When I graduated from college and moved to Washington, D.C., in 2017, I left all of my friends behind. Treating new associates with home-cooked meals was my best attempt at making new friends and curing my loneliness. Soon enough, everyone was asking me for the recipes(食谱), which is how Bun Bo Bae, my Vietnamese cooking blog, came into being in 2019.
I’ve probably been destined(注定的) to start a food blog. I spent most of my childhood in the kitchen with my mom. As a child, I’d sit and watch her cook. My duties started with just passing her the ingredients(配料). Soon, I was measuring, steaming and stir-frying my way toward kitchen mastery. I left for college before I could learn my mom’s best dishes.
Studying abroad, I was desperately homesick in the beginning. So, I started calling my mom and asking for the recipes for my favorite dishes. It turns out that my mom doesn’t have any recipes. She grew up in the kitchen with her mom too, and my grandma passed on her knowledge orally(口头地).
Bun Bo Bae was initially a space for me to put what I learned into writing. I didn’t want all of the secret knowledge behind dishes like my mom’s bún bò hué (a spicy beef and pork noodle soup that inspired the blog’s name) or my dad’s thit bǎm s t cà chua (a pork-based tomato sauce) to vanish one day if the oral tradition ended. I wanted to write down every piece of advice I was given in detail to make sure people could keep creating these dishes as authentically as possible. As my food blog and follower count grew, so did my confidence in the kitchen.
Bun Bo Bae also promoted my confidence at work. I taught myself social media and web building, and the skills helped me land my job at NPR (National Public Radio), where one of my recipes was served in Sound Bites. I even hosted a cooking class for my colleagues to celebrate AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Heritage Month.
4. What can be inferred about the author from paragraph 1
A. She enjoyed her time of staying alone.
B. Her cooking blog has existed for a decade.
C. Her meals were popular with her new friends.
D. She kept a cooking blog at the request of her friends.
5. How did the author’s mother learn cooking
A. She searched for information online.
B. She taught herself as an adult.
C. She learnt from her own mother as a kid.
D. She once signed up for a cooking course.
6. What does the underlined word “vanish” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Spread. B. Disappear. C. Change. D. Repeat.
7. What is Sound Bites probably
A. A dining place. B. A cooking blog.
C. A cooking class for Asians. D. A TV programme about cooking.
C
How can an air-breathing animal sleep safely in the open ocean, with killer whales and great whites hanging around near the surface For elephant seals, we now know the solution. Jessica Kendall-Bar at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California and her colleagues have developed a system for recording the electrical brain activity of elephant seals, as well as their heart rates and movements. After tests on a few captive (圈养的) elephant seals, they applied this system to eight wild female seals with a removable tool. The team didn’t do this with males as their much larger size makes it harder to attach any kind of device.
The team firstly used the devices to record how the seals move while in slow-wave, or deep sleep, and also in rapid-eye-movement (REM), or dream sleep. And then, with this, they looked back at previous time-and-depth recordings from more than 300 wild females and finally found out when they were sleeping and which sleep stage they were in.
The study shows that females out in the open sea sleep for less than 10 minutes at a time during dives and get only around 2 hours of sleep per day in total, compared with around 10 hours when they are on land. At around 100 metres or so below the surface they go into slow-wave sleep and start sinking. But when the animals go into REM sleep, they do lose control. Their bodies turn upside down and sink in a characteristic spiral, with one animal going as deep as 377 metres. Then the seals wake and swim back to the surface. In waters less than 250 metres deep, the seals instead sleep still on the seafloor, like other seals do.
Other marine mammals have solved the how-to-sleep-at-sea problem in a different way. Only half of the brains of whales and dolphins sleep at a time, allowing the other half to watch out for danger and maintain breathing at the surface. Fur seals use the same trick. Unusually, though, fur seals can do both half- and whole-brain sleeping -- when they are on land the proportion (比例) of whole-brain sleep increases.
8. What does the text say about female seals
A. They have harder skin than males.
B. They are smaller in size than males.
C. They like living in groups more than males.
D. They have more active brain activity than males.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The process of the new study. B. The results of previous studies.
C. The advantage of the new device. D. The sleep patterns of elephant seals.
10. What happens to elephant seals when they are in slow-wave sleep
A. Their bodies will turn upside down.
B. Their bodies are unmoving on the seafloor.
C. They have gone as deep as 377 metres at sea.
D. They fall gradually into the depths.
11. What is special about the sleep at sea of fur seals
A. They sleep the shortest periods.
B. They have both half- and whole-brain sleeping.
C. They can sleep between 10- to 30-minute deep dives.
D. The length of their sleeping time will decrease sharply.
D
Who is responsible when an AI system causes harm or death The California judges may soon have to decide. In December 2019, a person driving a Tesla with an AI navigation (导航) system killed two people in an accident. The driver got up to 12 years in prison. Several federal agencies are looking into Tesla crashes and the U. S. Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation (刑事调查) into how Tesla markets its self-driving system.
Our current liability (责任) system -- used to determine responsibility and payment for injuries -- is unprepared for AI. The time to think about liability is now as AI becomes universal but remains uncontrolled. AI-based systems have already contributed to injuries. In 2019 an AI algorithm (算法) misidentified a suspect (犯罪分子), leading to a mistake. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, an AI-based mental health chatbot encouraged a simulated suicidal (有自杀倾向的) patient to end her own life.
Getting the liability landscape right is important to unlocking AI’s potential. Uncertain rules and the possibility of costly litigation will discourage the investment, development and adoption of AI in industries ranging from health care to autonomous vehicles.
Currently liability investigation usually starts and stops with the person who uses the algorithm. Indeed, if someone misuses an AI system or ignores its warnings, that person should be responsible legally. But AI errors are often not the fault of the user. Who can fault an emergency room physician for an AI algorithm that misses papilledema (a kind of disease) An AI failure to find the condition could delay care and possibly cause a patient to lose their sight. Yet papilledema is challenging to analyse without a doctor’s examination. AI is constantly self-learning, meaning it takes information and looks for patterns in it. This further complicates the liability question. How much can you blame a physician for an error caused by an unexplainable AI
Industries ranging from finance to Internet safety are on the point of AI revolutions (革命) that could benefit billions worldwide. But these benefits shouldn’t be cut down by poorly developed algorithms: 21st-century AI demands a 21st-century liability system.
12. What can be learned about the car accident
A. It is the first case related to an AI system.
B. No one survived the terrible car accident.
C. It was mainly caused by the self-driving system.
D. The driver was sentenced to over ten years in prison.
13. What does the author try to stress by giving the two examples in paragraph 2
A. The AI-based systems are often reliable.
B. The AI-based mental health chatbot saved many lives.
C. The current liability system needs to be adjusted accordingly.
D. The current liability system can determine responsibility about AI.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. AI mistakes have no effect on its users.
B. AI failures appear more often than not.
C. Blaming AI users alone does not solve the problem.
D Users do often ignore the potential dangers of AI systems.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Who Is Responsible When AI Kills
B. How Can We Make AI Systems Safer
C. What Are Disadvantages of Using AI Systems
D. What Does 21st Century Demand of AI Algorithm

