People from East Asia tend to have more difficulties than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion. Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

Meyer Mixdorf, 5, was a patient at the children’s hospital in Missouri back in May. There he made his first mystery friend, Johnna Schindlbeck, a medical worker who works across the street.
Meyer’s mother, Liz Mixdorf, said that Meyer got brain cancer (癌症) in December 2020 and was taken to the children’s hospital to receive treatment. Five months into his treatment Liz and her husband decided to arrange sticky notes (便利贴) in the shape of a smiley face on Meyer’s window to cheer him up. They never knew that they would receive a wink face in response (回应) to their artwork a day later.
“It was a really funny and exciting activity that Meyer looked forward to,” Liz said. On Johnna’s side, she had no idea who she was communicating with. She thought that was just fun in the very beginning. Johnna realized her post-it friend was a patient after she saw a hospital sign on the window.
Meyer and his parents worked through other characters, including Iron Man, Batman, the Minions and more. Each creative design they put on would get responses. The Mixdorf family and Johnna Schindlbeck spent several weeks sending sticky note art to each other from their windows in May and July.
On July 13, Meyer was leaving the hospital. He even got a chance to meet Johnna who made his days brighter. “I knew it was him as soon as I saw him and just started crying,” Johnna talked about Meyer’s visit. “I think Liz and I just both had tears.”

I really feel for him and his family because I know what it feels like to have to walk away at the end of the day and you’re just depending on the hospital staff’s care. He had been a Christmas present to my second son. Brian, at six, wanted something that was his alone, something not handed down — as were his clothes and toys — from his older brother.
And so, on Christmas Day 1954, I rose early with my wife to put the tiny kitten a neighbor had given us into the stocking that Brian had carefully fastened to the mantelpiece (壁炉台) the night before. From then on, the life of the cat, Tiger, was full of love. For a sometimes fumbling child, Brian showed great gentleness with Tiger, which was amazing. Every night, when I checked on the children, I would invariably find Tiger on Brian’s bed, stretched out beside him.
One evening our next-door neighbor rang the front doorbell. “I’m sorry to have to tell you this,” she said when my wife answered the door, “but when I backed out of the driveway this afternoon, I’m afraid I ran over your cat. I tried to help him, but he jumped up and ran away. I don’t know where he went or how badly he was hurt.”
Four weeks passed with no sign of Tiger. Brian tried to hide his fear that his friend had crawled away to die. It was a fear we all shared. And we came to accept his death — all of us except Brian.
Every evening Brian would go to the door and call Tiger’s name. Finally, on the 28th day after the neighbor’s unwelcome announcement, he had an answer. Out from under the front porch came Tiger, his tail high, walking with the pride, behaving as if he had never been away. As he approached the door, Brian’s face was transformed with joy. But neither he nor Tiger displayed open affection in front of the family. There was a calm acceptance, an honoring by each of the other’s dignity. That night, though, when I checked Brian’s room, I saw that his cheeks were wet and a smile was on his face and his arm encircled his cat, who lay purring quietly beside him.

It all started with a tweet from a social media influencer Jér me Jarre on March 15 after he was on a call with a volunteer in Somalia who had just seen a 6-year-old girl die after walking 90 miles with her mother in search of water. In Somalia alone, 6.2 million people are in need of help.
In his video, Jarre says that everyone is on social media from food and water companies to airlines. What if they could find an airline willing to send food and water to Somalia
With Turkish Airlines being the only airline that flies to Somalia, he started a GoFundMe campaign (活动) called “Love Army for Somalia” and challenged viewers to post on social media #TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia to get them to set aside one of their flights to Somalia for food.
The campaign took off, and other social media influencers joined the movement to help spread the word. Within days, many famous people joined the cause. Turkish Airlines listened and came back with an answer, saying they would keep donating (捐赠) a plane to be filled with food until the end of the famine (饥荒). This campaign received $1 million, within 24 hours with the average (平均的) donation being around $28 — the highest donation of $50,000 came from Alex and Ani, a jewelry company.
The goal was to reach $1 million in 10 days and the amount (数量) of money raised in such a short time by so many people surprised Jarre. However, they don’t want this to be a one-off campaign, and to keep the campaign going, they’ve come up with another hashtag, #NominatedForSomalia to ask each donor to encourage three friends to donate through social media.
Jér me Jarre is in Somalia right now and sharing wonderful images that will put a smile on your face and make sure help is reaching the right people.

