Hidden gardens in London
From nature reserves to community space, we've dug up some of London's most secret gardens, where you'll find pockets of splendid nature and forget about all your worries.
Queen's Wood
Across the road from the better known Highgate Wood, there is something more magical and quieter about Queen's Wood—its pathways through the mountain ash and cherry trees. It might be only a few hundred metres from Highgate tube station, but native bluebells and countless species of small animals make this a wonderful retreat.
Phoenix Garden
Behind Charing Cross Road this is a super spot for a comfortable lunchtime break. Look out for frogs and sparrows, which are thriving thanks to an enthusiastic conservation initiative. The garden closed last autumn for redevelopment work but has reopened in time to take advantage of a long spell of good weather.
Postman's Park
A short walk from St Paul's Cathedral lies one of London's most touching monuments. Within the quiet Postman's Park, nestled beneath a roof, are just over 50 ceramic plaques (匾牌), each honoring the memory of an ordinary person who lost his or her life trying to save others.
Red Cross Garden
Originally intended to give Southwark children a space to play, this Victorian garden has been restored to its original design, complete with ponds, cottages, bandstands and formal borders. While relaxing in the restored bandstand, it's hard to imagine the view back in 1887 when it was surrounded by workhouses and factories.

[2023·武汉市高三模拟试题]When Michael Ford was a kid, he dreamed of being a car designer. But when he was 11, things changed. That's when he went to a car design program and ended up learning about architecture instead.
“As a youngster, I was lucky enough to have some conversations with the people running that summer program,” he told TimeforKids. Talking with designers there stimulated Ford's interest in architecture. He went on to pursue it as a career.
Now Ford hopes to inspire the same interest in other young people. Last year, he launched his own architecture program for kids aged 10 to 17. But his program has an unexpected feature. Campers base their designs on hip hop lyrics. Ford's goal is to inspire a new generation of architects from underrepresented communities.“Only 4% of architects are African Americans,”he said.“Most of our buildings, most of our parks and public spaces, have all been designed by white males. If we can increase diversity, the entire world will now start to experience space from a totally new perspective.”
Ford calls his program the Hip Hop Architecture Camp. The one week camp is offered to students around the country. At the camp, students listen to and read the lyrics of hip hop songs. Then they use some of those lyrics to guide them in planning a city block. On graph paper, each square represents a word. Students build with Lego on each square based on the number of syllables (音节) in each word. In the end, they have what looks like a city skyline. Kids then use a design program called Tinkercad to transform their Lego models into 3D digital versions.
Ford believes this approach helps campers learn that architecture is about more than just construction. “The architect's Number 1 job is to serve people's needs,” he says.“Architecture plays a critical role in determining or challenging how people live in certain communities.”
4.What made Ford change his dream of being a car designer
A.Participation in a program. B.Lack of talent for car designing.
C.Desire for a more promising career. D.Conversations with architecture designers.
5.What is Ford's architecture program aimed at
A.Appealing to young people. B.Popularizing hip pop music.
C.Promoting diversity in the field. D.Connecting music with architecture.
6.If you hear “beautiful”, how many blocks would you use on the square
A.1. B.2. C.3. D.4.
7.What's Ford's opinion about architecture
A.It determines people's needs. B.It influences people's lifestyles.
C.It is just about building things. D.It is about adding more buildings.

[2023·沈阳市高三一模]Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common eye condition in which you can see objects near to you clearly, but objects farther away are blurry. To see the farther things clearly, you have the option of wearing eyeglasses, or undergoing the more invasive refractive surgery.
But Japan's Kubota Pharmaceutical Holdings Co.Ltd. claims to have developed smart glasses that, if worn just an hour per day, can cure myopia. It projects an image onto the wearers' retina (视网膜) to correct the refractive error that causes nearsightedness. Obviously, wearing the device 60 to 90 minutes a day corrects myopia.
So how does the technology developed by the company work exactly Well, according to a company press release in December of last year, the special glasses rely on micro LEDs to project virtual images on the visual field to make the retina active. Apparently, it can do that without affecting the wearer's daily activities.
Founded by Dr. Ryo Kubota, Kubota Pharmaceutical Holdings Co. Ltd. is still testing the device, known as Kubota Glass, and trying to determine how long the effect lasts after the user wears the device, and how long the ugly looking glasses have to be worn for the correction to be permanent.
Kubota Pharmaceutical Holdings Co. Ltd. began testing the glasses in the summer of last year, and is currently conducting tests on about 25 people in the U.S. to assess the effectiveness of its smart glasses. The company plans to begin selling the device in Asia in the second half of next year where there are more nearsighted people, but it has planned to enter other markets in the future.
8.What does the underlined word “blurry” mean in the first paragraph
A.Familiar. B.Different. C.Impressive. D.Unclear.
9.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about
A.The effect of wearing the smart glasses.
B.The disadvantages of the smart glasses.
C.The working principle of the smart glasses.
D.The correct way of wearing the smart glasses.
10.Why does the company decide to sell the glasses first in Asia
A.It wants to serve the Asians better. B.These glasses are more suitable for Asians.
C.Scientific development is slower in Asia. D.There is more market demand in Asia.
11.What is the purpose of writing the text
A.To solve a problem. B.To introduce a new product.
C.To present a research result. D.To give practical advice.

