As the saying goes, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” Music is very important in our lives and here are four of the greatest musicians in history.
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Born in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven never held an official position in Vienna. He supported himself by giving concerts, teaching piano lessons, and the sale of his compositions (作品). The last 30 years of Beethoven's life were filled with a lot of hard times, the first of which was his deafness. Beethoven's music greatly influenced the next generation of musicians.
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Bach, “the father of modern music”, was born in Eisenach, Germany. His parents died when he was ten years old, and then he went to live with his brother Johann Christoph Bach, who was an organist (风琴手) in Ohrdruf. He stayed there until 1 700. Eight years later, he moved back to Weimar, where he served as a court organist for nine years. His music greatly influenced classical music.
Frédéric Chopin (1810 - 1849)
Chopin was born in Warsaw, Poland. He showed a talent for playing the piano at a very young age. Chopin began composing when he was still a child, but some of his early works have been lost. He gave his first public concert in 1818. Chopin was considered as the leading musician of his time.
Franz Schubert (1797 -1828)
Schubert was born and died in Vienna. Unlike most of his predecessors, Schubert was not a great performer. He never had much money, but he was very productive. He wrote his first masterpiece (代表作) when he was only seventeen. However, he died young, before his talents had even been known.

I had a picnic one day with my sister. We both like to ride her motorcycle and that day we rode it to the nearest park. We bought some coffee and cakes, and then we enjoyed our food. Within a few hours, the sky changed and looked ready for a heavy rain. We packed everything and were ready to go. My sister, who was sitting on a bench then, suddenly was very still and couldn't talk to me. She couldn't move. Her eyes were rolling and she was about to lose consciousness (知觉). I held her in my arms and asked if she wanted to rest. She didn't answer and only said “Sorry”.
It started to rain and I didn't know what to do. She was fighting to stay aware but her skin was pale and her eyes were acting strangely. Suddenly, from nowhere, a woman on a bicycle appeared, wearing a raincoat. “She isn't looking good. Do you want me to call an ambulance (救护车)?” “Yes, please, yes!” I begged.
She did. Struggling with the rain, she managed to call some policemen, who quickly helped me carry my sister to a safer place. The ambulance arrived and we went to a hospital, where she was treated in time and she came to life the next morning after some rest and medical help.
An interesting fact was that I guessed the woman in the raincoat was a doctor or a nurse. I later learned from one of the police officers who told me: “No. She was an ordinary person who took some courses on emergency situations (紧急情况).”
I am so grateful that she appeared exactly at the right moment. I don't know why or how. I didn't even get the chance to say thanks to her.
24.What happened when the author and her sister were ready to go
A.They had a fight. B.Her sister fell ill suddenly.
C.They were caught in the rain. D.They had difficulty packing things.

A.To keep order in the park. B.To send the sick girl to hospital.
C.To carry the sick girl to a safer place quickly. D.To carry the sick girl onto the ambulance.
27.What was the author's main attitude towards the woman

More and more birds are flying to settle at Qinghai Lake, one of the highest inland lakes in China, thanks to the protection efforts of local government. Covering an area of over 4,000 square kilometers, Qinghai Lake is also the country's biggest salt lake.
Located in Northwest China's Qinghai Province, the lake is famous for the two islands at its northwest point—Cormorant Island and Egg Island. The two islands have plenty of floating grass and various schools of fish, offering rich food sources to birds. The islands have become a dreamland for different kinds of groups of birds and have been called “Bird Islands”.
Each March and April, when ice and snow covering the Qinghai Tibet Plateau (高原) start to melt, over 20 kinds of birds fly to the Bird Islands to lay eggs. During the months, flocks of birds cover the whole sky over the islands and bird eggs can be found everywhere. Visitors can hear the singing of birds from miles away. These have become a world famous symbol of the lake.
To protect this dreamland for birds and support calls for ecological protection, China set up the Qinghai Lake National Natural Reserve at the end of 1997. Meanwhile, the State has pointed out the Bird Islands and Spring Bay of Qinghai Lake were central protection zones.
Inspectors and conservators often patrol (巡逻) the lake, enriching local residents' knowledge of related laws and spreading knowledge about animal protection to visitors. They are making great efforts to call on people to love and protect the birds. At the same time, they have built special fences around the island area to prevent wolves, foxes and other carnivorous animals, as well as illegal hunters from breaking up the birds' building nests, laying eggs and breeding (繁殖). As a result, more and more birds are coming to the islands for sheltering and breeding.
28.Why are more and more birds coming to the biggest salt lake in Northwest China
A.Because it is getting warmer and warmer.
B.Because it is being reformed.
C.Because environments there are getting more and more agreeable to them to live in.
D.Because the people there are becoming richer and richer.

