Jane Goodall is walking in Tanzania, searching carefully for chimpanzees (黑猩猩). Her love for chimps began when she was just a baby. Her father had bought her a toy when she was a year old, and Jubilee—as her chimp was called, became her constant companion.
Jane Goodall was fascinated with animals and she dreamed of becoming a naturalist in Africa. But with not enough money to even attend college, she found herself working as a waitress to pay her bills.
One day in 1956, a letter arrived from a childhood friend in Kenya, inviting her for a visit. The young Jane Goodall finally bought a ticket to Mombasa.
When 26-year-old Jane Goodall set foot in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream Reserve, not much was known about chimps. Jane did not even have an undergraduate degree, but what she did have was a deep love for the forest, patience and a thirst for learning.
Jane’s findings changed humans’ opinion of chimpanzees in many ways. One of her primary discoveries that have since been observed in other species was the presence of emotion in animals. She also discovered that different from previous belief, chimps are not vegetarians. While their diet is mostly made up of fruits, nuts, and seeds, she observed them hunting and eating the meat of small monkeys.
When Jane published her first book, In the Shadow of Man, she received a lot of criticism (批判). There were complaints that she had named her chimps rather than giving them fixed numbers. She was told that she could not assume that chimps had personalities or emotions. She was also criticized for using feeding stations to attract chimps for observation.
However, on the whole, the contributions that Jane has made to science, not only as a researcher but as a conservationist, are invaluable. She challenged ideas nobody had ever thought to question and her work continues to shape research today.
4. What do we know about Jane
A. She was born in Kenya. B. She majored in animal science at college.
C. She loved chimps from a very young age. D. She learned about animals from her father.
5. What did Jane find through her observations
A. Animals have their own languages. B. Animals have emotions.
C. Chimps only eat plants. D. Chimps can use tools.
6. What might be the author’s attitude to Jane
A. Opposed. B. Concerned. C. Doubtful. D. Appreciative.
7. What would be the best title for the text
A. Jane: A champion of chimps! B. What separates us from chimps
C. How to make friends with chimps. D. Jane still fights for endangered chimps.

