Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading. “Growing up, I was really shy, so I always turned to books,” she said. “They became my best friends when I didn’t have one.”
In 2019, when Emily was in her second year of high school, her dad suffered from cancer. The news was difficult for the family. Books became an even bigger comfort, and she started thinking about families in similar situations. When her father recovered, she came up with a plan to help others. “The idea came from the fact that there were kids who were facing the same problem,” she said.
Then, Emily started the book drive in her hometown, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The goal was to collect books and give them to kids being treated for cancer in local hospitals. Her father was not surprised by this plan. “She always wants to do things for the neighborhood,” he said. Since the start of the book drive, which she calls For Love & Buttercup, Emily has collected more than 10,000 books.
Emily had no idea how much attention her work would get. She started by posting on social media, asking
people in her area to donate. “I was expecting maybe two or three neighbors to do it,” she said. “But it ended up blowing up,” especially when newspapers began reporting it.
The Children’s Inn is one of the places where Emily has donated books. “Donations like Emily’s share a piece of the world with kids and families that they may not experience,” said its director, Aisha Campbell. Emily continues to run the book drive with her parents’ help. She hopes to one day make it reach more kids. The memory of the first time she visited children who’d received her books sticks with her. “It was the best day of my life,” she said. “I realized I wanted to do this type of work forever.”
What made Emily come up with the book drive
A.Her father’s illness. B.Her care for others.
C.Her habit of reading. D.Her own shyness.
What did Emily’s For Love & Buttercup want to do
A.Help her father defeat cancer. B.Give her father a surprise. C.Comfort other kids in need. D.Collect books for hospitals.
How did Emily feel about the book drive at first
A.Uncertain. B.Surprised. C.Proud. D.Disappointed.
What is Emily’s future plan
Getting more help from her parents.
Starting another book drive very soon.
Making her program benefit more kids.
Writing books about her experiences.

Have you ever imagined that scientists could make robots that will be able to feel and touch just like humans In the future robots might no longer be stiff (僵硬的), metal machines. They might be able to act and even look just like us!
The system used to help robots feel is called “haptics technology”. Haptics is a word which is used to describe the way we understand something through the use of touch. For example, now doctors can use robotic machines in operations. But this is a bit dangerous. Why Because the robot cannot feel anything. The doctor can only see what the robot is doing by watching on a screen.
However, US scientists have created a machine called Neo that a doctor wears on his or her head. Neo is connected to the robot doing the operation. When the robot touches something, Neo imitates the touch on the
doctor’s head.
The invention of Neo is great news for doctors because now they can feel what the robot is feeling. But scientists have even bigger dreams. They are trying to make robots that can feel for themselves just like humans. They have created sensors that are just like the human fingertip. These sensors are at the end of the robots’ hands. Messages will be sent to the robots’“brains”. And the robots will know how to hold something without breaking it.
If these scientists succeed, robots will feel just like a human and will be able to control themselves. Can we imagine humans will no longer be the masters (主人) of the world because robots are just as smart as we are in 500 years
The underlined word “imitates” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .
A.trains B.draws
C.copies D.remembers
The fourth paragraph mainly talks about .
A.how Neo works B.robots that can feel for themselves like humans
C.what Neo can do D.how a message is sent to the robots’ brains 30.What can we learn about sensors from the passage
A.They can help robots write messages. B.They can help robots write break things C.They are at the end of the robots’ heads. D.They can help send messages to robots.
The writer may think the future will be if the robots replace humans to be the masters of the world.
A.surprising B.bright
C.relaxing D.hopeful
D
Life as an astronaut has various unique attractions. This can include experiencing weightlessness and looking back at Earth as a pale blue dot. Food is not among them. Space travelers over the years have become used to certain foods such as freeze-dried ice cream and liquid salt and pepper. Now, the menu is set to be augmented, with the first space-grown lettuce ( 生 菜 ) found to be as safe, nutritious and fresh as the Earth-grown variety.
Gioia Massa of NASA Kennedy Space Center is the lead scientist on the lettuce-growing project. She said that growing food in space could be wonderful for astronauts on missions lasting more than one month. “If you
store packaged food for a long time, not only will the flavour and nutritional quality decrease, but the vitamins will degrade. After eating such food, astronauts’ intake of nutrition is not ensured,” she said. “Besides, for them, there may also be psychological benefits of growing and looking after plants.
Lettuce has been grown in batches ( 分 批 ) onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The vegetable production system is known as Veggie. It is composed of plant pillows (sealed units containing ceramic soil), LED lighting and a watering system that allows astronauts to inject water through a tube. The lettuce crops grow undisturbed for 33 to 56 days before being harvested and eaten, or deep-frozen and returned to Earth for chemical and biological analysis.
The space-grown lettuces are similar in make-up to Earth-grown ones but they have higher levels of bacteria (细菌), possibly due to their growth in a warmer, more humid (潮湿的) and closed-air system. But they are not found to carry any harmful bacteria.
NASA is now enlarging the range of produce grown onboard the ISS. It will be quite some time before any vegetables can be transformed into a dish, however. “While we have nowhere to cook up there now, we can look forward to more things that taste fresh,” Massa explained.
What does the underlined word “augmented” probably mean in Paragraph 1
A.Enlarged. B.Engaged. C.Reduced. D.Measured.
What do we know about growing space-grown lettuce
It’s flavor and nutritional quality decline.
It is terrible for astronauts on missions.
It can contribute to astronauts’ mental health.
It will make sure the astronauts’ intake of nutrition.
What can we infer from the text
Lettuces will be grown in batches onboard.
The vegetable production system consists of three parts.
It will take at least 56 days to harvest the space-grown lettuce crop.
Thanks to growing environment, the space-grown lettuces don’t contain any harmful bacteria.
What does Massa mainly intend to explain in the last paragraph
The difficulty in growing produce onboard.
The necessity to enlarge the space onboard.
The desire to enjoy cooked vegetables onboard.
The expectation to enrich the variety of produce grown onboard.

