Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was “the easiest exam I’ve ever done”. That view is not surprising given the Wagga High School student loves language — so much so he has built a Chinese translation app.
Noah said his love of language was encouraged by his community. “Wagga is a place full of people from different cultures, and sometimes when I meet new people who have trouble speaking English I like to talk to them in their own language,” he said. “I also have a few Chinese friends so I think it will be cool to talk to them in their language.”
The 17-year-old started teaching himself Chinese around five years ago before taking distance education classes at the start of Year 11. His language ability was also useful in his part-time job at a local Chinese restaurant, where he translated orders for the cooks and customers.
Noah said he also had a basic knowledge of seven other languages. It was while teaching himself languages that Noah got the idea of the translation tool. “I decided to make my own app because there weren’t many around — all the other apps were full of advertisements (广告) and the translation feature (功能) wasn’t powerful enough,” he said.
His app also includes a word of the day feature, lessons on how to write Chinese characters (汉字) and a news feed of important Chinese news.
He said learning computer programming to build the app had been like studying another language. With the end of school around the corner, Noah said he would like to pursue (追求) both his interests in computer programming and languages. “I’m planning to work for a year and save so I can go on to university as I really want to make a career (事业) out of one of these two topics.”
4. What do we know about Noah
A. He began to learn Chinese at 11. B. He failed his first Chinese exam.
C. He likes teaching Chinese to people. D. He gets a lot from learning Chinese.
5. What are included in Noah’s app
A. Advertisements. B. Pieces of world news.
C. Suggestions for memorizing words. D. Ways of writing Chinese characters.
6. What has Noah decided to do shortly after high school graduation
A. Look for a job. B. Attend university.
C. Develop a new app. D. Learn more languages.
7. Which of the following can best describe Noah
A. Curious and creative. B. Humorous and honest.
C. Courageous and caring. D. Outgoing and outspoken.

Researchers recently studied 3,000 middle school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage (比例) of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional (情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant. Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy one another’s company (陪伴) without the need to talk.
In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady (稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
8. What did the study find about the 618 teens
A. They had more dinners with their parents.
B. They were more prepared to help themselves.
C. They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
D. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
9. What is the author’s attitude to her friend’s practice
A. She doubts it. B. She supports it.
C. She is worried about it. D. She cares little about it.
10. What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 4
A. They prefer to play with babies.
B. They want more freedom (自由) from parents.
C They pay attention to parents’ behavior.
D. They show more interest in new activities.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Teens want potted plant parents
B. Your kids still need conversation
C. Quiet families raise healthier teenagers
D. Parents know little about today’s teenagers
D
Since the 1980s, Special Olympics Unified Sports has created chances for many middle and high school students that they didn’t have before. Young athletes with intellectual (智力的) and physical disabilities (缺陷) who played in the Special Olympics could now play on middle and high school teams. More than 1.6 million Unified teammates now compete in more than 30sports around the world. Unified athletes train and play with Unified student partners.
Contoocook Valley Regional High School (ConVal) has two Unified sports programs:basketball and soccer. Kevin Came, a ConVal Unified basketball coach, understands the influence that these teams have on the athletes. “Unified Sports has the same influence on the athletes as all other varsity (大学) sports,” he says. “It builds their personalities, helps build sport skills, confidence, teamwork, and gives them the honor of playing for their school. Days of playing high school sports will be long remembered by the athletes as years go by.”
Unified teams are considered varsity sports, but there are no tryouts, and the spirit around both teams is always positive and encouraging.
Steve Erdody has coached Unified basketball for 10 years. “My goal is always to make it a positive experience every time whether it be a practice or game, and that goes for opponents (对手) too. We try to get every athlete on our team to score each game, as well as help the athletes on the other team score.”
Andres Torugee, a recent Con Val graduate, played on both the Unified soccer and Unified basketball teams. “If you are considering joining a Unified sport, you should go for it because it was so much fun playing soccer and basketball and the coaches are really good and funny too,” Torugee said. “Unified and Special Olympics taught me to play as a team and to share the ball with my teammates. It was a great way to make friends.”
12. What do we know about Unified Sports
A. It has spread worldwide.
B. It is open to the disabled only.
C. It includes fewer than 30 sports.
D. It has been popular for more than a century.
13. What does Kevin Came think of Unified Sports
A. It is challenging for the athletes.
B. It is not as famous as the Olympics.
C. It has a great influence on the athletes.
D. It helps the athletes more than other varsity sports.
14. What is Steve Erdody’s goal according to the text
A. Getting his team to win.
B. Coaching a Unified basketball team.
C. Making Unified basketball a positive experience.
D. Helping the athletes attend the Special Olympics.

52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
When I was a teenager, my mother had a hard time finding me onstage (在舞台上) in the dancing show. I was always in the back row out of sight, out of mind. Sometimes the stage lights didn’t even reach me, and I ended up dancing in the darkness.
I didn’t start out that way. As a kid, I was a confident dancer. At eleven, though, I put on weight. I still danced with energy every day, but I was always placed in the back row. My teachers didn’t remember my name half the time.
In high school, I found a ballet class that seemed promising. What I forgot was that ballet had even more requirements than other kinds of dance.“ You need to lose weight ”my teacher said. Obviously, I wasn’t t her star pupil. When they cast (为……选派演员) The Nutcracker one year, every single girl in my class was given a role except me. I could do the same moves they could, but I was still the girl from the back row who didn’t have the perfect body shape, and Iwas just not valued. After I saw the cast list, I decided I’d had enough: I walked out of the class and never returned.
Dance was still part of my life, though. I performed in an off-off-broadway show (百老汇演出) during college. I took classes off and on at another school and at my university. Finally, Idecided to start performing in flash mobs (快闪). While I had no interest in making it a career, Ienjoyed my projects.
I ended up doing a big network television show about flash mobs. On the first day of filming, the leaders of the dance team picked the strongest dancers for featured spots (主要的位置). In the audition (试演) I danced well, and I was chosen. The show kept inviting me back.More often than not. I was placed in the featured dancers’ group.
There was only one problem: Though I had fun, I still believed in those teachers from childhood instead of myself. In my mind, no matter what anyone said to me, I still thought that Iwas a terrible dancer.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At one performance, the director of the flash mob company, Staci finally called me out.

Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was “the easiest exam I’ve ever done” That view is not surprising given the Wagga High School student loves language — so much so he has built a Chinese translation app.
The 17-year-old started teaching himself Chinese around five years ago, before taking distance education classes at the start of Year 11.

Since the 1980s, Special Olympics Unified Sports has created chances for many middle and high school students that they didn’t have before. Young athletes with intellectual (智力的) and physical disabilities (缺陷) who played in the Special Olympics could now play on middle and high school teams.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I found my co urage and stopped hiding in the back.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
At one performance, the director of the flash mob company, Staci, finally called me out. “Why do you always hide yourself in the back row You’re born to be a dancer!” asked she gently, with a bright smile on her face. Hearing her words, I was aware that my efforts and love for dancing were seen the whole time. Touched and relieved, I raised my head and nodded to her.She then told me how excellent my movements were and how much she was eager to see my amazing performance. At that moment, an innervoice told me that it’s time to make a change.
I found my courage and stopped hiding in the back. In the following days, I found it quite easy and enjoyable to stand in the front row. And the more I stayed in the front row, the more confidence I had. It is the courage and confidence that brought joy back to my performance and helped me get back the true spirit of dancing I’d lost when I was eleven. The filming ended successfully and it also dawns on me that there’s nothing more important than encouragement and confidence on our long way to success.
