Located among the forests where eagles fly overhead, Jabal Sawda has long been one of Saudi Arabia’s best places for mountaineers. At 2,999 m, Jabal Sawda had been considered the kingdom’s highest peak (高峰) until twin mountaineers, Matthew and Eric Gilbertson, climbed it in 2018, finding it to be about three meters shy of Jabal Ferwa.
For more than a decade, the twins have traveled to one country after another around the world, rewriting the mountain record books about places across the Middle East and West Africa. So far they have reached the peaks of more than 100 countries and newly identified the highest points in Togo, Guinea-Bissau and Ivory Coast.
Matthew, a research scientist at Lockheed Martin in Palo Alto, California, and Eric, an instructor in mechanical engineering at Seattle University, said their work was encouraged by a love for mountaineering. “If we’re going to go through all the effort to visit a country and visit the highest mountain, we want to be sure that we have indeed visited the highest mountain,” Matthew said. “We consider it assistance to future mountaineers to have an accurate survey done so that they can focus their efforts on getting to whichever peak they want to get to.”
The twins’ love of mountaineering began when they were children with family trips to the Great Smoky Mountains in the southeastern United States. When they were students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), they started climbing as many mountains as possible. In 2012, after achieving their goal of reaching the highest point of each U. S. state, they turned their attention to the rest of the world.

Electric bicycles have established themselves as an important mode of transportation worldwide, and their fame continues to improve as the electric vehicle revolution (革命) is slowly spreading over the world. Embracing the advantages of electric bikes not only benefits the economy but also improve the general well-being of the population.
Germany, in particular, has witnessed a remarkable upswing in the e-bike industry, displaying no signs of slowing down despite initial hesitations earlier this year. In May, favorable weather made it more convenient to ride e-bikes, which contributed to the increase of e-bike sales. By the end of May this year, Germany had produced over one million electric bikes, marking a significant five-percent growth compared to the same period last year. This growth is particularly impressive considering the challenging economic climate the country has faced.
Burkhard Stock, the Managing Director of the Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV), discussed this unbelievable turn of events in a report published by German e-bike publication E-Bike News. He mentioned that they had anticipated a slowdown in the market throughout the first half of the year. However, it turned out that a positive change in the industry was seen in May.
ZIV, a famous organization in the German and international bicycle industries, plays a key role as a governing body and major stakeholder (股东) in the European e-bike field. About 90 percent of all electric bikes produced by German companies are made by ZIV member companies. Their presence ensures the industry’s steady growth and development.
In addition to the market within the country, German-made electric bicycles have gone to other parts of the world. In the first quarter of this year, an astonishing 190, 000 electric bikes were sold abroad, meaning a significant 28-percent increase compared to the previous year. A majority of these electric bikes were transported to European Union and European Free Trade Association member countries. It is expected that the German e-bike market will produce a total of two million electric bicycles by the end of this year.

I have spent the last few months with Yang, my new dog, one I am co-raising to be a service dog. He will stay with me for 14 months or so. If he proves to be good enough, he will be sent to the guide dog school for further training and eventually become a seeing-eye dog.
Dogs help people in lots of ways, but service dogs are different from working dogs, therapy (治疗) dogs, and emotional support animals. Service dogs are trained to do specific tasks for people with disabilities. They can pull wheelchairs, get medicine, remind you to take your medicine, help keep you stable while walking, and alert (警示) you to important sounds or dangerous things in your way. Service dogs have lots of different skills, depending on the disability they are trained for.
No matter how you get a service dog, they usually go through a tough training program with an experienced trainer. In the last month of training, the service dog spends time with you and the instructor. The instructor teaches the dog to help you, and tells you how to command, handle, and care for the dog.
Service dogs need obeying skills and other very special skills. When you think about how to get a service dog, consider finding one with relevant characters. They should be calm, be able to learn and hold onto information. To train a service dog, you should start with basic skills like focusing on you, ignoring disturbing factors and being able to stay on task in new places with new people, smells, and animals.
It’s important to keep your dog healthy so that they can best help you. Give your dog access to plenty of fresh water and a balanced diet, and keep their vaccinations (疫苗) updated. Yearly visits to the vet are also important to make sure you catch any changes in your dog’s health.

One neighbor just had a baby so he gave Alex two bottles. And some neighbors gave Alex two diapers and some gave her three. Alex later said. “They were holding onto their own diapers too, which I understand.”
The disaster turned into a crisis for countless parents like Aubrey and Alex, who had to escape quickly and now needed basic supplies to keep their children alive and safe.
The wildfires claimed the lives of over 100 people, while many more remained missing. Officials on Maui warned that their supplies were running out.
Aubrey and Alex decided to travel to another island, Oahu, where they could stay in the home of Alex’s brother’s. There, they had more access to supplies like diapers and milk. Then they managed to contact with volunteers and left in a lifeboat for Oahu. Thinking those helpless people, they cried in pain.

