It’s been almost a year since our third and last child graduated from stakes high school. Looking back, I can see now that there were some parenting mistakes we could have avoided. I share them so that you don’t have to repeat them.
I wish I had dealt with peer pressure better. During the senior year, it seems like every conversation I had at a school meeting ended up being about college. It made me anxious to see my kids’ classmates applying part of my brain kicked in with “Oh yeah My kid has better scores than yours he could get in anywhere yours can!” I probably passed some of that stress to my kids, who didn’t need to deal with my anxieties on top of their own. Everyone has their own path. It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing --- the only person that matters is your son or daughter.
I also worried about their social lives. It made me anxious that my kids didn’t seem to have the common teen interest in school dances or parties but preferred to have a few friends over for a movie sometimes. I can now say this: worrying about their social lives was a total waste of time and energy. I should simply have enjoyed them being at home. They saved their focus for things like Physics and History. And they are doing just fine in college.
I simply thought teenagers would go to bed when they were tired. I didn’t realize the addictive(上瘾的) power of video games or texting. My daughter slept with her phone in her bed for at least two years. If I could do it again, every kid would have been required to leave the phone in the kitchen before bed.
I’m proud to say that today we have three college students who are well-prepared young adults in spite of every parenting mistake I made in high school to delay(推迟) that.
4. The text is probably written by _________.
A. a college student. B. a regretful parent.
C. a child health expert. D. an experienced teacher.
5. What can we infer from the author’s words underlined in paragraph 2
A. She was a competitive person.
B. She only focused on scores.
C. She cared about her kids’ personal interests.
D. She was hardly influenced by peer pressure.
6. What made the author worried about her kids
A. They had no real friends. B. They started going to dances.
C. They spent little time at home. D. They seldom did anything social.
7 What advice would the author give parents
A. Build good relationships with other parents.
B. Let kids make their own decisions.
C. Do not allow screens at bedtime.
D. Think twice before you answer.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C

根据最后一段“I’m proud to say that today we have three college students who are well-prepared young adults in spite of every parenting mistake I made in high school to delay(推迟) that.”(我很自豪地说,尽管我在高中时犯了很多养育孩子的错误,但今天我们的三个大学生已经做好了充分的准备,成为了年轻人。)

It made me anxious that my kids didn’t seem to have the common teen interest in school dances or parties but preferred to have a few friends over for a movie sometimes.”(我也担心他们的社交生活。