[2023·长春市高三质量监督]Summer's here and it won't be long before school aged kids across America start complaining that they're tired of riding their bikes, playing at the park, swimming in the pool...and all the other awesome activities their parents hope would keep them entertained for the next 10 weeks.
Such rapid onset boredom could indicate that the kids have amazing powers of recall. A new study shows that the better your short term memory is, the faster you feel bored and decide you've had enough. The findings appear in the JournalofConsumerResearch.“Though boredom can be physical, like when you feel full after eating too much, we were interested in the psychological side of boredom, like when you're just tired of something.” Noelle Nelson, assistant professor of marketing and consumer behavior at the University of Kansas School of Business, and her colleague Joseph Redden at the University of Minnesota tried to think outside the lunch box.“Something that was interesting to me is that some people get tired of the same things at very different rates. So if you think about pop songs on the radio, some people must still be enjoying them and requesting them even after hearing them a lot. But a lot of other people are really sick of those same songs.” The difference might have to do with memories of past consumption. For example, studies show that people push away from the dinner table sooner when they're asked to describe in detail what they ate earlier for lunch.
The findings suggest that marketers could use our desire for their products by figuring out ways to distract (使分心) us and keep us from fully remembering our experiences. We could also trick ourselves into eating less junk food by immersing (使沉浸) ourselves in the memory of a previous snack. As for kids easily bored, just tell them to be fogged (混淆不清的) about it—it might help them have more fun.
12.What can be learned about the rapid onset boredom from the passage
A.It is a physical reaction after lunch.
B.It is more likely to happen to children.
C.It is closely related to short term memory.
D.It occurs physically first and then psychologically.
13.How may people take advantage of the findings
A.Help kids eat more by sharing their feelings about food.
B.Recall activities' details to improve kids' memorizing ability.
C.Talk less about previous snacks to reduce junk food consumption.
D.Keep consumers from remembering experiences to promote goods.
14.How does the author make the findings easy to understand
A.By making comparison. B.By analyzing data.
C.By describing processes. D.By giving examples.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Good Memory Makes for Boredom B.How to Invent Interesting Activities
C.Boring Activities Do Harm to Kids' Memory D.Physical Boredom Affects Psychological Feelings

Every day, a lot of people move house. With newfound appreciation for space and air, it may suddenly have seemed as if a new kind of life was possible.__16__ Here's some expert advice on how to build a new community.
__17__
Ask people you already know if they could introduce you to anyone in the location to which you are moving. The posting on social media is probably the easiest way to tap your friends' friends. It increases the chance that there's someone you will get along with.
Don't expect friends to magically appear.
__18__ People really need to take the initiative to go out there and meet other people and not assume that friends are just going to fall into their lives. As people become familiar to us, we like them more, and it's completely unconscious.
Be open to a broader range of people.
You have spent a lifetime narrowing your social circle to those you really care about, but the chances are you're not going to meet new best friends in your new area instantly. When it comes to friendships, having close friends is one of the best things we can do for our health and well being. But even having brief interactions with people in general benefits us.__19__
Don't despair.
Remember to maintain pre existing friendships, so that you're not feeling lonely and disconnected while developing new relationships.__20__ But people don't realize that if they put themselves out there, the process can go faster than they think. It really makes a difference if you're willing to attend different events; you can really change your social life.

B.Put some work in before you move.
C.Quality is best, but quantity still does something.
D.It can take a long time to build up new friendships.

[2023·广州市综合测试一]Exercising regularly not only helps you keep slim, but also improves your overall health and well being. Different exercises produce different results, as they focus on different parts of the body. There are four broad exercise categories: endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance. Many people often only focus on one exercise type, but including all four in your workout will produce better results and reduce your risk of injury.
Endurance
Endurance exercises increase your breathing and heart rate. By doing endurance exercises, you are working to keep your heart, lungs, and blood flow system healthy while improving your total fitness. Over time these activities will make everyday activities seem easier.
Strength
If you want to build up your muscles, then strength exercises, which are also known as “resistance training”, are right for you. Even the slightest increase in strength can make a huge difference in your ability to carry out daily tasks. Developing strong muscles also reduces your risk of weak bones.
Flexibility
Flexibility exercises help stretch your body's muscles. This allows for more freedom of movement for other exercises and can also improve your range of motion, posture, ability to breathe deeply, and blood flow. Also, it reduces the muscle tension caused by stress.
Balance
Balance exercises help prevent falls and are especially important to older adults, helping them stay independent. Most good balance exercises are ones that keep you constantly moving with your feet on the ground. Heel to toe walking and standing on one foot are simple ways to improve balance.
1.How can a person benefit most from their exercise routine
A.By combining different exercise types together.
B.By having sufficient rest between their workouts.
C.By concentrating on one training aspect at a time.
D.By increasing the frequency of their training gradually.

[2023·武汉市高中调研考试]A mild mannered cat by day, at night Rusty was just the opposite. Often, Bill and I would lie in bed quarrelling over whether we should let it out to wander in the dark or put up with another sleepless night.
So, instead, we lay in the dark each noisy night and wondered what damage Rusty would do. And always in the morning, if I had forgotten to put the butter in the cupboard, there were marks from a rough, little tongue and once even a paw print.
Something had to give. Bill looked at me straight in the eyes, “Do it.” My reservations were such that it took me several weeks to decide because we didn't have much choice.
That night, I put Rusty on his cat bed and patted him a little guiltily on the head. Then I began filling the kitchen sink with about two inches of water. Rusty loved jumping into a damp sink and then tracking water all over the cupboards and across the kitchen floor. According to the article I saved from a website to my folder, cats used to jumping into your sink won't do it again if they jump in and find a couple of inches of water.
Next, I cleared the cupboards of everything. Then I got out all my metal cookie sheets and a fork to go with each. According to the article, you should support a cookie sheet with a fork. When your cat jumps on the counter, he will knock down the insecurely balanced cookie sheets. What happens next will stop him from doing it a second time.
Everything in place, I slipped onto our bed quietly, waiting. Suddenly, there came an awfully loud noise of metal. A chain reaction of crashes next. Finally, Rusty rounded the corner in the hall heavily and leaped through our doorway onto the foot of our bed, trembling under our cover. And that was the night Rusty, the Midnight Troublemaker, retired.
4.Which of the following best describes Rusty at night
A.Cold blooded. B.Adorable. C.Good tempered. D.Troublesome.
5.What did Bill mean by saying “Do it”?
A.To leave the cat outdoor. B.To give the cat a lesson.
C.To reserve food for the cat. D.To give the cat more butter.
6.What did the writer do before she went to bed that night
A.Filled the sink with water. B.Laid two traps for the cat.
C.Covered the counter with sheets. D.Cleaned the kitchen thoroughly.
7.How did the author probably feel about the outcome of her effort
A.Satisfied. B.Disappointed. C.Anxious. D.Regretful.

