For adults, communicating in our first language feels easy and natural. Yet learning language is a complex process that is influenced by several factors. When young children are beginning to learn language, some influences, such as the amount of speech a child hears and the amount of time they spend in back-and-forth language interactions with others, have what may appear to be obvious connections to language learning. Perhaps less obvious is that children’s own physical experiences with their environment help them learn new words.
In new research in the cognitive sciences, we investigated how this is the case by considering how children learn words that refer to something they can touch, grasp and interact with. We asked parents to rate how easily a child can physically interact with the object, idea or experiences that a word refers to. We found words that refer to objects that are easy for children to interact with are also words that are learned at an earlier age.
For instance, a word such as spoon is usually learned earlier than a word such as sky. And this relationship remains even when we consider other things that can affect word learning, such as how common a word is in everyday language. Words such as spoon and sky are both relevant to everyday life, and so children will probably hear those words quite early in their development. One difference between them is that spoon refers to something they can touch, grasp and interact with, whereas sky does not.
Our findings agree with those of studies where babies wore small head-mounted body cameras to record their interactions with objects. Those studies show that the children’s own physical experiences helps them learn new words. For instance, in one study researchers found that 18-month-old babies were more likely to learn the name of a new object when they held that object, and less likely to learn the name if their parent held the new object. Another study found that 15-month-olds who spent more time using new objects had learned more nouns by the time they were 21 months old.
13.What is the aim of the new research
A.To see if babies’ physical experiences help them learn new words.
B.To investigate how a baby learns names of everyday objects.
C.To find out what influences a baby’s language learning.
D.To study how a baby interacts with everyday objects.
14.Which of the following might a baby learn at an earlier age
A.Bag. B.Heart. C.Milk. D.Leaf.
15.What is the function of the last paragraph
A.To further support their finding. B.To summarize the research result.
C.To point out new research directions. D.To introduce results of other findings.
16.What can we infer about the author
A.The author is a parent. B.The author is a researcher.
C.The author is a professor. D.The author is a journalist.
All across the country, you’ll find film locations that may still scare you years after the release of some of the most iconic horror movies of all time. When you’re ready for a truly horrifying road trip, here’s where to go.

The hotel even offers a one-hour guided experience called The Shining Tour.
The Ring
The 2002 supernatural horror movie The Ring was filmed primarily in Washington, including Seattle and Whidbey Island, but the Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon, was also a location in the movie. The historic 93-foot-tall lighthouse — the tallest lighthouse in Oregon — served as the mysterious Moesko Island Lighthouse in the film.
Rocky Horror Picture Show
An ideal setting for Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s dealings, this impressive Victorian Gothic country house sits on an area of 35 acres overlooking the River Thames in England. It’s perhaps the world’s most famous underwater attraction that remained in film and in legend: the Titanic. But now experts say the ocean liner, once a wonder of the high seas, is falling to pieces.
Capt. Alfred McLaren, the scientist who in July led the most recent expedition to the ship’s underwater grave, said his team saw clear signs of the accelerating damage of the wreck (残骸). There was damage likely caused by rust and sea life, and the captain’s cabin had collapsed.
“I was absolutely astonished,” McLaren said.
Worse still, the fallen mast (桅杆) that crushed the ship’s deck is believed by many to be the result of an unapproved salvage (打捞) operation. “It was almost depressing to see how quickly she was getting worse,” McLaren says. “I would be really surprised if there’s very much standing up from the bottom, two decades from now.”
Ed Kamuda, who runs the Titanic Historical Society in Springfield, Mass., says adventure tourists — who pay $36,000 each to visit the wreck — are also contributing to the destruction of it.
“This is something I expected. I just didn’t expect it to happen so quickly,” Kamuda said. “People are going down just as an ego trip to say ‘I was there.’ All this takes a fare on the ship.”
The Titanic has sat at the bottom of the Atlantic since it sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage on April 14, 1912. More than 1,500 people died that night. The ship came to rest at the bottom of the freezing North Atlantic, more than 2 miles beneath the waves. The wreck was discovered in 1985, and since then it has been repeatedly visited by treasure hunters.
But still some scientists say those divers, and other thrill seekers are not necessarily to blame for the Titanic’s current problems.
Capt. Craig McLean of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration went on an expedition to the Titanic in June as part of a government study that is monitoring the condition of the ship. He says it’s unclear what part of the damage is from Mother Nature and which is from human nature.
“It’s too early and there isn’t enough evidence to put our fingers on anything,” McLean said.
Regardless, most agree there’s little that can be done for this most famous of wrecks. And soon, the mighty Titanic could well be lost again.
20.McLaren expected that in twenty years _______.
A.Only a minor part of the wreck would remain as it is
B.The wreck would be getting worse at a faster speed
C.Only salvage operation with the purpose of research would be approved
D.The wreck would be completely destroyed by unapproved treasure hunters
21.What is the tourist’s purpose of visiting the wreck, according to Kamuda
A.To contribute to the breaking down of the Titanic. B.To help finance the preservation of the Titanic.
C.To satisfy their curiosity and adventurousness. D.To better understand the history of the Titanic.
22.Craig McLean is one of the scientists who believe _______.
A.Visitors should not be prohibited from the Titanic and other famous wrecks
B.The influence of the thrill seekers on the wreck will finally be determined
C.The government should contribute more to the monitoring of the Titanic
D.The damage of the Titanic is not necessarily attributed to the adventure tourists
23.The author is most likely to agree that the future of the Titanic is _______.
A.promising B.discouraging C.controllable D.vague
Living a healthy lifestyle contains making choices about the foods we eat as well as exercise and other daily activities. The term “healthy lifestyle” can be defined as “to improve and protect one’s health and well-being”. For this purpose, a healthy lifestyle can include good eating habits, regular physical activity and anti-alcoholism
First of all, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle. For instance, rushed morning routines, trying to lose weight, and lack of appetite (食欲) early in the morning are all reasons why people skip breakfast (不吃早餐). However, most experts think that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Another example is fast food; a hamburger from McDonald’s with special sauce and cheese is not exactly considered as a healthy meal. Our society today is developing fast and people are on the go at all times. It is much easier to stop and get fast food. As a result, humans become fatter. However, eating low-fat meals that include 5 to 9 serving of fruits and vegetables every day is an ideal healthy life plan. Therefore, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle.
Secondly, another way of living a healthy lifestyle is physical activity. Exercise is indeed part of life because it keeps the body and mind in good shape. Exercise reduces stress and contributes to (有助于) a good sleep. It can keep a person looking and feeling younger throughout his entire life, and it also helps build one’s energy and strength. So, physical activity is another way of living a healthy lifestyle.
Finally, another way is anti-alcoholism. Addiction to alcohol may cause serious social and public problems. It is accepted that driving after drinking is dangerous. Alcohol is a main factor of traffic deaths. Alcoholism can also lead to diseases, such as heart attack or liver trouble. Thus, anti-alcoholism is another way for a healthy lifestyle.
In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle can be maintained in three ways: the first way is good eating habits, the second way is regular physical activity and the final way is anti-alcoholism.
24.When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, which of the following is not mentioned in the passage

