Whether it is for a special festival, to express thanks or to just let someone know that you care about them, giving gifts is a common custom. The purpose of giving gifts may be similar, but the tradition varies from country to country. A gift of respect in one place may be considered rude in another. Take a look at three unique gift-giving traditions.
India
If you’re invited to someone’s home in India, you should bring a small gift, whether it’s a box of chocolates or some flowers. Gifts shouldn’t be wrapped in black or white colors, because they are considered unlucky. Instead, use bright colors such as green, red or yellow. When giving money, it should have an odd number (奇数) value, which is believed to bring good luck. Instead of receiving a gift with-both hands, Indians generally only use their right hand because left hands are considered unclean.
Japan
For most Japanese, the ritual (礼节) of giving presents is more important than the gifts themselves. The correct way is to present or receive gifts with both hands. Every gift should be wrapped. That’s because un-covered gifts are considered disrespectful. To show politeness and thanks, people may turn it down once or twice before finally accepting it. Gifts should be given in pairs, but four should be avoided just like in China. Lucky numbers also include eight, for eight is said to bring prosperity (兴旺).
Native America
While it may be common for guests to prepare gifts for hosts, this is different in Native American communities. From weddings to birthday celebrations, guests are the ones who receive gifts. Gifts are usually homemade arts and crafts (手工艺品)-made by hand to show love, respect and appreciation.
1. What color should be avoided when you wrap a gift in India
A. Green. B. Red. C. Yellow. D. White.
2. What do gift-giving customs in India and Japan have in common
A. Wrapped gifts. B. Receiving with both hands.
C. Similar lucky numbers. D. Rejecting once or twice.

I was diagnosed at the age of 14 with a disease, which the doctors said would leave me in a wheelchair at 25 and dead at 40. Luckily, it didn’t happen as predicted. The disease never spread to my legs, for which I am very grateful.
Still, everything I did hurt, from opening a door to putting on my clothes. I no longer had the ability to move my thumbs, and my left hand was functionally paralyzed (功能性瘫痪). I was in constant pain because I lacked the muscle strength required to do these simple tasks.
After undergoing 40 years of this disease, I decided to step into the world of alternative (可替代的/非传统的) healing. I learned to allow the flow of grace to heal and care for me.
Healing is having the courage to love yourself, and trusting you deserve a better life and healthier existence. When I adopted that new belief system, my entire being started to shift into wellness.
Slowly and steadily, I was unlocking myself from the only existence I had known. I began to imagine a new life filled with joy and acceptance. If my heart healed, my body would heal.
As I became more in touch with the energy around me, I learned the incredible power of words and how we receive exactly what we ask for. I came to understand that everything in life is an offering, an opportunity to grow.
We always have a choice. We can remain trapped in past belief patterns and behaviors that no longer serve us, or we can create a new story, one that is truer to ourselves.
I learned that “forgiveness + compassion = healing”. When we forgive ourselves, and others, we heal the hurt and discomfort. When we are compassionate (有同情心的) and graceful, we attract the same. As a result of my efforts, I now live each day in joy and gratitude.
Since I can heal, anyone can heal. We are here to be in our heart’s desire and live our purpose.
4. How is the 2nd paragraph developed
A. By giving examples. B. By listing statistics.
C By making comparisons. D. By classifying facts.
5. What do we know about the author
A. She used to move in a wheelchair.
B. She was rescued by a doctor at 40.
C. She was in constant pain for a heart attack.
D. She has changed her mindset toward positivity.
6. Which of the following best describes her new belief system

Few people expected that a new song written and performed by Chinese pop singer-songwriter Daolang, who kept himself out of the spotlight for years, would go viral on social media. However, the track Luocha Haishi (A Market in a Faraway Land) — one of the 11 original songs from the 52-year-old artist’s latest album titled Shan Ge Liao Zai (Folk Songs Fading Away)— has topped the charts on several Chinese music apps and has become one of the biggest hits of the year so far. The song, which was released on July 19, got 8 billion streams by 6 pm on July 30, according to Tide News.
The curiosity surrounding the song seems to be driving its popularity. Social media users are fiercely debating if the lyrics have hidden meanings. Reading between the lines, some online listeners said the song is a stinging satire (尖锐的讽刺) on the current “unhealthy and chaotic (混乱的) environment in show business” in China, while others see Luocha Haishi as Daolang’s “revenge” on people who once criticized his music.
According to the album’s introduction, Shan Ge Liao Zai is a mix of Liaozhai Zhiyi, which is a collection of ghost stories by Pu Songling, and Chinese folk songs of different regions. The lyrics of Luocha Haishi is adapted from a Liaozhai Zhiyi tale by the same name, which talks about a man’s adventure in a faraway kingdom called Luocha. The people of this imaginary land regard ugliness as beauty, call black white and confuse between right and wrong.
Hong Qi, a singer-songwriter, said in an interview that Daolang loves traditional Chinese culture and folk music, and so it was very natural for the experienced musician to choose the theme that he did. Any other interpretation comes from people’s own imagination.
“As a researcher on classic Chinese literature, I appreciate Daolang, whose new song is creative and gives Liaozhai Zhiyi a new interpretation. I don’t know whether the song is targeted at a certain group of people or one person. What makes it meaningful is that it fuels discussions and makes people think, ”said Miao Huaiming, a professor at Nanjing University’s School of Liberal Arts.
8. What do the underlined words “go viral” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Take off. B. Lose out. C. Suffer criticism. D. Fight back.
9. Why is the track Luocha Haishi so popular on social media
A. Because it has got 8 billion streams in the world.
B. Because people are curious about its lyrics’ meanings.
C. Because it may be Daolang’s ”revenge” on some persons.
D. Because it is a stinging satire on the current music industry.
10. What can we learn about Shan Ge Liao Zai according to the text
A. The biggest hit of the year so far.
B. A man’s adventure in a faraway kingdom.
C. A collection of ghost stories by Pu Songling.
D. A mix of traditional Chinese culture and folk music.
11. What is the Miao Huaiming’s attitude towards Daolang’s new song
A. Neutral. B. Critical. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.