[2023·保定市高三第一次模拟考试]When clouds of radiation began streaming into the air around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, 160,000 residents were told to simply cut and run. However, it seemed only 159,998 residents listened. The other two—Naoto Matsumura and Sakae Kato—remained. The two men would give up everything rather than let other__beings starve.
Living within the 12.5 mile exclusion zone (禁区) around the damaged reactor, the two men, unrelated to one another, both live alone while taking care of dozens of animals that were left behind when the evacuation (撤离) order was given.
Reports from Reuters and DW state that 57 year old Kato has 41 cats who live with him in his home in the mountains along with a dog he adopted named Pochi. Kato says he will stay with his animals and ensure they are comfortable all through their lives.
Matsumura left the city at first but returned shortly after for his own animals. Once he returned, the now 55 year old realized that everyone else's pets and livestock were still there. So he began taking care of a wide community of animals including pigs, cats, dogs, ponies, ostriches, and cows.
GNN reported that Matsumura went back inside the exclusion zone and realized local pet dogs had not eaten for several days. After it became clear that no one was coming back to the neighborhood, he went around unchaining dogs from trees, letting cows out of their barns, and feeding anything in need, which earned him the nickname “Guardian of Fukushima's Animals”.
Everything both Kato and Matsumura are doing is risky. Though proud of what Kato and Matsumura have done, their friends and families hope that they can leave the dangerous area. Yet they seem to be determined in what they are doing and both plan to stay there with the animals, come what may.
8.What does the phrase “other beings” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to
A.Animals. B.People. C.Plants. D.Residents.
9.What kind of person is Sakae Kato
A.Curious. B.Caring. C.Ambitious. D.Lonely.
10.What do we know about Naoto Matsumura
A.He is 57 years old.
B.He knows Kato very well.
C.He has dozens of animals to look after.
D.He lives 12.5 miles from the exclusion zone.
11.What can we infer about the two men from the text
A.They will follow the advice of their families.
B.They will call on more people to protect animals.
C.They stay in the mountains to enjoy loneliness.
D.They have no regard for their own safety.

[2023·济南市4月高考模拟]Have you ever been seized with a kind of warm and unclear feeling when you start an old fashioned game Or maybe when you think back to celebrating the holidays as a kid, something magical just seems to be missing now. That's nostalgia (怀旧).
In the early 20th century, nostalgia was considered a mental condition similar to depression. Anyone separated from their native place for a long time was easy to suffer nostalgia. But over the next few decades, the meaning of nostalgia has expanded from indicating homesickness to a general longing for the past. And rather than an awful disease, it turns out to be seen as a bittersweet experience.
From several former studies, researchers of the University of Southampton supposed nostalgia might protect people from being in a bad mood, even when they think about upsetting things—like death. To test it out, they conducted an experiment, where 75 people wrote about their own deaths, and then did a word completion task, in which they were asked to complete different words based on a six letter word starting with C O F F. The people who thought about dying but didn't get nostalgic answered with many death related words, such as“coffin(棺材)”,while the nostalgic people gave more answers unrelated to death like“coffee”, almost as if they'd never thought about death in the first place.
The researchers think that could mean nostalgia, despite being a complex emotional state that can include feelings of loss and sadness, doesn't generally put people in a negative mood. Instead, by allowing individuals to remember personally meaningful and rewarding experiences, nostalgia can boost psychological well being. These studies are pretty limited, though, and there's still a lot we don't know about nostalgia.
Still, these studies support that nostalgia has a purpose. If people are feeling down, it might cheer them up. But there are also some less helpful side effects. For example, advertisers have discovered how powerful nostalgia is as a marketing technique, for nostalgia in ads can make people part with cash more easily. So, it is not all sugar cookies.
12.What is Paragraph 2 intended to explain
A.The depression caused by long term nostalgia.
B.The mental conditions of people away from home.
C.The understandings of nostalgia in different periods.
D.The relationship between homesickness and nostalgia.
13.How did the researchers prove the result of the former studies
A.By performing a test. B.By introducing a concept.
C.By doing an investigation. D.By conducting an interview.
14.What can we infer about nostalgia from Paragraph 4
A.It needs to be further studied. B.It helps to remove bad feelings.
C.It benefits people's physical health. D.It makes people feel life is complex.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.The Reasons for Feeling Nostalgia B.The Commercial Values of Nostalgia
C.Nostalgia: A Method for a Better Mood D.Nostalgia: A Bitter and Pleasant Experience

[2023·新课标Ⅱ卷,C]ReadingArt: ArtforBookLovers is a celebration of an everyday object—the book, represented here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. The image of the reader appears throughout history, in art made long before books as we now know them came into being. In artists' representations of books and reading, we see moments of shared humanity that go beyond culture and time.
In this “book of books,” artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations. Adults are portrayed (描绘) alone in many settings and poses—absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leisure. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate__to.
Books themselves may be used symbolically in paintings to demonstrate the intellect (才智), wealth or faith of the subject. Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects and could be works of art in their own right. More recently, as books have become inexpensive or even throwaway, artists have used them as the raw material for artworks—transforming covers, pages or even complete volumes into paintings and sculptures.
Continued developments in communication technologies were once believed to make the printed page outdated. From a 21st century point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it remains as interactive as any battery powered e reader. To serve its function, a book must be activated by a user: the cover opened, the pages parted, the contents reviewed, perhaps notes written down or words underlined. And in contrast to our increasingly networked lives where the information we consume is monitored and tracked, a printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private, “off line” activity.
4.Where is the text most probably taken from
A.An introduction to a book. B.An essay on the art of writing.
C.A guidebook to a museum. D.A review of modern paintings.
5.What are the selected artworks about
A.Wealth and intellect. B.Home and school.
C.Books and reading. D.Work and leisure.
6.What do the underlined words “relate to” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Understand. B.Paint. C.Seize. D.Transform.
7.What does the author want to say by mentioning the e reader
A.The printed book is not totally out of date. B.Technology has changed the way we read.
C.Our lives in the 21st century are networked. D.People now rarely have the patience to read.

