Born in Belgium on April 4, 1527, Abraham Ortelius is known as the inventor of the atlas (地图集). During that time, there was renewed interest in the study of classical antiquity, history, Greek, and philosophy across Western Europe.
Ortelius was fond of new discoveries and travel, so he began collecting books, prints, paintings, wall maps, and coins from all over Europe. During one trip to Poitiers, France, Ortelius met cartographer (制图员) Gerard Mercator, who inspired him to start producing maps himself. Ortelius began his career as a map colorist for the Guild of Saint Luke in Ant- werp in 1547, and then became a map designer at the Plantin company in 1587.
Ortelius’s first atlas was called Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. First printed in 1570, it featured a collection of 53 maps, all the same style and size, printed from metal plates and arranged by continent, region, and state. The atlas was soon gaining traction. It had to be re- printed 4 times in the first year of publishing. Between 1570 and 1612 the atlas was published in 42 editions in 7 languages.
The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum atlas featured one of Ortelius’s most famous maps- Typus Orbis Terrarum. The hand-colored map covered the entire world from pole to pole, revealing the shape and size of different continents. At the time the map was made — much of North America was yet to be explored — so naturally, large parts of the geography were merely theoretical. The eastern seaboard stuck out eastward, illustrating the inaccurate measurements of longitudes (经度) at the time. It’s also interesting to note that the Mississippi River did not appear on the map, and there was no sign of the Great Lakes.
However, the map actually contains some of the best collection work of the period, and represents a huge shift in the history of mapmaking. It is the hallmark world map of the first atlas ever published.
24.What can be inferred about Ortelius
A.He was an inspiration to Mercator. B.He was a great collector of Asian art.
C.He had a great curiosity about the world. D.He became a map designer at age 20.
25.What does the underlined word “traction” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Awareness. B.Insight. C.Evidence. D.Popularity.
26.What was a problem with Typus Orbis Terrarum
A.It just covered the European continent. B.It lacked detail and preciseness.
C.It was black and white in color. D.It was poorly printed.
27.What is the author’s attitude toward the map
A.Appreciative. B.Uninterested. C.Critical. D.Worried.

A large body of evidence shows that exercise strengthens our brains. In studies, active people generally have more gray matter. Gray matter is made up of the brain’s essential, working neurons(神经元). Fit people also tend to have healthier white matter, which supports and connects neurons. Partly as a consequence of these, exercise is strongly linked with lower risks of dementia(痴呆) and other memory problems with age.
But exercise may increase exposure to air pollution and previous studies have shown the opposite effects of air pollution on the brain. So, what happens then
Some researchers looked at thousands of middle-aged adults from the UK Bio-bank. The researchers characterized their physical activity patterns depending on the amount of physical activity collected from the devices researchers asked them to wear. They then evaluated air pollution levels where the people lived, asked the participants to complete brain scans, and finally, compared them. Researchers found that exercise was linked to excellent brain health for people in areas with little air pollution. But the beneficial associations almost disappeared for exercisers living in areas with even moderate(中度的) air pollution. They had less gray matter and more unhealthy white matter than people living and exercising away from pollution, even if their workouts were similar.
Extending these findings in a follow-up study, the same scientists found that the more people exercised, the less likely they were to develop dementia over time—provided their local air was clear. When it was moderately polluted, though, they had an increased long-term risk of dementia, whether they exercised or not.
These studies increase the urgency for developing more-effective regulations related to air quality. Public policy could be used to address people’s exposure to air pollution during exercise. For example, since a great amount of air pollution comes from traffic, promoting running or bicycling along paths far from heavy traffic may be more beneficial.
28.What does the author intend to tell us in the first paragraph
A.The reasons behind dementia. B.The benefits of workouts on brains.
C.The working process of our brains. D.The exercise suitable for people with dementia.
29.Why did the researchers ask the participants to wear the devices
A.To help know their exercise patterns. B.To monitor the local air quality.
C.To record their daily routine. D.To warn them of healthy problems.
30.What can we learn from the studies
A.Memory problems should be cured.
B.The structure of the brain is complicated.
C.People face many risk factors for dementia.
D.More rules against air pollution should be made quickly.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Air quality has to be improved urgently.
B.Most people do exercise in a wrong way.
C.Air pollution may reduce benefits of exercise.
D.People with diseases should do more exercise.

An asteroid(小行星)is moving very fast toward Earth, threatening every human being on the planet. Humanity has one shot to save itself with brave, selfless heroes piloting a spacecraft into the universe to destroy the asteroid.
But that’s the movies. On Monday evening, NASA showed what the reality was like. There was an asteroid, but it wasn’t threatening the Earth. And there was a spacecraft, relying on advanced technology from the Earth. The human heroes of the mission were actually at a physics and engineering lab between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.And there was a collision(碰撞). In this case it was the final act of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test(DART), a spacecraft that was launched in November, 2021 and then raced around the sun for 10 months as it pursued its target—a small space rock, Dimorphos, seven million miles from Earth.
“For the first time, humanity has demonstrated the ability to change the orbit of an asteroid,” said Ralph Semmel, director of the lab. In its last moments, the spacecraft sent back a series of photographs. DART had spotted Dimorphos only an hour earlier, as a dot of light. Then, Dimorphos grew bigger and bigger, until its surface filled the screen. The engineers were on their feet, cheering.“Normally, losing signal from the spacecraft is very bad,”Semmel said. “But this time, it was the ideal outcome.”
With movies like “Deep Impact”, Hollywood has long been enthusiastic about the prospect of disaster raining down from the universe. In reality, big asteroids that would cause planet-wide destruction occur very rarely, once every 10 million years or so. Hence, planners at NASA and elsewhere devote their attention to smaller ones in space, which would not set off mass extinctions, but can release more energy than a nuclear bomb. If any of those asteroids turns out to be on a collision course with Earth, the DART mission shows that changing its orbit is a realistic possibility.
32.What’s paragraph 1 describing
A.A movie plot. B.A natural disaster. C.A witness account. D.A virtual experiment.
33.What’s the mission of DART
A.Racing around the sun. B.Tracking asteroids in space.
C.Changing the orbit of Dimorphos. D.Establishing a permanent space lab.
34.Why were the engineers cheering
A.They obtained clear desired photos. B.They made a safe landing from space.
C.DART crashed Dimorphos into pieces. D.DART completed its mission successfully.
35.What’s the significance of the DART mission
A.Preventing the earth from being destroyed. B.Providing a solution to an asteroid impact.
C.Fueling people’s interest in Hollywood movies. D.Increasing chances of humans going into space.

