A realtor (房地产经纪人) in Missouri is determined to make her hometown “a city where no one sleeps outside”.
For nine years Linda Brown and her husband David organized a nightly drop-in shelter where homeless people in Springfield could eat, shower, do laundry, use a computer, and socialize during bingo games and karaoke, but they wanted to do more. So they transformed an abandoned (废弃的) mobile home property into a village of tiny homes that provides permanent (永久的) housing to the chronically disabled homeless.
They opened Eden Village in 2018, building 31 tiny homes that are now occupied by people like Jonathan Fisher. He had lived on the streets for two years when he met Linda Brown. “In the worst moments of my life, Linda gave me guidance, care, and made me feel like I was still worth something,” Fisher says. He says that Linda took the time to learn about how he became homeless, and then encouraged him as he rebuilt his life. She even offered him a job. Now Fisher works full-time for Linda, helping others experiencing struggles similar to what he went through.
The driving philosophy (哲学) behind Eden Village is as follows: The root causes of a person’s homelessness cannot be thoroughly addressed until his or her immediate housing needs are met. “When I watched my homeless friends walk into a hidden, wet, and cold camp, I realized I had to do something,” Linda said. “And that made me have the idea to build the tiny-home village that serves as a place where the chronically disabled homeless can live with dignity and self-worth.”
“It needs someone who wants to do something, and then believes they can. I’ve watched Linda Brown live that out,” says Nate Schleuter, the chief visionary officer for Eden Village. “It’s exciting to watch the homeless who thought they’d live the rest of their life on the street now have a home.”
24. What does the underlined word “transformed” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Changed. B. Divided. C. Moved. D. Brought.
25. What did Linda Brown do after Fisher became homeless
A. She provided him with short-lived housing.
B. She offered him a job and encouraged him to rebuild his life.
C. She organized social events for him to attend.
D. She offered him guidance on finding food and clothing.
26. What can we know about the driving philosophy behind Eden Village
A. Every homeless person should be offered a job.
B. We should help the homeless quit some bad habits.
C. Housing is the key to solving the problem of homelessness.
D. Medical treatment should be given to the homeless.
27. What is Nate’s attitude towards Linda according to the last paragraph
A. Respectful. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Friendly.
C
A middle school teacher says, “Math is a language, and language is important in the study of math.” Finally, someone gets it. While high school students are afraid of learning Euler’s Theorem and reading Shakespeare, math and English have long been ranked as the most valuable subjects to learn. However, both of these subjects have long been ranked as the least favorite subjects of high school students.
There is a strong support for teaching our youth “critical thinking and communication”. And what are the subjects that most effectively teach these skills Math and English. By traditional definition, math would teach you critical thinking, and English would teach you communication. But today, I’d like to argue that English can teach you critical thinking, and that math can teach you communication.
When we think of math as a language, we see that math is an expression of communication. If a person in China writes a letter in Chinese to a person in the USA, it is almost sure that the American will not be able to read it. But if, instead, he sends a simple mathematical equation with its solution, it is almost certain that the American will be able to most probably “read” it. That’s communication! That’s using numbers to replace ideas.
And English can provide critical thinking skills. For example, we can look at the alphabet and our system of grammar. We assemble (集合) the letters in different ways to express our thoughts and ideas. This process requires a lot of critical thinking; in order to solve the problem of the world around us, we must arrange and understand the constants (常量) around us to create a thousand different definitions of our reality.
Math is a language, and language is a math. It’s just seeing this truth that may be the tricky part.
28. What do you think is Euler
A. A musician. B. An artist. C. A writer. D. A mathematician.
29. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2
A. The traditional idea about math and English is challenged.
B. It is traditionally believed that math can teach us critical thinking.
C. The author doesn’t agree that English can teach us communication.
D. Math and English can most effectively teach critical thinking.
30. How is Paragraph 3 developed
A. By describing a process. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By offering explanations.
31. Where is this text most likely from
A. A science paper. B. A medical report.
C. A language website. D. An education magazine.

Tokyo, with around 37 million people calling it their home, is the world’s most populated city-which means it has the most people living in it. About 120 million people in total live in the country of Japan, which means that nearly a third of the country lives in one area.
The Japanese government is offering money to families to move away from the city Tokyo. The scheme (方案) aims to encourage young people to move to less popular villages and towns around the edge s of the city. The scheme has been running for the last three years, but the government has recently announced that it is increasing the amount of money it is offering to 1 million yen per child. To be able to claim the money, however, families must move outside the greater Tokyo area, live in their new homes for at least five years and one person must be in work or plan to open a new business.
Japanese officials hope that the offer will encourage families with children aged up to 18 to bring life to villages. This will help ease some of the pressure on space and public services in the center of Tokyo. They hope around 10,000 people will move from Tokyo to the countryside around it by 2027.
There is, in fact, a growing trend of young Tokyo-dwellers (居民) who want to leave behind urban life in the city to move to smaller, cheaper, and quieter parts of Japan. The small ski town of Niseko in Hokkaido is also enjoying a small increase in population, thanks to an explosion of interest overseas in Japan’s ski slopes. But with Japan’s vast government bureaucracy, its top schools, as well as companies all concentrated in Tokyo, escaping the capital looks set to remain a day dream for most.
32. What problem is Tokyo involved in at present
A. Tough business environment. B. A lack of foreign tourists.
C. A too large population. D. High housing costs.
33. Why is the government improving the previous scheme
A. To help poor families go to cities.
B. To let children receive better education.
C. To urge the youth to leave their families.
D. To encourage more people to leave Tokyo.
34. What can be expected of the population migration project
A. It might be a failure. B. It will be a growing trend.
C. It will bring success to businesses. D. It will benefit government sectors.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Tokyo is an attractive city B. Tokyo has too many cars
C. Japan pays to solve a population issue D. Japan faces the problem of low birth rate

应用文(满分15分)
Last Friday witnessed a debate on “Is it Necessary to Learn Dialects ” which was held by the Debate Club in the school hall.
One group of students argued that learning dialects is necessary. They pointed out that dialects hold cultural and historical significance, helping individuals connect with their origins. The other group thought otherwise. They stressed that time and effort should be focused on mastering a universal language like Mandarin or English, which can enable individuals to obtain more information.
The event was really successful, not only offering students a stage where they can fully show their talents and potentials, but also equipping students with critical thinking skills.

W: A librarian in Indonesia’s Java Island is lending books to children in exchange for trash they collect in a new way to clean up the environment and get kids to read more. Raden Hendarti told reporters she is encouraging the kids to read and making them aware of the environmental protection. As soon as she shows up, the children surround her “Trash Library” and ask for the books. She’s happy the kids spend less time on online games as a result. “Let us build a culture of reading from young age to reduce the harm of the online world,” Raden said. “We should also take care of our waste in order to fight climate change and to save the earth from trash,” Raden said. She collects about 100 kg of waste each week, which is then sorted out by her colleagues and sent for recycling or sold. She has a stock of 6,000 books to lend and wants to take the mobile service to neighboring areas as well. 96% of 15-year-old children in Indonesia are educated, but the September report warned that the pandemic will leave nearly 80% of 15-year-olds below the minimum reading level identified by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
