Charles Darwin lived an unusually quiet life. In 1842, Darwin and his wife Emma moved from London to Kent in southern England to have as little disturbance (烦扰) as possible. They already had two children then, and would go on to have eight more in the country.
Darwin had very regular (有规律的) habits. He rose early and went for a walk. After breakfast he worked in his study until 9:30 am, his most productive time of the day, and then read his letters lying on the sofa before returning to work.
At midday he would go for another walk with his dog, stopping at his greenhouse to inspect (查看) his experiments. Then he would go for another walk around an area of woodland. While walking on his “thinking path”, Darwin would consider his unsolved scientific problems.
After lunch he read the newspaper and wrote letters. His network of friends provided information from all corners of the world.
The Darwins were not very strict parents and the children were always seen running wild. Their father worked patiently to a background of playful shouts and little footsteps walking past his study door.
After dinner Darwin played backgammon (a game for two people to play) with his wife. He once wrote,“Now the result with my wife in backgammon stands like this:she... has won only 2,490 games, while I have won, hurrah (a cheer of joy or victory), hurrah, 2,795 games!”
Although he had poor health, Darwin continued to publish (出版)a lot of creative works until his final book in 1881. He died the following year, aged 73.
Rather than a quiet space in the local churchyard, which he called “the sweetest place on Earth”, Darwin was given a state funeral (国葬) in London's Westminster Abbey.

Each year on Halloween, children look forward to trick or treating (不请客就捣乱) for candies. But for some kids, eating Halloween candies can be dangerous.
That's because one out of every 13 kids in the US has a food allergy(过敏症). They are allergic to ingredients (成分) in many Halloween candies, such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, and beans. If they eat these foods, they will get sick or even die.
“I had to throw away all my candies with tears,” eight year old Conlen said. Conlen is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, and dairy. Twelve year old Kylie is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. She has been trick or treating only twice. “I brought my candies home and gave them to the neighbours,”Kylie said. “It felt terrible.”
But this year, Conlen, Kylie and other kids with food allergies will have a chance for a happy Halloween. That's because nearly 100,000 households across the US have promised to take part in the Teal Pumpkin Project (TPP), which was started last year by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). FARE is an organisation that works to improve the lives of people with food allergies. Through the project, the households agree to have non food items for trick or treaters, including trinkets (小饰品) and toys.
To take part in the project, people buy a teal (蓝绿色) pumpkin or paint a pumpkin teal and place it in front of their house. The painted pumpkins let trick or treaters know that non food items are available there. The households also add their home addresses to an online map, making it easier for trick or treaters to find them.
Kylie loves the idea. “The TPP makes Halloween fun and safe,” she said. “It makes me feel like a normal kid, and it makes everyone feel included. ”

Jeffrey Hall, a teacher of Communications from the University of Kansas (KU) , has used his research to define the exact amount of time necessary to make friends with someone. He's also found how long it will take to deepen a relationship. His new study found that it takes around 50 hours of time together to go from being someone's acquaintance to casual friend. It takes about 90 hours to go from being casual friends to friends, and more than 200 hours before considering someone a close friend or best friend.
But it isn't spending just any kind of time together that deepens a friendship—hours spent working together, for example, don't count as much as hours spent getting to know someone by hanging out, joking around, playing video games, and doing more playful activities. The study explains that these kinds of activities help us to form a deeper connection with someone. “We have to put that__time in,” Hall said. “You can't make friends without any effort.”
The results of the study come from analysis of 355 responses to an online survey from adults who said they had moved in the last six months and were looking for new friends in their new environment. Survey participants were asked about new relationships as well as hours spent together and activities they did. They were then asked to rate their resulting relationships according to one of four stages: acquaintance, casual friend, friend and close friend.
The main conclusion that Hall came to is that making close friends takes serious effort. So if you want to have some best friends, you have to know that spending time with someone is the most important thing.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say that with these robots, rescue workers will be able to have more time to save more lives during an earthquake.
This robot looking like a helicopter, is called the detector bot. It's about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions (作用) are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people stuck in an earthquake.
This robot has a high quality 360 degree panoramic (全景的) camera. It can work day and night and will also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area. Dr. Qi Juntong, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, “Unlike other automatic machines, the most important feature of this robot is that it doesn't need a distant control. We just input the information of the earthquake struck area to it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour.”
This robot has a different function — it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.
As well as a detector (探测器) that finds victims (遇难者) and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 4 meter long robot, which can work in the dark.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply device, with its 10 meter long pipe. People who are caught in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will go into production, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year.
1.What can we learn about the robot according to the passage
A.It hasn't been put into production so far.
B.It is a machine with a length of 10 meters.
C.It is a machine carried by a helicopter.
D.It weighs about 30 kilos.
2.Why did Dr. Qi Juntong think this robot is different from the others
A.It has more functions.
B.It has a more advanced camera.
C.It can change as the environment changes.
D.It can work by itself once given the information.
3.What is the passage mainly about
A.The appearance of the robot.
B.An introduction to the robot.
C.The reason for making the robot.

