Three years ago, I met a little girl named Alicia. She had brown hair and big, green eyes. She looked like a normal 7-year-old girl. She had autism(自闭症), but that didn’t mean she wasn’t bright. In fact, one day proved just that.
As I walked into the room to meet with Alicia, I noticed that she was sitting in the corner alone. “Hey there Alicia! What are you doing ” She immediately looked down. I was used to this. “Thinking.” She said. “About what ” “Butterflies.” “What about them ” Then, she looked me right in the eye and said “Today I was outside looking at flowers, and I saw a butterfly. I began chasing it and finally caught it. I took it inside to show the nurse and she said, ‘Oh, honey, you have to let it go.’ I didn’t want to let it go. I was so happy I had a new friend, but the nurse said that if I didn’t let it go, it would die. I didn’t want it to die so I ran outside and let it go. I was so happy.”
After she told me her story, she put her head back down. I felt a tear. I couldn’t believe that a 7-year-old girl with autism taught me about a life lesson. Happiness can be found in everyone and everything.
I later found out that she moved to a different hospital. Her mother died of cancer. After her mother died, her father couldn’t handle an autistic child. Later he abandoned(抛弃) her. I was so heartbroken about this that I quickly took action to find her.
Five years later, I have a 12-year-old daughter with brown hair and big, green eyes. Her name is Alicia. I had found her after years of hope, loss, and just luck. She is my butterfly in life.

The Chinese saying goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This is what the Seattle-based FareStart does. Not only does the charity(慈善机构) provide meals for the homeless but it also teaches them cooking skills that prepare them for jobs in food service.
In Seattle, 13.2% of people live below the poverty line. Since its beginning in 1999, FareStart has grown steadily, graduating 110 people from its adult cooking training program in 2013, 90% of whom went on to well-paid employment(职业)within 90 days of graduation. 88% of those employees still held their positions six months later.
At FareStart, students begin their training with simple tasks like reading recipes(菜谱) and planning menus. Many also receive housing. In return, they are required to work. Starting with assisting in the kitchen preparing meals for people in shelters, the trainees move their way up the ranks, ending up in the kitchen of the FareStart restaurant in downtown Seattle.
The practical skill-training and other support services allow successful graduates like Jayna, a former nurse who lost her license due to drug and alcohol abuse, to get on in life. Since graduating from FareStart, she has worked in a small house at Yellowstone National Park. “I could not have put myself back together again,”she said.“FareStart did that for me.”
Kevin, who graduated from FareStart in April 2012, is another success story. Previously homeless, he found that having to show up at the same place every day kept him on track. Upon leaving FareStart, Kevin began setting goals for his future and seeing them through — including holding down his current job for almost a year.
Going forward, FareStart plans to shift more focus to women, particularly women with children, who sadly make up an increasing percentage of the local homeless population. The organization also aims to double its student intake when it makes a gradual move to a bigger space in Seattle’s Pacific Tower.

27. What would be the best title for the text

But while the constant repetition(重复)might be boring for mum or dad, it is the best way for toddlers (初学走路的孩子) to learn new words, according to a research.
The findings suggest parents are wasting money by spending a lot of money on huge book collections in the hope that they will inspire their children.
Instead, a small selection of favorites such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Gruffalo will achieve far more.
Dr Jessica Horst of the University of Sussex's Word Lab carried out an experiment to check how quickly three-year-olds could recognize and recall(记起) six new words.
The children were visited three times in a week at their homes. One group heard the same story three times back-to-back each time and another was read three different stories. All had the same amount of new words which appeared the same number of times.
When researchers returned a week later, they found the children who heard the same story over and over had typically(通常)learned 3.6 of the new words.
Those who heard different stories remembered only 2.6. They also noted the ‘repetition’ group learned at a faster rate than those in the ‘variety’ group.
Dr Horst said: “We are showing that less is more, to a point(在某种程度上). Obviously, the more times you read to a child and the more books you have will help them. But you don't need to go crazy and buy every single Thomas the Tank Engine book. Reading the same books over and over again helps.”
Previous(以前的) studies have found parents spend just 49 minutes doing things with their children each day. One in three don’t read to their children before putting them to bed at night. Yet 30 minutes of one-on-one literacy (一对一的读写能力) activities can improve reading age by nearly two years in less than five months.
28. Why do some parents buy lots of books for their children
A. They have got a lot of money.
B. Those books will be good for children.
C. Huge book collections will be cheap.
D. Children don’t like a small selection.
29. What can we conclude from the experiment
A. The variety group learned fewer words.
B. The repetition group read more stories.
C. The variety group recalled words quickly.
D. The repetition group learned more slowly.
30. What do we know from the last paragraph
A. Parents needn’t spend time with their children.
B. 30 minutes of reading activities is useless.
C. Reading age depends on children’s night activities.
D. Reading to children each night is helpful for reading age.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Repetition Group and the Variety Group.
B. Why Should Parents Buy Huge Book Collections
C. The Best Way to Help Children Learn New Words.
D. Thirty Minutes of One-on-one Reading Activities.

My daughter and myself were driving from Los Angeles to Dallas. We were running low on gas on our way to Roswell and figured we'd see a gas station soon enough to fill up. But that didn't happen and we realized we were not going to make it to the next town. So my daughter made up a sign that read "Low on gas. Can u help " and held it outside her window hoping that a driver in the next lane (车道) would notice it and stop.
It was about 3:30 pm and there weren't too many vehicles passing us. An SUV was driving along in the neighboring lane ahead of us. We caught up with it in the hope that the driver would notice the sign. An elderly gentleman was driving it and after a brief expression of confusion on his face, he seemed to have noticed the sign and slowed down to pull over.
He was friendly and was eager to help us. At first he thought we didn't have enough money to buy gas, so he offered to buy us gas at the next town Roswell that was about 10 miles away!! When we explained our situation of not having enough gas to get to Roswell, he said he worked on a farm and was returning home from work. The farm was about 10 minutes away and they had a gas pump there. So if we could give him twenty minutes, he would head back there, get gasoline and fill up our tank (油箱).
We could not believe our good fortune! We had just hoped that whoever stopped to help would be kind enough to call AAA when they got to Roswell as there was no cell phone for either of us. And we would just wait it out for them to come and help us.
We were grateful for the kindness of strangers such as this person as we waited for him to return. Sure enough, he was back and immediately filled our tank. He refused to take payment for the gas saying “what good is a man who cannot help another in need”. Tears flowed, as did our gratitude.
32. What happened when we were halfway to Dallas
A. Our car broke down. B. My wife made a call.
C. We were short of petrol. D. We saw a gas station.

A. filled up our tank for free
B. was paid for the help
C. went to Roswell for the gas
D. felt moved as tears flowed.

A. I made a sign in hope of finding help.
B. The stranger offered us gas in the gas station.

D. My daughter and I didn’t take cell phones.
35. Which of the following can be the best title