[2023·东北三省四市教研联合体高考模拟试卷]What sort of scenery do you find most appealing Researchers in the U.K. asked volunteers that question, doing an online photo rating game, and the result is what you'd expect. “Beautiful mountains, enough greenery, beautiful water features like lakes and oceans,” says Chanuki Seresinhe, a data scientist at the Warwick Business School. The more surprising finding was that human built structures, towers and cottages, could enhance the understanding of the beauty of a scene. And big expanses of green grass like athletic fields didn't actually rate that highly.
What they did next is where the data science comes in: They fed a computer 160, 000 photographs rated through the online game. And they taught the machine to break each image into the scenic elements it contained, snowy mountains, waterfalls, crosswalks and construction sites.
Then they presented the computer with a challenge: They asked it to rate the scenic beauty of other photos it had never seen before. And it actually did pretty well at estimating the average crowd sourced consensus(共识) of beauty. The study is in the journal RoyalSocietyOpenScience.
Smart as it is, the scenery loving computer probably won't be putting tour guides out of business.
“Actually I think it can help tour guides, because what's interesting is that I think maybe it can actually uncover places that might not have been that popular.” And Seresinhe says the system might also help city planners more objectively evaluate the scenic beauty of new urban developments. “We can also now look at how to design cities that people find more beautiful and which people might want to actually spend more time in.” If the computer doesn't become truly intelligent, humans may express subjective opinions entirely on their own.
8.What surprised you more in the game
A.Athletic fields were popular. B.Human built structures rated highly.
C.Natural landscapes were appealing. D.The views of scene beauty varied among volunteers.
9.What's the attitude of the writer towards computers
A.Approving. B.Subjective. C.Sceptical. D.Negative.
10.How does the writer develop the text
A.By providing examples. B.By analyzing results.
C.By comparing findings. D.By asking questions.
11.Who can benefit a lot from the findings in the text
A.City planners. B.Computer programmers.
C.Newspaper editors. D.Insurance agents.

Indian stepwells(阶梯井) are nothing new, having provided access to fresh water for years before they were abandoned. And while they are a part of Indian cultural heritage, they lost their purpose for some time. As the extreme droughts are rocking India, these ancient stepwells are restored for what they do best—providing water.
Shaped like an upside down pyramid(金字塔) digging into the ground and lined by thousands of steps, stepwells can collect rainwater. They are wonderfully efficient at providing water for nearly 1,500 years. Sadly, over 3,000 stepwells have either been abandoned or left to rot, with some even covered by garbage. Now, thanks to the restoration programme, stepwells will come full circle.
Since the restoration process began, at least 15 wells have been restored in the city of Delhi. The cost will be around $ 60,000, but by doing so, the water supply for the city could reach an additional 33,000 gallons. Rajkumar Sharma, a local citizen, said,“I was elated at the reuse of the stepwells. The stepwell in our village was the only source of water. With time going by, it dried up and changed into a place for rubbish. We now have access to clean water for drinking and other purposes.”
Historian Rana Safvi explained,“Costly and painstaking as this program is, repairing these traditional stepwells to their former glory provides water for many. But apart from that, it also spotlights the beautiful architecture features of ancient India. This helps attract tourists and can also be used in religious ceremonies.”She added,“These stepwell restorations not only help India reduce the impact of droughts, but also are promise of a better future for India overall.”
12.Why are the stepwells in India restored
A.They have a new purpose. B.They are cultural heritage.
C.They can ease water shortage. D.They are in poor condition.
13.What does the underlined word “elated” Paragraph 3 mean
A.Encouraged. B.Shocked. C.Impressed. D.Thrilled.
14.What's Rana Safvi's attitude to the program
A.Cautious. B.Favorable. C.Tolerant. D.Uncaring.
15.What does this text mainly talk about
A.Stepwells are brought back to life. B.Stepwells make India more attractive.
C.Stepwells offer a new solution to droughts. D.Stepwells provide convenience for Indians.
It seems like some people are born with a good sense of direction while others are always getting lost.__16__ You can improve your sense of direction. You just need to work at it. Nowadays, of course, it's convenient to rely on GPS rather than commit a long, complex route to memory.__17__ Studying a larger map and remembering the route before you set out does have its benefits. The amount of mental energy it requires means it's more likely to stick in your mind. Looking at digital maps on a big screen or even studying a paper map also allows you to get a sense of the all important bigger picture and how places fit together.
__18__ It's also important to notice what's around you in all directions. Instead of staring straight ahead, make sure you look up, down and behind you as well. This will be particularly useful when you're doing the journey in reverse(反向)—even if it's just finding your way back from the toilet in a restaurant. Another tip Taking photographs or writing notes at key locations can help you keep them in your memory.
Finally, try to relax when you're on unfamiliar ground. __19__ But this sudden anxiety will only prevent you from calmly working out which way to go. Besides, getting lost is one of the best ways to discover new places and add more details to that ever growing mental map, both of which will help you have a better sense of direction in the long term.
Your sense of direction is a use it or lose it skill. If you only stick to the routes you already know, it's never going to get any better.__20__
A.Don't just look where you're going.
B.So now it's time to start exploring!
C.If you're one of the “lost” ones, don't worry.
D.Anxiety plays a role in our sense of direction, too.
E.It's all too easy to get anxious if you suspect you may be lost.
F.Developing a good sense of direction usually takes much practice.
G.But ignore it if you really want to improve your sense of direction.