D.Corn from the local farmers.
30.What can you infer according to the passage
A.Over 20 kinds of birds come to the Bird Islands before March.
B.Flocks of birds fly up to the whole sky over islands to lay eggs.

A recent study has found that being exposed (使暴露) to low temperatures creates more good fat which burns calories in the body. Being cold is similar to the effects of exercise, protecting against being too fat and improving health. The researchers have discovered that exposure to cold changes the make up of gut bacteria (肠道细菌), which can lead to burning fat and reduce body weight.
While ordinary white fat, known as bad fat, piles on when we eat more calories than we burn, brown fat seems to burn extra calories to produce heat. Babies have lots of brown fat — they need it to keep warm — but there are small amounts in the necks of adults, too. Studies have shown that staying in a cold environment can fasten the formation of more brown fat in the body.
Researchers predicted the health benefits of being exposed to cold may have something to do with gut bacteria. They exposed the first group of mice to a cold temperature of 6 ℃ for up to 10 days and discovered this caused a major change in the make up of the mice's gut microbes (微生物), preventing the mice from gaining weight.
Then, the gut bacteria were put into the second group of mice that did not have the gut microbes. It was found that they increased tolerance (忍耐力) to cold temperatures. The mice also lost weight as the changes in gut bacteria promoted the formation of brown fat. However, after three weeks of cold exposure, the body weight began to remain stable.
Professor Mirko Trajkovski said that they provide powerful evidence that gut microbes play a key role in people's ability to adapt to the environment. They are excited about testing whether gut microbes could be a promising approach to preventing being fat.
32.What's the new result of the recent study
A.Good fat has nothing to do with calories.
B.Exercise can change the make up of gut bacteria.
C.Being cold helps people lose weight.
D.Gut bacteria will stop producing brown fat.
33.What do we know about brown fat
A.It's usually considered as bad fat. B.It will fail to produce in cold bodies.
C.It can't be found in the bodies of adults. D.It burns more calories in low temperatures.
34.With the gut bacteria, the second group of mice ________.
A.kept losing weight every day B.had much less brown fat in the cold
C.gained a better ability to stand the cold D.produced more gut microbes in the body
35.According to Mirko Trajkovski, the result ________.
A.could provide new treatment for overweight people
B.shows people how to get used to the cold
C.reminds people of the importance of keeping warm
D.may cause more people to take exercise

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall. I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, “I'm sorry sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remembering my wife's interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn't see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop onto the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

When dogs get lonely, they like keeping themselves busy by making a big mess around the house and that doesn't really sit well with their owners. That's why one German radio host, who also happens to be a dog owner came up with the idea for a programme designed to relax dogs and make them feel like they aren't alone.
When 30 year old Stephan Stock, a radio host at RadioTon, in Germany's Baden Württemberg region, announced the creation of a programme aimed at dogs, everyone thought it was just a clever April Fools trick. However, it wasn't. For the past three and a half months, Hallo Hasso has been pumping out music for lonely dogs both on the radio and online.
Stock says he was inspired to create the special programme by his pet dog, Layla, who would sometimes get so bored when left alone that she would keep herself busy by making a big mess around the house. He and his colleagues at RadioTon started researching what kind of music usually appeals to dogs, and learnt that it should have as little drum and electric guitar as possible, and should be very slow.
“It's not about keeping dogs quiet,” Stock said about Hallo Hasso. “It's more about the dog feeling he's not alone.” He adds that Layla isn't as restless since listening to Hallo Hasso, and has become relatively quiet, even letting him take a nap (打盹儿) to the music from the radio.
Hallo Hasso is only available in Baden Württemberg, via radio, but if you'd like to see if it can calm your four legged pet, the programme can also be accessed online here. Just press the “play” arrow at the top of the page and let the music work its magic. If this doesn't work, there's always Dog TV.

A.Bark fiercely. B.Lie quietly.
C.Create surprise. D.Cause damage.

A.They thought poorly of it.

