People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing(区分) facial expressions—and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀地)across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect(忽视) the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex(复杂) than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian(白种人) and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors(错误) than did Westerners. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
28. The discovery shows that Westerners __________.
A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth B. consider facial expressions universally reliable
C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
29. What were the people asked to do in the study
A. To make a face at each other. B. To get their faces impressive.
C. To classify some face pictures. D. To observe the researchers’ faces.
30. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to
A. The participants in the study. B. The researchers of the study.
C. The errors made during the study. D. The data collected from the study.
31. In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to .
A. do translation more successfully B. study the mouth more frequently
C. examine the eyes more attentively D. read facial expressions more correctly

Recently Google has announced a series of new artificial intelligence(Al) (人工智能) tools designed to help users in organizing emails and creating business writings and meetings. These tools display important AI development progress in recent years. The tools are built by putting a great deal of data(数据) into machine learning computer systems. The data trains the AI systems to develop skills and produce human-like results.
The technology received wide attention last year after a company called OpenAI announced a free writing tool called ChatGPT. That tool can quickly produce human-quality writings. Experts say such systems may bring great changes to many different industries and jobs. Now some companies are able to test Google’s new tools in their development and business activities.
Like ChatGPT, Google’s AI tools are designed to create completely written texts for many different purposes. For example, an office worker could enter some keywords of a kind of text they want. The tools could then create a full marketing email, training materials or a business plan in a while. Google sees the system being able to offer an“AI Helper” to help human workers in real time. Google wants to have its AI change the work of lawyers, scientists, teachers and more.
However, Google says it keeps developing AI products of high quality. That is why the company is inviting groups of “trusted testers to use its AI tools rather than widely selling its new products. Google’s new AI tools are the company’s latest move to fight for panies like Microsoft and Meta are also working on products about AI.
Technology experts have warned that while the new AI tools can produce human-like writings, the systems can also make mistakes.
Last month, Bard, Google's new AI tool designed to give a better online search, made a mistake and caused a $100-billion drop. Microsoft users said the company's new AI tools produced unfriendly and rude results.

The English language has many ways to talk about something that is funny. 36 It is a basic human need. Physical humour, especially, can cross limits like nationality and language and bring people together from all different walks of life.
Humour comes in many forms. The most obvious and traditional way we use humour is in jokes. 37 This is when a person changes a word or uses it in a different context(上下文) for comic effect.
Another way people can use humour is through telling a funny story. Perhaps something bad happened to the person but they can laugh about it now. People also invent funny stories in order to make people laugh. The advantage of this is that the characters aren't real. 38
Physical comedy usually divides opinions. For some, seeing someone fall down, whether it is planned or not, is one of the funniest things they can see. 39 Some types of humour can also be harmful if someone is not in the mood for being made fun of! People's senses of humour vary across the world, so what may be funny in your country might be incredibly harmful in another!
40 The British, for instance, are famous for their humour in English. However, people learning a foreign language face much difficulty when it comes to being funny in a second language.
A. Humour is just one of the ways.
B. Everyone needs to laugh once in a while.
C. Other forms of humour are word play and puns(双关语).
D. Therefore, you don't have to feel bad for laughing at them!
E. People of all ages and cultures have a strong sense of humour.

The darkness was gathering as she wobbled(颤颤巍巍) in high heels(高跟鞋) along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of get out and walk.
It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.
The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. “Maybe he will stop,” she hoped. The brake lights(刹车灯) flashed on as it stopped. Next moment, the car door opened. A wordless invitation was extended and she understood. Without hesitation, the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door. Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.
I woke up in a cold sweat, frightened. Was it a dream or was it a vision It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.
I stood in horror trying to think why she hadn't come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30 a. m. , but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.
“Hello ” The voice was heavy with sleep.
“Hey. Sorry to wake you. Becki didn't come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place.”
“No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!” The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.
Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.
At 2:15 a. m. lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter's car.

M: That's good, because it looks like we can't move more than a few feet per minute now! The traffic is terrible.

Now I'm going to tell you something about my experience of taking the video ten years ago. It was 2:00 in the afternoon. When I entered the classroom, I was surprised to see a video camera. Our class teacher was operating the camera, and my classmates were all talking among themselves quietly. Most of us had never been in front of a video camera before, so we were quite nervous. As for myself, I had once faced one at home. My uncle was shooting when we were celebrating my sister's birthday. But this was completely different. We had to talk about our articles as if We were reading the news on TV. The funny thing was that every time I tried to face the camera and talk about my article, I forgot the article and had to keep looking down at it. It was a completely different experience for me, thanks to our class teacher.

My face pressed against the window and found it was hard to breathe. The car pulled in front of the house, out of it emerged my precious daughter, making her way up the steps. Tears stinging my eyes, I threw open the door, pulled her inside and hugged her tightly. The dream was just too real and I could hardly believe I was now having my daughter in my hug. I wondered if it was because my pray was answered. Then through my blurred vision I saw a lady stepping out of the car.
“Mom, she gave me a ride home.” Becki said. “My car broke down on the highway and if she hadn't given me a ride, I would have to go home in my high heels at midnight.” she continued, exposing her blistered ankles. My heart shuddered at the thought of what panic she experienced when she walked alone along the dark highway at night. She must be an angel for Becki! I approached the lady and invited her inside. Now, I was definitely grateful to her for extending a helping hand.