With the weather getting hot, bites caused by mosquitoes (蚊子) not only annoy people, but can result in many infectious diseases. Even when people wear long clothes, mosquitoes’ complex biting mechanism enables them to bite through clothes.
It would be great if clothing could be used to completely prevent people from getting bitten. Researchers tested graphene (石墨烯), a material that is incredibly thin but really strong, in order to find out if it can make clothing resistant (有抵抗力的) to mosquitoes.
In the lab experiment, volunteers exposed a small patch of skin on their arms or hands to roughly 100 miosquitoes for five minutes at a time. Researchers tested three different situations: volunteers wearing no protection, wearing cheesecloth (薄纱棉布), or wearing cheesecloth plus a thin graphene layer under it.
A video camera was then used to record and quantify mosquitoes’ behavior, including whether they landed on the skin, how long they stayed there, and whether they began to suck blood. The number of bites each volunteer got was also calculated based on how many swellings developed on their skin afterward. Finally, researchers dropped a little water or sweat on top of the graphene layer and studied the consequence, and they also tested a slightly different graphene layer called “reduced graphene”.
As a result, the number of mosquito bites on naked skin was the highest, about 16 on average;skin only protected by cheesecloth got the second, about 10 per five minutes’ exposure. The exciting finding was that there was no swelling (肿胀) developing on skin covered by the thin graphene layer under cheesecloth, which means the material is effective at preventing mosquito bites. The mosquitoes landed on skin totally uncovered or covered in cheesecloth about 23 times on average, and stayed for one to two paratively, the mosquitoes landed on skin covered in the graphene layer fewer than 10 times, and the length of their stay was much shorter. Besides, water or sweat can ruin the graphene layer, which allows mosquitoes to bite through it. But fortunately, the number of mosquito bites in either dry or wet conditions can be lowered as long as the graphene material is improved to a certain extent.
12. What is the purpose of this experiment
A. To compare different types of materials.
B. To test if graphene can stop mosquito bites.
C. To find useful ways to keep mosquitoes away.
D. To find some materials to prevent mosquito bites.
13 What are the 3 and 4th paragraph mainly about
A. Why graphene is a useful material. B. How the experiment was conducted.
C. How a video camera was used. D. What the final conclusion was.
14. What can allow mosquitoes to bite through the graphene layer
A. Applying water to graphene. B. Adding a thin graphene layer.
C. Making the graphene layer dry. D. Improving the graphene material.
15. Where can this text come from
A. A book review. B. A travel magazine.
C. An official document. D. A news report.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. D

When the farmer was old, and felt that his time had come to die, he called the three sons to him and said, ”My sons, there is a pot of gold hidden in the olive orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it.“
The sons tried to get him to tell them in what part of the orchard the gold was hidden; but he would tell them nothing more.

3. Where is it common for hosts to prepare presents for guests according to the text
A. India. B. Japan. C. Native America. D. China.
B
A By giving examples. B. By listing statistics.
C. By making comparisons. D. By classifying facts.
5. What do we know about the author

In the lab experiment volunteers exposed a small patch of skin on their arms or hands to roughly 100 miosquitoes for five minutes at a time.
13. What are the 3 and 4th paragraph mainly about
A. Why graphene is a useful material. B. How the experiment was conducted.
C. How a video camera was used. D. What the final conclusion was.
14. What can allow mosquitoes to bite through the graphene layer
A. Applying water to graphene. B. Adding a thin graphene layer.
C. Making the graphene layer dry. D. Improving the graphene material.
15. Where can this text come from
A. A book review. B. A travel magazine.
C. An official document. D. A news report.