It was my first full time job as a teacher in a high school in Riverside, California, The Department Chair told me that I would teach a class Introduction to Writing, a freshman course. I felt very confident.
It was my first class. When I entered the classroom, I was surprised. Freshmen These kids looked too tall and mature (成熟的) to be freshmen! I still didn't have a class list of names, so I started by talking with them and asking questions. They took notes and everything was fine until I noticed a tall boy eating a piece of cake. Rule 1, clearly written on the board was “NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASS”. I got a little mad and asked him to read the rule out aloud. He did so and he got mad too!
I asked him, “Did you understand what you read?” This made him even madder.
“Yes, I did.”
“Well, then, what were you doing just now?”
We were both getting madder and madder.
“I was eating a piece of cake.”He took another bite (咬) and looked at me angrily.
“Well, get up, go outside and throw the cake away.”
And then both of us made a mistake. He said, “Here, I don't even want it.”Then he handed it to me. He put the piece of cake on my hand. The icing of the cake went between my fingers, making a real mess. He was very tall, but he was sitting in a chair and I was standing next to him, mad and angry. I hit the cake on his hair!
The class started laughing and clapping. Somebody got up, went to the board and wrote “Teacher — 1; Mark — 0”. I didn't know whether I was supposed to laugh or not, but I couldn't help it. And then, Mark got up and left.
The story was all over the school by the next period. Some students came to me and said, “I heard that terrible things will happen if somebody tries to eat cake in your class!” Oh, how embarrassing!
Now I still teach, but I'm much better at dealing with students.
21.What did the author mean by saying “I couldn't help it” in the last but two paragraph
A.She became angry.
B.She started laughing.
C.She started crying.
D.She couldn't help the student.
22.What did the author most probably realize after that experience
A.Students can eat cake in class.

It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared (害怕的) on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stay for a little while. Let's find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the things you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it's a great day to make new friends, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!
Seeing old friends can make the first day an exciting one. You can make the day special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of shoes. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll be needing. But make sure that you pack (打包) them the night before in case you don't have time in the morning.
24.What do teachers usually do at the beginning of a new school year according to the passage

25.How do you probably feel if you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school

B.How to prepare for a new school.
C.What to do on your first day of school.
D.How to make friends on your first day of school.
27.According to the passage you usually do everything on the first day of school except “________”.
A.Introduce yourself
B.Learn about the school rules
C.Make new friends
D.Go over your new lessons

In the summer between my first year and second year in college, I was invited to be an instructor at a high school camp. On the first day, when we were dancing and playing games, I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak. I walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet some new people. He quietly replied, “No, I really don't want to do this.” I could understand that he was in a new world but I knew it wouldn't be right to force him, either. Actually, the boy didn't need a close talk but a friend.
At lunch the next day, I was leading camp songs when I saw the boy under the tree sitting alone. I tried again with the same invitation, but he refused once again. That evening I was told the boy's name was Tommy. Then I asked the campers to pay special attention to the boy and spend time with him when they could.
The days went by and the time came when we had to leave. We held a big, warm party to celebrate the closing of the camp. All the campers shared their wonderful moments. To my surprise, I found the boy from under the tree dancing joyfully with two girls. I couldn't believe it was the same person.
In October of my second year, I received a phone call from Tommy's mother. She told me that Tommy was hit by a car and killed. I offered my deep sadness. The mother said, “Tommy mentioned you so many times. I want you to know that he went back to school and made new friends with confidence. You made a difference for Tommy during his last months.”
At that moment, I realized how easy it was to give a bit of yourself every day. You may never know how much each gesture may mean to someone else. I hope that everyone can pay attention to their own “boy under the tree”.

④The boy's mother made a phone call to the writer.