[2023·全国甲卷,D]Grizzly bears, which may grow to about 2.5 m long and weigh over 400 kg, occupy a conflicted corner of the American psyche—we revere (敬畏) them even as they give us frightening dreams. Ask the tourists from around the world that flood into Yellowstone National Park what they most hope to see, and their answer is often the same: a grizzly bear.
“Grizzly bears are re occupying large areas of their former range,” says bear biologist Chris Servheen. As grizzly bears expand their range into places where they haven't been seen in a century or more, they're increasingly being sighted by humans.
The western half of the U.S. was full of grizzlies when Europeans came, with a rough number of 50,000 or more living alongside Native Americans. By the early 1970s, after centuries of cruel and continuous hunting by settlers, 600 to 800 grizzlies remained on a mere 2 percent of their former range in the Northern Rockies. In 1975, grizzlies were listed under the Endangered Species Act.
Today, there are about 2,000 or more grizzly bears in the U.S. Their recovery has been so successful that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to de list grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups. For now, grizzlies remain listed.
Obviously, if precautions (预防) aren't taken, grizzlies can become troublesome, sometimes killing farm animals or walking through yards in search of food. If people remove food and attractants from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by without trouble. Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and other farm animal quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away. “Our hope is to have a clean, attractant free place where bears can pass through without learning bad habits,” says James Jonkel, longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula.
4.How do Americans look at grizzlies
A.They cause mixed feelings in people. B.They should be kept in national parks.
C.They are of high scientific value. D.They are a symbol of American culture.
5.What has helped the increase of the grizzly population
A.The European settlers' behavior. B.The expansion of bears' range.
C.The protection by law since 1975. D.The support of Native Americans.
6.What has stopped the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service from de listing grizzlies
A.The opposition of conservation groups. B.The successful comeback of grizzlies.
C.The voice of the biologists. D.The local farmers' advocates.
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Food should be provided for grizzlies. B.People can live in harmony with grizzlies.
C.A special path should be built for grizzlies. D.Technology can be introduced to protect grizzlies.

There are many different types of houses in the UK. You may see detached, semi detached, terraced (排屋的) houses or even end of terrace houses on a typical street. You might see apartments in wealthier parts of town, or people living in bungalows, preferring to live a life without stairs. Strange cottages may dot the countryside, while heading to the cities you could see any number of types of flats, including houses turned into flats, studios and duplexes But one thing you will notice is that many houses come from different eras, and asking the British about their ideal home, many of them will have a specific period property (特性) in mind.
For some, it could be Victorian houses, which are often seen with bay windows, high ceilings, stained glass doors and colored brickwork. During the Victorian era, a huge number of houses, particularly terraced, were built in towns and cities to accommodate vast numbers of workers who were moving from more rural areas.
Georgian architecture refers to houses built during the period of 1714 and 1830 during the rule of four British monarchs. Usually houses with this architectural style have a more symmetrical theme, both internally and externally, with a small square garden in front. For those not into older properties, new buildings from the 1990s onwards offer better insulation (隔热,绝缘) against the cold and newer electrics. And those who prefer less repairs could always go with the open plan or minimalist look of the modern era.
So, whether it's high ceilings, better insulation, brickwork, bungalows or square gardens, people in Britain have a wide variety of preferences when it comes to where they live. And their ideal home may just simply be a case of what style feels like home.

[2023·福州市高三质检]When I stepped into the Samcheong Park Library in Seoul, I saw the future. The simple building had a nice selection of books and a cafe where readers could enjoy coffee while gazing at the leaves outside. It was specifically designed without any latest technology.
“What's so innovative about that?” a librarian in Toronto asked when I showed her pictures. Innovation to her meant digital technology, like 3D printers.“Why couldn't they both be innovative?” I asked.
We are constantly told that innovation is the most important force in our economy, without which we would be left behind. But that fear of missing out has led us to fall into the false traps of innovation over truly innovative ideas that may be simpler and more effective. This mindset implies that if you just buy the new thing, you have innovated! Each year, businesses and individuals run around like broken toy robots, trying to figure out their strategy for the latest buzzword equipment.
At best, this is a waste of resources. Devices are bought, used and abandoned, as the technology's capabilities fall short of its promise. But at its worst, this approach can truly cause damage. Schools cut field trips to purchase tablets with few proven panies that applied AI to hiring have actually strengthened gender and racial prejudices.
True innovation isn't just some magic devices. It is a continuing process of reflection and reassessment, which often means adopting “old” ideas and tools in a new context, or even returning to methods that worked in the past. Adjusted properly, these rearview (后视的) innovations have proved as transformative as novel technologies.
Look no farther than the streets of New York, which have been redesigned recently to accommodate cyclists with car free zones. The idea isn't new. It was created half a century ago, with the aim of bringing cities back to their residents. And while e reader sales have been exploding, Penguin just announced it would publish tiny printed books, an ideal solution for a market demanding both convenience and practicability.
12.Why is a librarian mentioned
A.To set an example. B.To cite an authority.
C.To make a prediction. D.To present an argument.
13.What does the underlined word “buzzword” mean in Para. 3
A.Fashionable. B.Affordable. C.Practical. D.Imaginative.
14.What does the writer agree with about innovation
A.Wasted resources lead to innovation. B.Magic devices encourage innovation.
C.Innovation should be human centered. D.The power of technology is undervalued.
15.What is probably the best title of the text
A.Innovation Is Not That Expensive B.The Future Lies in Returning to the Past
C.Some Best Ideas Are in the Rearview Mirror D.Innovation: The Most Important Force in Economy