If it had not been for Fan Jinshi and her team, the world cultural heritage of Dunhuang Mogao Caves in a remote Chinese desert might have long been destroyed by sand, weather or humans.
Born in Beijing and raised in Shanghai, Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle to preserve the ancient Buddhist wall paintings at Dunhuang, in Northwest China's Gansu Province. The 1,653 year old Dunhuang Mogao Caves are a huge collection of Buddhist art—more than 2,000 buddha figures and 45,000 square metres of paintings spread among 735 caves. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Archaeologist Fan was sent to Dunhuang after graduating from Peking University in 1963. While in Dunhuang, a remote village in the desert then, Fan lived in an abandoned temple. At first, she did not even dare to go out to the toilet at night. To protect the treasures from sand and dampness, Fan and other workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and started monitoring temperature and humidity in the caves. They also controlled the number of visitors.
In the late 1990s, with tourism booming nationwide since national holidays were extended, the local government planned to go public with Dunhuang Mogao Caves, but found Fan firmly in__their__way. “The heritage would have been destroyed if it had been listed,” she said.
Dunhuang Academy has now photographed and cataloged online all the sculptures and paintings. “Despite our efforts to minimise damage, we can't completely stop them from being eroded. But the digital database will last.”
Fan was grateful when her husband joined her in Dunhuang in 1986 after 19 years of separation. Her two sons grew up seldom with her accompany. “I have not been a good mother or wife. With regard to my family, I'm full of guilt,” she said. Fan, 81, retired four years ago as the director of Dunhuang Academy but continues her efforts as a national political adviser.
1.When was Fan separated from her husband
A.In 1963. B.In 1967.

Paper cutting is one of China's most popular folk arts. Archaeological (考古学上的) finds show that the tradition started in the 6th century; it is even supposed that the beginning of paper cutting is even a few centuries earlier.
Paper cuts have special importance at festivals and on holidays. To get rid of (摆脱) the old and bring good luck, people put up paper cuts on the windows on the Eve of the Spring Festival.
Paper cuts are not produced by machine, but by hand. They are done all over China, but are different in the method in different areas. There are two methods of making paper cuts — by using scissors (剪刀) or knives. As the name suggests, scissors cuttings are made with scissors. Several pieces of paper (up to eight pieces) are placed together. The patterns are then cut with pointed scissors. Knife cuttings are made by putting several pieces of paper on a table. Following a pattern, the artist cuts the patterns into the paper with a knife.
In the past, paper cuts are usually made only by women and girls. They use scissors and paper to cut all kinds of pictures such as apple trees, peach blossoms, mice, fighting roosters (公鸡) and rabbits eating carrots.
This used to be one of the skills that every girl was to master. Professional paper cutting artists are, on the other hand, almost always men who can make a living by working together in workshops.

A Kenyan teacher who gave away most of his monthly salary (工资) to poor people has won a $1 million Global Teacher Prize.
In 2016, Peter Tabichi came to Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School, a public school, in a faraway Kenya's Rift Valley. The school had just a single computer with problems connecting to the Internet. It had no library or laboratory, as well. To make matters worse, the students came from poor families where basics like food and clothing were hard to come by. While these difficulties would have caused most people to leave quickly, Tabichi stayed.
Realizing that starving kids made for poor students, the teacher began using as much as 80 percent of his monthly salary to buy food and school things for them. He set up a science club to get kids interested in the topic. “Our laboratory does not have everything, but I encourage them to think wider and use what we can get locally.”
Tabichi and other four teachers regularly visited low achieving, at risk students at their homes to provide one on one help and to understand the difficulties these children faced daily. Tabichi also encouraged parents to allow girls to continue their high school education.
Tabichi's efforts have made a difference. School registration (注册) has more than doubled to almost 400 now since he came. In 2017, 16 of the 59 graduating students went to college, while in 2018, the number rose to 26. In 2017, five students qualified (符合资格) for the Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair). This year, two other students competed in the 2019 Intel ISEF held in Phoenix, Arizona.
The teacher, however, owes his success to his students, saying, “I am only here because of what my students have achieved. This prize gives them a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything.” Tabichi plans to spend the prize money on his school community and feeding the poor.

