just come in,sit,have coffee,and we’ll talk.”
I had nothing in the kitchen but we ordered pizza. And we had a lovely time.I have tried to keep the drop in tradition alive though it takes some effort.
31.The author thought his friend’s invitation—“You’ll have to drop in sometime”—as________.
A.a nice way of refusal B.an excuse of leaving C.a kind of politeness D.an expression of surprise
32.The underlined phrase “pop in” in the second paragraph means________.
A.make many friends B.make a special date C.have a good time D.pay a sudden visit
33.The woman from the neighborhood used to visit the author’s home to________.
A.seek comfort from my parents B.meet new friends C.listen to my parents’ story D.taste nice dishes
34.From the third paragraph of the passage,we can infer that________.
A.the author misses the lost good days B.unexpected visitors are still welcome now
C.modern people prefer outdoor activities D.there are more jobs for the housewives now
35.The author writes the passage intending to________.
A.encourage people to be drop in visitors B.explain how to deal with unexpected visitors

D
The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day.A few days ago,my car was not running well.I pulled it into a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine.I was a mazed. The sad truth is that great talent is not enough.
I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn.I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year.A business consultant who specializes in the medical, trade told me how many doctors and dentists struggled financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase,“They are one skill away from great wealth.”
There is an old saying that goes,“Job means ‘just over broke (破产)’.” And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people.Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, and most workers “live_within_their_means”.They work and they pay the bills.Instead I recommend young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.
When I ask the class I teach,“How many of you can cook a better hamhurger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious:McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on making a better hamburger but know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at making a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.
36.The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that________.
A.he is just one of the talented people B.he is ready to help others
C.he has a sharp sense of hearing D.he knows little about car repairing
37.The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by “________”.
A.spend more than they can afford B.do in their own way
C.live in their own circle D.live within what they earn
38.Why do talented people earn so little according to the author
A.They don’t work hard enough. B.They lack financial intelligence.
C.They don’t make full use of their talents. D.They have no specialized skills.
39.The success of McDonald’s lies in its________.
A.skills at making hamburgers B.good business systems
C.talented workers D.excellent service
40.The main purpose of the author is to tell us________.
A.how young people can find a satisfactory job B.what schools should teach students
C.why so many talented people are poor D.how McDonald’s makes much money

I know just how you feel
Do you feel sad Happy Angry You may think that the way you show these emotions is unique.Well, think again.Even the expression of the most personal feelings can be classified, according to Mind Reading, a DVD exhibiting every possible human emotion. 41
In the mid 1800s, Darwin divided the emotions into six types—anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise and enjoyment.More complex expressions of emotion were probablylearned and therefore more specific to each culture. But now it is believed that many morefacial expressions are shared worldwide. 42 The Mind Reading DVD is a systematicvisual record of these expressions.
The project was designed by a Cambridge professor. His research team first had todefine an "emotion". 43 Using this definition, 412 emotion terms were identified anddiscussed, from "afraid" to "wanting".
Then each expression is acted out by six different actors."It was really clear when the actorshad got it right," says Cathy Collis, who directed the DVD."Although they were given somedirection, the actors were not told which facial muscles they should move.44 "
Someone who has tried to set such rules is the American, Professor Paul Ekman, whobuilt database of how the face moves for every emotion. The face can make 43 distinct musclemovements.Ekman has also found that it may not be possible for people to reproduce themartificially. The most difficult expression to reproduce is the smile. It isn't only aboutstretching the lips, but tightening the tiny muscles around the eyes. 45 If we learnt torecognize whether someone was using their eye muscle when they smiled, we would be ableto distinguish true enjoyment from false.
A.It shows 412 distinct ways we feel.
B.These can be combined into more than 10,000 facial shapes.
C.These particular muscles are difficult to control, and few people can do it.
D.They decided that it was a mental state that could be introduced by "I feel" or "he looks "
or "she sounds".
E.He said the expression of these feelings was universal and recognizable by anyone, from
any culture.
F.It is as if they are programmed into the brains of "normal humans" wherever they are and
whatever their races.
G.We thought of trying to describe each emotion, but it would have been almost impossible
to make clear rules for this.

How to Protect the Endangered Animals
Today many animals are endangered in the world. It’s time for us human beings to do something to save them.
Firstly, we should make laws to protect endangered animals. Get tough with those who kill animals in danger to get large profit and punish them seriously. Only in this way can fewer endangered animals lose their lives.
Secondly, we should create more nature reserves for animals to live in. Sending animals to the zoo is not the best choice, but it’s better than they are killed. Besides, we can’t destroy their habitats which they have adapted to. It is when they live in the reserve and their habitats that their population will increase.
Lastly, we must regard animals as our close friends and share the world with them.
