Activity 5 Read and share
Read the introductions, make a profile for each sportsperson and then share.
Xu Haifeng was the first athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for the People’s Republic of China in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Two months after the end of the Los Angeles Olympics, Xu Haifeng made a decision: donate the precious gold medal to the Museum of History (now the National Museum of China). Xu Haifeng said: “My success stems from the strength of the country. Only I can see it at home, but it can be seen by more people in the museum, which is more meaningful than putting it at home.” After retiring from his career as a champion sharpshooter, Xu went on to become a dedicated coach. He actively promotes the spirit of sports and delivers the positive energy of hard work.
Wayne Gretzky is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. “ It’s kind of ironic when I broke in at 17 and I was told I was too small, too slow and I wouldn’t make the NHL.” He is the only NHL player ever to score 200 Points in a season, and did so 4 times in the span of 5 years. He received the Order of Canada (their highest civilian honor) in 1998. He said, "when you win, say nothing, when you lose say less". He definitely has amazing sportsmanship. Wayne Gretzky is a strong example of a hero and he is patient.
Yelena Isinbayeva passed the necessary standards and became a master of sports in 1997. However, her high growth (174 cm) prevented her from continuing her studies and career as a gymnast. To change sport at the age of 15 is considered a risky step, but Yelena had the strong will and determination to start training from scratch. On July 22, 2005, she became the first woman to clear the historic 5-metre barrier in the pole vault. Yelena is an athlete who has set an incredible 27 world records - 15 abroad and 12 home- and won nine straight gold medals home and abroad.
Which sportsperson inspires you most and why
Activity 6 Think and share
The sportsperson who inspires me is Lang Ping because she used to be the lead spiker on the Chinese national teams. She was nicknamed the iron hammer for her elegant athleticism, fierce spiking, and tactical brilliance. Since 2013 she has been the coach of the Chinese women’s national team, guiding it to a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