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we sit while we're eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we're watching TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.
New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.
However, Mr. Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often “We can't throw away physical activity. It's extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”
Mr. Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率) or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of them, actually five or six now, in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one point four years to life.
Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they are working . Another new design is called the “treadmill desk.” A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving. That's one of the strategies that many companies are using now.
Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.
32.The underlined word “ubiquitous” is the closest in meaning to ________.
A.dangerous B.awkward C.comfortable D.common
33.Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katzmarzyk
A.Sitting too long may help increase one's life.
B.Exercise is important, but so is not sitting.
C.Watching TV is bad, but can broaden one's horizons.
D.Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.
34.What does Mr. Katzmarzyk think of his study in Paragraph 4
A.It's a relatively new area of study.
B.It's a hot subject studied by experts.
C.It's a study that begins too late.
D.It's ignored by many experts.
35.Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more
A.To give them more comfort.
B.To improve their work efficiency.
C.To offer them the chance to exercise.
D.To seek pleasure while working.

One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding Dong! Ding Dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up my brother's hands but I tied it in a special way so he could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but line was dead.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn't get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and said, “It looks like you've got a problem.”
“I'm afraid so. I'm in a big hurry and I can't start my car.”
“Is there anything I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you're sure it wouldn't be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I'd be glad to help.”The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I'm the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

Ideas of making the first week of high school easy
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day of high school. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don't know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It's best to learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled (家中教学) all through middle school and didn't really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I'm not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you'll get used to it. Don't be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen (高年级学生) will pick on you more if you let them know you're afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it's really not bad at all. Don't worry.

Oh! I looked at her for a few moments, wondering how I got into this mess (困境), when suddenly an idea came to me.
Picking up two baskets from the living room, I explained, “When everyone is born, he or she has a little basket, This little one here is yours. The big one is mine. As you grow,so does the basket. You can see your little basket is inside mine because when you were born, there were too many things you couldn't do for yourself. I did everything you couldn't do on your own.”
She nodded.
“Well, as you grew older and began to do some things on your own, I began placing a few more things in your basket. When you learned to tie your shoes, that went in your basket.”
She said softly, “I can tie my own shoes.”
“Right. As you grow older, there will be more and more things you must do on your own.” As I spoke, I gradually took her basket out of mine and handed it to her. “You will finally carry your own basket with things only you can do.”

My name is Lwazi Nzimande. I started my schooling at Thukeyana Primary Farm School in Underberg, KwaZulu Natal.
I had a favourite teacher in primary school. Her name was Miss Dube. She taught me natural science and human social sciences in Grade Six and Seven, and had a way of pushing learners to be able to think for themselves. She made sure that each and every learner took part in every lesson. She used pictures, diagrams (图表) and other things to make learning easier and more unforgettable, moving at a pace that was suitable for all students. As a teacher, she showed patience, respect, open mindedness, and reliability (可靠性). Now you see why she was my favourite teacher in primary school, don't you
In my opinion, patience, respect, open mindedness, and reliability are some of the things that all teachers should have and show. A patient teacher is one who understands that some learners need more explanation than others to understand something in class. He or she should always be willing to help learners. An open minded teacher will go beyond what is found in the textbook. A teacher who is respected will find it easy to control a class. Respect is earned through what a teacher says to learners or how he or she deals with them in general.
Miss Dube often told us not to bad mouth or make fun of others. She also did so. She never bad mouthed other teachers in front of us. Also, Miss Dube never made fun of her learners. She thought making fun of learners in front of others would hurt them and damage their confidence.
Miss Dube was also very honest. From my point of view, that's also what a good teacher should be like. If she didn't have an answer to a question, she would let her learners know. This set a good example to the learners.

