第二节(满分25分)读后续写
Paragraph 1:
The week before school started, Mrs. Cane held another training course. Darla and Patty signed up immediately. In a class, Mrs. Cane asked the teenagers to play in turn. Darla came first, impressing others with her excellent performance. Mrs. Cane was pleased with Darla’s progress. “Well, I can tell who’s been practicing!” she smiled. Soon it was Patty’s turn. Everyone looked at the “talent” expectantly. Yet, Patty had not practiced and was way behind the rest, which was a shock for all. Patty was upset and absent until the class was over.
Paragraph 2:
Patty couldn’t stop thinking her poor performance on the way home. She realized she needed change if she still wanted to continue with tennis. The next day, Patty came to Darla’s team when they practiced to ask whether she could join. Warmly welcomed, she became a member of the team that day. Weak though she was, Patty enjoyed herself and worked hard at practice. She finally found that “natural talent” got her nowhere without diligence and she was able to join in the fun. That was one of the best lessons of her life.

M: I am going back home to Pakistan.
W: Oh great, how is the weather there
M: We have all the four kinds of weather there and they can be extreme sometimes. Like some regions are below freezing point and some can be 48 degrees Celsius.
W: This is interesting; here in Malaysia we don’t have much weather variation. And it stays almost the same throughout the year.
M: You must visit Pakistan; it’s amazingly beautiful in all weather conditions.
W: I so wanted to visit Pakistan. And I will make a plan soon. I must go now as check-in for my flight has started.
M: Thank you! It’s nice meeting you.
听下面一段对话,回答第11至第13三个小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
(Text 8)
W: How do you advise people to stay fit and healthy, Rashmi
M: Well, I was reading a scientific journal just this morning saying that working out at the gym is actually less effective than going for a walk regularly in the park.
W: Really Why did it say that
M: I think the idea is that if you do really intensive exercise, then you’re more likely to reward yourself with a bigger snack at the end of the session. But if you just stretch your legs often or take regular gentle exercise, it doesn’t have the same effect.
W: So what do you do You’re in pretty good shape.
M: Well, I try not to pay too much attention to my weight. I’ve never been a fan of the gym and I never go for a run — I find it boring. But recently I’ve got into road cycling. Every couple of weeks a few of us go out for a ride in the countryside — 40 or 50 kilometers. The scenery’s beautiful and it’s a great way to enjoy nature and stay fit at the same time.
听下面一段对话,回答第14至第17四个小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
(Text 9)
W: OK, Jack, so tell me about yourself. M: OK. I’m 24 years old and I’m a very active person. I don’t just mean that I play a lot of sports — although I do run and go to the gym several times a week. What I mean is that … I’m a person who likes to get involved in things. I’ve organized a lot of social events in my life. A recent one was against the building of a new car park in the center of my hometown. And that was successful actually; we got it stopped or at least delayed. So, as I was saying, I’m a firm believer in taking action.
W: And your current situation
M: Well, I graduated from university two years ago with a degree in journalism, but I haven’t been able to find a job that really suited me. To be honest, newspapers aren’t an easy world to break into, unless you have the right contacts. So instead, I decided on a fresh approach, which was to seek out companies I admire, basically any company or organization that’s working for some positive good in society. And that’s how I found you. And my hope is that when I find the right company, they’ll see that I have the right attitude and the right skills, so that we can both benefit from working together, um, yeah …
听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20三个小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
(Text 10)
M: I think the most valuable lesson anyone has ever taught me was when I was about 25. I was getting really frustrated with a guy I was working with. We’d set up our own web design business and Giles — that was the name of my business partner — would always get lost in little details and take ages making a first design to show the customer. And my dad said, “Look, you can’t change other people; you can only change the way you behave towards them.” So I accepted that was just Giles’s way — that he loved the little details — and I tried to think of it as a positive thing, and we’ve got on so much better ever since and worked much more effectively. So that’s become a sort of guiding principle for me in life — not to try to change others — and I have to say, it’s been very helpful to me.泉州九中与侨光中学2023秋季高二年联考英语试卷

For many travelers these days, finding a way to make travel more meaningful has become a top priority. They are increasingly pursuing journeys that include time to volunteer, work on a conservation project, protect endangered animals or to do other activities that allow for giving back while exploring a new part of the world. Here are some opportunities that combine travel with doing good deeds.
The Azores
The trips offer the opportunity to work on carefully selected projects alongside famous scientists while also enjoying encounters with some of the world’s most fascinating sea creatures in water. It allows participants to join a research team in the Azores that is studying the animals to support future conservation of the species. Advanced diving experience is required.
Red Sea, Egypt
Combining an opportunity for world-class diving with being part of an important research effort conducted by Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association, the seven-night trip includes learning how to gather water data with state-of-the-art scientific equipment and conducting onboard and underwater experiments.
Australia
Explore Queensland, Australia, while also supporting a registered charity that rescues farm animals from abuse(虐待), neglect, and situations where they’re in danger. Participants help with daily cleaning of barns (牲口圈) and cages, feeding, health checks, light repair, monitoring animals’ movements, and intensive care of ill, old and baby animals. The experience includes free accommodations with Wi Fi and a swimming pool.
Romania
Work with bears at Romania’s largest bear sanctuary (庇护所), a place that was created as a heaven for bears that have been abused. Located in the Carpathian Mountains, the sanctuary needs volunteers to help with preparing food, monitoring animal well-being and leading conservation tours. The sanctuary is home to 84 bears, with 20 more due to be rescued.

