Shinrin-yoku means “forest bathing”. Forest bathing doesn't mean you take a bath in the forest; rather, you simply go for a walk in the woods or a city park, where youslackenby using all your senses to experience nature.
Yoshifumi Miyazaki, from Chiba University, is among a growing number of scientists who have begun studying the science behind the effects of nature on human health. In his bookShinrin-yoku: The Japanese Art of Forest Bathing.Miyazaki explains the techniques of forest bathing.
Miyazaki has an interesting theory about why shinrin-yoku is so effective. He points out that for more than 99.99% of the time, humans have lived in a natural environment. In fact, in 1800, only 3% of the world's population lived in cities, and by 2016, this figure reached 54%. This is only going to get worse; officials predict that by 2050, 66% will live in cities.
This suggests we live in our modern society with bodies that are still used to the natural environment, he writes in the book, because “genes cannot change over just a few hundred years". The science behind the research studies he presents in the book makes a convincing case that forest bathing is an effective method for reducing stress in today's world.
Now city planners are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of nature and are creating new kinds of “parks” out of empty spaces. There're also more city gardens where people can grow vegetables. For kids, kitchen gardens in schools are becoming popular. As Miyazaki stresses, you don't have to find a formal park or garden to practice shinrin-yoku. Instead, you can enjoy the effects of nature wherever there're plants.
Better yet, he says, we can bring nature closer to where we spend most of our time. Miyazaki's research has shown that just increasing the amount of plants in a room can affect the relaxation benefits of the room. What's more, even when people simply look at flowers, their bodies relax and stress levels decrease.
4. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Behave. B. Entertain. C. Sleep. D. Relax.
5. How does the author mainly develop the third paragraph
A. By giving examples. B. By listing figures.
C. By making remarks. D. By presenting research findings.
6. Why does forest bathing work effectively according to Miyazaki
A. Human genes can change easily. B. Nature is part of the modern society.
C. Human body can integrate into nature. D. People can always get excited in nature.
7. Which of the following will Miyazaki agree on forest bathing
A. It is easy to operate. B. It is meant for gardeners.
C. It is unaffordable in the city. D. It is inconvenient to practice.

Thanks to YouTube, Streaming first caught on in 2005. Today nearly three quarters of American households subscribe to at least one video streaming service. With almost 200 million subscribers worldwide and a billion hours of content viewed each week, Netflix is by far the biggest paid service. No. 2 is Amazon Prime Video. But for every Goliath, there are a hundred Davids. Many smaller streaming services show nothing but sports, classic movies, or Japanese anime.
In the early days of streaming the appeal was the lower cost, and it still is. The average streamer spends $37 a month and subscribes to three streaming platforms, while the average cable ser pays more than $200 per month. Still streaming has become more expensive in recent years. In 2019, Netflix raised the price of its basic service 12. 5 percent to $8.99 a month. A quarter of its subscribers, who protested price increases, said they would cancel their subscriptions. Few did.
A major reason: streaming networks have become home to many of the most popular TV series, including recent Emmy winners. They offer full-length feature films as well, and last year, Netflix received more Oscar nominations than any other media company. In fact, streaming has changed the Oscar competition, at least for this year. Usually only films shown in theaters are considered, but because of the coronavirus, all movies released online in 2020 are qualified for the 2021 Oscar Academy Awards. That shift is especially good news for Disney, which is putting the much anticipated movie Mulan on a new streaming service, Amazon Prime Video. But watching Mulan from your own home will cost $29.99 — on top of the service’s monthly fee of $6.99.
Too much streaming can have its disadvantages, however. There are those who binge-watch, a term Merriam-Webster added in 2017 with the definition “to watch many or all episodes of a TV series on end.” Alejandro Fragoso from New York holds the Guinness World Record: 94 straight hours.
8. What do the underlined words “Goliath” and “David” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. TV viewers. B. TV programs.
C. Streaming services. D. Streaming subscribers.
9. Why did most Netflix subscribers continue their subscriptions
A. They cannot go without it. B. They think it is good value for money.
C. Netflix has controlled the market. D. They think the low cost is a thing of the past.
10. What does the good news in Paragraph 3 mean to Disney
A. The movie Mulan will win an Oscar award.
B. The movie Mulan will generate great profits.
C. The movie Mulan can be released on Amazon Prime Video.
D. The movie Mulan can compete for an Oscar.
11. What do binge-watchers tend to do
A. They watch TV series continuously. B. They start a new life.
C. They break world records. D. They watch TV series aimlessly
D
I have learned something about myself since I moved from Long Island to Florida three years ago. Even though I own a home in Port St. Lucie just minutes from the ocean, every winter an uncontrollable urge(冲动) wells up to fly back to Long Island even as others make their way south. I guess I am a snowbird stuck in reverse(反向).
Dulled by Florida's mild winters, I willingly suffer the cold weather on Long Island, the place I called home for 65 years. I'm like a bird that has lost its sense of timing and direction, my wings moving against routine.
So what makes me fly against the habits of snowbirds The answer has a lot to do with my unwillingness to give up the things that define(给...下定义) who I am. Once I hear that the temperature on Long Island has fallen into the range of 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, I begin to long for the sight and sound of a wood fire. I also long for the display of colours—first in the fall trees, and then in the lights around homes and at Rockefeller Center. Floridians decorate, too, but can't create the special feel of a New England winter. Moreover, when I return I can celebrate the holidays with people I haven't seen in months. What could be better than sitting with family and friends for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, or watching neighbours' children excitedly open gifts on Christmas Even the first snowfall seems special.
While these simple pleasures are not unique to Long Island they are some of the reasons I comeback. Who says you can't go home I know I will be ordering a ticket this very night and cured of homesick(思乡病) tomorrow.
12. What does the author think of his life in Florida
A. Exciting. B. Relaxing. C. Painful. D. Boring.
13. Why does the author compare himself to a snowbird stuck in reverse
A. He has lost his sense of direction.
B. He'd rather go north in winter.
C. He hates travelling by plane.
D. He likes snow very much.
14. The author uses Paragraph 3 to .
A. describe his hometown's fall scenes.
B. show how he loves family gatherings.
C. explain why he wants to return to his hometown.
D. compare the difference between Florida and Long Island.
15. What is the author going to do tonight
A. Book a flight. B. Go to the doctor's. C. Eat with his family. D. Check into a hotel.