I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.
Those were difficult times. People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding. Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump(水泵)did have clean water, we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump wasn’t working, we had to walk five kilometers to the closest stream.
But I was happy. I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived, Dad drove me to Uncle Jita’s house and left. Once he saw me, Uncle Jita announced, “Tomorrow we’re going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera, Amy. You can take photos of what you see.”
The following day, we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off, there was ... nothing in front of us. “I don’t want to take pictures of this,” I complained.
Uncle laughed, “Start walking, Amy. I promise you’ll be surprised.” After some time, I could see the outline of a forest in the distance. A little closer, there was a man waving to us.
“That’s Kabir. The forest you see is his. He planted every single tree.” As we walked towards Kabir, Uncle explained that thirty years ago, the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise(天堂).
Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face. “Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some ” he asked. “Of course!” I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees. I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places. All because of the efforts of one man.
Like Uncle said, Kabir’s forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers. During lunchtime, Kabir explained how, by planting trees, it was possible to stop the land from eroding(侵蚀).
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

The engineers were on their feet, cheering. ”Normally, losing signal from the spacecraft is very bad,“ Semmel said. ”But this time, it was the ideal outcome.“”(DART仅在一小时前发现了Dimorphos,就像一个光点。
根据最后一段“If any of those asteroids turns out to be on a collision course with Earth, the DART mission shows that changing its orbit is a realistic possibility.”(如果这些小行星中的任何一颗与地球发生碰撞,DART任务表明改变其轨道是一种现实的可能性。)可知,DART任务的意义是为小行星撞击提供解决方案。故选B项。

Hearing this, I turned to my uncle, “I think we can plant trees too.” Grabbing the camera in my hand, I added with excitement. “I’ve got a plan! I’ll show them the photos of Kabir’s magical forest! ” Seeing Uncle and Kabir’s encouraging smile, I immediately set down to my work, busily pressing my shutter and capturing the amazing scenes in the forest. When Uncle and I went back to the village several days later and showed these wonderful pictures to my neighbour, they were stunned by the beauty of the forest. “It was the trees that turned the place into a paradise! ” We then explained our tree-planting plan to the villagers, which was quickly accepted by all of them.
In the years that followed, people in our village worked hard to carry out our plan. Instead of cutting down our forest, we started to plant trees, which has eventually helped protect the soil and stopped the land from eroding. Thanks to the trees, the water has been purified and we finally have clean and stable water supply. With our joint efforts, our village is now surrounded by small thriving forests with blooming flowers, lively animals and crystal-clear streams running through. Witnessing the gradual change of our village, we came to realize that only when we live in harmony with nature can we have a brighter future.

W: What does it take to be a head chef Paul Heaton is here to tell us all about it.
M: Thanks! After I left school, I tried a few other things, including the local supermarket, but nothing really interested me until I got a job as a kitchen assistant. It was hard, dirty work and the pay wasn’t great either. On the positive side, I was in a really busy kitchen where the top chefs were highly skilled and during my breaks I could watch and learn.
W: Those days are behind you now, aren’t they
M: Yes, these days I’m a head chef, so I’m responsible for organizing the kitchen. This includes preparing the menus, selecting and training staff and keeping the kitchen in good working order. And now I don’t have to cook every day, but can choose to do it when I really want to.
W: What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming a chef
M: You must be prepared to deal with stressful situations. And you have to be able to think quickly — if the fish you wanted to use for your main dish doesn’t arrive, you’ve got to invent something different. People think that preparing food in a first-class restaurant is a complicated and difficult thing to do. This is partly true. But the key to success is to buy the best and the freshest food available and keep things simple.
听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
(Text 10)
W: Hey welcome to today’s talk! I’m Emma Davis, an AI enthusiast who’s been exploring this since finishing at MIT. I’m excited to share my passion for the incredible world of artificial intelligence, or AI.
I’ll kick things off with an awesome story from 2015, in Silicon Valley. Our project was called “Project Skylark” and with Dr. Jack Thompson, a Cornell University bird expert. We wanted to teach a machine to recognize different birds.
It was amazing. “Avis”, the AI system, learnt to improve its accuracy over time. In six months, it could identify bird species better than human experts! This showed the incredible potential of AI!
It’s come a long way since the 1950s with Alan Turing’s ideas. Modern systems can analyze data, spot patterns, and make decisions on their own. This power has opened up endless possibilities in areas like healthcare, finance, and transportation.
One inspiring example comes from Dr. Alice Chen, who in 2018 led a team at Stanford University to develop the computer program “MediScan” that analyzes images and detects early signs of diseases like cancer. MediScan’s accuracy and speed massively surpassed human capabilities, saving thousands of lives.
However, it has its challenges and risks. A 2020 report showed concern of AI taking jobs and affecting economy. I love AI but there’s tough conversations about balancing progress, job security, privacy and security as systems get better. Together, we can create a future where AI helps us achieve our wildest dreams.
