Unit 4
Natural Disasters
In some countries, rescue workers are not necessarily working for the government. They work for non-profit organizations whose mission is to help people suffering from emergencies (natural disasters or other emergencies). Such organizations often have very large networks across borders, so Australian firefighters, for example, may end up fighting fires in the US or Canadian rescue teams may help injured people in India. These organizations (such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent) are often supported by private donors, companies or individual donations. They will often fundraise(募捐) in wealthy countries during large natural disasters in poorer countries (as was the case, for example, when Haiti was hit by a major earthquake in 2010).

Listening and Talking
Sniffer dogs or detection dogs are used for all kinds of situations. Some are used only in natural disasters to find survivors; others are used in public places like airports, train stations, etc., to find drugs or terrorists. Some are used in crime scenes to find clues and some are even used to search for dangerous wildlife in forests or on coasts.
Tips:
Before an earthquake:
1. prepare an “earthquake kit”(地震包) near your bed; the kit should include drinking water, a flashlight with fresh batteries, and dry food.
2. Place an extra pillow, blanket, or quilt near the bed to be placed over the head during the earthquake and for warmth if trapped afterwards.
During an earthquake
1. if possible, get out of the building and rush into an open area.
2. if escaping from a building is impossible, get away from windows and doors; try to find shelters under structural beams(主梁) or under any heavy piece of furniture, like a large table or bed.
After an earthquake
1. After the major earthquake, remember that aftershocks may occur.
2. Leave the buildings(never use the elevators) quickly but not in a panic.