I was eight years old when I first experienced the feeling of guilt. Then I had three close friends, David, Kyle and Richard, and I could rely on them for anything. We did everything together, from playing four square and handball at break, to eating lunch at our own spot. We hung out every second we could.
It was a Wednesday at school, and that morning I didn’t have breakfast. My stomach growled (咆哮) every 10 minutes louder and louder. I felt like the whole class could hear my stomach. I constantly stared at the clock go tick tock, tick tock for hours. As soon as the bell rang for lunch, our teacher led the line to the dining hall, but when I checked my pockets to see if I brought my money, I only had a dollar. I was angry that I left my money at home and desperate to have lunch. So, I quickly asked my teacher to use the restroom, ran up the stairs to see all the backpacks hung up against the wall and saw my friend Richard’s bag.
I looked around to see if anyone was near and found no one was in sight. As I opened the bag and saw a whole bag of coins, I decided to take eight of them. Then I bought my lunch and carried on through the day like nothing had happened.
When school was over, Jamba Juice came to sell smoothies (冰沙). I had totally forgotten once a month on Wednesdays Jamba Juice would sell smoothies for five dollars. I was already satisfied with the lunch, and didn’t even bother caring for a smoothie. Everyone wanted a smoothie and the whole school and their parents were in the line waiting.