Todmorden is an ordinary town in England. In less than two years, it has changed the way it produces its food and the way its residents think about the pared with 18 months ago, a third more townspeople now grow their own vegetables, almost 7 in 10 now buy local produce regularly, and 15 times as many people are keeping chickens. “Our aim is to make our town completely self-sufficient in food production,” said Pam Warburst, who planned the project, Incredible Edible.
The change started 18 months ago. Nick Green, who runs a company that provides workspace for local artists took on the job of doing the planting. He chose the first land in the middle of the town and it attracted plenty of attention. “We wanted everyone to see what we were doing, so they could ask questions and finally join in.” he said.
Incredible Edible was originally funded out of the participants’ (参与者) own pockets. “We were very clear that we didn’t want to look at what grants (拨款) were available and change our projects to suit them,” said Mr. Green. “We felt that what would work was to start with the town and what it needed. We’d look for money later on.” What the project leaders found was that a lot could be achieved with small amounts of cash. And awards and grants have followed.
“The important thing about Incredible Edible is that it involves (影响) everyone in the town and it’s a grass-roots project. I honestly believe it’s a good plan for every neighborhood. What we’re doing here could easily be rolled out anywhere. It’s all about involving people, giving them ownership, letting them realize it can be fun and interesting and that the food is delicious, and giving them space to set up their own ideas and run with them.”
8. Which of the following can best describe Todmorden
A. It has an artistic atmosphere. B. It is leading a green lifestyle.
C. It produces everything it needs. D. It is famous for its beautiful scenery.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Doing the planting. B. Choosing the land.
C. Nick Green’s company. D. The workspace for artists.
10. How did Incredible Edible get financial support in the beginning
A. By raising money from the locals. B. By winning an award from a competition.
C By collecting money from the participants. D. By applying for a grant from the government.
11. Why is Incredible Edible so important
A. It helps the residents get rich. B. It provides enough food for the locals.
C. It has been achieved by ordinary people. D. It has a strong effect on reducing pollution.
D
To create is human. For the past 300,000 years, we’ve been unique in our ability to make art, cuisine, and societies to imagine and create something new where there was nothing before. Now we have company. While you’re reading this sentence, generative artificial intelligence programs are responding to emails, preparing tax returns, and providing health advice.
Artificial intelligence has already had a wide impact on our lives. AIs have been used to price medicine and houses, assemble (组装) cars, determine what ads we see on social media. But generative AI, which can create wholly novel content, is much newer.
Supporters believe this is just the beginning, that generative AI will change the way we work and engage with the world, unlock creativity and scientific discoveries, and allow human beings to achieve previously unimaginable goals.
This shift marks the most important technological breakthrough since social media. Generative AI tools have been adopted greedily in recent months by the public, thanks to programs like ChatGPT, which responds to virtually any question, and Dall-E, which allows you to produce any image you dream up. In January, ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users.
This craze caught off guard many tech companies and has stimulated an intense race in Silicon Valley. In weeks, Microsoft and Google have shifted their entire corporate strategies to seize control of what they believe profitable. Microsoft is investing $10 billion in Open AI, creator of ChatGPT and Dall-E, and announced plans to integrate generative AI into its Office software and search engine. Google declared a “code red” corporate emergency in response to the success of ChatGPT and rushed its own search-oriented chatbot to market.
But this gold rush could also prove disastrous. In a winner-takes-all battle for power, these companies risk repeating past mistakes, such as prioritizing growth over safety. While there are many potentially good aspects of these new technologies, even tools designed for good can have unforeseen I and ruinous consequences. This is the story of how the gold rush began—and what history tells us about what could happen next.
12. Which of the following is the particular function of generative AI
A. Price goods. B. Build vehicles.
C. Decide ads on social media. D. Offer health suggestions.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The functions of generative AI. B. The programs of generative AI.
C. People’s interest in generative AI. D. Companies’ investment in generative AI.
14. What does Microsoft plan to do
A. Shift its focus to Office software.
B. Invest in another generative AI start-up.
C. Integrate its search engine into Office software.
D. Combine generative AI with its existing products.
15. Why does the author mention the gold rush in the last paragraph
A. To emphasise the importance of history.
B. To advocate the use of new technologies.
C. To put off the development of generative AI.
D. To warn of the potential danger of generative AI.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Do you prefer to write with your left hand If you do, you are one of the millions of “lefties” in the world. To understand left-handedness, it is necessary to look at the brain. ___16___ In most right-handers, the right hemisphere (半球) controls how they understand broad, general ideas and how they respond to the five senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. The left hemisphere is the center of language and logical thinking. ___17___
The left hemisphere of the brain controls the right side of the body, and the right hemisphere controls the left side. Both sides of the body receive the same information from the brain because both hemispheres are connected. ___18___ In left-handed people, it is the right hemisphere that is stronger.
Different handedness causes differences in people. Although the left hemisphere controls language in right-handers, 40% of left-handers have the language center in the right hemisphere. The other 60% use the left side of the brain or both sides for language. ___19___ They are also more likely than right-handers to enjoy swimming underwater because left-handers can adjust more easily to seeing underwater.
Are you left-handed even though you write with your right hand ___20___ Draw a circle first with one hand and then with the other. If you draw the circles clockwise (the direction the hands of a clock go in), you are probably left-handed. If you draw them counterclockwise (in the other direction), you are right-handed. The test does not always work, and some people draw one circle in one direction and the other circle in the other direction. But don’t worry if you are left-handed. You are in good companion.
A. Take this test to find out.
B. The brain is divided into two hemispheres.
C. Left-handers are more likely to have good imaginations.
D. However, in right-handed people, left hemisphere is stronger.
E. Left-handers prefer not only the left hand but also the left foot.
F. This is where they do their math problems and memorize vocabulary.
G. Most right-handers do mathematics with the left hemisphere of the brain.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears, with a fawn-colored coat. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it. The dog was barely twelve weeks old. It had no collar or identifying marks of any sort, so I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an advertisement in the local paper’s lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone showed up. To convince myself, I thought its owners should come looking for it if they really loved it.
By the end of the week, the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. Despite the excuses I had come up with, I found myself checking the lost-and-found in the local paper. One day the following week, a particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart pounded (怦怦跳) with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded desperate (绝望). My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put the paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.
By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did housework, it was there to lend a hand.
There was only one problem with this otherwise perfect picture: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It would be the most difficult thing I’d ever done.
注意:1.续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the phone.

Paragraph 2:
I asked the woman to come in and she quickly bent over and hugged Molly tightly.

