When Nigeria’s first-ever female taekwondo (跆拳道) Olympian Princess Dudu was fighting on the Olympic mat sat Athens 2004, five-year-old Elizabeth Anyanacho was enjoying one of her favourite movies at her home in Abuja.
She knows that the Olympics are not a joke, and she dreams of being a role model to other women. At 16, Anyanacho wanted to try out a sport. She began training with the track and field team at a local stadium in Nigeria’s capital Abuja.
During one of her training courses, she was spotted by Chika Chukwumerije who was at the stadium to identify up-and-coming talent to train for taekwondo. “In 2015, I went to the stadium to find tall boys and girls. Her body structure fits the body of a taekwondo athlete. She had never done sport in her life,” said Chukwumerije, now the technical director at Nigerian Taekwondo. Chukwumerije, a three-time Olympian figured Anyanacho’s long legs would give her an edge over opponents (对手) when she is kicking from a distance.
“I was happy to give it a try,” said Anyanacho. “I was excited when I discovered taekwondo.” Anyanacho spent more time training and improving her skills. She was outstanding on the mat. In her first competition in 2017 held in neighbouring Ghana, she won gold. The national under-67kg champion has competed in 13 tournaments (联赛), winning eight of them and finishing twice in second and three times in third place. All these events formed part of the road that led her to Tokyo.
“Taekwondo has given me confidence, exposed me to different cultures and I have made friends from all over the world. I would not have had all these opportunities if it weren’t for taekwondo,” said Anyanacho. In addition to her Olympic goals, she hopes her rise can inspire more women.

On December 14, 1972, three NASA astronauts (宇航员) left the moon. Two had just completed their stay there for NASA’s Apollo 17 mission (任务). During that time, astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt walked across the lunar (月球的) surface. Meanwhile, astronaut Ronald Evans kept control of the command module. When the astronauts returned to Earth, they became the last humans to visit the moon.
Now, about 50 years later, astronauts are getting ready to go back. But this time will be different. On November 16, 2022, NASA launched (发射) its Artemis 1. The agency’s new Space Launch System rocket lifted off in Florida and began its first voyage toward the moon. No one was on board. But the mission tested new technologies that eventually will bring astronauts back to the moon, including the first woman.
Jose Hurtado, an expert at the University of Texas at El Paso, said, “It was a great launch. What I love is about space exploration, so it was really stirring.” He found it an inspirational view, hoping everybody watching it got that inspiration.
NASA’s Apollo program took place in the 1960s and 1970s.Its crewed missions to the moon ran from 1968 to 1972. In July 1969, the Apollo 11 mission landed the first astronaut on the moon. Over the next few years, five more flights brought 10 more American men to the sky.
Once Apollo ended, NASA shifted its focus to space stations as preparation for longer human spaceflights. America’s first space station, Skylab, launched in May 1973, hosted four crews of astronauts that year and the next. But Skylab was meant to be only a temporary station. Within several years, it broke apart in the atmosphere.
NASA astronauts won’t be the only people exploring the lunar surface. China aims to land its own astronauts at the moon’s south pole within the next decade.
8. When did the last Apollo moon landing happen
A. In 1968. B. In 1969. C. In 1972. D. In 1973.

D. To prepare for man’s return to the moon.
10. What does the underlined word “stirring” in paragraph 3 mean
A Tiring. B. Simple. C. Similar. D. Exciting.

Getting rid of(丢弃) old tyres(轮胎) has long been a problem. Every year many tyres are thrown. Some of the ways might be better than getting rid of them, but they are not especially green.
Energy recovery(回收利用) is one common way. This includes burning tyres to produce electricity, or as a way to provide heat for other industrial processes. But that produces planet-warming pollution. Tyres can be whole or broken in construction projects, such as repairing roads. There are, however, worries about chemicals from the tyres coming out and polluting the ground.
So some companies have begun exploring another pleasing idea. Since tyres are mostly made from hydrocarbons(碳氢化合物), it should be possible in principle to turn old tyres into environmentally friendly materials which can be used to run some cars they came from. One of the most thoughtful companies is based in Oslo, Norway. Later this year the company will start building a huge tyre-reused factory in Sunderland in northeastern England. In a couple of years, when the factory is fully operational, it will be able to turn 8 million old tyres into new products.
The process works by dividing a tyre into its three main parts. One is steel, which is used to support the structure of a tyre and which can be easily reused. The second is powder used to improve the continuous use of the tyre. The third is rubber. Some of that will be natural rubber from the rubber trees. The carbon black can be reused to make new tyres. That is of interest to tyre makers because it helps efforts to become carbon neutral(碳中和).
12. What is the disadvantage of energy recovery of tyres mentioned in the text
A. It is unpractical. B. It produces pollution.
C. It costs a lot. D. It produces less electricity.
13. How is paragraph 3 organized
A. By giving an example. B. By making questions.
C. By following time order. D. By comparing differences.
14. Which of the following best describes the huge tyre-reused factory
A. Costly. B. Useful. C. Dangerous. D. Short-lived.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Tyres can be divided into three parts
B. A company built a tyre-reused factory
C. Energy recovery can deal with old tyres
D. Old tyres can become environmentally friendly materials

