An old English saying says, “Laughter is the best medicine.” One person who certainly would have agreed with this is Norman Cousins.
Norman Cousins worked for a magazine called Saturday Re-view for almost forty years. He also wrote articles about peace, traveling to many different countries to share his ideas.
In the 1960s, after returning to the United States from a busy and tiring trip to Europe, Mr. Cousins got sick. In less than a week after he got back, he could not stand. Every move that he made was painful. He was not able to sleep at night. The doctors told Mr. Cousins that they did not know how to cure (治 疗) his problem and he might never get over the illness. Mr. Cousins, however, refused to give up hope.
Mr. Cousins thought that the illness could be caused by unhappy thoughts. He did not want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness.
He began to experiment on himself while still in the hospital by watching comedy shows on television. Mr. Cousins quickly found that ten minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of sleep without pain at night.
Deciding that the doctors could not help him, Mr. Cousins left the hospital and checked into a hotel room where he could continue his experiments with laughter. For eight days, Mr. Cousins rested in the hotel room watching comedy shows on television, reading funny books, and sleeping whenever he felt tired. Within three weeks, he felt well enough to have a holiday to Puerto Rico, where he began running on the beach for exercise. After a few months, Mr. Cousins was able to carry on his work. He had laughed himself back to health.
1. What is the text mainly about
A. A funny person. B. An amazing life.
C. An interesting cure. D. A medical experiment.
2. How did the doctors respond to Mr. Cousins’ illness
A. They promised to cure him.
B. They didn’t think he was really sick.
C. They told him not to give up hope.
D. They said they were unable to help him.
3. Mr. Cousins thought that he could be cured by ________.
A. thinking happily and laughing
B. writing comedies and being positive
C. taking a holiday and taking good care of himself
D. running on the beach and relaxing
4. What did Mr. Cousins refuse to do in his experiments with laughter
A. Watch funny TV shows. B. Read funny books.
C. Steep whenever he feels tired. D. Take medicine.

Within three weeks, he felt well enough to have a holiday to Puerto Rico, where he began running on the beach for exercise. After a few months, Mr. Cousins was able to carry on his work. He had laughed himself back to health.

About twenty of us had been fortunate enough to receive invitations to a film studio (影棚) to take part in a crowd scene. Although our “act” would last only for a short time,we could see quite a number of interesting things.
We all stood at the far end of the studio as workmen prepared the scene, setting up trees at the edge of a winding path. Very soon, bright lights were turned on and the big movie camera was wheeled into position. The director shouted something to the camera operator and then went to speak to the two famous actors nearby. Since it was hot in the studio, it came as a surprise to us to see one of the actors put on a heavy overcoat and start walking along the path. A big fan began blowing tiny white feathers down on him, and soon the trees were covered in “snow”. Two more fans were turned on, and a “strong wind” blew through the trees. The picture looked so real that it made us feel cold.
The next scene was a complete contrast (对比). The way it was filmed was quite unusual. Pictures taken on an island in the Pacific were shown on a glass screen (幕). An actor and actress stood in front of the scene so that they looked as if they were at the water's edge on an island. By a simple trick like this, palm trees, sandy beaches, and blue, clear skies had been brought into the studio!
Since it was our turn next, we were left wondering what scene would be prepared for us. For a full three_minutes in our lives we would be experiencing the excitement of being film “stars”!
5. Who is the author
A. A cameraman.
B. A film director.
C. A crowd scene actor.
D. A workman for scene setting.
6 What made the author feel cold
A. The heavy snowfall.
B. The man made scene.
C. The low temperature.
D. The film being shown.
7. What would happen in the “three minutes” mentioned in the last paragraph
A. A new scene would be filmed.
B. More stars would act in the film.
C. The author would leave the studio.
D. The next scene would be prepared.