Standing in my office 25 years ago was a young astronomer. She had an incredible request that my team revise our software to do something beyond our design, and risk breaking it. All to carry out a seemingly impossible experiment — to prove that a massive black hole existed in our Milky Way. My initial “no way” gradually gave way in the face of her cheerful but unshakable determination. It was my first encounter with Andrea Ghez, one of the winners of Nobel Prize in Physics 2020.
For 25 years Andrea has been searching for evidence of a black hole at the heart of our galaxy. But the work has been defined by technology. Scientific equipment was never designed to meet Andrea's need — analyzing the image data at superspeed. But she was not to give in and our team just made the changes. And it worked! It was extremely hard and time-consuming, but Andrea persisted. Out of that effort came the first evidence of stars orbiting a black hole.
Andrea is fond of owing her success to the interaction between astronomers and engineers responding to the challenge. Science questions generate new technology and new technology generates new science. Andrea has always pioneered in this virtuous cycle (良性循环). She created UCLA Galactic Centre to promote research and technical developments.
Today, Andrea received the highest scientific recognition. But as she would be the very first to knowledge, this success represents the combined efforts of so many. From the theoretical prediction Albert Einstein, through the amazing telescopes and observatory locations, to the technical workers it is the product of thousands.
But in my eyes, it was just one person that had the persistence and focus to make the idea happen. That person is my friend and longtime colleague, the one who refused to take "no" for an answer -Andrea Ghez.
24.Why did Andrea Ghez pay the first visit to the author
A.To appreciate a software design. B.To demand a software revision.
C.To conduct an astronomy research. D.To promote a high-tech product.
25.What has Andrea Ghez been persisting in(坚信)
A.Carrying out outer space experiment. B.Developing superspeed equipment.
C.Looking for evidence of a black hole. D.Searching for new stars in the galaxy.
26.Which of the following best describes Andrea Ghezi
A.Pioneering and appreciative. B.Artistic and reserved.
C.Determined and disciplined. D.Innovative and controlling.
27.What does the author think of Andrea Ghez
A.Average B.Fashionable.
C.Troublesome. D.Admirable.

