For decades, the San Francisco Bay area has been the heart of the computer technology industry. Many of the biggest technology companies have their headquarters in the area called Silicon Valley. But the area has not always been associated with charity.
Now,a new generation of entrepreneurs(企业家)appears to be changing Silicon Valley. One example is Marc Benioff,a donor(捐赠者),who has called on wealthy donors to give more to their communities. He also is the founder of Salesforce. com,a computer services company in San Francisco who has helped build a children’s hospital and given millions of dollars to non-profit organizations in the city.
Money from the technology industry has also started to change the face of charity. Benjamin Soskis writes about the history and ideas behind charity in America. His articles have appeared in The Atlantic magazine and a number of major publications. He says, traditionally, donors have given after they spent much of their lives building up wealth. Usually donors are in their 70s. But an increasing number of people appearing on the list of top donors are younger than 40 years of age. Benjamin Soskis says that is something new. “There’s a whole new model that’s appearing in which people give and accumulate at the same time. ”
Some of the young donors on this year's top 50 list have started to change in the way people see charity. That is especially the case in the San Francisco area, where giving money and making money appear to be coming together. “I think it's fair to say that charity is now a part of the Silicon Valley identity. ”

Can you imagine a world without chocolate? It's not something I'd 1ike to do. so I was relieved to read that there’s a university with a programme to safeguard the future of chocolate!
The University of Reading,in England, has just opened a new clearing house for all the world’s new cocoa varieties. They must be quarantined(隔离检疫)before they can be grown. Why? Cocoa production hit a record high of 4. 4 million tons last year but about 30%of the precious crop is regularly lost to pests and diseases. Now we don’t want that,do we?
Demand for chocolate has been increasing faster than the world supply of cocoa and researchers think that new varieties are key to solving this problem.
The University of Reading has been protecting the quality of the new crops since 1985,after it took over the task from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew,London. And it has improved its facilities. The leader of the institution’s cocoa project,Professor Paul Hadley, says,“One of the main issues concerning cocoa improvement is the supply of reliably clean, healthy, interesting cocoa material. ”
The cocoa centre has a collection of 400 plant varieties and their greenhouse uses a lot of energy to keep them in tropical conditions. After up to two years in quarantine, clean and safe seeds are sent to some 20 countries, including several in West Africa. That’s where 75%of the cocoa used for chocolate worldwide comes from. The crop is extremely important for the local economy:it employs about two million people.
Professor Hadley says he works with a small team of skilled technicians who look after the collection. And more of us seem to count on them now.
The scientist says,“there is some concern within the industry that demand is increasing constantly, particularly in countries like China, where the standard of living is increasing and people are getting a taste for different chocolates. ”
24. What is the text mainly about?
A. Safeguarding cocoa seeds. B. Planting cocoa worldwide.
C. Keeping cocoa in greenhouse. D. Finding the new market for cocoa.
25. The institution’s cocoa project is to_______.
A. have cocoa skin removed B. offer more jobs to people
C. ensure the quality of cocoa D. supply cocoa for two million people
26. What does the last paragraph tell us?
A. The taste of chocolates is changing.
B. Demand for cocoa is increasing fast.
C. People are concerned about cocoa varieties.
D. Chinese have a long history of eating chocolates.
27. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To educate. B. To advertise. C. To warn. D. To inform.