My daughter recently expressed interest in riding more. We live in a small city, and bicycles are a popular transportation choice here. I was excited at her choice. She would soon learn how easy it is to get around in this way, and how fast she can ride on two wheels. Bike tours are often quicker than bus or cab or car trips are.
Much to my surprise, none of this mattered to her. On one of our first trips together, I was fixing on the route ahead- turns, arrival time- when she said, “Hey Dad, wanna know a riddle ”
And then, before I explained how unsuitable this was, how we shouldn’t be telling jokes while riding, and how we should be focused on the road, on reaching our destination as soon as we could, she started, “What lasts forever but never dies ”
This is how it’s been. She has shared stories from the past, hopes for the future. I have been challenged to ride backward and to stretch legs out on both sides.
None of these have been dangerous, mind you. My daughter does not ride without proper care. She pulls even with me, for instance only on wide, empty streets. When the car appears, she quietly slips behind me and holds both eyes to the road. As soon as conditions of basic safety are met, though...
“Dad, slow down! Isn’t this a lovely neighborhood ” my daughter asks.
It is a lovely neighborhood. I’m surprised, I’ve come this way countless times, but never have I noticed any of this. Farther down the road, the laughter of children comes out from a game of ball.
I make a promise. From now on, I’m going to move more slowly on these rides. I’m going to notice the neighborhoods we move through. I’m going to enjoy this.
8. The writer had thought that riding would help her daughter ________.
A. go somewhere conveniently
B. have more bike excursions alone
C. do some tricks on the bike
D. learn the importance of time in traveling
9. According to the text, the writer’s daughter ________.
A. ignored the traffic while riding
B. had a good sense of safety
C. kept talking without looking ahead
D. enjoyed challenging any danger on the road
10. While looking at the neighborhood, the writer realized ________.
A. how easily his daughter was distracted
B. what a good neighborhood looked like
C. what he missed in the course of riding
D. why a neighborhood needed a garden
11. What promise did the writer make
A. To be conscious of time in riding.
B. To take his daughter to ride more often.
C. To focus his attention on the destination.
D. To ride slowly to enjoy the beauty along the road.
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据上文“Last summer, over 12,000 fans were at Wembley Arena in London, shouting and cheering. Thousands more were watching online.(去年夏天,超过1.2万名球迷在伦敦温布利体育场欢呼呐喊。还有数千人在网上观看)”以及后文“It was eSports(电子竞技). (它是电子竞技)”可知,上文提到了球迷在体育场欢呼呐喊,后文则说是电子竞技,可知本句是在说明这场比赛的性质,故E选项“But this wasn’t a football, basketball or tennis match.(但这不是一场足球、篮球或网球比赛)”符合语境。故选E项。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Millions of people in the UK play games for fun. Some of them have become professional games, playing games as their full-time job.(在英国,数以百万计的人玩电脑游戏以取乐。他们中的一些人已经成为职业玩家,玩游戏是他们的全职工作)”以及后文“They practise for ten or more hours a day, five or six days a week. They do exercises like typing something and trying to type it faster and faster. They also study videos of other players and plan ways to beat them.(他们每天练习10个小时或更多,每周练习5到6天。他们做练习,比如打字,并且试着打得越来越快。他们还研究其他玩家的视频,并计划打败他们的方法)”可知,上文提到了一些把玩电脑游戏作为全职工作,后文则提到他们需要付出的努力,可知本句与上文构成转折,指出作为一名职业玩家并不容易。故D选项“It’s not easy being a professional gamer, though.(然而,作为一名职业玩家并不容易)”符合语境。故选D项。
根据本空后的“You can watch games on video sites. They can be exciting to watch.(你可以在视频网站上观看比赛。它们可能令人兴奋。) ”可知,你可以在视频网站上观看比赛。而F项“As well as playing games, many people like watching them, too.(除了玩游戏,许多人也喜欢看他们。)”
根据本空前的“But are esports really sports Are players athletes Some say no.(但是电子竞技真的是体育运动吗?运动员是运动员吗?有人说不。)”可知,有人认为电竞玩家不是运动员。而G项“Esports players don’t need to run, jump, throw or do big physical actions.(电子竞技玩家不需要跑,跳,扔或做大的身体动作。)”
根据本空前的“But others say yes: esports are sports. Players do need some physical skills, especially hand-eye coordination (协调) and timing. Snooker(斯诺克台球) and shooting are classified as sports. (但也有人说是的:电子竞技就是体育。球员确实需要一些身体技能,尤其是手眼协调和时间安排。斯诺克和射击被归类为体育项目。 )”可知,这里指明斯诺克和射击也是更多注重技能而不是身体运动的体育,而A项“Then perhaps esports should be, too.(也许电子竞技也应该如此。)”承接上文,说明电子竞技和斯诺克和射击一样,更加注重技能,也应该是体育,符合语境。故选A项。

6. What made the author feel cold

A. ignored the traffic while riding
B. had a good sense of safety
C. kept talking without looking ahead

10. While looking at the neighborhood, the writer realized ________.
A. how easily his daughter was distracted
B. what a good neighborhood looked like
C. what he missed in the course of riding
D. why a neighborhood needed a garden
11. What promise did the writer make
A. To be conscious of time in riding.
B. To take his daughter to ride more often.
C. To focus his attention on the destination.
D. To ride slowly to enjoy the beauty along the road.