Today we talk about pointless, useless actions. And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let’s go to the beach!
For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks.
Making sandcastles on the beach is a fun activity. So, bringing sand-digging tools — like a shovel (铁铲) — and a bucket is a good idea. But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that already! And that brings us to today’s expression: “bringing sand to the beach.”
“Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are useless. This means serving no purpose.
To bring sand to the beach can also mean overkill. Overkill means to do or have more than what is necessary or useful. Often when using this expression, we say “like”. For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach.
We usually use “like bringing sand to the beach” when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. For example, I could also say it is “like bringing a sandwich to a restaurant.” With this example, the meaning goes one step further. It also means that what you are bringing ( the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant).
20.What can be pointless to bring when going to the beach
A.A towel. B.A chair. C.A shovel. D.The sand.
21.Why are so many things mentioned in paragraph 2
A.To show many activities on a beach trip. B.To show the various meaningless things.
C.To advice necessary things for a nice trip. D.To bring hope for an enjoyable family trip.
22.How to understand the underlined sentence in paragraph 5
A.Doing things too much is as bad as doing little. B.We should take measures to protect the ocean.
C.There can’t be too much killing of marine life. D.Things can’t be done based on one’s preferences.
23.Which saying has the opposite meaning of “pointless, useless actions”
A.Teaching a fish how to swim smoothly. B.Providing timely help to those in need.
C.Teaching eagles to fly higher and higher. D.Adding some fresh water to the sea.
Volunteering is often thought of as a selfless act-one where you give up your time for a worthy cause without being paid. Here are some ways volunteering can help young people develop into confident, active citizens.
Build self-esteem
Many teens are faced with society’s most challenging problems. 24 While working on solutions to these problems, they have the chance to see how their efforts can help improve the lives of others. This can play a significant role in developing their self-esteem throughout their teenage years when many are filled with insecurities and a lack of self-confidence.
Explore & discover interests
When selecting an opportunity, tecns can volunteer in an area where they have some interests. For example, if they’re thinking about a career in medicine, they might want to voluntcer at a hospital. Or if they’re passionate about animal rights, they could consider helping out at their local animal shelter. And if they’re not sure where their passions lie, participating in a few different single days of service can help them discover unknown interests. 25
Widen their social circle
A teenager’s social circle typically consists of family and school friends. Volunteering gives teens the opportunity to meet other people. 26 Volunteering provides the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded people and form rclationships that last a lifetime.
27
Volunteering also gives teens an opportunity to experience situations that occur in the workplace, such as having to work as part of a team. They see what people have to do in certain jobs and the conditions in which they have to work. This helps them remove what they can’t see themselves doing and drill down to what they really want to do.
28 It indicates that the individual has empathy for others, has gained some real-life experience outside of school and is prepared to step outside of their comfort zone to achieve goals. They may also learn specific skills while volunteering that are useful in the interview.
A.Gain work experience
B.Thus they can benefit from these new discoveries.
C.Some of them may impact on their future positively.
D.Do a lot of volunteer work
E.Plus, volunteer work can impress a future employer.
F.Besides, volunteering helps you find your place in society.
G.However, they eventually find volunteer work powerful.
Some speaking activities do not give an exact picture of your true language skill. But storytelling does. Storytelling is the retelling of a story. It can be a short piece of invented story; or it can be the retelling of a news event. Or you can talk about something that happened in your own life. 29 On the other hand, an activity requiring your opinion can slow you down. 30
For the storytelling activity, try to provide as much information as possible and aim for a recording of three minutes or fewer. Don’t just say, “I studied at the library.” Say, “ 31 And most of the seats were taken, so I looked around and finally found a place, but it was near the window. It was cold, so I had to keep my coat on,” or something like that.
32 Instead, it is to speak at a faster speed because you do not have to stop and think of each idea separately. Before the activity, you’d better speak out loud to yourself a few times to make sure you have your main points in mind.
When listening to the recording, do not expect to find all or even most grammar or vocabulary mistakes. 33 After the first recording, record yourself telling the same story at least once more and take note of your progress. But avoid memorizing your speech.
A.Put your speech into written or typed form.
B.The goal of giving such information is not to fill the time.
C.I walked into the library and thought about where I should sit.
D.That is because it forces you to think about your ideas as you say them.
E.Choose a place that you know well, like your home or a nearby bus station.
F.But you can easily find some mistakes, such as wrong verb and noun endings.
G.Storytelling frees you from forming complex ideas and lets you speak easily in English .
Have you ever argued with a friend, and said or done something you regretted Sometimes it can be hard to put things right, especially when feelings have been hurt. Apologizing can understand why you fell out in the first place. 34
Why do we argue
You might think your football team is fantastic but your friend disagrees; or you don’t want someone joining in your game. Sometimes, especially if you’re angry, things can be out of control and you’ll say or do something you regret. 35 . Arguing and disagreeing with others occasionally is normal — we all do it — but it’s important to resolve your differences afterwards so bad feelings don’t get worse. This is where an apology can help.
36
We all make mistakes, and apologizing is a way of admitting we’ve got something wrong and will try not to do it again. Dr Jennifer Thomas, a psychologist, believes an apology needs to show the other person that we’re genuinely sorry. Meanwhile, we accept responsibility for our actions and want forgiveness.
What if it’s not my fault
Sometimes another person may pressure you into taking the blame when it’s not your fault. If you feel this is happening, you had better communicate with them. 37 . If you still can’t agree, you could ask a parent or teacher to help you resolve the problem.
Does apologizing always work
Sorry on its own might not always be enough, so try to ask the other person how they felt while you were arguing. Explain your side too, and make it clear you’ll try not to repeat the same mistake again. 38 . It may take time for someone to understand and forgive. Even after you’ve said sorry, you could still feel bad but you can feel good about trying to fix things and promising yourself to do better next time.
A.What does saying sorry mean
B.We argue for all kinds of reasons
C.What do we make mistakes in life
D.A genuine apology isn’t a magic wand
E.Here are some ways to apologize to others
F.Knowing how to apologize can help you become friends again
G.Try talking about why you argue at first and explain your feeling
How to Welcome Change in Your Life
Do you embrace the road you are now on or resist and avoid change at all costs when a recent event has shaken you greatly Here are things you can do in the midst of uncertainty to choose differently to change the track of your life.
Don’t react.
What do we do when we don’t know what to do First, stop, take a deep breath and don’t do anything. 39 It is having faith and trusting what you do know in the unknown.
Reflect on the past.
Another activity is to recall times in your life when you were faced with an unknown. Then, think about how you handled the situation. 40 Use your past experiences to bring you strength, and to remind you what you are capable of.
Make conscious decisions.
41 However, more possibilities open up when we are at peace. Go over your list of what ifs and make a more balanced list of the best and worst situations possible. Then talk to loved ones about what you would do in each situation and the choices you do have.
42
We often see fears as our greatest enemy, yet they provide us with an enormous opportunity for self-growth. What if we were to see them as friends who want to help us become a better person Let your fears help you instead of hurting you. Then, write down what comes to you. 43
A.Don’t panic.
B.Befriend your fears.
C.You may be surprised by the answers.
D.When we are fearful, our options seem limited.
E.Then try to feel at ease with the state of “not knowing”.
F.Learning from past failures helps you make better decisions.
G.Remembering these incidents will remind you that you’ve gone through difficult situations.

