Dear Sara,
As we drove off from Columbia,I wanted to write a letter to you to tell you all that is on my mind.First,I want to tell you how proud we are.Getting into Columbia College shows what a great well-rounded student you are.Your academic, artistic, and social skills have truly blossomed in the last few years.Whether it is getting the highest grade in mathematics, completing your elegant fashion design, successfully selling your painted running shoes,or becoming one of the top speakers in Model United Nations, you have become a talented and accomplished young woman. You should be as proud of yourself as we are. 21*cnjy*com
College will be the most important years in your life.It is in college that you will truly discover what learning is about. This will be the period where you go from teacher-taught to master-inspired,after which you must become self-learner.So do take each subject seriously, and even if what you learn isn’t critical for your life, the skills of learning will be important to you forever.
Follow your passion in college.Take courses you think you will enjoy.Don’t be trapped in what others think or say.Do your best in classes, but don’t let pressure get to you.Your mother and I have no expectations for your grades. If you graduate and learn something in your four years,we would feel happy. So please don’t give yourself pressure.
I told your mom I’m writing this letter, and asked what she wanted me to say.She thought and said:“Just ask her to take care of herself.”Please listen to your mother and take care of yourself.
So please treasure your college years, make the best of your free time, and become an independent thinker;learn and grow through your successes and challenges.

Christmas in the United States is traditionally a time of gift-giving and family gatherings. But small towns across the country have their own traditions.
Middleburg,a small town in the state of Virginia,is known for its horses. For more than 50 years,Middleburg has organized a yearly Christmas parade(游行).Men and women ride horses through the woods and fields. They follow hunting dogs as they search for a wild fox.But first, these hunters ride in the yearly parade, wearing their bright red hunting clothes and hats.21*cnjy*com
John Hale,a citizen of Middleburg says many city people visit his town.“We have a lot of people from an urban area that come to visit, but it incorporates a lot of the o1d traditions.” The nighttime hay ride is one such tradition.Small groups gather under the moonlight on an open wagon filled with hay.The passengers sing as farm horses pull the wagon slowly across the fields.
There are some newer traditions, too.Trey Matheu works at the nearby Salamander Resort. He says a visit to Middleburg is a chance to slow down for a day.He says Middleburg can be a calming, peaceful place without tension.
“Middleburg is an opportunity to take a step back,to take a deep breath, and understand that even though life is moving on at a very fast pace, there’s really an opportunity where you’re allowed to step off for a little bit.”
Parade organizers say more than 13,000 people attend even in below-freezing weather. But if you ask,you will hear many different reasons why people come to watch the parade:
“I come here because I’m from a small town.I like how everybody comes together.”“I live right down that street;right there. And that’s my dog.”
Middleburg looks its best at Christmastime. That may be why so many people return each year.

While I was in my 4th month of pregnancy(妊娠期)with my second child,we were preparing for a trip to Louisiana, where Marshall’s family live,to celebrate Jane’s 2nd birthday. Two days before we were to leave,we got the shocking news that I was going to lose the baby. Not knowing when this would happen,we decided to continue with our trip.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
Since Marshall’s family lives on a 600-acre cattle farm, you often find that you have a lot of time to yourself to think when you are there. That is precisely what I did not want to do at this time.I told Marshall that I needed to get a good book to get lost in while I was there.I told him I heard the Harry Potter books were good,so he went out and got the first one for me.www-2-1-cnjy-com
During that trip,I totally got lost in the book, which was of great help during a time when I needed a distraction to forget about the sadness. In the book,I noticed the name “Seamus”.I vaguely remembered it was pronounced “Shamus” and I liked the sound of that.I mentioned it to Marshall and he liked it too.Toward the end of the trip,I had just 5 chapters left and I knew I was about to finish the first book, which I was pretty excited about.
Soon after we put Jane down to bed,I had started labor(分娩),so I was unable to read. The labor lasted 5 and 1/2 hours, but Marshall stayed there with me,sitting beside me and reading aloud the last 5 chapters of Harry Potter.I can never fully explain how much that helped me through the experience. And ever since then,Marshall and I both have been fans of the Harry Potter books. We remember how they helped us get through that time of our lives.
We were sad to have lost the baby, but the name Seamus started our journey toward adoption. And we gave this name to our adopted son.Though our Seamus doesn’t have a drop of Irish blood in him,the name fits him perfectly.
28.Why did the writer want a good book during the trip
A.Because the trip to Louisiana would take a long time.
B.Because she didn’t want to think of losing her baby.
C.Because she had nothing else to do except reading.
D.Because a good book could help her enjoy her trip.
29.According to the story,we can know that the Harry Potter books _________________.www.21-cn-jy.com

30.The writer named her son Seamus because ___________________.
A.she wanted to keep her trip in memory B.she loved this name very much
C.her son doesn’t have Irish blood D.it is a perfect name for a boy

A.Funny Stories of My Family B.Seamus And Harry Potter

Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty. In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five,people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old.【版权所有:21教育】
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five.The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.
The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that,as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.21·cn·jy·com
The researchers considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.
32.We can learn from the research that ________.
A.only when people get older, will they feel happier
B.older people usually have no worries in their life
C.stress levels among the youngest are the highest of all
D.older people are more likely to be thankful in life
33.According to the researchers, what is probably the reason why people grow happier when they get older
A.When people get older, they can’t remember bad experiences.
B.When people get older, they have no young children to care about.
C.When people get older, they learn to adjust their feelings.
D.When people get older, they don’t care about their feelings.
34.What do you think the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is
A.A Gallup organization. B.A popular science magazine.
C.A university in New York. D.A research institution
35.What would the writer probably deal with in next paragraph 2-1-c-n-j-y

B.Advice to the old people on how to live longer.
C.Why women at all ages are more sad, stressed and worried.

We are all faced with challenges constantly in every area of our lives. 36
The truth is that you will have to deal with difficult problems throughout your life, whether it is in your personal life or career. Most of us get really afraid and run away from problems because we don’t want to accept reality.Running away from your problems is the worst thing you can do to deal with the challenges you are faced with. Here are some tips for you on learning how to deal with everyday challenges.
Please bear in mind that you shouldn’t overact when coming across challenges.Overacting to a problem will cause you to make bad decisions. 37 Next time you are faced with a challenge, stay calm so you can make smarter decisions.
38 If you cannot accept reality, you will feel very frustrated with your life.Once you can accept reality, you will be able to be calmer and think more clearly about how to get a step closer towards your goals every day.
Many people make a habit of blaming others for all their problems. They fail to take full responsibility for the decisions they have made in life. The more you blame others for the challenges you are faced with, the more you will make people dislike you and not want to be around you. 39
Don’t compare your lifestyle with others.Of course,it is really difficult not to compare ourselves with other people. However, the more often we do that, the more frustrated we will feel. 40 The key thing to remember is that you create your own story and success in life.
A.Accept the reality of the present moment.
B.Try to look at change as a positive challenge, not as a threat.
C.There will always be a person that may have accomplished more than you.
D.Our focus may entirely be on how we can deal with the challenge that has come our way.
E.When we are not in control of our emotions,we will make decisions that we will regret later.
F.However, most people have a hard time accepting and dealing with these challenges that arise.
G.As a result, the first thing you should do when faced with a personal challenge is not point fingers at others.
