The World Is Our Classroom
Tonight, our family was going out to play under the full moon.
We first started going on full moon walks for ourselves, because my husband Todd and I, loved them and we needed these little doses of moonlight to stay happy and to function in society. But after we became parents, we did this for Sierra and Bryce. We wanted the kids to see that there is much magic in the natural world, most of which is accessible to anyone. We also wanted to show them it was not necessary to travel far from home to have an adventure, learn, and experience something new. Nearly every month, our family went into the night to “play” by the full moon.
Once we arrived at our location that evening, Sierra and I stood holding hands, waiting to cheer the full moon in its rising. A thin sliver of the apricot (杏黄色) moon poked above the Blue Mountain Ridge. Everyone stood up, witnessing its rising. More of the moon came out until it turned into a brilliant orange sphere. Todd explained to the children that the moon makes no light of its own, but simply acts like a mirror, reflecting the sun light back to us. “Does the moon’s face change ” Bryce asked. I told him that the moon rotates with the earth and the same side of the moon is always facing earth. We never see the other side, the far side of the moon. Sierra remarked that the moon looked larger when it was rising. I explained that it is an optical illusion (视错觉) because it is so close to the horizon that the moon tricks our eyes.
Much of the knowledge that Todd and I shared with them had been learned from our past life experiences. If we did not have the knowledge to explain and educate, we looked it up, either beforehand to enhance the experience, or afterwards, together, after we wondered and came up with a list of questions.
Sometimes all it takes is going outdoors and gazing up at the heavens.
4. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Going outdoors to watch full moon. B. Going on a hike through the forest.
C. Visiting a museum to learn about space. D. Traveling far from home to have an adventure.
5. Which of the following statements is true about the children on the family outing
A. It was a rare chance for them to play under the full moon.
B. They felt forced to watch the moon coming out with their parents.
C. They remained curious and kept digging deeper about the moon.
D. They knew the answers to all the questions put up by their parents.
6. What can we learn from paragraph 4 about the author and her husband
A. They did not make much effort to teach their children.
B. They gained all the knowledge from their past experiences.
C. They left some questions for the kids to get them thinking after each trip.
D. They sometimes looked up information in advance to better educate their children.
7. Choose the best sentence to complete the last paragraph.
A. As we stared up at the sky, a brilliant shooting star raced across the sky.
B. Families have to spend a ton of money to have fun and learn.
C. Opportunities to seek magical experiences and learning is right around us.
D. Wonder often occurs when you don’t quite understand what something is.
C
Math and literature are probably two of the subjects that bring students headaches. However, mathematicians choose to join the two together—they wonder whether the beauty of math can be found in literary works.
Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections between Mathematics and Literature a book published recently by: UK mathematician Sarah Hart, presents some interesting thoughts about “three”. She argues that the number has a special hold on Western literature and languages in general.
Many common phrases are in three words, such as “ready, set, go”. Being the first things kids may learn, some nursery rhymes(童谣) have a word repeated three times, such as “row, row, row your boat”. In stories, there are usually three main characters, such as Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Harry Potter series. For a series of novels, there are usually three books rather than four, according to Hart.
Three is the minimum number of point s that can define a two-dimensional (二维的) shape. Three sticks can create a triangle, a stable structure. These characteristics behind the number three give it “a sense of strength and completeness” which balances a story, according to the book.
Similarly, another study connected math and storytelling by mapping out readers’ “emotional experiences”. Researchers at the University of Vermont, US, analyzed more than 1,300 fiction works. As each book was divided into many 10,000-word parts, they rated how “happy” each part made readers feel. The ratings were then grouped into arcs (弧线), which showed how the readers’ emotions changed while reading.
The researchers summarized the arcs in six shapes, which covered almost all novels. The simplest patterns were “rise” and “fall”, showing that the plot was straightforward. Two of the most popular story shapes among readers were “rise-fall” and “fall-rise-fall”. It showed that more twists and turns in the stories are preferred by readers.
So why do researchers analyze (分析) the mathematics of literature As the study’s lead author Andrew Reagan told Scientific American, turning words into data “can teach us more about stories”.
8. What does paragraph 3 focus on about the number “three”
A. Its significance in literary works. B. Its importance in mathematical study.
C Its occurrences in literature and language. D. Its various interpretations in literature.
9. Why is the number “three” significant in Western literature and languages according to Hart’s book
A. It carries a special meaning in math. B. It can create a strong emotional impact.
C. It indicates the innovation of storytelling. D. It brings a feeling of power and unity.
10. How did researchers at the University of Vermont connect math and storytelling
A. By using shapes to show the readers’ reading experiences.
B. By comparing the number of characters in some works.
C. By analyzing math knowledge used in different novels.
D. By recording the use of numbers in fiction works.
11. What is the point of analyzing the mathematics of literature according to Reagan
A. To explore the role of literature in teaching math.
B. To improve readers’ mathematical skills.
C. To uncover hidden mathematical mysteries.
D. To gain a deeper understanding of stories.
D
We are now having face-to-face chats with friends instead of talking online. But have you ever been in a conversation that you wish you could run away from Scientists have proved that you might not be alone.
A research team surveyed 806 participants about a recent conversation they had with someone close to them. The participants were asked about the actual length and their expected length of the conversation, and how long they thought the other person wanted to talk for.
About one-third of the conversation length was unwanted, according to the team’s paper published in the journal PNAS. Also, more participants believed that they wanted to end the conversation first. On average, they continued talking for 3.87 minutes before they found that the other speaker wished the same thing. Situations are similar when it comes to strangers. Only about 1.6 percent of the conversations ended when both parties wanted them to.
The paper pointed out that when they talk to strangers, what makes people “mask their desires” may be their politeness. When talking to close friends and family, it may be their kindness as ending the chat too soon may hurt the other’s feelings.
So, what is the best way to end a conversation Saying you only have a certain amount of time to talk at the start of the chat is a good place to start. “Remember conversations don’t end because people don’t know when the other person wants to go,” Adam Mastroianni who led the study told the Inverse website. You should make your partner feel good about the end of the chat by “clearly communicating that you had a nice time and would like to talk again”.
Mastroianni also suggested that the difficulty in ending conversations may be a “coordination (协调) problem”. It’s hard to tell your grandma you want to get off the phone just because you want the conversation to be over, for example.
However, in some ways, this dilemma (困境) may not be a bad thing. People need social connections, and conversation is a good way to make these connections happen.
12. What did the research team survey the participants about
A. Their favorite conversation topics.
B. Their expected length of a recent conversation.
C. Their attitudes toward face-to-face chats.
D. Their ways of ending an unwanted conversation.
13. What did the researchers find out in their survey
A. Nearly half of the length of conversations was unwanted.
B. Most conversations ended when both speakers wanted.
C. Ending conversations with strangers was easier than with friends.
D. Many people tended to talk longer than they wanted in a conversation.
14. What is Mastroianni’s advice on how to end a conversation
A. Searching for a good excuse. B. Saying you want to leave directly.
C. Showing your willingness to talk next time. D. Waiting until the other speaker wants to end.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To introduce a method to start a conversation when both parties are ready.
B. To analyze why people are unwilling to have conversations with strangers.
C. To suggest that people hesitate to stop talking in an unwanted conversation out of curiosity.
D. To explain the reason why people are trapped in an undesired conversation and how to end it politely.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. C