A. Doing the planting. B. Choosing the land.
C. Nick Green’s company. D. The workspace for artists.
10. How did Incredible Edible get financial support in the beginning
A. By raising money from the locals. B. By winning an award from a competition.
C. By collecting money from the participants. D. By applying for a grant from the government.
11. Why is Incredible Edible so important
A. It helps the residents get rich. B. It provides enough food for the locals.
C. It has been achieved by ordinary people. D. It has a strong effect on reducing pollution.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. C

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. D

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
【答案】16. B 17. F 18. D 19. C 20. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。讲述了左撇子和右撇子不同。
【16题详解】
根据前文“To understand left-handedness, it is necessary to look at the brain.(要了解左撇子,有必要研究一下大脑)”以及后文“In most right-handers, the right hemisphere (半球) controls how they understand broad, general ideas and how they respond to the five senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. The left hemisphere is the center of language and logical thinking.(在大多数右撇子中,右脑控制着他们如何理解广泛的、一般的想法,以及他们如何对五种感官——视觉、听觉、嗅觉、味觉和触觉做出反应。左半球是语言和逻辑思维的中心)”可知,把大脑分成了两部分去研究,所以B项“The brain is divided into two hemispheres.(大脑分为两个半球)”符合文意,承接上文,并总领下文。故选B项。
【17题详解】
根据前文“The left hemisphere is the center of language and logical thinking.(左半球是语言和逻辑思维的中心)”可知,F项“This is where they do their math problems and memorize vocabulary.(这是他们做数学题和记忆词汇的地方)”是对前句的总结,符合文意。故选F项。
【18题详解】
根据前文“Both sides of the body receive the same information from the brain because both hemispheres are connected.(身体的两侧从大脑接收到相同的信息,因为两个半球是相连的)”以及后文“In left-handed people, it is the right hemisphere that is stronger.(左撇子的右半球更强)”可知,D项“However, in right-handed people, left hemisphere is stronger.(然而,右撇子的左脑半球更强)”和前文构成转折关系,且结构和后文相同,符合文意。故选D项。
【19题详解】
根据前文“Different handedness causes differences in people. Although the left hemisphere controls language in right-handers, 40% of left-handers have the language center in the right hemisphere. The other 60% use the left side of the brain or both sides for language.(不同的惯用手导致人与人之间的差异。虽然右撇子的左脑半球控制语言,但40%的左撇子的语言中枢位于右脑半球。另外60%的人使用左脑或左右脑来处理语言)”以及后文“They are also more likely than right-handers to enjoy swimming underwater because left-handers can adjust more easily to seeing underwater.(他们也比右撇子更喜欢在水下游泳,因为左撇子更容易适应水下)”可知,本段主要讲述了不同的惯用手导致人与人之间的差异,以及左撇子的优点,所以C项“Left-handers are more likely to have good imaginations.(左撇子更有可能拥有丰富的想象力)”符合文意,讲述了左撇子的优点,且句子结构和后句相同。故选C项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Are you left-handed even though you write with your right hand (即使你用右手写字,你也是左撇子吗 )”以及后文“If you draw the circles clockwise (the direction the hands of a clock go in), you are probably left-handed. If you draw them counterclockwise (in the other direction), you are right-handed. The test does not always work, and some people draw one circle in one direction and the other circle in the other direction.(先用一只手画一个圆圈,然后用另一只手。如果你顺时针画圆圈(时钟指针的方向),你可能是左撇子。如果你逆时针(在另一个方向)画它们,你是右撇子。这个测试并不总是有效,有些人在一个方向上画一个圆圈,在另一个方向上画一个圆圈)”可知,前句问怎么判断左撇子,后句介绍了一种测试方法,所以A项“Take this test to find out.(做这个测试来找出答案吧)”符合文意,其中test为同词复现。故选A项。

第二节(满分25分)
注意:1.续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the phone.

Paragraph 2:
I asked the woman to come in and she quickly bent over and hugged Molly tightly.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the phone. Secretly I was praying no one would answer, but a woman did. As I described the dog to her in detail, her voice shook with excitement and she wanted to come right over. Within minutes I heard a vehicle pull up at the driveway and some footsteps stop at the door. Head cradled in my hands and heart hammering, a thousand thoughts crossed my mind: I could pretend I wasn’t home or tell her, “I’m sorry, you have the wrong address.” But it was too late: the bell rang and Molly was barking. Opening the door, I saw a woman with a little girl sitting in a small wheelchair.
I asked the woman to come in and she quickly bent over and hugged Molly tightly. One look at Molly, and the little girl’s face lit up. “Here, Lucy,” she yelled. “Come here!” Molly instantly obeyed, wagging her tail wildly. My heart sank. Seemingly sensing my feelings, the woman explained that Lucy was more than just a puppy to her daughter, who was left crippled for life in an accident. “Lucy gave her a reason to live,” she choked. Suddenly I felt relieved. God has blessed me with so much, I thought. As they pulled out of the driveway, I smiled, knowing I had done the right thing—that puppy was exactly where she belonged.