As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm in Missouri last May, Brandon finished feeding his cows and decided to go home. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 7, and Everett, 5, followed closely.
As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate. Louie paused at a board covering an old well. The board had, over time, become easily broken. When Louie stepped on it, it caved in and he fell into the well. Brandon had just close the door when he heard a cry for help. He turned around and found his younger son Everett standing alone beside the well, pointing to it and screaming.
Brandon quickly realized what had happened. “No, Louie can barely swim,” he panicked, his mind almost going blank. However, he knew he should calm down. He ran to the well and heard Louie hitting the water. Without thinking, he jumped in. Somehow, Brandon managed to grab on to a pipe that ran down the side of the well. He hit the cold water at the bottom of the well and lifted Louie up as he stuck his own legs and back against the narrow walls for support. “All right, Dad, we can climb out now,” Louie said.
If only it were that easy!
The pipe that he’d grabbed during his fall was too slippery to be of any use. There was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett looking down at them, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops. Tell them we need help. And Everett, stay off the road.”

【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述日本科学家Miyazaki有关“森林浴”的研究及其和人类健康的关系。
【4题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段划线词所在句“Forest bathing doesn't mean you take a bath in the forest; rather, you simply go for a walk in the woods or a city park, where you slacken by using all your senses to experience nature.(“森林浴”并不是指你在森林里洗澡;相反,你只是在树林里或城市公园里散步,在那里你会放松下来,用你所有的感官去体验自然)”中的“using all your senses to experience nature”可知,感受森林浴的过程是用所有的感官去体验自然,可以推断这是一个放松的过程,所以划线词slacken应该是“放松”的意思,D选项relax和它词义接近。故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“He points out that for more than 99.99% of the time, humans have lived in a natural environment. In fact, in 1800, only 3% of the world's population lived in cities, and by 2016, this figure reached 54%. This is only going to get worse; officials predict that by 2050, 66% will live in cities.(他指出,在99.99%以上的时间里,人类都生活在自然环境中。事实上,在1800年,只有3%的世界人口居住在城市,到2016年,这个数字达到54%。这只会变得更糟;官员们预测,到2050年,66%的人口将居住在城市)”可知,该段主要是以列数字的方式展开讲述Miyazaki提出的理论。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Miyazaki has an interesting theory about why shinrin-yoku is so effective. He points out that for more than 99.99% of the time, humans have lived in a natural environment.(Miyazaki有一个有趣的理论来解释为什么shinlin -yoku如此有效。他指出,在99.99%以上的时间里,人类都生活在自然环境中)”可知,宫崎骏认为人类和自然是一体的,不可分割的,所以“森林浴”对人们放松身心是有效的。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“As Miyazaki stresses, you don't have to find a formal park or garden to practice shinrin-yoku. Instead, you can enjoy the effects of nature wherever there're plants.(正如Miyazaki强调的那样,你不必找一个正式的公园或花园来练习“森林浴”。相反,你可以在任何有植物的地方享受大自然的效果)”可知,Miyazaki认为人们可以在任何有植物的地方享受“森林浴”,所以要进行“森林浴”是很容易的。故选A项。

Few did.
A major reason: streaming networks have become home to many of the most popular TV series including recent Emmy winners.
Too much streaming can have its disadvantages however.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

While these simple pleasures are not unique to Long Island, they are some of the reasons I comeback.

【答案】范文
Everett did as he was told. About 15minutes later, Dan and Christi, nearby farmers, were driving by when they noticed Everett alone by the side of the road, waving. They pulled over and asked if he was OK. “My daddy’s in a hole” he told them. Hearing this, they piled Everett into their pickup and then drove to the well.
The couple hurried to the well with Everett. “Brandon” Dan shouted, “It’s Dan. We’re going to send a rope down to you.” After several minutes they pulled Louie out of the well. The couple now turned their attention to Brandon, but he was too heavy to pull out of the well using just the rope. After a brief discussion, they decided to use the old windmill that still stood over the well. Forty-some minutes after he’d jumped into the well to save his son, Brandon emerged, cold and wet. “You are our life saver.” Brandon thanked Dan, who turned to Everett. Dan said. “Everett is actually your life saver. Without him, I wouldn’t have known the accident, let alone the rescue!” Words couldn’t express his surprise when the father turned to the 3-year-old boy. Finally they thanked Dan again together.
