Elm Professional Services owner Mia Van Tubbergh had plenty of business smarts—but no social media know how. So she turned to the younger generation and took on the two high school students who knew their stuff.

Have you noticed that as time goes on and technology advances, things seem to keep getting smaller and smaller That’s especially true with that machine we call the “computer.”
What exactly is a computer Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines a computer as “a usually programmable electronic device that can store, retrieve (检索), and process data.” Others think a computer as anything that transforms information in a meaningful way.
For thousands of years, people have tried to improve their lives by inventing machines to make certain tasks easier. Some people believe a simple mechanical device called an “abacus” was one of the earliest forms of a computer. Ancient people used the device to perform simple calculations (计算).Archaeologists (考古学家) have found evidence that the ancient Greeks used the abacus as early as the 5th century B.C.
Modern computers were developed much more recently. The first modern electronic computer—known as the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer or ENIAC—became operational in 1946. Weighing more than 30 tons, ENIAC took up as much space as 1,800 square feet. Since then, computers have become much smaller and much more powerful. While ENIAC could perform 5,000 addition problems per second, many of today’s laptop computers weigh just a few pounds and can perform several billion operations per second.
Today’s computers keep getting smaller and smaller. Large desktop computers gave way to laptops. Laptops have developed into a wide variety of even smaller computing devices, such as netbooks and tablet computers. Many people even carry computers with them everywhere they go. Smartphones, or cellphones, fit easily into a pocket and allow their users to make telephone calls, surf the Internet and conduct business.
So what’s the smallest computer available today As of 2015, the smallest computer is just one cubic millimeter. However, today’s computer manufacturers are constantly producing newer and smaller models at a rate too fast to keep up with. Whatever is the smallest today will probably be replaced with something even smaller tomorrow!
8. How does the author organize the text
A. In the order of time.
B. In the order of space.

9. What can we know about “abacus” from Paragraph 3
A. It was invented by Ancient Greeks. B. It was widely used in Ancient Greece.
C. It could carry out various tough tasks. D. It was among the earliest forms of computer.
10. Why does the author take ENIAC as an example
A. To compare it with ancient computers.
B. To tell readers how large earlier computers were.
C. To show readers how powerful the first computer was.
D. To explain to readers how modern computers operated.
11. Which might be the best title for the text
A. What exactly is a computer B. What is the smallest computer
C. What would future computers be like D. How did the computer come into being
A 9. D 10. B 11. B

根据第三段中“Some people believe a simple mechanical device called an “abacus” was one of the earliest forms of a computer. Ancient people used the device to perform simple calculations(计算). Archaeologists (考古学家) have found evidence that the ancient Greeks used the abacus as early as the 5th century B.C. (有些人认为,一种叫做“算盘”的简单机械装置是计算机的最早形式之一。古人用算盘进行简单的计算。考古学家已经发现证据表明,古希腊人早在公元前5世纪就使用算盘了。)”以及第四段中“Modern computers were developed much more recently. The first modern electronic computer—known as the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer or ENIAC—became operational in 1946. Weighing more than 30 tons, ENIAC took up as much space as 1, 800 square feet. (现代计算机是最近才发展起来的。第一台现代电子计算机——电子数字积分器和计算机(简称eniac)——于1946年投入使用。ENIAC重达30多吨,占据了1800平方英尺的空间。)”以及第五段中“Today’s computers keep getting smaller and smaller. Large desktop computers gave way to laptops. (今天的电脑变得越来越小。大型台式电脑让位于笔记本电脑。)”以及最后一段中“So what’s the smallest computer available today As of 2015, the smallest computer is just one cubic millimeter. (那么现在市面上最小的电脑是什么 截至2015年,最小的电脑只有1立方毫米。)”可知,本文从古代的计算机abacus讲到了第一部现代计算机ENIAC,接下来讲到了今天的计算机,结尾还提到未来计算机会变得更小、更强大。由此推断,本文作者是按照时间顺序行文的。故选A。
根据第三段中的“Some people believe a simple mechanical device called an ‘abacus’ was one of the earliest forms of a computer. (有些人认为,一种叫做“算盘”的简单机械装置是计算机的最早形式之一。)”可知,abacus是计算机的最早形式之一。故选D。