The Terracotta Army is one of the must visit attractions for all travellers to China. The attraction is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
What's special
The Terracotta Army is the buried army of Qin Shi Huang, an ancient Chinese emperor. These ancient sculptures were built and buried over two thousand years ago near the city of Xi'an. They were discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well to look for underground water. Over eight thousand terracotta warriors and horses have been uncovered since then. Each warrior is made of clay. They are around two meters tall. The sculptures are so detailed that it is possible to guess the age, rank and personality of each one. None of the warriors are the same.
The best time to visit
The Terracotta Army is an indoor attraction, which is not likely to be affected by weather, so it can be visited all year round.
As the museum is one of the must visit attractions in China, it is crowded most of the time. We advise our customers to avoid the following periods when the museum is particularly crowded:
·National Day Holiday (October 1~7), when it is fully packed.
·Labour Day Holiday
Weather in winter is dry, cold and the least comfortable, and it's also the worst season for air quality, but it's also low season.
Travel style: private, group or independent
A private tour means a lot of flexibility (灵活性), and you will be well taken care of by a private guide and a driver. The museum is crowded most of the time, but our guides know how to escape the crowds, and help you to enjoy more in the museum. See our 3 Day Terracotta Warriors Private Tour.
Going with a group you won't get lost, but it lacks flexibility and personal service.
Travelling on your own, you may meet a lot of trouble, such as wasting time on finding a taxi or public bus to the attraction, lining up for tickets, reading maps, making sense of Chinese signs, etc.
1.What can we know about the Terracotta Army from the first two paragraphs
A.The soldiers are made of clay.
B.The soldiers are of the same age.
C.It is discovered by workers.
D.It is located in the center of Xi'an.
2.Which is the best time to avoid crowds
A.Summer holidays.
B.National Day Holiday.
C.Labour Day Holiday.
D.Clear winter days.
3.If you want to travel with the least trouble, which should you choose
A.A private tour.
B.A tour group.

Pangolins (穿山甲) are the most trafficked (非法交易) mammals in the world and are facing extinction. To draw attention to these scaly (有鳞片的), anteater like animals, a new wildlife documentary, Eye of the Pangolin, is attempting a unique way to inspire action and conservation. Partnering with the non profit organization Pangolin Africa, the documentary was made available on YouTube in May 2019. The intention is to reach communities wherever the Internet is available, especially African communities, who live near the animal's habitats.
Over two years, the documentary crew traveled to South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic and Gabon in search of the four unique species of pangolin, which has never been achieved before. Filmmakers Bruce Young and Johan Vermeulen say that they went into the shoot knowing relatively little about pangolins, but grew to respect and appreciate the animals. Getting close to the creatures over two years was a crash course in these secretive creatures. Johan Vermeulen said, “One thing however that might seem unimportant is that they are actually quite fussy eaters. You would think they would eat any type of ant, but they all prefer a specific type ant.”
Pangolins are hunted illegally across Africa for their scales, which are used for traditional medicine, and their meat. In April 2019, Singaporean customs officials conducted two separate seizures of 24 tons of pangolin scales, which equals to the death of 69,000 pangolins.
Though the documentary focuses less on the trafficking of pangolins, and more on the animals in their natural habitat, the aim of the documentary is to inspire viewers around the world to call for action to end trafficking and protecting these unique creatures.
Filmed on location in South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic, and Gabon, this powerful documentary is the story of two men on a mission to get all four species of African pangolin on camera for the very first time.
1.What is the purpose of the documentary
A.To study the situation of pangolins.
B.To collect fund to protect pangolins.

How do people name their children Different countries have different ways to name their children. Let's take a look at a few.
In Spain, a child usually has two given names and two surnames. The first surname is the same as the father's first surname, and the second is the mother's first surname. The given names may be the same as a grandparent's.
In Nigeria, children's names are chosen by family elders. The children's parents wait for names from the grandparents and other important family members. These names describe the day of the baby's birth. The baby's name is announced at a party on the eighth day after the child's birth.
In Turkey, babies are often named according to the time of their birth. For example, if a child was born in spring, the chosen name might be Bahar. It means spring. A baby born during bad weather might be named Tufan. It means storm.

第二节
One possible version:
Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was deep in the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Steve was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sit in the cold air and wonder how to get out of the forest.
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A car appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Steve and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was from this trip that Steve began to treat me more like a friend and equal, rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.