C 5. C 6. B 7. D
根据第一段中的“Treating new associates with home-cooked meals was my best attempt at making new friends and curing my loneliness. Soon enough, everyone was asking me for the recipes(食谱), which is how Bun Bo Bae, my Vietnamese cooking blog, came into being in 2019.(用家常菜招待新同事是我结交新朋友和治愈孤独的最好尝试。很快,每个人都在问我食谱,这就是我的越南烹饪博客Bun Bo Bae在2019年诞生的原因。)”可知,作者用家常菜招待新同事,很快每个人都在问作者食谱,由此可推测出,作者的菜很受新朋友欢迎。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“She grew up in the kitchen with her mom too, and my grandma passed on her knowledge orally(口头地).(她也和她的妈妈一起在厨房里长大,我姥姥口头传授了她的知识。)”
根据最后一段中的“I taught myself social media and web building, and the skills helped me land my job at NPR (National Public Radio), where one of my recipes was served in Sound Bites.(我自学了社交媒体和网络建设,这些技能帮助我在NPR,即国家公共广播电台,找到了工作,在这里我的一个食谱在Sound Bites上提供。)”

B 9. A 10. D 11. B

The team didn’t do this with males as their much larger size makes it harder to attach any kind of device.”(在对几只圈养的海象进行测试后,他们用一个可移动的工具将该系统应用于八只野生雌海象。
根据第二段“The team firstly used the devices to record how the seals move while in slow-wave, or deep sleep, and also in rapid-eye-movement (REM), or dream sleep. And then, with this, they looked back at previous time-and-depth recordings from more than 300 wild females and finally found out when they were sleeping and which sleep stage they were in.”(研究小组使用这些设备记录了海象在慢波睡眠(又叫深度睡眠)和快速眼动睡眠(又叫梦境睡眠)时的活动情况。 故选A项。
根据第三段第二句“At around 100 metres or so below the surface they go into slow-wave sleep and start sinking.”(在水下100米左右,它们进入慢波睡眠,开始下沉。)

D. Users do often ignore the potential dangers of AI systems.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Who Is Responsible When AI Kills
B. How Can We Make AI Systems Safer
C. What Are Disadvantages of Using AI Systems
D. What Does 21st Century Demand of AI Algorithm
D 13. C 14. C 15. A

根据第四段前三句“Currently liability investigation usually starts and stops with the person who uses the algorithm. Indeed, if someone misuses an AI system or ignores its warnings, that person should be responsible legally. But AI errors are often not the fault of the user.”(目前,责任调查通常由使用该算法的人开始和结束。
故选A项。

I was eight years old when I first experienced the feeling of guilt. Then I had three close friends, David, Kyle and Richard, and I could rely on them for anything. We did everything together, from playing four square and handball at break, to eating lunch at our own spot. We hung out every second we could.
It was a Wednesday at school and that morning I didn’t have breakfast.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I walked with my friends to the line. When Richard got his bag of coins out, he asked me, “Do you want to buy a smoothie ” I said, “No. I didn’t bring money for it.” After we approached the front of the line, David and Kyle ordered a smoothie each, while Richard ordered two, one of which he handed me. I was in disbelief. How generous he was! Right then, I felt the feeling of guilt. Knowing that I stole from a friend with a warm heart made me miserable.
I didn’t have enough sleep that night. The next day, I felt depressed. I told my mother that I wasn’t feeling well, so she let me stay at home that day. Thinking twice, I knew I had to apologized to Richard. When Friday morning approached, I found Richard and told him what I had done to him on Wednesday, giving his money back. He accepted my apology and told me I should have asked for it because we’re friends. That week changed me a lot, which made me aware of the effect of committing a sinful act.