Researchers in Australia, who studied 1,500 people and their lifestyles, have found that having good friends can help you live longer. An American study of 10,000 students, over a period of 35 years, also found that if you make more friends than the average (普通的) person at school, you'll receive a higher salary (工资) in later life. People need good social skills at work to manage people and work in a team successfully. These are the same skills we use to make friends at school.
On average, teenagers aged between 15 and 17 have 500 “friends” on their favourite social networking site. Adults (成年人) have 130. So if you believe this research, you might live for a long time and be very rich.
However, according to Professor Robin Dunbar from the University of Oxford, it probably won't make any difference. Dunbar studied the number of messages between users of a popular social networking website, each of whom had between 200 and 2,000 friends. He found that they always communicate with a maximum (最大量) of 150 people.
Among these 150, Dunbar believes that around five people are close friends. You've most likely known them for a long time; they are probably old friends and you share all your good and bad experiences with them. Then there are ten more friends. Although they're close to you, you may not keep in touch with them every week. Next there are 35 people who you might spend time with because of a shared interest. You aren't close. And finally, there's a large group of 100. You see or speak to these people at least once a year, but you don't know them well. Beyond (超过) this__number,__Dunbar says, it's impossible to make any relationship meaningful.
If you have a lot of online “friends”, try this experiment: First take away anyone you haven't been in touch with for a year. Then remove people you can't remember and, finally, take away friends who you wouldn't mind losing touch with. How many do you have left How many of these people are actually good friends According to the research, these are the only people that really matter.
28.What are the studies mentioned in the first paragraph mainly about
A.The number of friends you should have.
B.The advantages of having a lot of friends.
C.Some social skills you may need at work.
D.Some useful advice on how to make friends.
29.According to the American study, the most popular students at school ________.
A.are likely to spend more money
B.may not be as popular at work
C.seem to get better paid jobs
D.will work harder in later years
30.What does the underlined part “this number” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.10. B.35. C.100. D.150.
31.What does the text mainly want to show
A.You need to spend more time with your friends.
B.There is a lot of research on the influence of friends.
C.Friends are sometimes more important than family.
D.It's more important to have good friends than lots of friends.
D
The Internet has become part of teenage life. There's a report on 3,375 students aged from 10 to 18 in seven Chinese cities. It says that 38% of them believe they use the Internet often. While most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, some are not using it in a good way. Many are playing online games too much. A few even visit Web sites they should not look at. Bad things can happen if young people spend too much time on the Internet.
In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook on good Internet behavior has started to be used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. It uses real examples to teach students all about good ways of using the Internet. Some students also make online friends. But if you are meeting a friend offline, let your parents know.
Teachers and parents all think the book is a very good idea. It will teach students how to be a good person in the online world. It will be a guide for teens using the Internet and keep students away from bad sites.
32.The underlined word “it” means ________?
A.the book B.the report C.the Internet D.information
33.How many students between 10 to 18 years old in the seven cities use the Internet often
A.3,375. B.1,280. C.2,100. D.2,800.
34.What do most of the students do on the Internet
A.They get useful information to help in their studies.
B.They play online games.
C.They make online friends.
D.They buy online sometimes.
35.Why do teachers and parents think the book is a good idea

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
School is a great new adventure for most children, and play is one of the keys to working out how to get along with others and how to fit in. It's also central to your child's overall development.
Your child will grow and develop a lot at 6 9 years. You can help this process just by playing with your child.
For example, play and games with simple rules can help your child get used to the more formal learning structures that she'll experience at school. This kind of play also teaches your child about taking turns, which is important for making and keeping friends.
At this age, your child might develop new hobbies and interests through play. For example, your child might start to read more and really enjoy books and magazines about things that interest him — motorbikes, horses and more. These kinds of activities encourage your child to keep following his own interests and learn for himself.
When it comes to play and your school age child, keep the focus on having a good time, rather than on learning. Let your child take the lead with play and learn some experiences naturally when play is fun.
Even though your child will probably enjoy the new adventure of school, she'll still need your guidance and support to deal with any worries or concerns that come up. Playing with your child will help keep the lines of communication open.
Playing with your child can keep you close, especially as your child gets older and starts to enjoy being independent. By nine years, your child might have formed special friendships with one or two other children, probably of the same gender (性别). These friends might be very important to your school age child but your child still needs you, your support and love. Playing with your child — like kicking a footy in the backyard or cooking together — can help to strengthen your relationship.

Ⅵ.阅读理解
An earthquake is one of the most common natural calamities. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile (易碎的) items, like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire outbreaks during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in debris (碎片), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself. Do not move about or kick up dust.

A trip to Paris is not complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. To get the most out of your visit read our tips below:
Visit at Night
Riding up the Eiffel Tower at night and looking out over the streets of Paris, you'll see why Paris is known as the “City of Light”. At street level, the spotlights on the top of the Tower and reflections (倒影) of the Tower in the Seine (塞纳河) are sights not to be missed.

Avoid the long ticket lines at the Eiffel Tower by purchasing your ticket online from the Eiffel Tower website.
You'll pick a time to visit and then select whether to print out the ticket or display it on your phone or iPad — a convenient choice if you buy your ticket in Paris without a printer.
Don't Bring Valuable Objects with You
Before entering the Eiffel Tower, Your bags will be examined by a security officer. If an item you are carrying sets off the metal detector, the officer will take you away from the line for further inspection. Probably you will miss the chance to go up the Eiffel Tower.

