They often have a quick snack and catch up with friends, and then have lunch at 12:55. Some pupils also participate in after-school activities and clubs. 2 The students there have more free time to do practical work or after-school activities and clubs. While in my school, most of us stay for long time every day. Background information The British education system There are five stages of education in the UK: namely early years, primary, secondary, further education and higher education. For all students between the ages of five (four in Northern Ireland) and sixteen in the UK, primary and secondary education is compulsory. When a student finishes secondary education, they have the option of doing further education and gaining additional academic or vocational qualifications. If a student plans to do higher education, usually consisting of university, they must complete further education.