W:David, what do you want to drink, tea or coffee
M:A glass of green tea, please.
W:What about the kids
M:And the kids will drink coke. But just get one bottle and two glasses. They'll share it.
W:I have apple juice in the kitchen. I think juice is better for them.
M:I know, but they always refuse to drink it.
(Text 7)
M:Look out of the window. I can't believe this traffic.
W:Well, it's rush hour. I think we'd better stay in the room for a bit longer. We can't get anywhere now.
M:You're right. So when do you want to set off for the museum
W:It's 12:30 now. There will be less traffic in about an hour. We can leave for the museum then.
M:OK. Have you heard that there was a big fire in the city last night
W:No. How did you know it
M:Some people talked about it when I was reading a paper in the hall this morning.
(Text 8)
M:You look tired. Did you go to bed late last night
W:Actually I went to bed around 10:00 p.m.. But I didn't fall asleep until 1:00 a.m..
M:Why did you have difficulty in falling asleep
W:The girls downstairs threw a party last night. There was loud music. The party wasn't over until midnight. When the party was finally over, I couldn't fall asleep at all.
M:Do the girls often throw parties
W:You may not believe it, but they throw a party every Friday night.
M:That's bad.
W:Yes. And that's why I want a new apartment. Are there any near yours
M:What kind of apartment do you want
W:It doesn't have to be big. One bedroom is enough. I don't want to share it with others. I can't afford the rent if it's too big.
(Text 9)
W:When were you born, Ted
M:I was born on February 10th, 1980.
W:Wow, it's hard to believe. We celebrate our birthday on the same day. But I'm five years younger than you.
M:That's really amazing. So were you born in Brighton, too
W:No. I was born in Oxford. I came to Brighton about two years ago.
M:Did you live in Oxford all the time before you came to Brighton
W:No. I lived in Oxford till I turned 15. And then I went to New York and attended high school there. After that I attended college in Chicago and after leaving college, I returned to England and worked in London. Later, I came to Brighton. So have you been abroad
M:Yes. I stayed in Beijing for half a year when I was 22.
W:How did you find your time there
M:It couldn't be better.

Aelita Andre, a young artist from Australia, has been described as “the world's youngest professional artist”. She is known for her special painting style and her young age.
In 2011, when Aelita was only four years old, she held her first show in New York. It contained 24 of her paintings, each on sale for between $4,400 and $10,000. At the age of seven, the little girl became the youngest professional painter in the world.
Aelita showed strong interest in painting when she was only a baby. Her parents are both artists. At that time, she often watched them draw on the floor. When she was only nine months old, Aelita crawled over one of her father's paintings and began mixing colours — that's when she started painting.
Now Aelita's cheapest works are selling for more than $3,000 each. She has already made more than $100,000 from her art — more money than most artists earn in a lifetime.

21.答案与解析:C 考查细节理解。依据“He supported himself by giving concerts, teaching piano lessons, and the sale of his compositions(作品)”可知,贝多芬通过举办音乐会、教授钢琴课和出售自己的作品来养活自己。因此选C。
22.答案与解析:C 考查细节理解。依据“He stayed there until 1700. Eight years later,he moved back to Weimar, where he served as a court organist for nine years”可知,Bach在宫廷做风琴手一直到1717年,故选C项。

When you use our university libraries there are different learning spaces available, so you can decide what is best for your purpose.
Social learning areas
We recognize that you can learn from your friends so we have provided social study areas in all our libraries. Here you can discuss your work with your friends without worrying about disturbing others as a proper level of noise is accepted, though we do ask that you're considerate (替他人着想的) of other students and staff.

In order to keep the quiet study environment and avoid disturbing other students, discussion about your course or exams, or using mobile phones isn't permitted anywhere in these areas.
Food, drink and phones
Cold snacks and drinks can be consumed (消费) in most areas of the libraries though we ask that you help keep the learning environment clean and pleasant for everyone by clearing rubbish into the bins provided.