Located among the forests where eagles fly overhead, Jabal Sawda has long been one of Saudi Arabia’s best places for mountaineers. Dogs help people in lots of ways, but service dogs are different from working dogs, therapy (治疗) dogs, and emotional support animals. Service dogs are trained to do specific tasks for people with disabilities. They can pull wheelchairs, get medicine, remind you to take your medicine, help keep you stable while walking, and alert (警示) you to important sounds or dangerous things in your way. Service dogs have lots of different skills, depending on the disability they are trained for.
No matter how you get a service dog, they usually go through a tough training program with an experienced trainer. In the last month of training, the service dog spends time with you and the instructor. The instructor teaches the dog to help you, and tells you how to command, handle, and care for the dog.
Service dogs need obeying skills and other very special skills. When you think about how to get a service dog, consider finding one with relevant characters. They should be calm, be able to learn and hold onto information. To train a service dog, you should start with basic skills like focusing on you, ignoring disturbing factors and being able to stay on task in new places with new people, smells, and animals.
It’s important to keep your dog healthy so that they can best help you. Give your dog access to plenty of fresh water and a balanced diet, and keep their vaccinations (疫苗) updated. Yearly visits to the vet are also important to make sure you catch any changes in your dog’s health.

Now on Maui, situations were becoming worse. Many more houses were burnt down, leaving countless people homeless. People lacked drinking water, food and clothes. Some began to fall ill and what’s worse, it was hard for them to get access to medicine, which was more challenging for parents with children. They were in great need of help. The government were taking action. But urgent need for food, medicine and shelter was still hard to be achieved. So more and more volunteers were joining.
Together with other volunteers, Alex and his brother collected large quantities of supplies on Oahu. Considering those helpless parents with children, Alex mainly collected baby supplies, including milk and diapers. His brother and other volunteers collected lots of tents, clothes and medicine. They arranged boats to deliver the necessities to Maui as quickly as possible. Many doctors and nurses on Oahu volunteered to head for Maui to offer timely medical assistance. Thanks to the efforts from those dedicated people, people in need on Maui were getting out of trouble.

W: Well, at first I was afraid it’d be boring. But it turned out to be amazing.
M: Why
W: Though I’ve lived in this city for over 20 years, there were many places that I hadn’t visited before. I saw parts of my city I had never seen before with my friend.
M: Where did you go together
W: We went to the zoo and the biggest park in town, and we also went to see an opera together. But what impressed me most was swimming in the lake in the mountains.
M: Did your friend have a good time
W: You bet. She said she would come again next year.

M: French is so hard! Do you know what’s the most difficult part for me
W: The grammar
M: Yes, but only one particular area. I can’t remember if a word is male or female.
W: You have to just remember those.
M: But there are so many, and I can’t find a pattern! For instance, the moon is female and the sun is male. I know those are common in different languages. But a chair is female and hair is male. I think that hair would be considered female! I just don’t get it.
W: It can be very confusing. Don’t let it get you down, Andy. You’re doing well this term. One bad quiz score will hardly affect your grade. Your reading is excellent and so is your writing. You’ll get used to this part of the language soon enough.

M: Hello, Madam. My name is Eric. I’m here to help you. Is that OK
W: Yes, that’s fine. Where am I What happened
M: It looks like you’ve been in an accident, but everything is fine. I think you might have hit your head a little though.
W: My car looks fine, though. I don’t see any broken glass or anything.
M: That’s because you were hit from behind. You were very lucky, because you were pushed into the crossing. A car almost hit you on your driver’s side.
W: I should get out of the car. I need to find my insurance and talk to the other driver.
M: You should stay where you are, Madam. Just in case The ambulance has just arrived, and they will be here shortly to help you.
W: But I don’t understand. I was on my way to work and then—why am I stopped here
M: Madam, you’re going to be fine. I saw the whole thing, and it wasn’t your fault. I’m going to talk to the police now.

W: Yes, I’m going on vacation next week, and I need a book to take with me.
M: What do you usually like to read
W: I love classics with strong female characters. I get tired of reading about men all the time. I’m looking for something easy and with a happy ending. I don’t want to think too hard while I’m traveling!
M: Where are you going Sometimes it’s nice to read about the place you’re visiting.
W: England.
M: You might like an author like Jane Austen, who writes with a lot of humor. Or Emily Bronte, another classic author. Her writing is full of emotion. It isn’t terribly enjoyable, but it always has powerful female characters.
W: I love Austen and Bronte, but I didn’t think about mysteries. Are they frightening
M: Not at all. The main story is about solving the crime, rather than the murder. I can suggest a few titles.
W: I hope I will have time to finish the book! I’m traveling with my children, and they often interrupt my reading.
M: Let’s look for some books for them, too. We have a wonderful youth section right over here.

Now, Mr. Toper. When I walked into the room, I knew something was wrong. You looked paler than usual; some of your fingers were even white. I noticed you were wearing a winter jacket, and it’s 70 degrees outside. You seemed very tired, and you were moving your left leg around uncomfortably. I wanted to get the test results before I mentioned what I thought of your condition. Now that I have them, I can tell you for certain that you have bad circulation. Your blood is just not moving around your body well. That’s why you feel especially cold in your fingers and feet. Not only that—your leg probably aches a lot because you don’t walk enough. If you don’t take care of your body better, you could be sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of your life. Now, I know it’s harder at your age to be active, but you need to become a rather sporty 65-year-old. Before I put you on any medication, we’re going to try to get you better naturally. First, you should take a walk every day. Start out slowly the first week. Add more time until you’re walking 50 minutes each day. Let’s see if that helps, and then you can come back to see me in a month.
