There are many great and useful inventions. The first great invention was the wheel and it is still widely used today. This invention made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distance.
In the early 1800s, the world started to change. There was little unknown land in the world. People began to work to make life better.

There were more great inventions in the early 20th century, such as helicopters in 1907, movies with sound in 1910 and jet planes in the 1930s. This was also a time when a new material(织物) was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.
By that time most people had had a very good life. Man has a desire to know more. So they began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Since then other countries, including the United States and China, have made their steps into space.

Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的). A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that misunderstandings were always possible, even over something as simple as "yes" and "no".
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren't paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, "Do you have cold drinks " The woman there didn't say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means "yes".
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, "Do you have cabbage today " He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means no.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean "yes" or "no".

Many people worry that their memory is bad, especially as they get older. Life would be so much better if we had the ability to remember things easily. So how can we improve our memory
Many people think that repeating things is the best way to remember them. While this certainly helps short-term memory, it may not help you to remember things for very long. The British psychologist Ec Stanford tested himself on five prayers (祈祷文) . He had read them aloud every morning for over 25 years, but he found that he could remember no more than three words or so of them!
So what about the right "memory training" We've all heard about people who can memorize packs of cards by heart. Can anyone learn how to do it According to experts, there are many ways of training your memory.
One method is to form a mental picture of the things you want to memorize. It may be useful in learning foreign languages. You can create a picture in your mind connected to a word you want to remember.
Another method is to invent a story that includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this skill; when tested later, they were able to remember 90% of them!
Besides, ask yourself lots of questions when you try to memorize a large amount of information. It is the best way to form meaningful connections. So, for example, if you were reading about a kind of disease (疾病) , you would ask yourself questions like: "What parts of the body does it influence " and so on. This is far more useful than just reading and re-reading notes.

Now students’ English handwriting gets worse and worse. That makes their teachers feel worried. Is your English handwriting beautiful If not, here are four steps that really work!
◆Use paper that has lines
Using paper that has lines can keep you writing straight when you write English words or sentences. Those lines on the paper can help you to write words in the right size. Be sure to fill the lined space completely. And make sure those capital letters(大写字母) are written properly.
◆Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. For some kids, going slower makes the handwriting clear. If you write too fast, it’s hard for you to stop where you should, and even worse, you may make more mistakes.
◆ Hold your pencil right
When you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. Some kids press (按,压) down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriting not nice. Try to relax yourself and don’t hold the pencil so hard. Let your writing appear nice and clean. If you do so, people will guess you are a student with a good habit.
◆Draw more pictures
Drawing can improve your handwriting. You need to use the skills to control your pencil better when you are drawing pictures. Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by yourself at home.
Handwriting is very important. Imagine you are a world-famous movie star or a well-known sports player, what do you do when your fans run up to you Give them your autographs, of course!

A. In a travel guide. B. In a students’ magazine

Zheng He, the Columbus of the East, was a Ming dynasty explorer whom the Chinese people are proud of.
He was born in 1371 and, 11 years later, was caught by the army of a rich young man called Zhu Di and made to work for him. Over time the rich man saw that Zheng He was very clever and strong and they became close friends. In 1403 Zhu Di was made the King of China and he asked Zheng He to join his new government.
The King wanted to learn more about the world and show other countries his power. He ordered many new ships to be built and made Zheng He their leader. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He led seven sea trips to different parts of the world. He certainly traveled to India, Africa and the Middle East. A few people think his ships may have even reached South America and Australia.
Each trip lasted between two and four years and it is believed he sailed more than 50,000 km during the years of his travels. With 28,000 men and over 300 ships, such as boats for food, water and even soldiers’ horses, Zheng He led a fleet. It was bigger than any fleet in Europe in the following over 500 years!
On these trips he brought with him many Chinese goods like silk and medicine to give to foreign kings or to sell for local goods. He returned from each trip with boats filled with expensive things such as gold and jewellery, foreign guests and strange animals like a giraffe.

A little girl stood near a small church. She had to leave because it was too crowded. "I can' t go to Sunday School", she cried to the pastor (牧师) as he walked by. The pastor guessed the reason, and, taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for her in the Sunday school class. The child was so touched that she went to bed that night thinking of the children who have no place in the school.
Some years later, this child was dying in one of the poor buildings. And the parents sent the kind-hearted pastor to meet their daughter, as her poor little body was being moved, they found a worn purse. Inside was found 57 cents and a note which read, "This is to help build the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday School."