If I could do it again, every kid would have been required to leave the phone in the kitchen before bed.”(我没有意识到电子游戏或短信会让人上瘾。
C
Your smartphone breaks. The repair costs too much money. So you give up and buy a new device (设备). That this happens so often is no coincidence (巧合).
Many big device makers are putting more new products on the market. But they do not sell specialized tools and parts needed for repairs. And they offer no instruction on how to repair their products. As a result, the independent repair shops in your neighborhood find they cannot repair your broken smartphone. You can only go to faraway authorized (经授权的) repair shops to get the necessary repair service, which is often expensive.
In recent years, some producers have taken steps to make repairs easier, but there’s a growing effort across the world to push them to do more. Some time ago, the “Right to Repair” movement heard good news from the White House. The president of the US on Friday signed an order aimed at encouraging healthy competition in the US economy. It includes a condition for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC was asked to make rules preventing producers from limiting independent device repair shops and DIY repairs.
“Right to Repair” is a global movement to make sure everyone has the right to fix the products they own. The idea has generally come from the United States. The earliest known published reference using the group of words comes from the auto industry dating back to 2003. Its supporters require companies to provide their parts, tools and information for consumers (消费者) and repair shops. They also encourage the government to make laws to force producers to increase device reparability (维修性).
The FTC in May presented a 56-page report. It said that “many consumer products have become harder to fix. ”The report also found that “the burden (负担) of repair limits may fall more heavily on communities of color and consumers having little money” because many independent repair shops are owned by people of color and because high-cost repairs hit low-paid consumers harder.
8. What problem does the author discuss in paragraph 2
A. Electronic products’ quality is low.
B. The repair market makes little money.
C. The prices of new devices keep rising.
D. Customers have difficulty repairing devices.
9. What is the US government’s attitude to the “Right to Repair” movement
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
10. In writing paragraph 4, the author aims to ________.
A. raise a problem. B. reach a conclusion.
C give background information. D. introduce a discussion topic.
11. What can we learn about the movement from the last paragraph
A. It may especially benefit the poor.
B. It will help reduce production costs.
C. It was started by communities of color.
D It is supported by authorized repair shops.
D 9. C 10. C 11. A
根据文章第二段“Many big device makers are putting more new products on the market. But they do not sell specialized tools and parts needed for repairs. And they offer no instruction on how to repair their products. As a result, the independent repair shops in your neighborhood find they cannot repair your broken smartphone. (许多大型设备制造商正在向市场推出更多新产品。但他们不出售修理所需的专用工具和零件。而且他们也不提供如何修理产品的指导。结果,你家附近的独立维修店发现他们无法修理你坏掉的智能手机。)”可知,许多大型设备制造商推出产品的同时,并没有提供专用修理所需的专用工具和零件以及修理产品的说明,这导致客户很难修理设备。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“The president of the US on Friday signed an order aimed at encouraging healthy competition in the US economy. It includes a condition for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) . The FTC was asked to make rules preventing producers from limiting independent device repair shops and DIY repairs. (周五,美国总统签署了一项旨在鼓励美国经济健康竞争的命令。其中包括联邦贸易委员会(FTC)的一个条件。联邦贸易委员会被要求制定规则,防止生产商限制独立的设备维修店和DIY维修。)”可推知,美国政府对“维修权”运动的态度是支持的。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段““Right to Repair” is a global movement to make sure everyone has the right to fix the products they own. The idea has generally come from the United States. The earliest known published reference using the group of words comes from the auto industry dating back to2003 (“修理权”是一项全球性的运动,旨在确保每个人都有修理自己产品的权利。这个想法通常来自美国。已知最早使用这组词的公开参考文献来自2003年的汽车行业)”可知,本段对“修理权”运动的相关知识做出介绍,旨在提供背景资料。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The report also found that “the burden (负担) of repair limits may fall more heavily on communities of color and consumers having little money” because many independent repair shops are owned by people of color and because high-cost repairs hit low-paid consumers harder.(报告还发现,“维修限制的负担可能更多地落在有色人种和没有钱的消费者身上”,因为许多独立的维修店都是有色人种开的,而且高成本的维修对低收入消费者的打击更大。)” 故选A。
D
I come from a family of dog lovers—although my late mother never fed our pet s table foods, so I suppose that she was as lukewarm about them as I was. While I had the idea of getting a cat just after I moved to my first tiny studio apartment in New York City, I quickly realized the litter box(猫砂盆) would never be out of my line of sight. So I headed to the local nursery to pick up some indoor plants for a little companionship(陪伴). Little did I know that Phil and Charlotte, the philodendron and spider plant I bought that day more than25 years ago, would still be my roommates all these years later.
I have nothing against people who love their dogs—if pet ownership makes them happy, I’m happy for them. But as an extremely independent person, I find dogs too needy. When so many people kept puppies(小狗) during the lockdown days of the early COVID-19 pandemic, I turned my apartment into a greenhouse. My home became the quiet and peaceful place I needed at the time. And never once did I need to double-mask to take a dog on a walk in the cold rain!
But plants have personality and need attention too. They just don’t show it by crying or jumping on me. I’ve got a peace lily, which I’ve named Herald, who lowers his head dramatically(夸张做作地) when he needs a drink, giving me a message that the rest of the crowd are probably thirsty too. He springs back up just as dramatically right after I water him, and he makes me feel so proud that I’m keeping living things alive. It’s a quieter form of caregiving and companionship than pets, but it brings me purpose and joy.
Phil and Charlotte have completely different personalities than Herald. They know and have kept all my adult-life secrets, and like any good roommates, they maintain a low profile(低姿态). Overwatering, underwatering, fertilizer(肥料) or no, a fancy new flowerpot(花盆)—they don’t care about any of it. They just grow. I may not be able to take them to the dog park to communicate with my neighbors, but I have joined a community gardening group where all the members happily talk about their beloved potted friends too. So even if it seems unlikely, plants can widen your social circle just as much as a dog can.
12. What does the underlined part “lukewarm about” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Confident in. B. Uninterested in. C. Mistaken about. D. Concerned about.
13. How did the author get through the hard days of the early COVID-19 pandemic
A. By playing with her dog. B. By staying with her family.
C. By taking care of her plants. D. By joining a community gardening group.
pared with Herald, Phil and Charlotte _________.
A. are easier to raise. B. have shorter lives.
C. need more attention. D. are more attractive to pets.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. It is difficult to find your true purpose and joy in life.
B. Taking your pets out is a good way to widen your social circle.
C. I do share caregiving responsibilities with my family members.
D. Keeping my leafy roommates alive is my suitable way to be a caregiver.
B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中“When so many people kept puppies(小狗) during the lockdown days of the early COVID-19 pandemic, I turned my apartment into a greenhouse. My home became the quiet and peaceful place I needed at the time. (在COVID-19大流行初期的封锁时期,很多人养小狗,我把我的公寓变成了温室。我的家变成了我当时所需要的安静祥和的地方。)”以及第三段中“ I’ve got a peace lily, which I’ve named Herald, who lowers his head dramatically(夸张做作地) when he needs a drink, giving me a message that the rest of the crowd are probably thirsty too.( 我养了一只和平百合,我给它起名叫“先驱”,它需要喝水的时候会戏剧性地低下头,告诉我其他植物可能也渴了。)”
根据最后一段中“Phil and Charlotte have completely different personalities than Herald. They know and have kept all my adult-life secrets, and like any good roommates, they maintain a low profile(低姿态). Overwatering, underwatering, fertilizer(肥料) or no, a fancy new flowerpot(花盆)—they don’t care about any of it. ( Phil和Charlotte的品性和Herald完全不同。它们知道并保守了我成年生活的所有秘密,就像所有好的室友一样,它们保持着低调。浇水过多、浇水不足、施肥或不施肥、一个漂亮的新花盆——它们根本不在乎这些。)”可知,不论是浇水过多、浇水不足、施肥或不施肥,Phil和Charlotte都不在乎,都能够茁壮成长,即它们很容易养活。故选A。
D选项“Keeping my leafy roommates alive is my suitable way to be a caregiver.( 让我那些叶子繁茂的室内植物活下来,是我当照顾者的最合适方式。)”
Whether you’re just starting a workout routine or are already a gym regular, you’ve probably wondered at some point: ___16___ Here’s what you need to know.
First things first: There is no one size fits all answer to this question. ___17___. For instance, the best weekly workout plan for a marathoner (马拉松运动员) looks very different from a weight-lifting routine for beginners.
If you’re just looking to improve your fitness level, your magic number of days depend s on how active you already are. For example, you’ll probably see physical and mental results from one day a week if you don’t already work out at all. ___18___, one day probably won’t challenge your body enough to maintain your fitness or make progress. In general, four to five days a week will do wonders for your health if you’re aiming to improve or maintain your fitness. Of course, if you’re just getting started, that might be too big of a jump at first. ___19___. Instead, a good workout plan for a beginner is to try starting with two workouts a week. After you get used to that, you can consider gradually increasing the number of days.
___20___. Not taking a rest day when you need it, especially if you are overtraining, can increase your risk of injury, decrease your performance, your motivation (积极性), etc.
A. What types of exercise should I choose
B. Working out every day is not a good plan
C. How many days a week should I work out
D. It really depends on your fitness level and goals
E. But if you’re used to several workout days a week
F. And that can turn you off completely from working out
G. Setting a proper goal for how many times you work out every week can be helpful
C 17. D 18. E 19. F 20. B