C.Physical activity. D.Losing weight.
25.What does the underlined phrase “on the go” mean
A.Busy. B.Boring. C.Hard. D.Happy.
26.According to the text, how can we feel younger throughout our life
A.By avoiding fast food. B.By being happy every day.
C.By taking regular exercise. D.By wearing some special clothes.
27.In what column are you most likely to find this text
A.Life. B.Sports. C.Economy. D.Advertisement.

Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane (飓风) ‘as a common thing. So it is not unusual for a family to have several full gas cans and bottled water stored in their houses all summer.
Though unwilling to evacuate (撤离) from a hurricane, on September 15, my family was forced to leave our home for my grandfather’s house several miles away. We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel. Around nine o’clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off. Soon came an indoor rainstorm.
Realizing the damage, my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he still ran out into the heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left. We got him back inside. I had never seen him so scared. Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.
The leak (渗漏) had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what to be saved. Some people may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save those items with emotional value, such as the photos. I still feared the storm, but I more feared the influence it brought.
The next morning, it started to clear up. Thankfully, my family came safely through the storm, though the same could not be said for the house. Only the wooden beams (梁) remained, but inside many of the things were safe. My mom and I had worked tirelessly through the night.
It was late, but we were still unwilling to go to bed. We discussed the rebuilding of the house. Under the beautiful sky, we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the future. After this disaster, I realized the truth that the hurricane itself was not so terrible if we loved each other.

A.Why the author feared the storm. B.How the storm influenced the house.
C.How people helped each other in the storm. D.What the author was ready to save from the storm.
35.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 5 mean

A选项“To see if babies’ physical experiences help them learn new words.(看看婴儿的身体体验是否有助于他们学习新单词。)” 故选A。
根据第二段中“In new research in the cognitive sciences, we investigated how this is the case by considering how children learn words that refer to something they can touch, grasp and interact with. (在认知科学的新研究中,我们通过考虑儿童如何学习与他们可以触摸、掌握和互动的东西有关的单词来调查这种情况。)”,以及根据第三段中“For instance, a word such as spoon is usually learned earlier than a word such as sky. (例如,像spoon这样的单词通常比sky这样的单词学习得早。)”以及本段中“One difference between them is that spoon refers to something they can touch, grasp and interact with, whereas sky does not. (它们之间的一个区别是,spoon指的是他们可以触摸、抓住和互动的东西,而sky则不是。)”可知,幼儿对日常物品名称的习得速度和他们是否能常与这个物品互动有关,幼儿与牛奶的基础和互动行为更高,因此幼儿在早期阶段最有可能先学到的是牛奶。故选C。
15.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Our findings agree with those of studies where babies wore small head-mounted body cameras to record their interactions with objects. Those studies show that the children’s own physical experiences helps them learn new words. (我们的发现与那些婴儿戴着小型头戴式身体摄像头来记录他们与物体互动的研究结果一致。这些研究表明,孩子们自己的身体经历有助于他们学习新单词。)”可知,其它一些研究也有类似的研究结果,因此它的作用是为了支持本文的观点,也就是本文所提到的最新研究的发现。故选A。
根据第二段中“In new research in the cognitive sciences, we investigated how this is the case by considering how children learn words that refer to something they can touch, grasp and interact with. We asked parents to rate how easily a child can physically interact with the object, idea or experiences that a word refers to. We found words that refer to objects that are easy for children to interact with are also words that are learned at an earlier age. (在认知科学的新研究中,我们通过考虑儿童如何学习与他们可以触摸、掌握和互动的东西有关的单词来调查这种情况。我们要求家长们对孩子与一个词所指代的物体、想法或经历进行肢体互动的容易程度进行评分。我们发现,孩子们在较早的年龄就学会了那些容易与之互动的物体。)”可知,在论述研究的过程中,文章通过使用第一人称,如“We asked parents……”;“We asked parents……”以及“We found words……”