“Smile!” I shouted, holding a yellow sign up on a busy street in Seattle. We are three thousand miles away from home on a Random Acts of Kindness and Volunteerism Road Trip. We had two aims. One was to try out our new “Smile!” signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread in Pike Place Market. The other was to raise $80 by doing street performances, enough for gas to Portland and a small hotel room.
We weren't sure how people would react to our signs. I nervously raised up our signs and shouted, “Hi, there!” to a young couple. They looked over and felt confused. Then they read our signs and broke into a smile. Before long, some tourists wanted to take a photo with us and some strangers stopped to ask us about our signs.
In fact, we paid so close attention to our “Smile!” project that we forgot the other aim. Before we knew it, the sun was setting, and we had no money for our trip to Portland. We sat down to watch a blind musician play the guitar while thinking about what to do. He was packing up when a passing crowd kicked down his change bowl. He stumbled (绊倒) into the crowd. We rushed to help him, but another man moved more quickly to help him.
Once the musician had his money safely returned, we ran over to meet the strange helper and said, “We just wanted to praise you for your good deed.” He smiled, looking at our signs. “Your trip reminds me of something similar I once did when I was young,” he said, “Look! I'd like to donate (捐赠).” We told him, “No, thanks! We are fine. We've collected plenty of money.” We lied. “Please let me donate. It will make me feel like I'm a part of this adventure,” he insisted. And then the stranger opened his wallet and pulled out four $20 bills. The money was exactly what we had intended to raise that day. We were astonished. It seemed as if he had known somehow.
24.What's the main purpose of the road trip
A.To spread kindness and joy.
B.To invite more people to join in the trip.
C.To raise money for a trip to Portland.
D.To encourage people to take happy photos.
25.How did people react to the “Smile!” signs later
A.Disappointed. B.Worried. C.Interested. D.Moved.
26.According to the last paragraph, why did the strange helper want to donate money
A.Because he felt pity for the author.
B.Because he wanted to join in the project.
C.Because he hoped to help the homeless.
D.Because he felt sorry for his impoliteness.
27.What does the underlined word “astonished” in the last paragraph most probably mean
A.Tired. B.Satisfied. C.Frightened. D.Surprised.
C
Being in the school's science lab can be exciting, because you're doing something different from sitting at your desk listening to your teacher. But fun as lab work is, you have to observe the safety rules if you don't want to hurt yourself or your lab partner.
The first rule is to behave responsibly in the laboratory at all times. When your teacher is showing you lab equipment, listen to what he is telling you, because some of the equipment can be dangerous. Become familiar with your lab assignment (任务) before you start doing it. This means reading everything the teacher has written down and asking questions if you don't understand an instruction or a term. Do not try to work alone. If your partner is absent, let your teacher know so she can assign another student to work with you. And don't do any other experiments other than what you have been assigned. Wear your lab apron (围裙) and safety goggles (护目镜) whenever you are working on a lab assignment. On lab days, wear old clothing that you won't mind getting damaged. Make sure this clothing covers as much of your skin as possible. Keep your hands away from your skin, face, eyes and mouth when you are working with dangerous chemicals. You will be working with fire in the lab with an alcohol lamp. Use gloves when handling hot lab equipment. If you have long hair, pull it back in a ponytail (马尾辫) and roll up long sleeves. Don't put paper, chemicals, lab equipment or any part of your body in the flame. When you use a sharp instrument, treat it with care. Do not point it at yourself or any one of your fellow classmates during the experiment.

Laptop (便携式) computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains, airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork at anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110 year old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the more important of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to the computer lab. They can work with it at home, in a fast food restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all.
Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptops used in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries, and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are testing laptop programs at other universities as well.
At Westlake college, more than 60 percent of the staff use the computers. The laptops will allow teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we are giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

The cheerful girl, Jenny, with golden hair was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw a necklace of shining white pearls in a pink metal box. Quickly the mother checked the back of the little metal box and then looked back into the begging blue eyes of her little girl's upturned face. “A dollar and ninety five cents. That's almost $2. If you really want it, I'll think of some extra housework for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy it for yourself. Besides, you might get another dollar bill from Grandma on your birthday a week away.”
After dinner back home, she did more housework and even she asked the neighbor for housework for ten cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at least she had enough money to buy the cheap necklace from the dime store (廉价商店).
Jenny loved her pearl necklace. She wore it everywhere. The only time she took it off was when swimming.
Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, “Do you love me?”
“Oh, daddy. You know that I love you.”
“Then give me your necklace.”
“Oh, daddy, not my pearl necklace. But you can have my Barbie doll — the one you gave me. She's my favorite.”
“That's okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night.” And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.
Daddy repeated the same request about a week after the story time. However, Jenny refused and wouldn't give up her necklace to her daddy.