B
When I was in fourth grade, I worked part time as a paperboy. Mrs. Stanley was one of my customers. She'd watch me coming down her street, and by the time I'd biked up to her doorstep, there'd be a cold drink waiting. I'd sit and drink while she talked.
Mrs. Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband. “Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning,” she'd say. The first time she said that, soda went up my nose.
I told my father how Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr. Stanley were still alive. Dad said she was probably lonely, and that I ought to sit and listen and nod my head and smile, and maybe she'd work__it__out__of__her__system. So that's what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. After a while, she seemed content to leave her husband over at the cemetery (墓地).
I finally quitted delivering newspapers and didn't see Mrs. Stanley for several years. Then we crossed paths at a church fund raiser (募捐活动). She was spooning mashed potatoes and looking happy. Four years before, she'd had to offer her paperboy a drink to have someone to talk with. Now she had friends. Her husband was gone, but life went on.
I live in a community now, and my “paperboy” is a lady named Edna with three kids. She always asks me how I'm doing. When I don't answer “fine”, she will stick around to hear my problems. She has lived in the community most of her life, and she knows about community. Community isn't so much a place as it is a state of mind. You find it whenever people ask how you're doing because they care, but not because they're getting paid to do so. Sometimes it's good to just smile, nod your head and listen.
25.Why did soda go up the author's nose
A.Because he was talking fast. B.Because he was shocked.
C.Because he was in a hurry. D.Because he was absent minded.
26.Why did the author sit and listen to Mrs. Stanley according to the text
A.Because he enjoyed the drink. B.Because he wanted to be helpful.
C.Because he took the chance to rest. D.Because he tried to please his dad.
27.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “work it out of her system”?
A.Recover from her sadness. B.Move out of the neighbourhood.
C.Turn to her old friends. D.Speak out about her past.
28.What does the author think people in a community should do
A.Open up to others. B.Depend on each other.
C.Pay for others' help. D.Care about one another.
C
“There's no place like home.” This English saying has much truth in it: the best place to be is surrounded by our treasured possessions and our loved ones and with a roof over our head. And for many young adults, it's the only affordable place to stay; somewhere where they can receive first class service from mum and dad. But this comes at a price!
In some countries, it's quite traditional for people in their late teens and early 20s to live at home with their parents, but in other places, flying the nest to start their own independent life is very desirable. But there's been a growing trend, in the UK at least, for young people to return home to live—or not to leave home at all.
A survey by a price comparison website found that 18% of adult children in the UK said they were moving back home because of debt, compared with 8% last year. More young people had lost their jobs, and others couldn't afford their rent compared with the previous year. So, it's easy to see why they're increasingly becoming home birds.
The BBC's Lucy Hooker explains that many returning adult children enjoy home comforts. But for the ‘hoteliers’, that's mum and dad; the survey found the average cost to them has gone up sharply, and that they are sacrificing luxuries and holidays to look after their ‘big kids’. Emma Craig from Money supermarket says “they're trying to look after their children more. If your child comes home and you see them struggling financially, you feel more awkward asking them for rent or to contribute. It tugs on your heartstrings more.”
With parents splashing out around £1,886 on takeaway food, buying new furniture and upgrading their Wi Fi for the benefit of their offspring, it's easy for the returning children to put their feet up and make themselves at home. That's before they learn a home truth—that one day it might be their own kids who'll be checking into the hotel of mum and dad!
29.Which proverb might present the young British's living conditions
A.A lazy youth, an awful age. B.East or west, home is best.
C.Two heads are better than one. D.Nothing comes wrong to a hungry man.
30.Which might be the reason for the increase of home birds
A.The popularity of living independently. B.Looking after their old parents.
C.The increase of unemployment rate. D.Their parents' financial offer.

There are energy savings to be made from recyclable materials, sometimes huge savings. Recycling plastics and aluminium, for instance, uses only 5% to 10% as much energy as producing new plastic or smelting (提炼) aluminium.
Long before most of us even noticed what we now call “the environment”, Buckminster Fuller said, “Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to be left around because we've been ignorant of their value.” To take one example, let's compare the throwaway economy with a recycling economy as we feed a cat for life.
Say your cat weighs 5kg and eats one can of food each day. Each empty can without its food weighs 40g. In the throwaway economy, you would throw away 5,475 cans over the cat's 15 years' lifetime. That's 219kg of steel—more than a fifth of a ton and more than 40 times of the cat's weight.
In the recycling economy, we would make 100 cans to start with, and then replace them over and over again with recycled cans. Since almost 3% of the metal is lost during reprocessing, we'd have to make an extra 10 cans each year. But in all, only 150 cans will be used up over the cat's lifetime, and we'll still have 100 cans left over for the next cat.
Instead of using up 219kg of steel, we've used only 6kg. And because the process of recycling steel is less polluting than making new steel, we've also achieved the following significant savings: in energy use—47% to 74%; in air pollution—85%; in water pollution—35%; in water use—40%.
33.What does Buckminster Fuller say about pollution
A.It is becoming more serious. B.It destroys the environment.
C.It benefits the economy. D.It is the resources yet to be used.
34.How many cans will be used up in a cat's 15 years' lifetime in the recycling economy
A.50. B.100. C.150. D.250.
35.What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A.To promote the idea of recycling. B.To introduce an environmentalist.
C.To discuss the causes of pollution. D.To defend the throwaway economy.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we prepared clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough,we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I rushed into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