根据上文“Whether you’re just starting a workout routine or are already a gym regular, you’ve probably wondered at some point:(无论你是刚开始锻炼还是已经是健身房的常客,你可能都在某个时候想知道)”及下文“For instance, the best weekly workout plan for a marathoner (马拉松运动员) looks very different from a weight-lifting routine for beginners.(例如,马拉松运动员的最佳每周锻炼计划看起来与初学者的举重计划大不相同)”可知,此处应该是你想知道每周的训练时间是多少。 C. How many days a week should I work out

It really depends on your fitness level and goals
根据下文“one day probably won’t challenge your body enough to maintain your fitness or make progress.(一天可能不足以挑战你的身体来保持健康或取得进步)”可知,此处指出可能一天不足以满足你的需求。 E. But if you’re used to several workout days a week(但是如果你习惯了一周锻炼几天)能够衔接下文,语言连贯,符合语境。故选E。
根据上文“Of course, if you’re just getting started, that might be too big of a jump at first.(当然,如果你刚刚开始,这可能是一个太大的跳跃)”可知,对于初学者来说,开始的时候,锻炼量不能太多。 F. And that can turn you off completely from working out
根据下文“Not taking a rest day when you need it, especially if you are overtraining, can increase your risk of injury, decrease your performance, your motivation (积极性), etc.(当你需要休息的时候却不休息,尤其是当你训练过度的时候,这会增加你受伤的风险,降低你的表现和动力,等等)”可知,锻炼的时候,应该适当休息,否则会造成不好的结果。 B. Working out every day is not a good plan

C. give background information. D. introduce a discussion topic.
11. What can we learn about the movement from the last paragraph
A. It may especially benefit the poor.
B. It will help reduce production costs.
C. It was started by communities of color.
D. It is supported by authorized repair shops.