When Ariel rode her bike to Jamaie Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York, last November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. After a one-mile walk, she found a beautiful female swan (天鹅) near the water’s edge. Ariel, 30 , who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund health recovery center, knew that some swans can be aggressive (攻击性的). But as she approached this one, it didn’t move. Ariel found that the swan which buried its neck in its wings seemed to have lost its all energy.
She was certain that the bird needed medical attention. Ariel took off her jacket and covered the bird’s head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up, and carried it in her arms gently. And then a thought struck her: What do I do now
Her best choice was the recovery center, but that was across the East River and clear on the other side of town. How was she going to transport a 17-pound swan on her bike all that way Luckily, some warm-hearted strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station.
On the subway, no one seemed particularly to focus on the feathered passenger. “ One man was sitting
right in front of me on his phone. I don’t know if he noticed there was a swan in front of him.”said Ariel. Ariel called the center, and Tristan Higginbotham, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove the bird, the bike, and the rescuer to the center.

第四部分写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Dear Vincent,
You wrote that your parents won’t listen when you tell them things. I understand that quite well that you are puzzled or a little dissatisfied. You think that your parents can’t understand you because they are adults.
I recommend that you talk to your parents about your anxiety. It is better I believe to be straightforward and honest than to repress your feelings and keep them inside. Most parents don’t listen to their kids because they fail to see that their child is growing up and is becoming more mature as the days pass by. Probably the best way to tackle this is by keeping your cool. Remember that no matter how angry they can get, they still love you. Staying calm helps you maintain your understanding and trying to convince them in a calm state of mind goes a long way in helping you prove your point. It will also make you sound far more superior to them when you are in calm mood despite the tense situation.
I am sure that you will develop better relationship with your parents.
All the best.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
There, the staff members along with Ariel gave the swan careful examination. And they decided that the swan might have lead poisoning, caused by eating weights used on fishing lines. With careful attention, the swan was back up on her feet, ending up even making a handsome boyfriend at the center—another injured swan, and living a happy life with him. The staff thought it a happy ending and built a web page on the Internet to praise Ariel and call on more people to follow Ariel’s example.
Soon Ariel’s story got spread online. Moved and inspired by her selfless contribution and generous kindness, Internet users posted to sing highly of her one after another. When interviewed, she said “Animals are the friends of mankind and an important part of the natural ecosystem. It is human precious natural resources. Protecting animals to maintain natural ecological balance has important significance. Thus, we human, as their friends, should pay our efforts to save and protect them. Naturally, I just did what I thought right.”