Donna Strickland was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Arthur Ashkin and Gérard Mourou for their work. It's the first time in 55 years that a woman has won this celebrated prize, but why has it taken so long We look at four other pioneering female scientists — past and present — who had a genuine claim to the prize.
Lene Hau
Hau is best known for leading the research team at Harvard University in 1999 that managed to slow a beam of light, before managing to stop it completely in 2001. Often topping Nobel Prize prediction lists, could 2019 be Hau's year
Chien Shiung Wu
Chien Shiung Wu's “Wu experiment” helped disprove the “law of conservation of parity” , a fundamental particle physics law. Her experimental work was instrumental but never honoured, and instead, her male colleagues won the 1957 Nobel Prize for their theoretical work behind the study.
Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Perhaps the most famous absent treatment: then student Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered the first radio pulsars (脉冲星) in 1967, when she was a PhD student at Cambridge. The Nobel Prize that recognised this great discovery in 1974, however, went to her male supervisor, Antony Hewish. The award is considered one of the most unfair in the history of the Nobel Prize, so even some people called it “The No Bell Nobel”. Recently awarded a £2.3 million Breakthrough Prize, she joked: “I feel I've done very well out of not getting a Nobel Prize.”
Lise Meitner
Physicist Lise Meitner led groundbreaking work on the discovery of nuclear fission (核裂变), the splitting of an atomic nucleus into smaller nuclei (原子核). However, the discovery was acknowledged by the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which was won by her male co lead, Otto Hahn.
21.Who is always predicted to win the Nobel Prize
A.Lene Hau. B.Chien Shiung Wu. C.Jocelyn Bell Burnell. D.Lise Meitner.
22.In which year was the Nobel Prize called “The No Bell Nobel”?
A.1944. B.1957. C.1967. D.1974.
23.What is the text mainly about
A.Some unfair Nobel prizes. B.Some women who missed the Nobel Prize.
C.The first woman who won the Nobel Prize. D.Some great women physicists in history.

Traditionally, robots have been hard, made of metal and other hard material. But a team of scientists at Harvard University in the US has managed to build an entirely soft robot — one that draws inspiration (灵感) from an octopus (章鱼).
Described in science journal Nature, the “Octobot” could pave the way for more effective autonomous robots that could be used in the search, rescue and exploration. “The Octobot is a minimal system which may serve as a foundation for a new generation of completely soft, autonomous robots,” the study's authors wrote.
Robots built for precise, repetitive movements in a controlled environment don't do so well on the rough ground or in unpredictable conditions. And they aren't especially safe around humans because they're made out of hard and heavy parts that could be possibly dangerous to their users.
So researchers have been working on building soft robots for several ten years. They've taken inspiration from nature, looking to animals from jellyfish to cockroaches, which are often made up of more soft matter.
But creating a completely soft robot remains a problem. Even if engineers build a silicone (硅酮) body, it's still a big challenge to make soft versions of essential parts, such as a source of power.
“Although soft robotics is still in its early stage, it holds great prospects for several applications, such as searches and rescue operations and exploration”, Barbara Mazzolai and Virgilio Mattoli of the Italian Institute of Technology's Center for Micro BioRobotics wrote. “Soft robots might also open up new ways to improving wellness and the quality of life.”
24.What's the special feature of the Octobot
A.It's completely soft. B.It's made of hard metal.
C.It's very small. D.It looks like an octopus.
25.What's the disadvantage of traditional robots
A.They're hard to control. B.They're too heavy to be moved.
C.They can't predict conditions. D.They can't behave well all the time.
26.One of the biggest difficulties is to build soft robots' ________.
A.silicone body B.complex parts C.precise movements D.soft power source
27.What's the possible application of the Octobot
A.Medical research. B.Life rescue. C.Machine operation. D.House cleaning.

