To know the usage of to-infinitive, -ing and -ed as predicative and use them correctly
To use compound adjectives correctly
目标一:To know the usage of to-infinitive, -ing and -ed as predicative and use them correctly
Activity 1: Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the question.
a Every artist’s wish is to create something that expresses an idea.
b He was particularly interested in the old story about a fish jumping through the “Dragon Gate”.
c Yang Liping’s passion is dancing.
1 Apart from nouns and adjectives, what other word forms can serve as predicative
2 Can “interested” in sentence (b) be replaced by “interesting”
Why or why not
Apart from nouns and adjectives, to-infinitive, -ing and -ed can serve as predicative.
No, it can’t. Because “interested” usually indicates a person’s interest in something while “interesting” usually indicates something making a person interested. In sentence (b), the subject is “he”, which refers to a person.
Now look for more sentences with these structures in the reading passage, and summarise their uses in your own words.
1 One way for him to find inspiration is turning to his children’s toys.
2 He is most widely known for composing music for the film...
3 To listen to Tan’s music is to experience a mix of Chinese musical traditions and Western influences.
Activity 2: Analyse the groups of sentences. Summarise the usage of to-infinitive, -ing and -ed in each group.
Group 1:
My work is to clean the room every day.
My chief purpose is to point out the difficulties of the matter.
Every artist’s wish is to create something that expresses an idea.
动词不定式作表语说明_____________________,表示具体的或将来的动作,还可以表示目的、结果、安排、命令、决求、劝告、意愿等。
当主语aim,duty,hope,idea,mistake,plan,purpose,suggestion等词或以这些词为中心词的名词词组时,动词不定式作表语表示主语的内容
主语的具体内容
【拓展】
以what引导的主语从句,不定式作表语说明主语的内容,如
What I would suggest is to put off the meeting.(建议的内容)
What I’d like to say is to treat the poor creature well. (说话的内容)
当主语和表语都是不定式时,主语表示条件,表语表示结果,如:
To be kind to the enemy is to be cruel to the people.
【注意】
一般情况下,不定式作表语不能省略。
但如果前面的主语从句中含有do时,可以省略to;如:
All I could do was wait.
由and或or等连接并列的动词不定式时,第二个(和后面的)不定式可以省略to,如:
My dream is to be an astronaut and explore the universe.
Group 2:
One way for him to find inspiration is turning to his children’s toys.
Summary:
动词的-ing form作表语用来说明______________,表示主语的某种性质或状态。当与主语是同一概念的时候,主语与表语的住置可以替换,如:
上面的例句也可以替换为:
Turning to his children’s toys is one way for him to find inspiration.
主语的内容
【注意】
-ing form作表语时句子主语常是表示无生命的事物的名词或what引导的名词性从句。-ing form与主语通常是对等的关系,表示主语的内容,主语、表语可互换位置。如果句中的主语和表语同为动词时,要注意保持两个动词在形式上的一致。如:
Your task is cleaning the windows. 你的任务就是擦窗户。
(Cleaning the windows is your task.)
Group 3:
The city is surrounded on three sides by mountains.
The library is now closed.
This was a terrible attack and the woman is still very shocked.
Summary:
动词的过去分词作表语,表示____________________。
主语的状态
【注意】
1 动词-ed form作表语和被动语态有何区别?
动词-ed form作表语通常用来描写情景、叙述人成事物的特征及所处的状态,而被动语态强调动作,重点说明动作由谁究成、怎样完成。
试比较以下两个句子∶
(1)The shop is closed now. (过去分词作表语,说明商店的状态)
(2)It was closed by the manager. (被动语态,强调动作)
此外,动词-ed form作表语时,在功能上更接近形容词,它不仅可以用于be之后,也可根据需要用于其他系动词(如seem, appear)之后,而被动语态中的过去分词动作意味较强,它只能与助动词be(有时可能是get)构成被动结构,不能用于其他动词之后。
2 -ing form和 -ed form的用法区别,-ing form修饰事物,描述事物的特征,-ed form修饰人或人的表情,心理活动等;如:
The film we saw last night was very interesting.
We were all interested in the film.
Activity 3: Read the passage and find out the predicative.
One of my biggest dreams had always been to see the painting Girl with a Pearl Earing, by the Dutch artist Vermeer. It wasn’t until we went on a trip to The Hague last year that this dream came true. There were lots of people waiting to enter the Mauritshuis. Although my legs were tired from walking around the city, I was determined to see the painting, which is
often called the “Mona Lisa of the North”. Nobody is sure of
the identity of the girl in it. And there she was. It was amazing
to be standing in front of her at last! The girl is looking over her
shoulder. Her eyes are wide and her mouth is parted, just as if
she were about to speak. I would love to know what she was
going to say!

Indeed the exhibition is worth visiting, despite the over-priced tickets. But personally, I think the inspiration for Storm might be the overwhelming amount of information in the digital age. The highly-skilled artist is voicing her attitude through the natural form of a storm.
Meimei @ meimei01 8 Nov
Check out the ground-breaking installations. The one named Superhighway is breathtaking! It is absolutely astonishing to see a superhighway world map made entirely of wires and cables. Like Storm, I think the artist is trying to state his attitude towards the digital age.

They show realism and celebrate characteristics of the individual. Rodin’s first original human sculpture was inspired by a visit to Italy in 1875. 8 During the walk and my stay here in the town,I saw the fish being fed by people.
Paraphrase:When I stayed and walked in the town,I saw people feeding the fish.
saw the fish being fed...是“动词+宾语+宾补”的结构。在该结构中,谓语动词为感官动词see,宾补的形式可以是动词原形,也可以是动词的现在分词形式,即see sb/sth do/doing sth,see sb/sth doing sth表示“看见正在做某事(或某事正在被做)",即动作正在进行。在本句中,现在分词短语 being fed by people 作the fish的补语,表示
“(鱼)正在被投食”。例如:When I entered the classroom,I saw the wall being painted.
(当我走进教室的时候,我看见墙正在被粉刷。)
9 Since his first opera, Nine Songs, Tan Dun has been using a combination of Chinese music and sounds from all over the world to tell stories.
Paraphrase: Nine Songs was Tan Dun’s first opera. From then on, he has been using a combination of Chinese music and sounds from all over the world to tell stories.
has been using是现在完成进行时形式,教师可以请学生结合上下文理解这个时态表达的意思,即动作从过去开始一直持续到现在,且还在进行中,并可能持续下去。例如:It has been raining for three days in a row. When will it stop?(已经经连续下了三天雨了,什么时候停呢?)I have been teaching for 25 years so far,and will retire in 9 years.
(到自前为止我任教已有25年了,9年后将退休。)
10 My dance comes from their traditional belief and aims to bring out the Dai women’s beauty.
Paraphrase:The Dai people’s traditional belief gives a lot of inspiration to my dance which hopes to draw people’s attention to the Dai women’s beauty.
此句中有两个并列的谓语动词comes和aims,并且时态一致,均使用一般现在时。其中,aims后接动词不定式,表示“想要做......,打算做......。bring out是固定搭配,意为to make something easier to see, taste, notice, etc.例如:The donation brought out the selflessness of the community.(本次的捐助活动体现了社区的无私精神。)此外,bring out另一个比较常用的意思,即,“推出(新产品、新书、新唱片等)”。例如:Companies are always bringing out improved versions of their products.(公司一直在不断推出改良版的产品。)