Want a relaxing but fun challenge at home?__16__ Puzzles have been around for more than 250 years and the challenge of working out where each piece goes and carefully recreating the scene on the box lid can keep you busy for hours, days or even weeks.
Puzzles come in a huge range of sizes and difficulty levels. For beginners, a 100 piece puzzle is usually a good starting point. __17__ Try grouping pieces with the same colour or design because they will probably go in the same area once the puzzle takes shape.
__18__ Those pieces are easier to find because they have a straight side. Stay patient as you search through pieces and try to make them fit together. You may not find any connecting pieces for ages but then several may suddenly appear.
For a real test, puzzles that have 1,000 pieces or more are a tough task and it's best to complete them with friends or family if you can. Choosing a scene that interests you, such as a favourite film, sport or location, can help keep you interested and determined to work to the final piece. You can get fun educational puzzles, too.__19__
Some of the best places to pick up puzzles are charity shops. They're often on sale for less than 5.Once you have completed a puzzle, it's nice to exchange it with a friend.__20__ You just upload an image, such as a family scene, and they will make a puzzle from it and post it to you. It makes a lovely and unusual present.
A.So others can have a go.
B.You can't beat a good puzzle.
C.Some companies make personalised puzzles.
D.However, a good start doesn't always lead to a good result.
E.Most people like to start by getting the four edges of a puzzle laid out.
F.It can get you used to sorting out how the shapes, patterns and colours go together.
G.For example, you may try a map of the world, historical timelines or the periodic table.

根据ORDER SMILE CARDS部分Note中的“so that they know...the ripples going!” 故选A。
(B)
根据第一段中“Grizzly bears, which may grow to about 2.5 m long and weigh over 400 kg, occupy a conflicted corner of the American psyche—we revere them even as they give us frightening dreams. (灰熊可以长到2.5米长,体重超过400公斤,在美国人的心理中占据着一个矛盾的角落——即使它们给我们带来可怕的梦,我们也敬畏它们)”可知,美国人对灰熊既有害怕,又有敬畏,他们的情感是混合的。故选A项。
根据第三段最后一句“In 1975, grizzlies were listed under the Endangered Species Act. (1975年,灰熊被列入《濒危物种法》)”以及第四段“Today, there are about 2, 000 or more grizzly bears in the U.S. Their recovery has been so successful that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to de list grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. (如今,美国大约有2 000只或更多的灰熊。它们的恢复非常成功,以至于美国鱼类和野生动物管理局两次试图将灰熊从名单上除名,这将放松对灰熊的法律保护,允许它们被猎杀)”可推知,由于1975年起受法律保护,灰熊的数量有了增长。故选C项。
6.答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Today, there are about 2,000 or more grizzly bears in the U.S. Their recovery has been so successful that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to de list grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups. For now, grizzlies remain listed. (如今,美国大约有2 000只或更多的灰熊。它们的恢复非常成功,以至于美国鱼类和野生动物管理局两次试图将灰熊从名单上除名,这将放松对灰熊的法律保护,允许它们被猎杀。由于环保组织的诉讼,这两项努力都被推翻了。目前,灰熊仍在名单上)”可知,是环保组织的反对阻止了美国鱼类和野生动物管理局将灰熊从濒危物种名单上除名。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Obviously, if precautions aren't taken, grizzlies can become troublesome, sometimes killing farm animals or walking through yards in search of food. If people remove food and attractants from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by without trouble. Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and other farm animal quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away. ‘Our hope is to have a clean, attractant free place where bears can pass through without learning bad habits,’ says James Jonkel, longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula.
根据第二、三段描述可知,文中介绍了维多利亚时代的房子和乔治王朝时期的房子,以及20世纪90年代的房子;再结合第四段中的“people in Britain have a wide variety of preferences when it comes to where they live”可知,英国人对房子有着广泛的偏好。

根据画线词前的“This mindset implies that if you just buy the new thing, you have innovated!”
本文为议论文,根据本文论点“Why couldn't they (the Samcheong Park Library and digital technology) both be innovative?”

Visiting Rome Insiders share tips on hotels
To really discover the best of Rome, there's a lot of walking to do. So choosing a hotel in the city centre is wise.
Hotel Lunetta Rome
This four star hotel near Campo de' Fiori will surprise you with its modern black and white marble (大理石) interiors (内部), and it's amazing in the basement where you can take photos and post them on social media—the ancient Roman walls of the Theatre of Pompey. Hotel Lunetta doesn't have a restaurant, but there's a health spa for guests.
Hotel Campo de' Fiori
The best thing about this hotel is its private rooftop terrace (露台), with a 360 degree city view so good that people sit up there even on cold winter evenings. Guests are positively encouraged by the hotel's friendly staff to take a book, a bottle of wine or a pizza to the roof. This homey, four star hotel has comfortable baroque rooms. The hotel is about 10 metres from historic Campo de' Fiori.
Brunetti Twenty Eight Guest House
This pricey family run guest house is a short walk from Piazza del Popolo and also a stone's throw from the Museo dell'Ara Pacis. Brunetti Twenty Eight has seven rooms on two floors. The double rooms aren't huge, but they're big enough and well equipped. Guests can breakfast on a small terrace in summer, or return there after a long day of walking around the city.
Sunset Roma Guest House & Suite
This modest guest house is a good spot from which to see the best of Rome in the day and explore the narrow streets of Monti in the evening. With its small bars, this neighbourhood has an old Rome feel to it. Its airy rooms are a cheaper alternative to some of the city's grand hotels. The hotel is on the street that runs between Via Nazionale and the Colosseum.