(由于土耳其航空是唯一一家飞往索马里的航空公司,他发起了一个名为“索马里爱心军”的GoFundMe活动,并要求观众在社交媒体上发布#土耳其航空公司帮助索马里#的帖子,让他们留出一架飞往索马里的航班来运载食物)”和第五段中“The goal was to reach $1 million in 10 days and the amount (数量) of money raised in such a short time by so many people surprised Jarre.
根据第四段中“Within days, many famous people joined the cause. (几天之内,许多名人加入了这项事业。土耳其航空公司听取了他们的意见,并给出了答复,称他们将继续捐赠一架装满食物的飞机,直到饥荒结束。这项活动在24小时内收到了100万美元的捐款,平均捐款约为28美元,其中最高的捐款来自一家名为Alex and Ani的珠宝公司)”可知,第四段主要介绍了该运动的影响,得到的正面反馈以及筹集到的大量捐款,即运动的成果。故选C项。
19.细节理解题。根据第四段中“The campaign took off, and other social media influencers joined the movement to help spread the word. (这场运动突然流行起来,其他社交媒体上有影响力的人也加入了这场运动,帮助传播这个词)”和“This campaign received $1 million, within 24 hours with the average (平均的) donation being around $28 — the highest donation of $50,000 came from Alex and Ani, a jewelry company. (这项活动在24小时内收到了100万美元的捐款,平均捐款约为28美元,其中最高的捐款来自一家名为Alex and Ani的珠宝公司)”可知,该运动开始后影响很大,很快筹集到了大量捐款,取得了巨大的成功。故选C项。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一个英语习语“Bringing sand to the beach (把沙子带到海滩)”的用法。
20. 细节理解题。根据第二段中“For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. (例如,沙滩巾可以让坐在沙滩上更舒服。有些人选择带沙滩椅。)”以及第三段中“So, bringing sand-digging tools — like a shovel (铁铲) — and a bucket is a good idea. But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that already! (因此,带上挖沙工具——比如铲子和水桶是个好主意。但是你不需要带沙子。大多数海滩已经有很多了!这就引出了我们今天的表达:“把沙子带到海滩上。”)”可推知,去沙滩带沙是徒劳的。故选D。
21.推理判断题。根据第二段“For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks. (去海滩旅行,我们带几样东西,可以使旅行更愉快。例如,沙滩巾让坐在沙滩上更舒服。有些人选择带一把沙滩椅。一把沙滩伞可以保护你免受强烈的阳光照射。在海里游泳真的会让你很饿。所以很多人带冷藏箱来装食物和饮料。)”可推知,提到这些物品是为一次愉快的旅行提供必要的建议。故选C。
22.词句猜测题。根据第四段““Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are useless. This means serving no purpose. (“把沙子带到海滩”描述的是毫无意义和不必要的行为。这些动作毫无用处。这意味着没有任何意义。)”以及第五段的后文“Overkill means to do or have more than what is necessary or useful. Often when using this expression, we say “like”. For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach. (Overkill的意思是做的或拥有的比必要或有用的多。通常在使用这个表达的时候,我们会说“like”。例如,带鲜花去花店开业就像把沙子带到海滩。)”可知,做事太多和做得少一样糟糕。A. Doing things too much is as bad as doing little做事太多和做得少一样糟糕;B. We should take measures to protect the ocean我们应该采取措施保护海洋;C. There can’t be too much killing of marine life对海洋生物的捕杀再多也不为过;D. Things can’t be done based on one’s preferences做事不能凭个人喜好。故选A。

