Sidney Keys,14-year-old, has started a youth-led book club program, with the support and help of his mom, to
help empower both himself and many other boys with mental or physical problems through literature.
Keys’ idea to create Books N Bros was born from his own setbacks and struggles. “I used to have a really bad
stutter and perform badly in school and I would get laughed at for it,” Sidney Keys, the founder of the book club
Books N Bros said. “Reading was kind of my escape from my stutter because in my head I was able to imagine
things and play out all the events clearly.” He said, “I wanted to start up Books N Bros so that I could talk to other
people, especially boys, about books I love in a relaxing way because it’s like a brotherhood.”
The reading club that he started at just 10 years old now has over 250“bros”aged 7 to 13 from the U.S. and
Canada, most of whom are changing actively and positively. Marvel’s Hero Project, which reveals the remarkable,
positive change young men make in their communities across the country and turns them into superheroes, selected
Keys to be featured in the Disney series.
“I always wanted to read books that had characters that looked like me, but now I see a comic book with me in
it,” Keys said delightedly. “It’s really awesome, especially when I hear my friends and teachers call me my
superhero name at school.”
As for the future of Books N Bros, Keys and his mom hope to expand the programs reach throughout the
country. “Getting Books N Bros in schools across America, we don’t want transportation to be an issue for getting
that physical brotherhood and bond. It just benefits so many people, and it keeps me going,” Keys explained.
24. What caused Sidney Keys to build Books N Bros
A. His mother’s support. B. His poor school performance.
C. His own sufferings. D. His literature experience.
25. Why was Keys chosen by Marvel’s Hero Project
A. Because he was called a superhero by people. B. Because he made a difference to other people.
C. Because he was brave to face his shortcomings. D. Because he looked like a role in the Disney series.
26. How did Keys feel when seeing himself in a comic book
A. Confused. B. Curious. C. Touched. D. Proud.
27. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Sidney Keys: a Real-life Superhero B. Books N Bros: Home to Young Boys

A woman held her phone tightly to her heart the way a church-goer might hold a Bible. She was anxious to
take a picture of an impressive bunch of flowers that sat not so far away, but first she had to get through a crowd of
others pushing their way to do the same. The cause of this was Bouquets to Art, one of the most popular events at
the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
Flower sellers were asked to create flower arrangements that respond to pieces of art on display, from ancient
carvings to contemporary sculptures. It’s extremely attractive and also memorable, to the point that it has become a
problem.
In recent years, the de Young received more than a thousand complaints from people who felt that cell phones
had spoiled their experience of the exhibit. Institutions of fine art around the world face similar problems as the
desire to take photographs becomes a huge attraction for museums, as well as something that upsets some of their
patrons (资助人). So the de Young responded with a kind of compromise:carving out “photo free” hours during the
exhibition’s six-day run.
One common complaint about the effect of social media on museum culture is that people seem to be missing
out on experiences because they are so busy collecting evidence of them. A study recently published in the journal
Psychological Science suggests there is some truth to this. It finds that people who keep taking photos of an exhibit
and posting them on social media rather than simply observing it, have a hard time remembering what they see. But
the issue is complex for the professionals running museums. Linda Butler, the de Young’s head of marketing and
visitor experience, acknowledges that not everyone wants a museum to be“a photo-taking playland”. Yet a lot of
people do and she believes that the de Young is in no position to judge one reason for buying a $ 28 ticket to be
more valid than another. “If we removed social media and photography,” she says. “We would risk becoming
irrelevant.”
28. What was the woman eager to do according to Paragraph 1
A. To get her phone. B. To escape the crowd. C. To take a photo. D. To push ahead.
29. How did the de Young respond to the dilemma
A. By setting periods without photo-taking. B. By making the exhibition free of charge.
C. By compromising with the government. D. By extending the free exhibition hours.
30. The recent study finds that the use of social media in museums may ________.
A. uncover the truth B. cause irrelevancy C. bring more pleasure D. play a negative role
第5页/共10页
31. Which of the following may Linda Butler support
A. Reducing admission prices .B. Catering to visitors.
C. Reserving judgement in public. D. Banning social media and photography.