词句猜测题。根据第二段中“We first started going on full moon walks for ourselves, because my husband Todd and I, loved them and we needed these little doses of moonlight to stay happy and to function in society. But after we became parents, we did this for Sierra and Bryce.”(我们第一次开始自己在月圆之夜散步,因为我丈夫托德和我都很喜欢,我们需要这些小量的月光来保持快乐,在社会上发挥作用。但当我们为人父母后,我们为塞拉和布莱斯做了这件事。)由此可知,第2段中划线的“this”指的是“去户外看满月”。故选A项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中““Does the moon’s face change ” Bryce asked. I told him that the moon rotates with the earth and the same side of the moon is always facing earth. We never see the other side, the far side of the moon. Sierra remarked that the moon looked larger when it was rising.”(“月亮的脸会变吗?”
根据第四段中“If we did not have the knowledge to explain and educate, we looked it up, either beforehand to enhance the experience, or afterwards, together, after we wondered and came up with a list of questions.”(如果我们没有足够的知识来解释和教育,我们就会去查阅,或者是在事先增强体验,或者是在事后,在我们感到疑惑并提出一系列问题之后,一起去查阅。)可知,为了更好地教育孩子,作者和她丈夫有时会提前查阅资料。故选D项。

Math and literature are probably two of the subjects that bring students headaches. However, mathematicians choose to join the two together—they wonder whether the beauty of math can be found in literary works.
Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections between Mathematics and Literature, a book published recently by: UK mathematician Sarah Hart, presents some interesting thoughts about “three”.
C. Its occurrences in literature and language.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11.