以及最后一段中“We usually use “like bringing sand to the beach” when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. (我们通常用like bring sand to the beach来表示不需要带什么东西到某地。 A. Teaching a fish how to swim smoothly. B. Providing timely help to those in need及时为有需要的人提供帮助;C. Teaching eagles to fly higher and higher教鹰飞得越来越高;D. Adding some fresh water to the sea给大海添加一些淡水。

This helps them remove what they can’t see themselves doing and drill down to what they really want to do.(志愿服务也让青少年有机会体验工作场所发生的情况,比如必须作为团队的一部分工作。 选项A“Gain work experience(积累工作经验)”正是本段内容的总结归纳。故选A。

It can be a short piece of invented story; or it can be the retelling of a news event. Or you can talk about something that happened in your own life.(有些口语活动并不能准确反映你的真实语言技能。 G选项“Storytelling frees you from forming complex ideas and lets you speak easily in English .(讲故事让你从形成复杂的想法中解脱出来,让你更容易用英语说话。)”

B选项“The goal of giving such information is not to fill the time.(提供这些信息的目的不是为了打发时间。)”

37.根据前文“If you feel this is happening, you had better communicate with them. (如果你觉得这种情况正在发生,你最好与他们沟通。)”可知,此处强调如果发生争吵,要与朋友进行沟通。G选项“Try talking about why you argue at first and explain your feeling(试着谈谈为什么你们一开始会争吵,并解释你的感受)”中解释自己的感受则为沟通的过程,承接前文,符合语境。故选G。
38.根据后文“ It may take time for someone to understand and forgive.(别人的理解和原谅可能需要时间。)” D选项“A genuine apology isn’t a magic wand(真诚的道歉不是魔法棒)”引起下文,指出真挚的道歉不是魔法棒,即道歉之后不一定能够得到朋友的原谅,该选项中A genuine apology与后文的it形成呼应,符合语境。故选D。
