Popular English digital dictionaries
U-Dictionary
This app provides three different explainers: “Basic”, “Advanced”, and “Mastery”. Beginners can look up translations of a word in their mother tongue, while more advanced speakers can learn different ways to speak English like a native. The app also has a fast and accurate word scanner (扫描仪). Scan a word with your phone’s camera and the definition will pop up. The app also contains word quizzes, and listening and writing exercises to help you master English.
Dictionary
The app has plenty of functions, including a dictionary, a thesaurus(类义词典), a “Learners” function, and an “Origins” page. The “Learners” function is very useful for students of the language, as it provides information on how the meaning of a word can change in different contexts, or with other words. The app also provides word quizzes, articles about how language is used, and a “Word of the Day” section on the app’s homepage.
Oxford English Dictionary
The best feature of this app is that it allows you to look up definitions of words even as you’ re reading things in other apps on your device. The benefit of this app over others is that you can sort your saved words into folders or categories. Unfortunately, one of the major shortcomings is that there is no thesaurus or offline dictionary.
Merriam-Webster
Unlike other apps that require you to download a bunch of packages before you can access them offline, this dictionary works with or without data on your device. There is also an option to shift between dictionary and thesaurus mode. Sadly, because this app has so much to offer, the drawback is a few advertisements, which pop up once in a while.
1. What can both U-Dictionary and Dictionary provide
A. Word quizzes. B. A word scanner.
C. An “Origins” page. D. A “Word of the Day” section.
2. Which app enables users to sort their saved words into folders
A. U-Dictionary. B. Merriam-Webster.
C. Dictionary. D. Oxford English Dictionary.
3. What makes Merriam-Webster less attractive
A. No offline service. B. No thesaurus mode.
C. Occasional advertisements. D. Many packages to download.
【答案】1. A 2. D 3. C

B
A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. An instructor read out numbers-7447,7089,9842, and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.
The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (算盘). For much of that evening, Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work through the problem.
From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skills on the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads (珠子), so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who harbored some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear of math. My usual solution was avoidance, and if I had to figure out something like percentage change, I would go online.
Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I hadn’t become Euclid. But the practice brought my fear of math down a level. This is a long-proved power of the abacus. Confidence grows easily on the device, and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and outcomes appear to move in step, with hard work related highly to performance.
My kids had gained some math confidence as well. My youngest daughter would beam broadly after getting a math problem correct, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show to her classmates and teacher. These were small successes. But that’s how they ultimately develop confidence.
4. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A. To prove the difficulty of math. B. To introduce the topic of the abacus.
C. To show the intelligence of Stevenson. D. To recommend teaching abacus in schools.
5. What can we infer about the author from paragraph 3
A. He was not good at math. B. He had no interest in the abacus.
C. He regarded math as really useful. D. He learned mental abacus from Stevenson.
6. What does the author realize from his learning experience
A. The old methods hardly work today. B. The simplest way is the best way.
C. It pays to put theory into practice. D. Practice makes perfect.
7. What does the underlined word “beam” in the last paragraph mean
A. Smile. B. Reflect. C. Explore. D. Agree.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. A