It’s known that reading is good for a child’s vocabulary and literacy skills, teaching them math or science concepts and helping them learn history. Apart from those, reading has another benefit. Have you read a story and felt tears well up because of a character’s suffering If so, that is because you have empathy (共鸣) for the character — and empathy can be learned through various fictions. “It’s a magic eye that sees into other people’s hearts,” explains author Cressida Cowell.
Research shows that human brains react differently to stories and facts. “Many more areas of your brain light up when you’re enjoying a story,” explains Miranda McKearney from EmpathyLab, an organization that builds empathy through reading. “Your brain thinks you are in the story ... This means you experience the characters’ thoughts as if they are real.”
Empathy helps you to read people’s emotions and work out the best way to respond. This skill, called emotional intelligence, can make it easier to communicate and connect with people. Research has shown that building empathy can lead to greater kindness and tolerance. One study found that children who read the Harry Potter novels — which tell stories about humans fighting against the evil — were less likely to behave unfairly towards powerless groups including refugees (难民).
This theory has been put into practice by St Michael’s Primary School. After reading The Boy at the Back of the Class — a story about a boy who is a refugee escaping from the war — students in that school were inspired to do a 10-mile walk for the non-profit organization Refugee Action. Their empathy also spurred them to raise 1,000 for people who were forced to leave their homes because of war.
Reading encourages children to empathise with others, which could potentially lead to several beneficial learning outcomes, new research suggests. For society to develop, creative, communicative and empathetic individuals really matter.
28. Why do readers cry about a character’s experience
A. They have magic eyes.
B. They want to show empathy.
C. They understand his/her feelings.
D. They have the same experience.
29. What does the author show by referring to the Harry Potter novels
A. The process of building empathy.
B. The benefits of developing empathy.
C. The definition of emotional intelligence.
D. The results of the school’s activity.
30. What does the underlined word “spurred” mean in paragraph 4
A. Reminded. B. Permitted.
C. Persuaded. D. Encouraged.
31. What might the author advise children to do
A. Read to develop empathy.
B. Become empathetic to others.
C. Put themselves in others’ shoes.
D. Read as many books as possible.
D
Since the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed in 1973, it has helped hundreds of species avoid extinction in the United States. The strong conservation policy has been used as a model in other countries. But it’s not as successful as it could be, a new study finds.
Researchers have discovered most species are not being protected until their numbers have become so low that their chance of recovery is slim.
“The ESA is an incredibly powerful, ambitious law for protecting our endangered wildlife. Yet, for decades, the agency primarily responsible for operating the ESA — the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) — has been starved of resources,” lead author Erich Eberhard says.
“As a result, we are very slow to give species the protection that they deserve. We typically wait until species are extremely rare and thus at extreme risk of extinction, and then, when a species is finally listed, the USFWS is straining its resources to try to recover it.”
In 1993, a study found that few species received protection under the ESA until their populations became very small. For the new study, researchers repeated the methods used in the earlier research to see whether protections have become better since the problem was first noted. They also looked at trends in “wait times” — the amount of time between when a species is identified as potentially needing protection and when it actually receives protection under the ESA.
“Our analysis suggests that, in the nearly 30 years since attention was first brought to this problem, we have not become more active in protecting endangered species,” says Eberhard.
The researchers found that the population sizes of species when they first became protected under the ESA are not statistically different from those in the 1993 study. They also discovered that there are long wait times between when a species is identified as likely needing protection and when they actually receive them.
“I can say that our study paints the current state of the ESA as a bit of cautionary (告诫的) tale for the strong conservation policy,” says Eberhard.
32. What problem does the USFWS have protecting endangered species
A. It takes ineffective measures. B. It is lacking in resources.
C. It can’t get timely information. D. It is an irresponsible organization.
33. What is the purpose of the new study
A. To try out new ways to protect endangered species.
B. To find out the exact number of endangered species.
C. To check the time needed to save endangered species.
D. To see if endangered species have been better protected.
34. How can the study help with animal conservation
A. It found out many more endangered species.
B. It pointed out the direction for the USFWS to act on.
C. It proved the role of the public in conservation.
D. It showed some effective ways to protect animals.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. The USFWS Needs Stronger Laws
B. The ESA Has Achieved Great Success
C. New Conversation Laws Are on the Way
D. Endangered Species Act Isn’t Working Well
第二节(共5个小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空自处的最佳选项。下面选项中有两项为多余选项。
For most people traveling abroad, their first choice is probably to make a beeline for (直奔) tourist sights. For me, I find lots of joy in grocery (食品杂货店) shopping on holiday.
As a vegetarian, finding restaurants that meet my needs is not always easy abroad. 36 The first thing I do, after dropping my bags off, is to go to a grocery store. That enables me to cook breakfast in the morning without walking around for hours trying to find “vegan breakfast” near me.
The variety of foods attracts me every time I travel somewhere new. In Malta, I found the most delicious chocolate-filled cakes, a product I would struggle to find even in the UK. 37 I was so delighted that I could enjoy such an unexpected treat. Another surprise was their selection of ice cream available even in the smallest grocery stores.
38 Looking for smoked tofu and corn pancakes turns into quite a mission whenever I visit Cluj-Napoca in Romania. There is usually only one variety of smoked tofu, sold in a very small tub (食品盒) and only in the cafeteria section. 39 That is because they are never available at the smaller ones.
Grocery shopping on holiday sounds unusual. But it means being involved in the day-to-day lives of a country’s citizens. I can pretend I am a local and put myself in their shoes. I can watch kids begging their parents for sweets, an international experience that needs no language, or watch couples pick up snacks and drinks for a party on a Friday night. 40
A. I ended up eating these every day for breakfast.
B. The challenge of finding food is interesting, too.
C. So I always make sure to book a place with a kitchen.
D. Grocery shopping was a vital part of the holiday experience.
E. It’s an act of understanding people as much as of buying food.
F. Corn pancakes always require a trip to the bigger grocery store.
G. By wandering around in a new country, I start to see what they value.

During the summer before Patty entered fifth grade, she decided to try a new sport. Swim training was nearly over and Patty was the fastest swimmer in her age group. She had always been the best. The neighborhood was offering a one-week tennis training course. Patty and her friend Darla got permission from their parents to join.
On Saturday morning, Darla’s mom took the girls to a store and bought them each a good, used tennis racket. “If you girls stick to tennis, then we’ll talk about a new racket. These will do for now.” The girls were excited about their new purchases. On Monday morning, at 7:00 a.m., Patty’s mom woke her up. “It’s time for tennis!” Patty covered her face. “Mom, it’s too early!” She made great effort to get out of bed and down to the breakfast table. Patty finished breakfast and ran to Darla’s house, then they walked to the court.
Mrs. Cane, the tennis coach, lined everyone up and started with the basics. After that, Mrs. Cane tirelessly taught them to practice their forehand and backhand. By the end of the week, Patty had made impressive progress. Mrs. Cane commented that Patty had lots of potential. Darla, on the other hand, was struggling. The other teenagers were having a tough time of it, too. Patty was the only one who seemed to get somewhere.
Since then, Darla had always been out in the August heat, practicing her serves (发球) or hitting the ball. Patty wasn’t really interested. She felt she was such a “natural” for tennis that she really didn’t need to practice. By the end of the summer, Darla began to get the hang of (学会) it. She joined a neighborhood junior tennis team. There would be matches every Thursday. Patty wanted to join as well, but she didn’t want to miss her favorite TV show. She told herself that she would join it when she got some free time. If Darla had fun, she would join the team in the spring.