Over the past few months, people in the United States have been watching some unusual television
advertisements. They are weird because they advertise a product that no American uses now or is likely to use in
the future.
The advertisements show that a product called golden rice will help prevent blindness in millions of children.
None of these children live in the United States. They live in countries where white rice forms the main part of the
diet. Too much white rice without other food causes lack of vitamin A. This can lead to blindness.
Golden rice h,as been developed to solve this problem through genetic (基因) engineering. As well as TV advertisements most news media carried stories on this great scientific development that would help some of the poorest children in world.
It could also save the science of genetic engineering. People in Europe and America have learned more about
genetically modified (转基因的) food over past few years. And the more they learn, the less they like what they
hear. People like science. And people like to eat food. But they would like the two things kept separate.
The truth is that a child would have to eat 9 kilograms of golden rice every day to get enough vitamin A. And
Gordon Conway of the Rockefeller Foundation, which helped the development of golden rice, says that the
advertisements have gone too far.
Perhaps the main purpose of golden rice is to get people to accept genetically modified food. The TV
advertisements sent a very clear message — if you don’t accept this technology then poor children will go blind. It
cost US $50 million get that message across. That would buy a lot of food for poor children.
What do the people who are said to benefit from golden rice think of being part of this great scientific and
social argument Nobody knows. Nobody has asked them.
32. What does the underlined word “weird” mean in the sentence
A. Thrilling. B. Amusing. C. Unusual. D. Rare.
33. What is the main reason why golden rice is advertised in the USA
A. Golden rice will prevent blindness in children. B. People have not accepted genetically modified food.
C. People know little about genetically modified food .D. Golden rice is the first genetically modified food.
第6页/共10页
34. According to the text, what kind of food do people in Europe and America like best
A. Food that is rich in vitamin A .B. Food produced without help from science.
C. F.ood produced in the third countries. D. Food produced through genetic engineering. 35 What is the author’s opinion of the TV advertisements A. They are not that useful. B. They need improvement.
C. They are unbelievably practical. D. They are put in a wrong place.

heads, food on the plate, clothes on their backs, and even if not a lot, always enough. Not knowing
they were poor, the kids just thought their mother was strict in money management. Melissa was really
glad about that.
Christmas was just around the corner. Although there wasn't budget for a lot of gifts, Melissa
planned to please the kids with a family party. She prepared weeks ahead of time, asking one by one
what the kids wanted for Christmas. Fortunately, Melissa managed to spare $ 80 dollars for the whole
family to enjoy the fun of Christmas shopping.
The big day arrived. Mellissa drove the kids to a nearby Walmart and gave each kid a twenty-
dollar bill. “Now, my children,” she announced, “you have two hours to pick a gift in the supermarket.
Then we will meet back at the gate.” Excited, the children scattered (四散) and rushed into the
supermarket.
Melissa smiled. She looked at her own note and put it back into her pocket. Well, the children's
shining faces were the most precious Christmas gift for her, weren't they Sitting in the car, she waiting
patiently, imagining what gifts the kids would choose. She couldn't wait to share their joy.
Two hours later, the kids came back one by one. Tom and Tick rushed to their mother, eyes
twinkling with excitement. They showed their gifts to Melissa and jumped with joy. The third child,
Ginger, was obviously left behind, who dragged her feet to the car. To everyone's surprise, Ginger was

【40题详解】
根据后文“This may be challenging, considering your present relationship with your parents, but do your best. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a discussion about trying to understand them better. Dear Jack,
Knowing you’re keen on the photos I posted on the WeChat Moments last week, I’m writing to share some relevant details.
This year, the three-day sports meeting started last Friday on school playground, which is a great platform for us to relax ourselves and feel the spirit of movement. Among almost 20 events, what I participated in was the 100-meter dash, which required me to speed up to the extreme in a short time. Unfortunately, I ultimately failed to perform well in the race, making me determined to grasp the opportunity next time through continuing efforts.
That’s all my experience of this event. Would you please share your school life with me Looking forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
读后续写范文
Driving home, everyone was talking about their gifts in high spirits except the youngest daughter, Ginger. Feeling puzzled, Melissa asked what she had bought for Christmas. “Nothing.” Ginger whispered, lowering her head. Other kids stopped talking and turned to Ginger. “Are you kidding Did you lose your money ” They stared at the little girl, their faces lighting up with surprise. Ginger shook her head and said that she gave the bill to a man who was begging outside the supermarket. The man in rags was standing in cold weather. There was no doubt that he was homeless and had a hard time.
“We have so much, but the homeless man doesn't have anything,” Ginger explained. “I am willing to share my happiness with him. I hope he can buy warm clothes or treat himself to a good dinner.” She added, with eyes shining with excitement. Hearing her daughters' words, Melissa felt a sense of pride swept through her. “What you did is right, Ginger. You are such a kind child that we are proud of you,” she said. Arriving home, they had a small party and the other kids offered to share their gifts with Ginger. It was the special experience that made the kids realize sharing is important.
