Technology and Life
It is a great honor for me to deliver a speech concerning “Technology and Life”. With the
rapid development of technology, its influences on our daily lives are everywhere.
Thanks to high-tech, we can stay connected with friends and families, no matter where
they are. We can easily access information, and even order food and groceries with a few taps
on our mobile phones. However, technology also brings negative influences. With the constant
exposure to the screens, our eyes get tired. What’s worse, there is always a concern about
privacy and data security.
Despite these drawbacks, I think technology’s positive impacts outweigh the negative ones.
So, we need to use technology in a way that maximizes its benefits while minimizing its harm.

One possible version:
I was left in his room, my heart pounding wildly — what about the messy card I knew
what I had to do. I closed my eyes and picked up the card with my fingertips. I took it into the
bathroom and cleaned the card. I dried the wet card on a towel and laid it out to dry. I washed
my hands and took a deep breath of relief...I had saved the card. The following night I told
Zach what I did, probably hoping for some kind of royal treatment.
Zach did thank me and I felt our relationship softened a bit afterwards. As the years passed,
the Pokemon cards began collecting dust in our basement. Zach and I became closer than ever.
Maybe we were just getting older or had more in common. But I felt that night was a turning
point. I didn’t have to give Zach a kidney or anything to show him how much I was willing to
do for him. I just had to selflessly clean his Charizard card. I can’t think of a better way to say,
“Hey brother, I got your back.”

M: Toast, please. And can you bring extra butter (3)
Text 4

M: Yeah. Why
W: Your cousin who is five years older than you looks much younger beside you. (4)
M: Hmm…I’m not very happy to hear that, actually.
Text 5
M: I think you need to wash your hair. (5) It looks really dirty.

Text 8
M: Did you like the movie (12)
W: No, I hated it. (12)
M: Really I thought it was so good! What did you hate about it
W: Well, for one thing, it was very unrealistic. (10) I’ve never seen a pig and a cow fly
before!
M: Well, it was made up.
W: But I thought the movie was based on a true story.
M: No. Where did you get that idea
W: I read an article about the movie! At the very end, it said, “Based on a true story.”
M: Well, I don’t think that’s correct. There were a lot of other things in the movie that weren’t
real, like the mouse that talked.
W: What about the dancing cheese
M: Uh…yes, that was made up, too.
W: What was your favorite part
M: I liked when the pig came into the house and the girl looked so surprised! (11)

M: You have to watch this video of a lion attacking a zebra. (13)
W: I hate watching stuff like that! It’s so violent. (14)
M: It’s very natural for animals, though. We kill insects all the time. It isn’t much different.
W: Killing an insect is quick and painless. It takes a long time to kill a zebra!
M: Not if the lion is a good hunter. Look! The lion is slowly following the zebra. And a
monkey is watching in the tree! (15)
W: Wow! The lion is so big, yet he is very quiet. (16)
M: Now he’s going to attack! It’s actually very fast. (16) The zebra is already dead.
W: OK, it wasn’t so bad. Now can we watch a video of some cute kittens or puppies I like
those much more.
M: Sure. Here is a cute video of some baby panda bears. (13) Is this better
W: Yes. This won’t give me bad dreams. Oh, they are so sweet playing with each other!
Text 10
The smell made Jack remember the old days. He loved searching for treasures there, at the
top of his grandparents’ big, old house. It began one day, when he was very young. He found a
box filled with old military clothes from another time. (17) Since then, he had found a coin
collection, old photographs, and wooden toys. Jack’s grandparents had both died, and this
was his last visit to the old house before it was sold. (18) He was expecting to take one last
look at his old treasures, when he saw a loose board on the floor. Jack lifted it up, and many
years of dust rose into the air. (19) Beneath the board, there was a shoebox. Jack was so
excited to find one last treasure! He carefully lifted the shoebox, enjoying the excitement of his
discovery. Inside was a thick, handwritten notebook. Jack immediately knew his
grandfather’s writing, and thanked him silently for this last gift. (19) (20)