(ENIAC重达30多吨,占据了1800平方英尺的空间。从那时起,计算机变得越来越小,越来越强大。)”以及第五段中“Today’s computers keep getting smaller and smaller.
根据第一段中“Have you noticed that as time goes on and technology advances, things seem to keep getting smaller and smaller That’s especially true with that machine we call the “computer.” B选项“What is the smallest computer ( 最小的电脑是什么 )”概括文章主旨大意,符合标题。故选B。
D
Almost a quarter of the UK’s sea swimmers may not swim in the ocean this year because of sewage (污水) dumping by water companies, according to a poll (民意调查). Sewage was dumped into waters near England’s most celebrated beaches for nearly 8,500 hours last year. And there were 1,504 discharges (排出) in 2022 on beaches supposed to be free from such pollution.
The poll spoke to 2,272 UK adults between 21 and 23 on July. Just over 30% said they typically went sea swimming during the summer, and of these 23% said they would not this year because of sewage dumping by water companies. More than two in five of the regular beachgoers also said they were less likely to visit the British seaside this summer because of sewage discharges.
The Department for Environment says government should allow the Environment Agency to charge unlimited fines on rule-breaking water companies. Fines are currently capped (上限) at 250,000. The Department for Environment has been calling for a sewage tax on annual profits and a ban on bonuses of water company managers. “Coastal communities are at the mercy of water companies who unapologetically discharge raw sewage into popular swimming spots,” Tim Farron, the Department for Environment’s spokesperson said. “The government needs to stop letting water companies off the hook and finally ban these terrible sewage discharges and defend our tourism sector.”
A Water UK spokesperson said standards at beaches had greatly improved since the 1990s but that the industry recognized it had been slow to deal with the harm to our seas caused by sewage overflows. “Over the next seven years, water and sewerage companies plan to spend 10bn—doubling current levels of investment—on sewage treatment,” they said. “As part of this, bathing waters will be among the first to receive funding.”
12. What does the poll show
A. Water companies dumped the most sewage into waters last year.
B. Many swimmers avoid the water over fears of sewage on UK beaches.
C. Waters near England’s most celebrated beaches are not seriously polluted.
D. Over two fifths of the regular beachgoers in UK are between 21 and 23.
13. What suggestion does the Department for Environment make to the government
A. Reducing bonuses of water company managers.
B. Shutting down those rule-breaking water companies.
C. Fining rule-breaking water companies at least 250,000.
D. Introducing a sewage tax on water companies’ yearly profits.
14. What does the underlined part “off the hook” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Develop slowly. B. Improve too fast.
C. Free of responsibility. D. Attract public attention.
15. In which section of the website can you probably read the text
A Environment. B. Lifestyle. C. Fitness. D. Business.
B 13. D 14. C 15. A

根据首段中的“Almost a quarter of the UK’s sea swimmers may not swim in the ocean this year because of sewage (污水) dumping by water companies, according to a poll (民意调查).(一项民意调查显示,由于自来水公司的污水排放,英国近四分之一的海泳者今年可能不会在海里游泳。)”以及第二段中的“Just over 30% said they typically went sea swimming during the summer, and of these 23% said they would not this year because of sewage dumping by water companies.(超过30%的人表示,他们通常在夏天去海里游泳,其中23%的人表示,由于自来水公司的污水排放,他们今年不会去游泳。)”
根据第三段中的“The Department for Environment has been calling for a sewage tax on annual profits and a ban on bonuses of water company managers.(英国环境部一直呼吁对年度利润征收污水税,并禁止水务公司经理的奖金。)”
根据划线短语前的““Coastal communities are at the mercy of water companies who unapologetically discharge raw sewage into popular swimming spots,” Tim Farron, the Department for Environment’s spokesperson said.(英国环境部发言人蒂姆·法伦说:“沿海社区任由水务公司摆布,他们毫无歉意地将未经处理的污水排放到热门的游泳场所。”)”
根据首段中的“Almost a quarter of the UK’s sea swimmers may not swim in the ocean this year because of sewage (污水) dumping by water companies, according to a poll (民意调查). 【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。什么是爱?爱是如何运作的?本文讲述了爱背后的科学。
【16题详解】
根据上文“It makes the world go round. It teaches lessons, makes people feel warm, and sometimes causes pain.(它使世界运转。它能给人经验教训,让人感到温暖,有时也会带来痛苦)”以及后文“That’s right — we’re talking about the knee shaking, palm sweating, heart pounding feeling of love!(没错,我们说的是那种膝盖颤抖、手心冒汗、心跳加速的爱的感觉!)”
根据上文“There are many types of love. Most people feel love for members of their family—this long-term connection is often called attachment. They may feel this same emotion toward friends or even pets.(爱有很多种。大多数人对自己的家庭成员感到爱——这种长期的联系通常被称为依恋。他们对朋友甚至宠物也会有同样的情绪)”可知,该段首先讲述了对亲人、朋友等的爱,接下来讲述情侣之间的爱情。由此推断,选项F“浪漫的情侣和生活伴侣之间存在着一种不同类型的爱”起承上启下作用,符合语境。故选F。
【18题详解】
根据上文“Many experts believe it’s rooted in survival. After all, most people first feel love for family members or caretakers.(许多专家认为这源于生存。毕竟,大多数人首先感受到的是对家庭成员或照顾者的爱)”提到许多专家认为,爱的根源在于生存,故接下来是对这句话作解释说明。选项D意思是“家人和亲密的朋友互相照顾和保护”,这与前一句意义一致,且与后一句意义上存在因果关系。故选D。
【19题详解】
根据后文“It can reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Spending time with loved ones can also lead to a longer lifespan. In fact, close family and community relationships is one factor that may help people live longer.(它可以减轻压力,降低血压。花时间和爱的人在一起也能延长寿命。事实上,亲密的家庭和社区关系可能是帮助人们长寿的一个因素)”可知,后文提到爱可以减轻压力,降低血压。花时间和爱的人在一起也能延长寿命。事实上,亲密的家庭和社区关系可能是帮助人们长寿的一个因素。即爱对健康也有好处。故选项E“科学家发现,爱也可能对健康有益”最能概括该段大意。故选E。
【20题详解】
根据上文“With all this talk about love, maybe someone, you care about is on your mind. How can you show someone you love them There are plenty of ways! You can convey love by showing appreciation, giving praises, and being a good listener. Sharing, doing small favors, or giving a hug can also show a person you care.(说了这么多关于爱的话题,也许你心里还惦记着某个你在乎的人。你如何向别人表达你的爱呢?有很多方法!你可以通过表达感激、赞美和做一个好的倾听者来表达爱。分享,帮个小忙,或者给一个拥抱都可以表达你的关心)”可知,最后一段说的是如何表达爱,空格前介绍了几种表达爱的方式。选项A“当然,语言文字也很管用!”说的是表达爱的另外一种方式——爱就说出来。故选A。

