The University of Miami’s newest hospital has a six-bed emergency room (急诊室), operating room, a birthing room and outpatient clinics.
The only thing missing is patients. Instead, nursing students get a realistic clinical experience using computerized patients and staff actors.
“Practicing on real people can be a frightening environment, and as our patients may be unwilling to accept treatment when a student walks in,” said Susana Barroso-Fernandez, who oversees UM’s simulation (模拟) program. “We created this environment to allow students to practice and make mistakes and never put a patient or student at risk.”
UM’s Simulation Hospital is part of a growing trend of colleges building simulation centers to provide real-life experiences to munity colleges and schools also use simulators for emergency medical technician (技师) and medical assistant programs.
A 2020 study by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing found that colleges could use simulation to replace up to half of all clinical experience without any bad results. The students scored as well on nursing license exams as those getting most of their experience in hospitals and health care centers. Officials say they think simulation has helped their students achieve nearly perfect passing rates on the exams.
There are major advantages of simulation. In addition to giving students a safe environment to practice in, it also gives students experience with conditions that are rare, but still important for them to know how to deal with.
The Simulation Hospital will also be used as a training place for people outside of UM, officials said.
“You can bring companies in that want to test new products before they go to market,” Barroso-Fernandez said. “You can work with community partners like police and fire departments. You can take this hospital and turn it into a casualty (伤亡) event and have the community practice disaster preparedness and response. It’s not just about nursing education.”
24. What is special about the new hospital
A. There are no real patients.
B. It is comfortable and patient-friendly.
C. There are plenty of clinics.
D. It has modern services and expert doctors.

Throughout history scientists have risked their health and their lives in their search for the truth.
Sir Isaac Newton, the seventeenth century scientist, was very smart, but that didn't stop him from doing some pretty stupid things. In his laboratory in Cambridge he often did the strangest experiments. Once, while testing how light passes through lenses (晶状体), he put a long needle into his eye, pushed it to the back, and then moved it around just to see what would happen. Luckily, nothing long-lasting did. On another occasion he stared at the sun for as long as he could bear, to discover what effect this would have on his sight. Again he escaped suffering permanent damage, though he had to spend some days in a darkened room before his eyes recovered.
In the 1750s the Swedish chemist Karl Scheele was the first person to find a way to produce phosphorus (磷). He in fact discovered eight more chemical elements including chlorine (氯), though he didn't get any praise for them. He was a very clever scientist, but his one failing was a curious habit of tasting a little of every substance he worked with. This risky practice finally caught up with him, and in 1786 he was found dead in his laboratory surrounded by a large number of dangerous chemicals, any of which might have been responsible for his death.
Eugene Shoemaker was a respected geologist. He spent a large part of his life studying craters (火山口) on the moon, and how they were formed, and later did research into the comets of the planet Jupiter. In 1997 he and his wife were in the Australian desert where they went every year to search for places where comets (彗星) might have hit the earth. While driving in the Tanami desert, normally one of the emptiest places in the world, another vehicle crashed into them and Shoemaker was killed on the spot. Some of his ashes were sent to the moon aboard the Lunar Prospector spacecraft and left there — he is the only person who has had this honor.
28. What does the underlined word “permanent” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Brief. B. Slight. C. Lasting. D. Ordinary.
29. What did Karl Scheele like doing when performing experiments
A. Tasting chemicals. B. Staying in the empty lab.
C. Experimenting in darkness. D. Working together with others.
30. What special honor was Shoemaker given after his death
A. He was buried in the Tanami desert.
B. One comet of Jupiter was named after him.
C. Some of his ashes were placed on the moon.
D. A spacecraft carrying him traveled around Jupiter.
31. The text is mainly about three great scientists' _____.
A. suffering in the job B. great achievements
C. famous experiments D. special honors