More and more people around the world are living in city areas and the need for high quality fresh food is rising. At the same time, new homes, apartment buildings, shopping centers and roads are taking the place of rich land near cities. That makes growing crops in tall buildings an interesting solution.
In Dallas, Texas, a company called Green Habitat Hydroponics (GHH) sells vertical farming supplies. “You can control anything and everything you want to with hydroponics — the process of growing plants in sand, small stones or water with added nutrients (营养物) but not soil,” Kris Maxwell, a sales employee at GHH said. “For example, certain plants need certain nutrients and pH levels. But don't worry. You can change the hydroponics solutions (溶液) by adding or taking away nutrients, or by changing the PH level, or even by controlling the amount of water in a solution, so that plants get all the nutrients and water requirements they need. There are even different solutions for certain stages in the plants' growth.”
In this indoor environment, LED lights, which are environmentally friendly, replace the sun. Heaters, coolers, special machines control the temperature and humidity (湿度). Up to 300 plants can grow in one container unit.
GHH also sells aeroponic systems. With this system, plants are placed in huge containers where only the roots are put in a solution. Nutrient rich wastes from fish, for example, are filtered and sent through the system.
The good thing about this method is that no fertilizers have to be used because the fish produce all of the necessary nutrients. Another advantage of vertical farming is that no pests will damage your crops.
What do you think Does vertical farming have a bright future
28.Which of the following may not be the reason for vertical farming
A.The earth has to support more and more people.
B.Many people nowadays are flowing into cities.
C.People show greater interest in eating fresh food.
D.The fields for growing crops near cities are reducing day by day.
29.As for vertical farming, what can be used to take the place of the sunshine
A.Heaters. B.Coolers.
C.Air conditioning machines. D.Light from a kind of bulb.
30.The underlined word “filtered” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by “________”.
A.balanced B.destroyed C.removed D.created
31.What is the advantage of aeroponic systems used in vertical farming
A.They may bring about a good harvest. B.There is no need for chemical nutrients.
C.People can get delicious food. D.They can save energy.

You carry 1.3 kg fatty material in your head that controls everything you will ever do. This fantastic control center lets you think, learn, create, and feel emotions. It also controls everything your body does. What is this amazing machine It's your brain — a structure so amazing that the famous scientist James Watson called it “the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe”.
Imagine your cat jumped onto the kitchen counter, and was about to step onto a hot stove. You would have only few seconds to act. In situations like this, your brain reads the signals from your eyes and quickly calculates when, where and at what speed you need to run to save her. Then it tells your muscles to move. No computer can match your brain's great ability to download, process, and react to the flood of information from your eyes, ears and other sensory organs.
If a bee lands on your foot, sensory neurons (感觉神经元) in your skin send this information to your brain at a speed of more than 240 kilometers per hour. Your brain then uses motor neurons (运动神经元) to send a message back to your foot: Shake the bee off quickly! Motor neurons can send this information at more than 320 kilometers per hour!
Your brain has about 100 billion tiny cells: neurons — it would take you more than 3,000 years if you tried to count them all. Whenever you dream, laugh, think, see or move, tiny chemical and electrical signals are racing between these neurons along billions of tiny neuron pathways. Believe it or not, the activity in your brain never stops. Countless messages fly around inside it every second, like a super fast game of table tennis. Your neurons create and send more messages than all the phones in the entire world. And although a single neuron produces only a tiny amount of electricity, all your neurons together can produce enough electricity to power a light bulb.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
The nicer their neighborhood sidewalks are, the more active people will be, according to a new study from Detroit. “While a number of studies have looked at the presence of sidewalks and their association (关联) with physical activity, very few have examined the condition of the sidewalks,” said Jamila L. Kwarteng, who led the new study.
Kwarteng and her co workers studied 919 adults in poor and middle class neighborhoods in Detroit, asking them how much they exercised and how often. The researchers also walked around the neighborhoods and studied the condition of sidewalks and streets.
According to the results, people who lived near more uneven (不平坦的) sidewalks would be less active. That was especially the case for younger people. “We found that better sidewalk condition was associated with increases in physical activity among women and men,” Kwarteng said.
Kwarteng said although it's possible that sidewalk condition affects how much time people spend outside being active, it's only one way. “Another reason for the result is that people hating physical activity choose to live in neighborhoods that are run down (破旧的),” Kwarteng said. “Maybe that's because it's less expensive to live there.”
Following a neighborhood over a long time and seeing if activity levels change with sidewalk condition would be a better way of understanding how much effect the sidewalks have. “This study makes sure an association between sidewalk condition and physical activity,” Kwarteng said. “Further studies should try to explain why this is.”
Most homeowners with the freedom to choose between neighborhoods will probably pick the one in better condition. “Good living environments should be available to all people,” Kwarteng said. “Cities should implement (贯彻) policies that keep sidewalks in good condition to increase physical activity among people.”