[2023·开封市高三第二次模拟]“He'll be over in a minute,”one of Saul Klein's colleagues says apologetically, glancing towards a row of glass rooms where figures can be seen deep in conversation. One minute turns into two and then five, and then ten. Finally, Klein bounds over, saying, “Right, shall we start?”
Klein is the kind of person who you can imagine is in this situation a lot. It's not because he's rude or forgetful or unreliable. In fact, he's not any of those things.
The Johannesburg born Klein is an entrepreneur(企业家) ,often spoken about as the brains behind Lovefilm and an early employee at Skype, but his CV (履历) goes beyond that.
For now, he says, the majority of his time is taken up with the companies LocalGlobe has invested in. “I'm involved on some level with all the companies in the portfolio (投资组合).” What that means in practice is that Klein attends regular meetings, and extraordinary meetings “where we meet with the companies”, and gives advice “when companies are coming for important events like fundraising”. Oh, and on top of that, he's also part of every company's WhatsApp group—200 groups to be precise.
“Time is nothing to him, so he'll be replying to messages at 5 o'clock in the morning,” one of his assistants says. But Klein, a father of three children aged 12, 11 and 4, says he actually tries to be “quite strict” about his time. “I've always tried not to do business at breakfast or dinner time. I try to be able to take the kids to school in the morning, and normally be at home for bedtime. Obviously as the kids get older, they don't want you around as much, but that's not the case while they're at this age,” he says.
This routine isn't just limited to mornings and evenings, Klein says. Ever since he started dating his wife, they both have practiced “relaxing lifestyle”. “It basically means from a Friday night to a Saturday night, I'm not looking at emails, I'm not answering my phone, and I avoid driving. We've been doing that for almost 20 years at this point. I've always found that to be a great relief.”

Cristina, a teen who grew up in a poor neighborhood in Madrid, never imagined herself playing the violin. But today she is the first violinist in an inventive orchestra (管弦乐队), bringing together two dozen other disadvantaged youths, using instruments made from recycled materials.“I am really happy, because the project has changed my life a lot,” said Cristina, her eyes gleaming.
Luis, 18, credits the project with keeping him on a right track in a neighborhood like Vallecas, which has a high school dropout rate.“Instead of meeting up with friends, I preferred to listen to music, play it, and little by little it became a way of life,” he said.
The project, called “Music of Recycling”, is aimed at breathing new life into junk while also benefiting youths from disadvantaged backgrounds and it is run by Spanish environmental group Ecoembes and is inspired by Paraguay's Cateura Orchestra of Recycled Instruments, made up of musicians from a poor neighborhood who play instruments made from materials found in waste.
After Ecoembes invited the Cateura Orchestra of Recycled Instruments to perform in Madrid in 2014, the group decided to found its own similar ensemble (乐团) that same year, said Gil, director of Music of Recycling. The ensemble put on its first concert just four months later and “the kids could not play more than four notes,”said Gil.
Now after having performed in cities across Spain, “We already have four boys studying in scholarships at music schools,” he added. More than 100 children are taking music classes from members of the orchestra as part of the project.
The instruments are created by Soler, a third generation instrument maker, from cans, wooden boxes and parts of abandoned instruments. He tried to make the instruments as close to their “normal” shape as possible so the children won't have difficulty playing regular equipment in the future.
8.What does the author intend to do by referring to Cristina and Luis
A.Praise the teens for their efforts. B.Introduce the launch of the project.
C.Show the effects of the project. D.Present ways to mix music and recycling.

11.What's Soler's attitude towards the project
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Tolerant. D.Uncaring.

Without sharp reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, climate change threatens the future Winter Olympic Games because their locations would be too warm to host the events, a new study has found.
If the world's high emissions continue their trend, by the 2080s all but one of the 21 cities that previously hosted the Winter Olympic Games—Sapporo, Japan—would not be able to do so again. Among them, 6 cities would be considered “marginal” while 14 would even be seen “unreliable”—meaning the right conditions for snow and athlete safety cannot be met.
But that won't necessarily happen if the world takes urgent action and follows the Paris Climate Accords adopted in 2015, according to Daniel Scott, the lead researcher for the University of Waterloo's report. Under that deal, nearly 200 countries agreed to greatly cut their collective greenhouse emissions.
Athletes and coaches surveyed by the researchers said they're already seeing the effect climate change has on their sports. “Some of the coaches that did the survey have been coaches in the sport for 30 years,” Scott said.“They've traveled the world, back to the same competitions, and they've seen that certain competitions don't happen as regularly or uninterruptedly as they used to because of warmer temperatures.”
The Summer Olympics are also feeling the effects of climate change. The Tokyo's Olympic and Paralympic Games are likely one of—if not—the hottest and most humid Olympic Games on record. Daily temperatures reached 80°F high with high humidity (湿度) that could make it feel like 100°F.
But winter sports seem more strongly influenced by the impact of a warmer world. During the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, skiers were overheating in the same way a marathon runner would do at nearly 90°F weather. Due to the great impact, the study makes us worry that outdoor games may have to move indoors or be held at a different time of year in order to accommodate higher temperatures.
12.What does the underlined word “marginal” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Almost unqualified. B.Pretty satisfactory. C.Rather unpopular. D.Quite suitable.
13.Why are the Tokyo's Olympics mentioned in Paragraph 5
A.To show the spirit of the Olympics. B.To stress the impact of climate change.
C.To reveal the cause of warmer climate. D.To compare the Summer and Winter Olympics.
14.What is the author's attitude to the finding of the study
A.Conservative. B.Tolerant. C.Optimistic. D.Concerned.
15.What does the text mainly talk about
A.Global climate change. B.Greenhouse gas emissions.
C.The Winter Olympics' crisis. D.The future Olympic Games.