【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.(对于每一个问题,她都闭上眼睛,然后她右手的手指开始移动。她正确地回答了大部分问题)”以及第二段“The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus.(她成功的关键是一种叫做算盘的古老技术)”可推知,第一段的主要目的是引出“算盘”这个主题。故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“I was one of the many who harbored some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear of math. My usual solution was avoidance, and if I had to figure out something like percentage change, I would go online.(我是许多对数学有怀疑的人之一,我对数学感到一丝恐惧。我通常的解决方法是回避,如果我必须计算出诸如百分比变化之类的东西,我会上网)”可推知,作者的不擅长数学。故选A。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I hadn’t become Euclid. But the practice brought my fear of math down a level. This is a long-proved power of the abacus.(在上了几堂算盘课和大量的练习之后,数学似乎不那么可怕了。我没有成为欧几里得。但是练习让我对数学的恐惧降低了一个水平。这是算盘久经证实的威力)”可推知,作者从自己的学习经历中意识到“熟能生巧”这个道理。故选D。
【7题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前文“My kids had gained some math confidence as well.(我的孩子们在数学上也有了一些自信)”及后文“after getting a math problem correct(在做对一道数学题之后)”可推知,作者最小的女儿在做对数学题后获得了自信,很高兴,不由自主微笑,beam意思与smile相近。故选A项。
C
Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
8. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2
A. Your weight changes little during a day.
B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
9. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months
A. You will weigh more.
B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
C. Your body fat will increase.
D. Your body composition will change.
10. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body
A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds.
C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Why Do We Gain Weight
B. How to Work Out Effectively
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body
D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain
【答案】8 B 9. D 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章解释了在坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食的同时,体重不降反增的原因。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段第一句““A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says.(他说:“一个人的体表质量是肌肉、脂肪、骨头、血液,甚至是我们肺中携带的空气的组合。”)”可知,体重是肌肉、脂肪、骨骼、血液甚至肺里空气的质量总和。由此可推知,体重受多种因素影响。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease.(当你开始通过锻炼来改变你的身体组成——通过增加更多的肌肉量和减少体脂——你的体重可能会增加,而体脂率可能会降低。)”可推知,在坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后,最有可能发生的是你的身体组成会发生变化。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight(水大约占一个人体重的65%到90%)”可知,人体的含水量约占人体体重的65%到90%。由此可知,体重150磅的人体内含水量应在(150×65%=97.5)磅至(150×90%=135)磅之间。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.(你是否一直在锻炼,饮食也很健康,但当你站在秤上时,秤上显示你胖了几磅?“这很正常,这并不意味着你的锻炼没有效果,”佛罗里达州迈阿密海滩的运动生理学家Jeffrey A. Dolgan说。)”和第二段的“Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.(在例行锻炼后,身体各个部位的质量百分比会立即发生15%的变化。所以,如果你在锻炼和健康饮食的同时体重增加,这可能不是你想的那种类型的体重增加。)”可知,文章主要分析了坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后体重不降反增的原因。D项“Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain (为什么我锻炼后体重反而增加了?)”能概括文章主要内容,最适合作本文标题。故选D。
D
The findings of Nielsen Book Research’s annual survey show that only 32% of British children under 13 are read to daily by an adult, for pleasure, down four percentage points on the previous year.
Most parents stop reading to their child by the age of eight, with just 19% of eight to 10-year-olds read to daily by an adult, across all socio-economic groups, down 3% on last year. Boys were less likely to be read to daily than girls at 14%, compared with 24%.
Another survey carried out by the National Literacy Trust found that the number of 8-to-18-year-olds reading for pleasure has now dropped to 52.5%, from 58.8% in 2019, with only a quarter(25.7%)reading daily, compared with 43% in 2018. The majority of boys and girls in every age group said they preferred screen time to reading.
Publisher Egmont, which co-funded the Nielsen research, said that the decline in parents reading to children signals a significant threat to children’s well-being. It highlighted a strong relation between older children being read to, and children choosing to read independently for pleasure; 74%of 8-to-13-year-olds who were read to each day also read independently, compared with just 29%of those who were read to less than once a week.
Child expert Alison David stressed that a daily story time should be a part of the school day, as normal, unquestionable and as unchangeable as a lunch break. Ideally, she said, this should run into their teens. “The Department for Education states that nothing is more important than ensuring every child can read well, and the way to do this is to introduce a passion for reading for pleasure. This won’t be achieved by guided reading lessons and tests. Space must be made in the school day for story time,” said David. “Teachers are vastly overburdened by the curriculum (课程). Unless time is made for stories, it won’t happen for all children every day, which it needs to—for our children’s futures.”
“Whether your children are dressed up today or not, sit down with them for 10 minutes every day and share a story,” said Kirsten Grant, director of World Book Day. “We all know how important it is to our children’s health to give them their ‘five a day’. It’s just as important for their well-being to read with them for ten a day.”
12. What are the two surveys about
A. Children’s reading habits. B. Gender differences in book choices.
C. Children’s after-class activities. D. Parent-child relationships.
13. Where can you find the data supporting “children being read to are likely to read by themselves”
A. In paragraph 1. B. In paragraph 2. C. In paragraph 3. D. In paragraph 4.
14. What did David expect the government to do
A. Reduce the burden of school teachers.
B. Decrease the number of guided reading tests.
C. Lengthen the lunch break period for children.
D. Make space for reading in the school curriculum.
15. What is the purpose of Grant’s words in the last paragraph
A. To entertain. B. To advertise. C. To persuade. D. To defend.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. C

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Publisher Egmont, which co-funded the Nielsen research, said that the decline in parents reading to children signals a significant threat to children’s well-being. It highlighted a strong relation between older children being read to, and children choosing to read independently for pleasure; 74%of 8-to-13-year-olds who were read to each day also read independently, compared with just 29%of those who were read to less than once a week.(埃格蒙特出版商是尼尔森研究的共同资助方,该公司表示,父母给孩子读书的减少标志着对孩子健康的重大威胁。它强调了年龄较大的孩子被阅读和选择独立阅读的孩子之间的紧密联系;在8到13岁的孩子中,每天都有朗读的孩子中有74%的人也能独立阅读,而在每周朗读不到一次的孩子中,这一比例仅为29%)”可推知,第4段能找到支持“被父母阅读的孩子可能会自己阅读”的数据。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Space must be made in the school day for story time(在上学的日子里必须腾出时间讲故事)”可知,大卫希望政府在学校课程中为阅读留出空间。故选D。

Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage ” Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha ”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class ” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings(剪报)and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first-not sure of yourself at all, I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

Running her fingers across the ribbon, Niesha seemed to feel the courage and devoted herself to practicing. Finally, the important moment came. Just before Niesha were ready to do the presentation, shyness, nervousness and fear seized her, leaving her hands sweating and throat tightening. Lowering her head, Niesha fixed her eyes upon the blue ribbon on her wrist. Suddenly, courage seemed to have found its way back. With head held high, Niesha started her speech, loud and confident, knowing that she would make it!

Unlike other apps that require you to download a bunch of packages before you can access them offline, this dictionary works with or without data on your device. There is also an option to shift between dictionary and thesaurus mode. Sadly, because this app has so much to offer, the drawback is a few advertisements, which pop up once in a while.

A. Smile. B. Reflect. C. Explore. D. Agree.

D. To defend.

1. 续写词数应为100左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha stared at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought.