Looking up at the black sky with shining stars, I smiled. The next morning, my Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club teammates and I would begin the first leg (赛程) of the George Bass Surfboat Marathon — the longest and toughest surfboat race in the world.
Over seven days and seven legs, we’d row 190km down the NSW coast, starting at Corrigan’s Beach in Batemans Bay and ending in Cocora Beach, Eden.
It was a competition my 10 teammates and I had been training two years for. At dawn each morning, including Christmas Day, we’d been straight into the boat and out on the water. For the last six months we’d added in gym sessions, too.
Surf clubs from all over Australia had come to compete. When our turn came to set off, we readied our boat. “We can do this, ladies,” I cheered.
On the water, we gave it everything we had. My aching muscles screamed at me to stop, but I pushed through. After two-and-a-half hours, we crossed the line first and won that leg. Over the next three days, we won another two and lost one. With three of four wins in the bag, on the fifth day we were hopeful. We only needed one more win to secure the marathon.
Our surfboat marathon win was so close — then disaster struck! When we made our way back to the shoreline, the water became aggressively rough. It was nothing we hadn’t rowed through before, so we kept going. But the boat started to shake and suddenly, it turned side-on and one by one we leapt off the boat, me included. Seconds later, the 300kg surfboat suddenly slammed on top of me. My body immediately went numb (麻木).
Emergency doctors raced over. It was decided, due to the severity of my injuries, I should be airlifted to hospital. I was taken to Canberra where I underwent tests, including CT scans, whose results showed I had a spinal (颈椎) injury. I received an operation. When I woke up, the surgeon visited. “We’ve inserted metal plates to put your back together,” he said. “We’ll remove them in about six months.”
注意:
The support I received while I was in hospital was amazing.

Now, after spending two months in hospital, I’m back at home.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The support I received while I was in hospital was amazing. With the medical staff’s help, I pushed myself one step at a time, determined to get better. It was hard, but I knew it’d be worth it. My surfboat teammates were equally amazing. They barely left my side and took turns nursing me, encouraging me and comforting me. A Go Fund Me page raised over $50,000 to help cover my medical costs, which was truly unbelievable. I was convinced a few broken bones would never keep me from pursuing my dream.
Now, after spending two months in hospital, I’m back at home. Although there’s still a long way to go before full recovery and getting back on the water again, I am resolved not to give up but to continue. My life may be as unpredictable as the ocean, but my love for surfboat will never fade away. Four months later, the big day for the metal plate to be removed from my body ultimately comes, accompanied by the thrilling news that we can kick off preparations for next George Bass Surfboat Marathon.

Elm Professional Services owner Mia Van Tubbergh had plenty of business smarts—but no social media know how. So she turned to the younger generation and took on the two high school students who knew their stuff.
“Social media is foreign to many older professionals—but very important for connecting with today’s customers,” Ms Van Tubbergh said. “We have this workforce sitting in schools doing this already but they’re doing it for fun.” Ms Van Tubbergh’s company, which helps launch products to market, took then Year 10 students Braith Mansfield and Tahmana Rudolph on for two weeks’ work experience.
Ms Van Tubbergh said with a bit of guidance and help with spelling and presenting in a professional environment, the boys now do about 80% of Elm’s social media marketing work for online customers. The pair work one day a week with Elm at Gosford and the rest at Kariong High School. Their duties include stand-alone posts on social media platforms, videos, stories and website headers. They recently finished a hard copy flyer(传单)for a major retailer that will be seen by every consumer who visits the website.
“I am so impressed by the performance of the two teenagers, who have helped grow the company’s social media following by 600%,” said Ms Van Tubbergh. “Braith, 17, and Tahmana, 16—now in Year 11—came into the business with a lot of unexplored social media experience. Working at Elm has provided them with a ‘digital platform of work that is worth its weight in gold’—a valuable resource they can show other employers when starting a full-time career.”

Have you noticed that as time goes on and technology advances things seem to keep getting smaller and smaller That’s especially true with that machine we call the “computer.”
So what’s the smallest computer available today As of 2015 the smallest computer is just one cubic millimeter. However, today’s computer manufacturers are constantly producing newer and smaller models at a rate too fast to keep up with. Whatever is the smallest today will probably be replaced with something even smaller tomorrow!