Kimberly Arcand, a visualization scientist for NASA(美国航天局), has made it her life's work to help tell the stories of space. Having authored several astrophysics nonfiction books over the years, Arcand recently turned her attention to children’s books. She released Goodnight Exomoon last year. An astronomical parody(模仿作品),” it takes the classic children's book Goodnight Moon and explores planetary science in a way that is readable for the very young.
The idea, Arcand says, was born when her own children refused to sleep “I would read for hours to try to get them to go to sleep and they loved Goodnight Moon. One day I could not imagine reading Goodnight Moon again so I started creating stories based on it,”says Arcand. She wrote down one of the versions of her playful parody, and then put it in a drawer where it stayed for nearly a decade.
Then, in 2018, scientists found what they believed was the first exomoon orbiting the exoplanet known as Kepler-1625b. “With that first exomoon candidate, it reminded me that I had written the story”says Arcand. So,the scientist pulled her would-be book out of the drawer and brought it to life.
“In the great telescope room there was a telephone, an atmospheric balloon, and a picture of a satellite flying by the moon…” begins the story setting readers in a room that houses a huge telescope. The story goes on to introduce children to some of the more modern tools that astronomers use, like accelerometers, micrometers and satellites teaching them about astronomical objects like comets and exomoons
Arcand hopes the book will excite “space fans”, and that it will inspire children and especially young girls to see the field of science as one that is approachable. This desire drives Arcand’s scientific work as well. When not penning parodies, Arcand spends her time making complex concepts and theories more accessible to a variety of audiences, from fellow researchers to students and the general public.
32. What do we know about Goodnight Exomoon
A. It is a classic astrophysics nonfiction book.
B. It is a continuation of Goodnight Moon.
C. It is produced by NASA.
D. It is accessible to young readers.
33. What motivated Arcand to write Goodnight Exomoon
A. The discovery of Kepler-1625b
B. The lack of science books for children.
C. Her great love for the book Goodnight Moon.
D. Her experience of reading bedtime stories to her kids.
34. What can readers learn from Goodnight Exomoon
A. History of moon exploration B. Tools for space exploration.
C. Stories of famous astronauts. D. Possibilities for space travel
35.What does Arcand devote herself to doing
A. Giving training to female scientists.
B. Spreading knowledge of space.
C. Inspiring more researchers to pen books
D. Recommending more books to space fans

Time is on Your Side
How frequently do you say “I don't have time” Quite often, I guess. Every time we say those words, they make us feel weak and out of control. You are in control of your hours and your life. 36
I know it's not as easy as simply turning off the TV. But here are two steps that will help you take back control and get time on your side.
★ 37
Be honest: do you spend an hour or two visiting Weixin and QQ every day Are you spending time with people that you don't really like just to please them Are there meetings you attend that you can politely refuse
It's time to get real about the hours that add up to a lot of dissatisfying nothing. Think how you can cancel daily activities that are not useful. 38
★Change your language.
Words matter. They have power. Saying “I don't have time” is an excuse for not wanting to do something. Here are some good, empowering alternatives:
“I choose to start it right now.”
“ 39 ”
“I'd love to go out this weekend but have important work I need to do first.”
Get better at saying no. 40 Use little pockets of time (friend running late, car stuck in traffic, meeting ending 10 minutes early) to do some productive thinking. All these things can add up over time more than you believe!
A. But you are likely wasting a lot of it!
B. Identify your blocks.
C. I really don't have enough time to do it.
D. Replace them with things that satisfy you.
E. I'd love to read that book — I'll get to it after my homework is complete!
F. Take no notice of all those unimportant messages on your phone.
G. When you don't have a plan for your life, someone else will plan it for you.

Mom and I walked side by side through the town. I was twelve years old, and dependent on her. She raised me by herself, and except for when I was at school, we were almost always together.
She was a nurse, but after my birth she quit her job to care for me. It was said that she was once one of the best nurses in a big local hospital. Recently she had returned to work there. She said she wanted to spend more time being with me, but she couldn't.
I didn’t like her going back to work. She left at 5: 45 am, which made me responsible for waking myself up, fixing breakfast and walking to the 7:30 am bus.
I hated being left home alone in the mornings, but I especially hated having to take the bus. Once I had missed it, I wasn’t only late to school, but I had also caused Mom to scramble to find someone else to drive me. After that. I was so worried about missing the bus that I left for the bus stop too early every day. I stood by myself before the other kids arrived, in wind rain and snow, having to bear the embarrassment when crowded by adult passengers sometimes.
Mom worked the day shift so she could pick me up after school. Every time she didn't go to the hospital, she would drive me both ways. Those were the best days.
On such a day, as we walked on the sidewalk, I saw an old man coming close to us. When he saw us, he suddenly showed a wide smile, but I didn't recognize him. "Leigh! Leigh! "he said, calling my mother's name. My mother also greeted him cheerfully. He asked me whether I was the daughter of my mom. I said “yes”. I didn’t know him and just looked at him, unsure of my role. "Well, it is very nice to meet you, young lady. I hope you know how lucky you are!” he said.

读后续写
Paragraph 1: Not knowing why he said so, I looked at him uncertainly. He didn’t know my situation at all, and how could he say that I didn’t think I was lucky at all. I was unhappy with his words. The man sensed that, but just smiled and patted me on the head tenderly. He told me that when he was in hospital, helpless and alone last month, it was my mom that took the best care of him. He said Mom made every day better for him, and that he would never forget her help.
Paragraph2: Mom said there was no need to thank her, but the man insisted. I looked into the strangers which were filled with gratitude to Mom. I was greatly moved. Right then, I realized what it meant for my mom to be a nurse, and what it actually meant for her to be busy with her job while I was at school. She was serving, caring for, and loving unfamiliar strangers, often during some of the darkest times in their lives. It was the first time that I had understood why I stood at the bus stop every morning.

Get better at saying no和Use little pockets of time可知,作者建议你忽略掉手机上那些不重要的信息,利用零散时间想一想有益的事。