When the final school bell rang, Eli walked home as usual. His trip took him across the playground, past the T-shirt factory, and across the main street. From there, Eli often cut through a blank lot (空地) where a house used to be. The house burned down years ago, but there were still flowers and trees to show that people used to live there. Everything was usual, but everything was immersed (沉浸在) in Eli’s sadness.
At that time, Eli watched a blue jay (蓝松鸦) fly into the old maple tree at the blank lot. The bird sat on a low branch and screamed loudly. It was as if the blue jay knew that he was sad, for he had failed his math test again. And he wrote a letter to Aunt Lucy. But Aunt Lucy did not reply to him.
When he got home, there was something in his mailbox. He found it was from Aunt Lucy, who lived in a different town. Upon opening it, his eyes widened with delight. It was a letter he looked forward to and a book! Eli read the letter.
Dear Eli, You told me that you didn’t do well in math. I hope you don’t give up and don’t get discouraged by a few failures. Because you once told me that you wanted to be a math teacher when you grew up and helped more children. I gave you a book. It’s about a great scientist you liked, I hoped you, like him, had been studying hard and sticking to your dream.
Love,
Aunt Lucy
After reading Aunt Lucy’s letter and receiving her encouragement, Eli’s sad mood improved a lot. Eli took the book and rushed to show it to his father, saying that it was the best gift he had ever received. His father smiled, noting Eli’s happy smile. Touched by Aunt Lucy’s thoughtful present, Eli felt an immediate urge (强烈的欲望) to thank Aunt Lucy right away. So with his father’s help, he decided to call Aunt Lucy.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Eli called Aunt Lucy but couldn’t get through.

A. In 1968. B. In 1969. C. In 1972. D. In 1973.
9. Why did NASA launch Artemis 1
A. To test an American new rocket.
B. To land at the moon’s south pole.
C. To build America’s first space station.
D To prepare for man’s return to the moon.
10. What does the underlined word “stirring” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Tiring. B. Simple. C. Similar. D.

C It costs a lot. D. It produces less electricity.
13. How is paragraph 3 organized
A. By giving an example. B. By making questions.
C. By following time order. D. By comparing differences.
14. Which of the following best describes the huge tyre-reused factory
A. Costly. B. Useful. C. Dangerous. D. Short-lived.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Tyres can be divided into three parts
B. A company built a tyre-reused factory
C. Energy recovery can deal with old tyres
D. Old tyres can become environmentally friendly materials
B 13. A 14. B 15. D

由时间词“over the past five years”可知,时态是现在完成时,表示过去动作对现在产生的影响,主语是the practice,所以填has become。故填has become。
此处考查固定短语play a role in,表示“在……中起作用”,important发音以元音音素开头,所以用不定冠词an。故填an。
故填who/that。
根据空前提示动词“have shared”可知, 空处填介词with,share sth. with sb. 故填with。
故填are encouraged。

An unforgettable misunderstanding
In an English class. I had a rather amusing misunderstanding. When coming across the phrase “a sight for sore eyes” initially I thought that it meant something unpleasant to look at because of sore eyes. Little did I know that I was completely off track!
After our teacher explained, this phrase turns out to be quite the opposite. It refers to something or someone that is delightful to look at and brings joy. I couldn’t help but laugh at my initial interpretation. It was truly a funny mix-up that left the entire class amused.
This unforgettable experience taught me the importance of not jumping to conclusions about idiomatic expressions in English.

Eli called Aunt Lucy but couldn’t get through. He tried several times, and each time his heart sank a little more as he heard the same recorded message. “Maybe she’s out shopping or visiting a friend.” Eli thought, trying to comfort himself. The waiting and uncertainty filled his heart. He was eager to hear Aunt Lucy’s voice and wanted to tell her that he wouldn’t give up and would study hard to achieve his dream.
Just then, there was a knock at the door. Eli’s heart was filled with doubt as he ran to open it. Standing there, with a broad smile and open arms, was Aunt Lucy. “I got your message, and thought it would be a nice surprise to come and see you in person,” Aunt Lucy said. Eli couldn’t contain his joy and hugged Aunt Lucy tightly, realizing that sometimes, the best communication was not through calls or letters, but through unexpected, heartfelt visits.