What are American high schools like? Well, I’m happy to tell you what I know. When I started school here, it had already been a week since the school opened. At this school, freshmen usually go on a trip for about three days at the beginning of school. Unfortunately I missed that wonderful trip, which would have been the best time to get to know my classmates. I was really sad. I wished I’d known about it earlier. ? ? Despite the disappointment, however, I gradually adapted to my new life and school. There is a space in the basement of the teaching building where students chat and meet each other. As we do not always have the same classrooms and classmates, the school wants us to get to know each other there. Students usually come to school early, sit in that space and have fun. Around the space, there are many lockers for students to leave their books in, so that students do not have to carry a heavy schoolbag everywhere.
It really surprises me that we have almost no textbooks. We only have textbooks for World History and Algebra 2 and they are big and heavy, like bricks. For other classes, we only need binders (活页夹) with paper in them. Without textbooks, students learn things freely and actively. For example, my humanities teacher just teaches us what is in her mind at the time. We never know what we will learn. ? ? Another difference between American schools and Chinese schools is that American schools care about students’ morality more than their academic studies. For example, if you do not finish your homework, you will just be asked to do it later, but if you cheat or lie, you will get a warning or even be kicked out. ?? ? I think that most students here are good at schoolwork as well, but compared to Chinese students, they can make learning a more joyful experience. I think we should take the good points from our two different kinds of education to perfect our approach to studying.
28. What was the writer sad for?
A. He was late for school. B. He missed the trip at the beginning of school.
C. He didn’t know anyone. D. American students looked down upon him.
29. Why do students go to the basement of the teaching building?
?A. To attend class. ? B. To share a classroom. C. To have fun. ? D. To meet teachers.
30. How do teachers in the US teach the students?
?A. However they want to.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? B. They use bricks. ?C. Some use textbooks; some teach freely. ? D. They always teach as required.?
31. According to the passage, in American high schools, ________.
A. you are likely to be kicked out if you cheat B. you’ll be punished if you do not finish your homework C. students are better at school work than Chinese students D. students care much about the grades they get
D
Coral reefs(珊瑚礁)are not just beautiful to look at,but also very useful. They shelter nearly
25% of ocean life and provide food for billions of people. However, like many other species, this amazing ecosystem(生态系统)is in danger of dying out!
There are two main reasons for the destruction—the rising carbon dioxide levels caused by global warming as well as human influences like bottom operation. While not much can be done about the former, the loss caused by the latter can be reduced.
Bottom operation involves dropping nets to the ocean bed and then dragging them up when filled with fish. This action damaged the ocean floor, causing the coral branches to separate from the reefs. While that is very discouraging, the good news is that if these branches are found quickly, they can be saved. At present, that work is being performed by volunteer divers. But the method has only limited success because they cannot stay long underwater, nor reach depths of over 200 meters where some of the deep-sea coral grows.
However, this is not the case for Coralbots—the robots that can constantly seek out broken branches. A team of ‘coralbots’,each individually working to simple rules will piece together damaged bits of coral, allowing them to regrow. They are programmed to be able to distinguish between other things and the coral. The robots work together in groups, similar to bees. If one coralbot is damaged then the others will still be able to complete the task.
Dr Lea-Anne Henry said:“The project of using coralbots offers us the possibility to restore(修复)the fun_ction of reefs. It is in the final stage of testing. Once ready, the researchers hope to build hundreds of them and use them effectively in the waters off Scotland and then hopefully in the oceans across the world. ”
32. Which of the following is a cause of the danger that coral reefs are facing?
A. The appearance of new creatures. B. The seriously polluted sea water.
C. The activities of volunteer divers. D. Human activities like bottom operation.
33. Compared with volunteer divers,coralbots ______________.
A. can stay longer underwater B. must work as bees do
C. can distinguish what is coral D. can never be damaged
34. What does the underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Coralbots B. Broken branches C. working bees D. Bits of coral
35. We can infer from the passage that _______________.
A. bottom operation has affected most underwater creatures
B. broken branches of coral can regrow if saved in time
C. hundreds of the coralbots have worked well in the oceans
D. with the coralbots all damaged coral reefs can be restored

36 Besides, in top-grade restaurants, you can always ask for a pair of knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough. The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal dinner and particularly if the host thinks you’re in the country for the first time, he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes.
The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes. 37 If you wish to have your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.
38 In formal dinners, there are always“public” chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. 39 It is always polite to eat the food. If you do not eat it, just leave the food in the plate.
People in China tend to over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed. 40 Or you will always overeat!
A. This is a sign of genuine friendship and politeness.
B. Chinese food contains much less calorie.
C. Soup then will be served to be followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to dumplings.
D. When you have had enough, just say so.
E. Of course, the main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork, but that’s only superficial.
F. Some Chinese people are so hospitable that they use their own chopsticks to put food into the plates of their guests.
G. Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food into the plates of their guests.
