Adrian’s “Amazing Race” started early, when his parents realized that he, as a baby, couldn’t hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired (听觉受损的), he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to read lips and pronounce words.
Later on, Adrian’s parents decided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to prevent them from doing so, saying regular schools couldn’t take care of a student with special needs. His parents were determined to take the risk and push him hard to go through his work every day because they want to prove that, given the opportunity,he could do anything. Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge. The pace was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasn’t always easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school.
The effort made by Adrian and his parents paid off. Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school. He also achieved a lot in life outside school. He developed a love for the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht Race 05/06, being the first hearing-impaired Asian to do so.
But none of these achievements would have been possible without one of the most important lessons from his mother.“If you believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve great result” she often said.

In order to help change our influence on the environment of the earth, a California-based organization is searching to build an AI language. It can allow people to deeply understand non-human languages.
Aza Raskin is the co-founder and president of the Earth Species Project(ESP), an organization that uses a form of AI to translate non-human languages. ESP wants to use its machine learning technology to understand this important information and make it easily known to the public.
Raskin stressed their purpose to help protection by explaining, “The end we are working towards is, we can discover the non-human language, and decode animal communication. Along the way, what is also important is that we are developing technology that supports scientists and protection.” ESP believes that understanding languages can help deepen our relationship with animals and allow us to better protect them.
In the past, understanding the communication of animals heavily depended on a great deal of observation. Whether it is calls of alarms or sounds made by dolphins or elephants, scientists have been amazed by the different forms of non-human communication present in these animals. With the development of new technologies, researchers have now begun to understand a great deal of data they can get through machine learning.
Elodie Briefer, a professor at the University of Copenhagen, has recently helped co-develop an algorithm. It can help scientists understand whether pigs are expressing positive or negative feelings. However, ESP is doing it differently, by focusing on all kinds of animals, not just one. ESP believes it is likely that social animals communicate with each other, for example, whales and dolphins.
Although ESP believes that understanding AI machine learning data is only one step to full communication, they believe that one day we will be able to understand entire systems of communication.
8. What is Aza Raskin trying to do
A. Educate the public to take care of animals.
B. Create a new organization to protect the earth.
C. Help people understand non-human languages.
D. Search for new ways to send information by AI.
9. What does the underlined word “decode” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Change. B. Recognize. C. Admire. D. Explain.
10. How do ESP researchers study animal communication
A. By developing new machines. B. By making lots of observation.
C. By doing research on computers. D. By comparing different calls of animals.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. New Technology Is Changing Our Life
B. Interesting Animals Able to Communicate
C. A New Way to Understand Animal Languages
D. Scientists Are Trying to Communicate with Animal
【答案】8 C 9. B 10. B 11. C

A new underwater camera developed recently at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) could have many uses, including climate modeling.
More than 95 percent of the earth's oceans have never been observed. This means we have seen less of our planet’s ocean than we have the far side of the moon or tie surface of Mars. What is preventing widespread undersea exploration! The answer is the high cost of powering an underwater camera for a long time.
MIT researchers have taken a big step to solve this problem. They developed a new underwater camera. The camera is about 100, 000 times more energy-saving than other undersea cameras. It takes color photos, even in dark underwater environments, and sends images through the water. Most importantly, it can work for a very long time by powering itself.
The camera turns energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy. It uses the electrical energy to power its imaging and communication equipment. After capturing (拍摄) images in the ocean, the camera also. uses sound waves to send them to a receiver. The camera doesn't need a power source, so it could rug for weeks on end. And this allows scientists to search more parts of the ocean. The camera could also be used to capture images of ocean pollution.
“We can use the camera to help us learn what is happening to the climate. Personally, this is one of the most exciting things about the camera. We are building climate models, but we, need to know more about the ocean. This technology could help us build more detailed climate models and better understand how climate change influences the underwater world,” says Fadel Adib, director of the Signal Kinetics group in the MIT Media Lab.
12. Why does the author mention the moon and Mars
A. To explain the difficulty in scientific research.
B. To indicate it is necessary to observe the ocean.
C. To correct a misunderstanding about the ocean.
D. To show our knowledge of the ocean is limited.
13. Why is the new camera considered a big step
A. It takes over 100, 000 photos. B. It works for a long time underwater.
C. It costs little to build such a camera. D. It works well in dark environments.
14. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph
A. How the camera works. B. What the camera looks like.
C. How the camera moves underwater. D. Which parts of the ocean the camera works in.
15. What can the camera help scientists do according to Fadel Adib
A. Understand the reasons for climate change.
B. Collect more ocean information for climate models.
C. Increase the knowledge about the influence of ocean.
D Get more people interested in the underwater world.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第二段中“What is preventing widespread undersea exploration! The answer is the high cost of powering an underwater camera for a long time.(是什么阻碍了大范围的海底勘探!答案是长时间为水下摄像机供电的高昂成本。)”和第三段中“Most importantly, it can work for a very long time by powering itself.(最重要的是,它可以通过自我供电长时间工作。)”
根据第四段中“The camera turns energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy. It uses the electrical energy to power its imaging and communication equipment. After capturing (拍摄) images in the ocean, the camera also. uses sound waves to send them to a receiver. The camera doesn't need a power source, so it could rug for weeks on end. (摄像机将声波传播的能量转化为电能。它利用电能为其成像和通信设备提供动力。在海洋中捕捉到图像后,相机也。使用声波把它们发送到接收器。相机不需要电源,所以可以连续使用几个星期。)”可知,第四段主要讲了新摄像机的工作原理,故选A。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“This technology could help us build more detailed climate models and better understand how climate change influences the underwater world(这项技术可以帮助我们建立更详细的气候模型,更好地了解气候变化如何影响水下世界)”可知,根据Fadel Adib的说法,新摄像机能帮助科学家增加对海洋影响的认识,故C。

第四部分 书面表达(共两节,满分40分)
概要写作(满分15分)
46. Read the following passage. Summarize it no more than 60 words the meaning of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.
Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating.
Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it — some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.
Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.