【答案】12 B 13. D 14. C 15. D

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Also, more participants believed that they wanted to end the conversation first. On average, they continued talking for 3.87 minutes before they found that the other speaker wished the same thing.(此外,更多的参与者认为他们想先结束对话。平均而言,他们继续交谈了3.87分钟,才发现另一位发言者也有同样的愿望。)”可推测出,许多人虽然想要先结束对话,但往往会继续交谈更久一点。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中的“You should make your partner feel good about the end of the chat by ‘clearly communicating that you had a nice time and would like to talk again’.(你应该通过‘清楚地传达你玩得很开心,想再聊一次’,让你的伙伴对聊天的结束感到满意。)”可知,你应该表达你想下次再聊的愿望,让对方对结束聊天感到满意。故选C。
【15题详解】
目的意图题。通读全文,第一段中的“But have you ever been in a conversation that you wish you could run away from Scientists have proved that you might not be alone.(但你有没有进行过一次你希望自己能逃避的谈话?

When it comes to health tips, all too often we tend to merely search for good habits that stick. ____16____. Making small changes can bring big improvements in your health and wellbeing. Here are some useful tips on how to kick bad habits.
◆ Being over-ambitious about exercise
We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to keep active. ____17____ Sometimes it’s enough just to make time for a ten-minute power walk. Scientists at the universities of Cambridge and Leicester recently showed that short, intense bursts of activity are more beneficial to the heart than leisurely exercise lasting more than twice as long.
◆ Scrolling while eating
Being on your phone when you eat means you’re not paying attention to your food or allowing yourself a break from that non-stop cyber chatter. Sit down to have your meal. ____18____, focusing on enjoying what you’re eating.
◆ ____19____
Socializing helps you feel better about life. It might even sharpen your memory and help you live longer, according to some research. So make a few dates with friends and family instead of being alone all the while.
◆ Being hard on yourself
____20____, it’s time to be kind to yourself. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. When feeling exhausted, stop and take microbreaks—stick your head out of the window, have a coffee, read an article. You’ll resume what you’re doing feeling refreshed. Make an active effort to stay positive and congratulate yourself every day on one good thing you’ve achieved, however small.
A. Being sociable
B. Avoiding people
C. Put your mobile out of reach and eat mindfully
D. But do you need to go to the gym five days a week
E. Once you have managed to achieve a long-term goal
F. If you’re struggling to meet exercise goals, or to get everything done
G. However, breaking bad health habits is as important as developing good ones
【答案】16. G 17. D 18. C 19. B 20. F
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章就如何戒掉一些坏习惯给出了建议。
【16题详解】
空格前的句子“When it comes to health tips, all too often we tend to merely search for good habits that stick.(说到健康秘诀,我们往往倾向于寻找坚持下来的好习惯)”指出我们往往倾向于寻找坚持下来的好习惯,而空格后的句子“Making small changes can bring big improvements in your health and wellbeing.(一些小的改变可以给你的健康和幸福带来巨大的改善)”指出做出改变的好处,所以空格处的句子肯定提到戒掉坏习惯的好处,这样前后才能衔接起来。G项“However, breaking bad health habits is as important as developing good ones(然而,改掉坏的健康习惯和养成好习惯一样重要)”可以衔接上下文,符合题意。
D项“But do you need to go to the gym five days a week(但是你需要一周五天去健身房吗 )”在形式上和内容上都符合题意。故选D项。
【18题详解】
空格前的句子“Being on your phone when you eat means you’re not paying attention to your food or allowing yourself a break from that non-stop cyber chatter.(吃饭时玩手机意味着你没有注意到你的食物,也没有让自己从不停的网络聊天中休息一下)”指出吃饭时玩手机的弊端,而空格后的部分“focusing on enjoying what you’re eating(专注于享受你所吃的东西)”是让你专注于享受你所吃的东西,所以空格处的句子肯定是建议放下手机。C项“Put your mobile out of reach and eat mindfully(把手机放在够不着的地方,用心吃东西)”符合题意。故选C项。
【19题详解】
从空格所处的位置可知,空格处的句子应该是列举的坏习惯之一,而下文的内容“Socializing helps you feel better about life. It might even sharpen your memory and help you live longer, according to some research. So make a few dates with friends and family instead of being alone all the while.(社交让你对生活感觉更好。根据一些研究,它甚至可能提高你的记忆力,帮助你活得更久。所以,多和朋友和家人约会,而不是一直一个人呆着)”指出参加社交的好处,所以空格处的句子一定和不愿参加社交有关。B项“Avoiding people(不愿见人)”符合题意。故选B项。
【20题详解】
根据空格后的逗号和句子可知,空格处只能填入一个非谓语形式或从句;根据该部分的主题“Being hard on yourself(对自己苛刻)”和空格后的主句“it’s time to be kind to yourself(是时候善待自己了)”可知,只有F项“If you’re struggling to meet exercise goals, or to get everything done(如果你正在努力达到锻炼目标,或者完成所有事情)”在内容上和形式上符合题意。故选F项。