We may befriend more people on social media, but we have fewer real friends—the kind who would help us out in tough times, listen sympathetically no matter what, lend us money, or keep a secret if we share one.
__16__ He is a Cornell University sociologist who surveyed more than 2,000 adults and found that from 1985 to 2010, the number of truly close friends has dropped even though we're socializing as much as ever. On average, participants listed 2 close friends in his survey. __17__“These are the people you think of as your real friends, your go to people if you need something,” Brashears said.
Brashears asked people online from a database called Time sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences to list the names of people with whom they had discussed “important matters” over the previous six months.48 percent of participants listed one close friend when asked, 28 percent listed two and 19 percent listed more.__18__ He reported the results in the journal SocialNetworks.
__19__ Brashears said his survey can't tell us conclusively (确凿地), but his guess is that while we meet just as many people as we used to, we sort them differently.
Does that suggest we're more isolated in these times when we seem to meet more people online than in person Social scientists say social media may actually be healthy for us. Keith Hampton from the University of Pennsylvania wrote a report.“Internet, or social media users have more close relationships than other people. They get more overall social support than other people.__20__”wrote Hampton in his blog post.
But online contact and personal contact are different. While Hampton reports we know more people because of social media, Brashears reports there are fewer whom we choose to trust with our most intimate worries.
A.What's the reason behind them
B.What's the meaning of the survey
C.That's the conclusion made by Matthew Brashears.
D.The report reflected issues behind the phenomenon.
E.At the same time, a little more than 4 percent didn't list anyone.

17.答案与解析:F 根据上文中的“from 1985 to 2010,the number of truly close friends has dropped”可知,从1985年至2010年,真正亲密的朋友的数量在减少。
18.答案与解析:E 空后一句讲到了“He reported the results in the journal SocialNetworks”,由此可见,该句之前应是全部的研究结果。

[2023·新课标Ⅱ卷,B]Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo's students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts' classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands on experiments such as soil testing, flower and seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they're eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program's benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo's special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.”

A.She used to be a health worker. B.She grew up in a low income family.

A.Far reaching. B.Predictable. C.Short lived. D.Unidentifiable.

Snowboarding pioneer Shaun White took his final bow at the bottom of the halfpipe (U型滑道) course at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games on Friday, officially marking the end of his long and storied career as a professional snowboarder. No matter how hard the 35 year old tried to hold back his emotions, it just got to be too much.
Although he wanted to do his best by performing two 1440s during his final run, he fell while attempting his second double cork 1440. Despite the fall, everyone cheered for the snowboarding legend at Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou as he stood back up and continued down the halfpipe.“Siding on my back, I was thinking, this isn't how I wanted it to go. You don't always get what you want, but I have to be thankful for everything I do have and what I have gotten in my career and that's why I'm very emotional. I can't believe it's over. It's wild,” said White, who finished in fourth place.
From a young age, snowboarding was what White wanted to do more than anything. At 19, White took part in his first Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 and scored gold. The victory changed his life forever and he became the sport's global superstar.
Meanwhile, he continued to push his limits by landing the first double cork in halfpipe and inventing the double McTwist 1260. Those tricks brought him three Olympic gold medals, as well as injuries, including the brutal (残暴的) crash in 2018 when he slammed his head against the top of a superpipe, leading to 62 stitches (缝) in his face in the lead up to the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.
“That I'm not competing doesn't mean I won't be here at the next Winter Olympics cheering on all my friends,” he said. “The future for me is so exciting. There is so much to do and so much to live for. This is just the beginning for me.”
8.What did White feel when he finished the competition

B.He will continue to contribute to the ice snow sports.

[2023·石家庄市高三教学情况调查(二)] More than a decade ago, the UK's Royal Society offered £ 1 million to the first person in the world to create a chemical free product. No one has yet claimed the money because it is impossible. Water is a chemical. So is your tea. Yet there is still so much confusion about everyday products, from cleaning sprays to cosmetics (化妆品). While some are labeled as chemical free, others declare they are non poisonous, natural and eco friendly.
To work out whether products contain harmful chemicals, which are harmful or dangerous to us or the planet, we need to look at the bigger picture of how something is produced and where it ends up after we have used it. Our homes are just a snapshot (照片) of a complex global supply chain. Your handbag may not be dangerous, but direct exposure to the chromium salts used in commercial leather factories can cause uncomfortable conditions in people involved in its production. And the chlorine bleach (漂白水) that gets washed down the toilet That is poisonous to animals relying on water.
Labels are so full of jargon (行业术语); however, identifying what is good and what isn't can feel impossible. A starting point is to not be tricked by marketing words. Even the term “sustainable” has no official definition, so for green credentials (环保资质) look for proof of claims in the form of certificates, such as Cradle to Cradle, which ensures the chemicals used are safe for people and the environment, and that they get reused in the production process.
Also be skeptical about labels focusing on what a product doesn't contain, such as “paraben free” or “no harmful substances”. Real transparency (透明度) is about making clear the things that are used to make products, not taking our attention away from them.
Therefore, until long term effects on people and the planet are investigated, we should choose brands that are fully transparent and call for clearer labeling from the rest.
12.Why does the author mention the UK's Royal Society
A.To explain a concept. B.To lead to a topic.
C.To provide a solution. D.To make a prediction.
13.What message does the author convey by mentioning “handbag” in Paragraph 2
A.The production process may be harmful to producers.
B.Daily items at home are dangerous to the planet.
C.Commercial leather factories reflect a complex global supply chain.
D.Health conditions of consumers are supposed to be attached importance to.
14.How can people make right judgments on labels
A.By relying on marketing words. B.By identifying product brands.
C.By focusing on product packaging. D.By checking on authorized certifications.
15.What's the author's attitude towards the labels of products
A.Favorable. B.Intolerant. C.Cautious. D.Unclear.
